Sacked Obaro, Dead Official, Others Make Up List Of Presidency’s 153 Aides

Sacked Obaro, Dead Official, Others Make Up List Of Presidency's 153 Aides

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo currently have a total of 153 aides, according to an updated list of political appointees sighted by The PUNCH on Thursday.

The presidential aides, according to the document, include the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari; Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of Vice-President), Adeola Ipaye; State Chief of Protocol to the President, Ambassador Lawal Kazaure; 10 special advisers; 52 senior special assistants; 61 special assistants; 21 personal assistants; five senior technical assistants and one technical assistant.

Remarkably, the late Tijjani Yusuf is still in the list of special assistants. He is listed as the special assistant to the President on General Duties.

The document indicated that Yusuf, who hailed from Niger State, was appointed into the position on June 27, 2016.

The Presidency had in a July 31 statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, announced Yusuf’s death.

The statement indicated that he died at the age of 63 after a brief illness and that after prayers at the National Mosque, Abuja, his remains were conveyed to his hometown, Minna, for burial.

He however still made the list that was updated in November.

Also still on the list of presidential aides is a former chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, Okoi Obono-Obla.

He was listed as the Special Assistant to the President on (Prosecution), Federal Ministry of Justice.

The document indicated that Obono-Obla, who hails from Cross River State, was appointed on April 18, 2016.

After his earlier sack as the SPIP chairman, the Presidency, again through a September 17 press statement by Adesina, announced the dissolution of the panel.

Another person that questionably made the list of presidential aides is a member representing Kano Municipal Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Shaaban Sharada.

Sharada was listed as Personal Assistant to the President (Broadcast Media) and the document showed he was appointed on January 22, 2016.

His name still appeared on the list despite winning an election to represent his people during the 2019 General Elections.

Also curiously in the list are the names of two official photographers for the Vice-President.

Novo Isioro was still listed as the Special Assistant to the President (Visual Communication), Office of the VP, despite the fact that the lady appointed on August 12, 2017, had since stopped working with the Presidency.

Her replacement, Tolani Alli, also still made the list as special assistant to the President (Photography) Office of the VP.

She was appointed on August 9 after Isioro’s exit.

Another entry on the list is that of Mrs Damilola Ogunbiyi, who was listed as Senior Special Assistant to the President (Power), Office of the VP.

The document showed that she was appointed on June 1, 2015.

Ogunbiyi had since been named the Managing Director, Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency.

Edo: APC Suspends Obaseki, Deputy Over Planned Defection To PDP

The Edo Peoples Movement, a faction of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state, on Wednesday announced the suspension of Governor Godwin Obaseki; his deputy, Philip Shaibu; and the Secretary to the State Government, Ogie Osarodion.

Announcing the suspension at an enlarged meeting and press briefing held at the residence of Gen. Charles Airhiavbere in Benin, Mr. Patrick Ikahriale who read the speech on behalf of EPM said, “Governor Obaseki, his deputy, Phillip Shuaibu; Anslem Ojezua and Osarodion Ogie (SSG), from available information from top leaders of the PDP, have concluded plans to defect from the APC and seek re-election on that platform.

“For us the authentic APC stakeholders in Edo State, we wholeheartedly denounce such.

“We wish to state that at the appropriate time, the APC National Working Committee will initiate the process of party primaries for the selection of the party’s gubernatorial candidate.

“We will abide by the guidelines for such primaries as the constitution of the party vests the responsibility of conducting primaries on the NWC.

“We are prepared to give every aspirant equal opportunity to test their popularity. We will resist any attempt to close the political space,” Ikahriake said.

“Consequently, we hereby suspend Governor Godwin Obaseki, Hon Phillip Shuaibu and Barr. Osarodion Ogie from the party for anti-party activities and urge the National Working Committee to set the machinery in motion for further disciplinary action against them,” he added.

A killer disease has hit Lagos, here’s what you can do to stay alive

A killer disease has hit Lagos, here’s what you can do to stay alive

117 Lagosians have so far been infected with gastroenteritis and we’ve got tips here to keep you out of harm’s way.

A stomach or intestinal disease is plaguing Lagos, and according to Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, some 117 persons have been infected by the disease in five local government areas of the state.

A health worker in Ebute-metta discloses that some 168 patients have been diagnosed with the ailment so far; and that the figure could be higher because not all cases are reported.

The ailment is called gastroenteritis and it is the name for the inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

Gastroenteritis is a bacterial or viral infection which causes vomiting and diarrhea.

