Just In: 15 persons dead, 17 rescued, others missing as boat capsizes in Niger

Tragedy has struck in Niger State again as a boat mishap has claimed the lives of 15 villagers while several others are still missing. Seventeen of the victims are, however, said to have been rescued just as local divers are in frantic search to rescue the missing passengers dead or alive.

The unfortunate incident occurred in Tijana in Munya local government area of Niger at about 6:00pm on Saturday. Our Correspondent reliably gathered that the villagers were returning from a local market in Zumba in Shiroro local government area of the state when the boat capsized. It was further gathered that the boat must have been overloaded as it was carrying no fewer than sixty passengers which were mostly women and children.

Heavy windstorm was also attributed to the ugly incident. Confirming the development, the Sarkin Kasuwan (Head of the Market) of Zumba, Mallam Adamu Ahme said part of the victims were part of the villagers who fled their different communities after bandits had recently sacked them from their ancestral homes.

According to him, “the boat was carrying no fewer than sixty passengers and there was heavy windstorm and these two factors may have contributed to the fatality.” “Already,17 people have been rescued alive through the efforts of local divers who swung into action immediately the incident was reported and they are still on the rescue operation of several others,” he remarked.

Chelsea beats Man City to delay premier league title party

Chelsea

Chelsea forced Manchester City to put their Premier League title party on hold on Saturday, winning 2-1 to boost their own chances of a top-four finish in a dress rehearsal for the Champions League final, Super sport reports.

Raheem Sterling gave the home side the lead just before half-time at an empty Etihad Stadium but Hakim Ziyech levelled and Marcos Alonso bundled in the winner in the dying seconds.

City could be crowned champions before they play again. Second-placed Manchester United face three matches before Guardiola’s men are next in action, against Newcastle on Friday.

The point lifts Chelsea into third spot, six clear of fifth-placed West Ham with just three games to go.

Thomas Tuchel’s in-form team ended City’s dreams of a historic quadruple by beating them in the FA Cup semi-final last month and they once more proved tricky opponents.

City, who have a huge 13-point advantage over second-placed Manchester United, are certain to win their third Premier League title in four years but must now wait for it to be confirmed.

Pep Guardiola made nine changes from the side that saw off Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final in midweek, with Ederson and Ruben Dias the only players to keep their places.

Chelsea made five changes following their triumph over Real Madrid.

The home side dominated possession in the early stages, with Ferran Torres firing over after a thrust down the right and Benjamin Mendy shooting wide.

Raheem Sterling was booked in the 12th minute after catching Timo Werner with his studs but the punishment could have been worse.

Werner had the ball in the net just after the half-hour but he was well offside and Sterling had a shot at the other end but clear-cut chances were at a premium.

Ziyech tested Ederson in the City goal as the half-time break neared but moments later the home side were ahead.

Gabriel Jesus shrugged off Andreas Christensen to break into the area. He squared, looking for Sergio Aguero. The Argentine’s touch was poor but Sterling was on hand to tuck home.

City should have been 2-0 in first-half stoppage time but Aguero paid the price for attempting a Panenka penalty that was easily saved by Edouard Mendy, drawing the ire of Guardiola.

Jesus won the spot-kick when he was bundled over by Billy Gilmour.

– Chelsea fightback -As the second half wore on the visitors started to establish a foothold and they equalised just after the hour when Rodri lost possession on the halfway line.

Chelsea broke down the right and Cesar Azpilicueta picked out Ziyech just outside the area. The Moroccan drilled a low shot into the bottom corner.

Guardiola threw on Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden for Torres and Aguero as his side went in search of the win.

Chelsea substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi had the ball in the net with about 10 minutes to go but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside.

The finish was frantic. Sterling had a penalty appeal turned down and Alonso then grabbed a last-gasp winner after an assist from Werner.

Tuchel has transformed Chelsea’s fortunes since replacing Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge in January, losing just two matches on his way to the FA Cup final and Champions League final.

Their remaining three league matches are against Arsenal, Leicester — their FA Cup final opponents — and Aston Villa but they will now be strongly fancied to qualify for the Champions League for the third season in a row.

