Amotekun operatives evict 137 Northerners from Ondo forest

Amotekun

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, have evicted at least 137 northerners from the forest reserves in the state.

It was learnt that those evicted were occupying the Elegbeka forest reserves along the Ifon-Owo road.

The Amotekun commander in the state, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who spoke to newsmen in Akure said that their continued occupation of the forest reserve was a security threat to the state.

He added that all the illegal forest occupants would be escorted out of the state to wherever they came from.

Vanguard quoted the Amotekun commander as saying:

“We got an Intelligence report that very many people bombarded (forests at) Elegbeka–Ifon area in the state.

“We moved in and questioned the majority of them and they said they were from the northern part of the country

“We asked for their mission they were not able to give us a clear cut of what they are here for.

“We brought some of them and their sponsors here to the headquarters in Akure for proper investigation.

“We profiled them and we found out that they were conniving with some persons in Ose to be given space for settlement in the government’s forest reserve which makes them illegal occupants in the forests reserve.”

“We are sending them back to where they claimed they came from,” the Amotekun commander added.

DSS Issues Warning To Clerics Threatening Buhari’s Govt

The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned religious and political leaders against calling for a forceful change of government or mass action that will plunge Nigeria into crisis.

The warning comes after the Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Rev. Ejike Mbaka called on the National Assembly to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari if he fails to resign over rising insecurity.

In a statement on Sunday by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, the DSS stated that some clerics only make divisive comments.

The secret police warned that it will ”no longer tolerate deliberate machinations by subversive and hostile groups whose agenda is to throw the country into anarchy so as to serve the interests of their sponsors.”

”The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby condemns the unsavoury statements by misguided elements who have continued to threaten the government, sovereignty and corporate existence of this country,” the DSS said.

Notable are the unnecessary vituperations and activities of some religious and past political leaders who have either called for forceful change of government or mass action against it.

”It has been established that the main objective for these is to cause a disintegration of the country. It is unfortunate that those in the forefront of this are respectable individuals who should be patriotic and not allow their personal ambitions to ruin the nation.

”The Service has also noted their desperation and penchant to collaborate with external forces and influences against Nigeria. ‘They are reminded that even though democracy offers free speech, it does not give room to reckless pronouncements capable of undermining security.

”It is instructive to note that the ballot box remains the vehicle of change in a democracy.

”In this regard, self-centred individuals and groups are warned to stop engaging in acts inimical to the peace and sovereignty of this nation.

”In the same manner, influential personalities should be sensitive to the emerging situations and guard against divisive and inciting utterances that may cause a breakdown of law and order.

”Recently, the Service invited and cautioned some persons who deniably recounted their earlier statements or said they were quoted out of context.

”The public should be wary of such individuals and their co-travellers who, incite them in the open but, turn in the secret to retrieve their words after they had caused the damage.

”While the Service reaffirms its unambiguous support to an indivisible, indissoluble and united Nigerian State in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, it will no longer tolerate deliberate machinations by subversive and hostile groups whose agenda is to throw the country into anarchy so as to serve the interests of their sponsors.

”Consequently, the Service is assiduously working with other security and law enforcement agencies to ensure the maintenance of peace and internal security of the country.”

Fight for me, Buhari begs

Last week, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) found himself face to face with United States Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken.

Buhari may have forgotten, but he first encountered Blinken, at that time the US Deputy Secretary of State, weeks after he took office in 2015.  Ironically, the issues that the two men “discussed” last week are the very same that they covered in 2015 when Buhari was preparing for his first state visit to the US.

Buhari told Blinken his talks with Mr President Barack Obama would boost his efforts to overcome terrorism and that Nigeria looked forward to greater US support for the multinational Joint Task Force against Boko Haram.

He then moved up in the world, arriving in the US where he was received like royalty at the White House by a gushing President Obama.

The American leader applauded Buhari’s “reputation for integrity [and] “to make sure that he is bringing safety and security and peace to his country…and a very clear agenda with respect to rooting out the corruption that too often has held back the economic growth and prosperity of his country.”

Obama looked forward to discussing security and counterterrorism, and “how we can be helpful in addressing some of the corruption issues that have held Nigeria back, and unleashing the incredible talent of the Nigerian people.”

Following that meeting, the White House issued a readout on July 21 which said, among others, that Mr. Obama “made clear that the US is prepared to increase support for a holistic effort by the Government of Nigeria to counter Boko Haram; one that protects human rights and brings together security and development tools to defeat Boko Haram and eliminate the factors that fuel extremism.”

Buhari also met with other top officials, notably the then-Vice President, Joe Biden, and they spoke about the “…ways in which the US and Nigeria can partner to overcome the challenges and seize the opportunities. President Buhari and the Vice President agreed on the importance of rooting out corruption in order to unlock the full potential of the Nigerian economy and ensure stability.”

This is the context in which Buhari’s meeting with Blinken last week must be evaluated for the embarrassment and shame that it was. As much as I criticise President Olusegun Obasanjo, for instance, he would have requested, and obtained a meeting at the highest levels.