Liverpool beats Southampton 2-0 to stay in EPL top 4 race

Liverpool kept its faint top four hopes alive in the English Premier League after beating Southampton by an unconvincing 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side stumbled over the line for only a second league win at home in 2021 thanks to Sadio Mane’s first-half header and Thiago Alcantara’s first goal for the club in the 90th minute.

At this stage of the campaign, results rather than performances are the preference and considering Liverpool’s woeful home record this year, this was a welcome boost after conceding late equalizers in its previous two matches. But this performance did not bode well for its Champions League aspirations.

“We are kind of (in the top-four race),” Klopp said. “It’s not impossible but it’s difficult. We will give it a try and see where we get to.”

Chelsea’s win at Manchester City put the Blues into third just before kickoff, setting Leicester as Liverpool’s new primary target, nine points ahead.

More injuries — to Ozan Kabak, Ben Davies, James Milner and Naby Keita — meant academy graduate Rhys Williams was drafted in for his first start in two months alongside Nat Phillips, returning at centre back after a two-match absence.

It also meant Klopp was without his three first-choice central defenders plus the two he signed in January as cover.

His lack of resources showed with Ben Woodburn, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Blackpool, in the squad for the first time in two years alongside 18-year-old centre back Rhys Williams making his debut on a Premier League bench.

The game quickly settled into a familiar pattern at Anfield of chances created but not converted.

Mane made no mistake from Mohamed Salah’s 31st-minute cross — the first time this season the pair combined for a Premier League goal.

The host’s anxiety wasn’t calmed until just after 90 minutes when Thiago scored from outside the edge of the penalty area.

But the worrying is far from over for Southampton, which is not mathematically safe. A 13th defeat in 17 matches left it still looking over its shoulders.

Ortom Bombs El-Rufai, Says Kaduna Gov Misleading Buhari

The Benue State government led by Governor Samuel Ortom has warned Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to deal with the insecurity ravaging his state before talking about that of other locations in the country.

The Benue State government in a statement on Saturday issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Terver Akase also accused El-Rufai of misleading President Muhammadu Buhari on issues of insecurity ravaging Nigeria.

The position of the Benue State government comes as a response to an earlier position by El-Rufai who accused Ortom of blaming the federal government for insecurity in Benue as a way to cover up his own leadership failures.

However, Ortom in his reply said El-Rufai has no moral justification to talk about how to curb insecurity, accusing him of causing problems for his own people in Kaduna State.

Ortom added that the Kaduna State Governor is only painting him in a bad light to score cheap political points with the Aso Rock Villa.

He further accused El-Rufai of being a religious bigot and sycophant.

The statement reads: “We want to believe that El-Rufai was wrongly quoted. A man who has failed in several aspects as Governor of Kaduna has no moral justification to accuse another Governor.

“A Governor who has divided the good people of Kaduna against one another by not hiding his hatred of indigenes of the state on account of religion and ethnicity is not qualified to judge another Governor on any issue whatsoever. A Governor who chose a Muslim deputy in a state where Christians have a huge population is certainly not one to preach unity and peaceful co-existence.

“El-Rufai’s attack on Governor Ortom is merely to make him look good before the Presidency. He has apparently fallen out of favour at the Villa and wants to use Governor Ortom as a launch pad back to reckoning. How has he handled his own problems in Kaduna? This is a man who has insulted almost every prominent Nigerian including the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and former President Olusegun Obasanjo; a man who is his former boss and one who brought him to limelight.

“Nigerians have not forgotten the unprintable things El-Rufai said during Goodluck Jonathan’s time as President. He insulted the then President and publicly supported terrorists attacking parts of the country. His statements on the abduction of Chibok girls and several other acts of terrorism are still fresh in our minds. El-Rufai is on record to have said repeatedly that Fulani people must retaliate any wrong done to them no matter how long it takes.

“Is Governor Ortom responsible for El-Rufai’s inability to ensure peace in Kaduna State where bandits have taken over some communities while kidnappings and killings occur on a daily basis?