Think about it: Buhari, a man who was celebrated in the White House in 2015, could not get a meeting even with Vice-President Kamala Harris, let alone Mr. Biden.  He could not speak with either official even by telephone, although they had in March spoken to the leaders of Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  In November, Biden had also called President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.

From the rooftop of Buharimania in Washington in 2015, Buhari had become indispensable, inconspicuous and irrelevant, because of his policies at home and abroad, including nurturing some of the problems he had claimed he would solve.  And of course, Buhari sent to Washington DC for five years a man who was so old it was unclear he knew where he was let alone why he was there.

Last week, if Buhari loved Nigeria, he should have resigned.  Indeed, it is over three years since I first called on him to resign.  Now completely out of his depth, with his incompetence and insincerity spilling grave insecurity into every family and every street in Nigeria, Buhari was last week begging Blinken to beg Biden to send the exact same help the US offered him directly six years ago.

It was the same week that the inaugural Chandler Good Government Index (CGGI), ranking countries according to government capabilities and outcomes, placed Nigeria as the third worst on earth, ahead only of Zimbabwe and Venezuela.

Buhari’s response was to hold out his hat, saying that unless the US and other “strategic partners” came to save Nigeria, the consequences would spill over to all countries.  It was a reminder of his July 2015 visit, when at the US Institute for Peace he charged that by not selling weapons to Nigeria, the US had “aided and abetted” Boko Haram.

This was about the A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft Nigeria had sought to buy from the US for which the Obama administration, citing concerns about Nigeria’s human rights record, had placed a hold.  That would get worse after the Nigerian Air Force ‘mistakenly’ bombed a refugee camp in Rann, Borno State, in January 2017.   Over 100 refugees and aid workers were killed.

The core of the matter is simply that the Buhari administration has never demonstrated commitment to the task, or competence in implementation.  He did not read the papers he signed, and never took seriously the subject of human rights.  And as he nurtured corruption and nepotism at home, he somehow hoped that everyone around the world was also deceived.

But everyone has seen the past couple of months for instance when he finally changed his service chiefs, he moved swiftly to protect them from being indicted for war crimes by converting them into “ambassadors.”

Similarly in 2018 as the herdsmen violence began to expand, he told the United Nations General Assembly that the insurgencies in the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin featured “runaway fighters from Iraq and Syria and arms from the disintegration of Libya.”

Earlier, in April that year, he told Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, that the killer herders had been trained and armed by former Libya leader Muammar Gaddafi, and subsequently “escaped with their arms.”

And yet it was the same killers, who had, among others massacred over 70 Nigerians in Benue State on New Year’s Day three months earlier, with Buhari urging the leaders of that state to “accommodate your countrymen” (the killer herders); and “restrain your people” (the victims).

Three years later, Buhari is begging the world to send the calvary to rescue his government from the same mess he has nurtured for six years.

The truth is that while relocating the AFRICOM Headquarters to Africa might help to put out one or two brushfires, and while friends and partners may send other resources, the real problems (and solutions) are in his hands.  The cynicism and duplicity of Buhari’s government has proved to be Nigeria’s biggest challenge.

Every society needs a leader who can think beyond himself, and for the public good.  Buhari thinks in indecisive fragments, pandering to hidden agendas.

It is his contradictions and arrogance that are responsible for the chaos and insecurity in Nigeria.  For Nigeria to slide back from disintegration, it must have a leader with a national vision and focus: a leader who is persuaded and led by the mammoth challenge of justice, poverty and accountability.

In essence, that is what Blinken was saying to the African media after his meeting with Buhari.  Perhaps Buhari, because he ignores the local press, did not read that encounter.

Manchester United v Liverpool postponed due to protests

The Premier League have condemned “acts of violence, criminal damage and trespassing” after protests at Old Trafford forced Manchester United’s match with Liverpool to be postponed. The match was called off on safety grounds after around 200 Manchester United fans broke into Old Trafford on Sunday to protest against the Glazer family.
Supporters made their way onto the pitch with flares, with one thrown at the broadcast podium being used by Sky Sports in the stands. Outside, protesters surrounded and shook cars in Manchester while there were also protesters around the hotels where the United and Liverpool squads were staying.

The Premier League say they “understand and respect the strength of feeling” but said “the actions of a minority seen today have no justification”.

In a statement, the Premier League said: “Following the security breach at Old Trafford, the Manchester United vs. Liverpool game has been postponed.

This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities.

“The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance. We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated COVID-19 breaches.

Fans have many channels by which to make their views known, but the actions of a minority seen today have no justification.

“We sympathise with the police and stewards who had to deal with a dangerous situation that should have no place in football.

“The rearrangement of the fixture will be communicated in due course.”

Umoren’s friend, Uduak Umoh, in a terse post on Sunday confirmed the development saying “they raped and killed my friend”.