‘El-Rufai admitted to paying Fulani herdsmen whom he invited from other West African countries in the name of stopping attacks in Southern Kaduna. Since he made the confessional statement, attacks on the people of Southern Kaduna have escalated. This is why he wants men of good conscience like Governor Ortom to be silent to pave the way for the conquest and expansion agenda to succeed.

“Kidnapping has become a common crime in Kaduna State under Nasir el-Rufai.

Aside from the much celebrated cases, it has been estimated that at every given time, not less than 300 persons are abducted in Kaduna by kidnappers who are always identified as El-Rufai’s kinsmen. He pays them billions to embolden them. He has turned the state into one of the most unsafe places to live in Nigeria today.

“Talking about taking someone seriously, if other Nigerians take El-Rufai seriously, we in Benue do not do the same. A man who has no regard for humanity does not deserve our attention.

“Nasir el-Rufai is a sycophant, ethnic champion and religious bigot who hates anyone who does not share the same faith with him. He is among the very few persons who have misled President Muhammadu Buhari. El-Rufai is one of the real enemies of this country who do not hide their divisive tendencies by elevating nepotism and ethnicity above the good values that have held Nigeria together over the decades.

“Nasir el-Rufai doesn’t possess the credentials to counsel anyone on payment of salaries and the welfare of workers. This is a Governor who recently sacked 4,000 workers for no just cause. He ought to be ashamed of himself. What happened to the lofty promises he made to the Kaduna people in 2015?

“The Kaduna Governor should know that only two days ago, the people of Benue State met at a stakeholders meeting in Makurdi and unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Governor Ortom in recognition of his performance. That meeting was attended across party lines with leaders of All Progressives Congress, APC also present.

“El-Rufai and his conspirators must note that Benue State will not repeal the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, no matter the amount of blackmail, hatred and threats they wage against Governor Ortom.

“We advise the Kaduna State Governor to focus on addressing the numerous problems he has created in his state and leave Governor Ortom to lead Benue in peace”.

Nigeria Rivers attack: Gunmen kill at least seven police officers

A manhunt is underway after a night of violence left at least seven police officers dead in Nigeria’s oil-rich Rivers State on Friday.

Gunmen opened fire on a checkpoint in the southern state, then drove to two police stations, killing officers and burning patrol cars, police say.

Police killed two of the attackers but are searching for those who escaped.

It is not clear who was behind the killings, but the region has seen a surge in separatist attacks on police.

The unidentified armed men, driving a Toyota Hilux van, launched their “surprise assault” on the checkpoint at Choba Bridge at around 20:30 local time (19:30 BST) on Friday, police spokesperson Nnamdi Omoni said.

After shooting dead two police officers at the checkpoint, they killed two more officers and set fire to a patrol car at Rumuji police station, Mr Omoni said. Police fired back there and killed two of the attackers, he said.

The remaining gunmen then killed three more officers at the Elimgbu police station, he added.

A number of police officers and soldiers have been killed in the region in recent weeks, prompting a night-time curfew.

On Thursday, gunmen killed two police officers during an attack on another police station in nearby Anambra state.

Authorities blamed that attack on the banned separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob). The group campaigns for independence for the south-eastern region, where the ethnic Igbo people form the majority.

Nigeria is also grappling with Islamist militancy in the north-east and banditry in the north-west, where 700 children have been taken from schools in the past five months.

“Now you have come again and I know you have receipts and you won’t dare us to deny. I don’t blame you, it’s the close friend, the insider who is feeding you. May God forgive that person.”

“Everyone is going through something including you. Thanks for getting this huge burden off my chest. You tried. But from now on, avoid me, Stella. T for Tenx.”

She has deleted the post.

Gunmen abduct Miyetti Allah’s Chairman in Kogi

The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Kogi State, Alhaji Wakili Damina, has been abducted. The state Secretary of MACBAN, Mr Adamu Abubakar, told newsmen in Lokoja on Tuesday that Damina was abducted on April 30 by some armed men dressed in army camouflage.