The Nation had earlier reported Umoren’s mysterious disappearance sparked fear among friends and sympathisers, which prompted the creation of a hashtag – #FindHinyHumoren — to gather information on her whereabouts.

Umoren was last seen on April 29 before she went to honour the appointment with someone who promised her a job through Twitter chat after her post saying she was in need of a job.

Umoren wrote: “#AkwaIbomTwitter please I’m really in need of a job, something to do to keep mind and soul together while contributing dutifully to the organisation. My location is Uyo, I’m creative, really good in thinking critically and most importantly vast learner. CV available on request.”

She was screaming for help on the phone, said one of her friends who established contact with her on the day she went missing.

“She sent me an audio record on WhatsApp and I had to call her back to know if she wanted to say something to me but immediately, I called her I heard her screaming,” the friend, Uduak Umoh, tweeted.

The police said two persons have been arrested over the incident, and the anti-kidnapping squad in Akwa Ibom State was investigating the case.

Mourning Umoren’s demise, Umoh shared images of both of them. In the images, they both appear to be recent graduates.

In another terse post, she said “Guy we planned to serve in the same state. Don’t do this @HinyHumoren”.

“The killed my friend and they buried my friend” she added.

Also, many Nigerians have taken to social media to mourn her demise, some others warned youths especially job-seekers to be watchful and vigilant when searching for jobs especially getting offers from companies with strange names and addresses.

Unknown Gunmen Kill Yahaya Bello’s Top Commissioner On Kogi Highway

Unknown gunmen have killed Solomon Adebayo, Governor Yahaya Bello’s Pensions Commissioner while traveling along the road in Kogi State.

According to the Nigeria Police, Adebayo was killed while traveling to Kabba area from Ilorin on Saturday evening.

The state police spokesperson, William Ayah said the gunmen opened fire on the commissioner’s vehicle along the road, killing him on the spot while severely wounding his driver.

The police said an investigation would be carried out to track and arrest those behind the deadly assault.

It was however unclear whether the attackers made away with any of the victims’ belongings.

The driver, whose name was not immediately disclosed, was taken to ECWA Hospital Egbe alongside others injured in the attack.

The killing of Adebayo, Akeweje of Eri Land in Kogi, was being mourned across the state as the news trickled out overnight.

Nigeria is currently experiencing an increase in attacks by unknown gunmen.

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described Nigeria as a giant-killing field under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The main opposition made this known in a communique after a meeting at the Akwa Ibom Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

Reading the communique to newsmen, the national chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, decried the current security situation in the country.

According to the PDP, the security of lives and property is becoming practically non-existent as Nigeria descends into anarchy.

The PDP also condemned the handling of Boko Haram by the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“Terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling, rape, arson, mindless murder of citizens and even security agents are ravaging the land. Criminals have taken complete control of most aspects of our lives unchecked,” Secondus said.

Northampton Town have been relegated from League One after just one season following their home defeat by Blackpool.

Blackpool celebrate
Blackpool need just a point from their final two games to secure a play-off spot

Northampton Town have been relegated from League One after just one season following their home defeat by Blackpool.

The Cobblers needed to better Wigan’s result to stand any chance of taking their survival bid to the final day.

But although Wigan lost at Hull, goals from Luke Garbutt and two from Jerry Yates were enough to win the game for Blackpool and send Northampton down.

Victory means Blackpool need a point to secure a play-off spot.

Jon Brady’s side will be joined in League Two by Rochdale, whose relegation was also confirmed on Saturday after being beaten at home by Doncaster.

Goal-shy Cobblers fall short

Northampton only just crept into the League Two play-offs last season but showed an abundance of character and determination to overcome Cheltenham and Exeter and go up to the third tier.

It was a first promotion as a manager for former England defender Keith Curle, who promptly signed a new two-year deal in July.

Captain Charlie Goode left for Brentford and, after getting four points from their first two League One games, the Cobblers lost six in seven to give themselves an idea of the step up in standard.

Nevertheless Curle’s side sat a comfortable 14th at the start of December before a dismal run of only one victory in 11 matches, which led to his dismissal in February.

The club were only in the bottom four on goal difference but just one goal in his last seven games in charge was the final straw.

Under-18s coach Brady took caretaker charge, picking up just two points in his first five matches, and though back-to-back wins over Plymouth and Portsmouth gave hope, the Cobblers continued to lack goal scoring threat – failing to score in more than half their league matches – and could not string together the kind of run needed to drag them out of trouble.

With Brady’s short-term deal expiring this summer, it will be interesting to see which direction Northampton go in as they look to bounce back from relegation.

Cobblers ‘have fallen short’

Northampton Town manager Jon Brady told BBC Radio Northampton:

“Unfortunately, we haven’t been good enough in certain areas this season.

“It’s so raw right now for me. I’ve given everything I’ve got for this football club, I’ve given it all the hours under the sun, pushed my family aside for this.

“I’ve got one more game to manage and we’ve got to represent this football club in the right way. We’ve fallen short this season.”