He said witnesses said that the abductors, numbering about eight, came in a white bus at about 12 noon to “forcefully” take away the Chairman from his house at Chikara village, Kogi Local Government. Abubakar said that he was informed of the incident about an hour later by the younger brother of Damina who claimed he witnessed the incident. The Secretary said he immediately called the phone number of the missing Chairman, but it rang out. He said that Damina’s number was switched off when he repeated the call about an hour later. “Since then, his lines are not reachable and all efforts to know his whereabouts proved abortive,” he said.

Abubakar said that he immediately notified the state Commissioner of police of the development, adding that the state government was also informed through the Special Adviser on security matters to the governor, Mr Jerry Omodara. The Secretary said that he and some members of the association visited the Nigeria Police Force headquarters, Abuja, to know if Damina was in their custody but they said no. He also said that a search party raised by MACBAN had visited other places, including abattoirs in and around Abuja to no avail.

The state Commissioner of police, Mr Ede Ayuba, when contacted, said that the police are yet to locate the whereabouts of the Chairman. The Commissioner said that immediately he was informed of the incident, he called Damina’s phone severally but there was no response. Ayuba said efforts to get detailed information about the incident from the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area where the incident happened were unsuccessful as the matter was not officially reported to him.

Rio Ferdinand predicts winner of Champions League tie at Stamford Bridge

Manchester United hero, Rio Ferdinand, has predicted the winner between Chelsea and Real Madrid when both teams clash in the Champions League semi-final second-leg tie at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Chelsea had played a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first-leg encounter last week in Spain.

Thomas Tuchel’s side head to the game following a 2-0 victory over Fulham in the Premier League last weekend, while Real Madrid defeated Osasuna 2-0 in the LaLiga.

Providing his prediction, Ferdinand backed Chelsea to beat Zinedine Zidane’s side to qualify for the Champions League final because the Blues play at a high pace.

“After watching Real Madrid play and navigate their way through against Liverpool, I thought the experience was going to be telling for Real Madrid,” the former England defender said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE YouTube channel.

“But Chelsea, the way they play at a high pace, Real Madrid can’t live with it. If they play at a high pace the whole game again and go for it again, I think they overrun this Real Madrid team.”

Asked whether Chelsea will progress to the final, Ferdinand continued: “Yeah, I think they will.

“I think it will be a Chelsea vs Manchester City final. I went the other way [beforehand], I thought it would be a Real Madrid v. PSG final but not anymore.”

DHQ warns soldiers against overthrowing Buhari regime

Defence

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has warned soldiers and politicians against any plots to overthrow President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime.

The spokesperson for the DHQ, Brig-Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, gave the warning in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, May 3, PR Nigeria reported.

Nwachukwu said the military learnt about a statement suggesting that current political leadership should hand over power to the military for restructuring.

According to him, the statement was purported to have been made by Robert Clark (SAN).

“We also wish to remind all military personnel that it is treasonable to even contemplate this illegality, the full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on any personnel found to collude with people having such agenda,” said the army.

The country is facing nationwide chaos characterised by wanton killings and kidnaps as its security forces struggle to contain rampaging terrorists and other criminal elements.

On Monday, the Nigerian Army reiterated its loyalty to Mr Buhari and the Nigerian Constitution.

“The Nigerian military wishes to dissociate itself from such anti-democratic utterance and position.

“Let it be stated categorically that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to the present administration and all associated democratic institutions,” it explained.

“We shall continue to remain apolitical, subordinate to the civil authority, firmly loyal to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, and the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“We shall continue to discharge our constitutional responsibilities professionally, especially in protecting the country’s democracy, defence of the territorial integrity of the country as well as protection of lives and properties of citizens,” the military pledged.

The army further warned that the military high command would not tolerate misguided politicians who nursed the inordinate ambition to rule the country outside the ballot box.

The Defence Headquarters advised politicians not to suggest or plan a military takeover, adding that the military under the current leadership remains resolute in defending the nation’s democracy and its growth.

“The current security challenges are not insurmountable as the military, in partnership with other security agencies, are working assiduously to ameliorate the challenge.

On Monday, the Nigerian Army reiterated its loyalty to Mr Buhari and the Nigerian Constitution.

“Nigeria will know peace again,” it assured.