Its symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Symptoms may also include feverishness, a lack of energy and dehydration.

“Patients with gastroenteritis come down with severe acute watery diarrhea and profuse vomiting. Those infected with micro-organisms causing the disease show signs and symptoms within 12 hours to one week after ingesting contaminated food or water. The disease affects both children and adults and can kill within hours if untreated,” Abayomi says.

What causes gastroenteritis?
Poor hygiene, eating contaminated food and drinking contaminated water are causal factors, like Abayomi pointed earlier.

The micro-organisms that cause gastroenteritis are the same ones that cause typhoid fever, cholera and certain viral diseases.

Consuming uncooked seafood, unwashed fruits and vegetables or shellfish from estuarine waters, can also leave you prone to gastroenteritis infection.

What could have caused the Lagos epidemic?
The rains contributed significantly.

It’s been raining without let in Lagos and flood water has become part of everyone’s life in the nation’s commercial capital. That flood water comes laden with all kinds of harmful micro-organisms from waste, faeces and urine.

When residents swim in all of this infested water and enter homes or consume food without thoroughly washing their hands or bodies, they leave themselves open to intestinal infections.

When food vendors prepare dishes or wash utensils or cutlery with contaminated water, they help spread the disease.

Abayomi also states that the increase in the number of cases of gastroenteritis is not unconnected to the persistent rainfall in Lagos and the attendant flooding.

What is the Lagos government doing to curb spread?
The health commissioner says “following the report of these cases, Rapid Response Teams at the affected LGAs led by the Medical Officers of Health were activated, stool specimen were collected for laboratory test to confirm the micro-organism causing the vomiting and diarrhea while surveillance have also been scaled up in communities within the affected LGAs to stop the spread of the infection.

“The results of laboratory tests will be published once the source pathogen is identified.”

Some of the worst hit local governments are Lagos Island, Ajeromi, Apapa, Mushin and Ikeja.

Of the 117 cases of gastroenteritis reported so far, 109 have been treated and discharged, the commissioner discloses.

The Lagos state government is also sensitizing members of the public about the disease, while harping on personal hygiene and environmental sanitation.

How can you avoid contracting gastroenteritis?

By eating well cooked meals, washing your hands thoroughly, avoiding roadside eateries and drinking clean or safe water.

Abayomi advises that you wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating; cook food thoroughly; dispose waste material properly, avoid open and indiscriminate defecation and keep water containers clean.

“Citizens must ensure proper disposal of waste and ensure they avoid possible backflow connection between water and sewer system.

“It is important that citizens wash hands with soap and running water thoroughly especially after defecation, before eating or food preparation and when they have been in contact with a sick person or touch any item or surface that may have been contaminated”, Abayomi says.

Stay safe out there guys!

BREAKING: Senate approves N10bn loan refund for Kogi amidst protests

BREAKING: Senate approves N10bn loan refund for Kogi amidst protests

The Senate on Wednesday approved the N10bn loan refund for Kogi State despite stiff resistance from the opposition senators.

No sooner had the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Loans, Senator Clifford Ordia, laid the report of his panel on the issue at plenary than the Senate President called for the debate on it immediately.

Attempts by the Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, to stop the process because it was not indicated in the order paper, was frustrated by Lawan, who insisted that the arrangement was in order.

Ordia, who read the report of his committee said necessary findings conducted by his panel showed that due process was followed by the Kogi State government in executing Federal Government projects.

He also said the Federal Government agencies in charge of the loan refund had approved the payment.

Senator Jibrin Barau, who spoke immediately after the presentation of the bill, asked his colleagues to approve it.

But Abaribe, in his contribution, said he agreed with Barau that states that had done the job of the Federal Government should be paid.

He, however, said that the approval appeared too hasty.

Abaribe said since the Kogi Governorship elections would hold on Saturday, the approval should be delayed for one week.

He said, “This is not the right time to approve such loan refund. Exigency of the time suggest that we should delay for one week so that the money would not be used for something else.”

Lawan disagreed with Abaribe and said there was no time that the red chamber cannot approve the payment of the money.

Lawan subjected the matter to a voice vote and ruled in favour of those who supported its approval despite protests from lawmakers who were raising points of order.

One of the protesters, Senator Uche Ekwunife, wondered why the Senate President refused to take her point of order before ruling on the issue.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on penultimate Tuesday, sent a letter to the Senate, seeking its approval for the payment of N10bn to Kogi State.

Buhari, in the letter, addressed to Senate President, said the money would be used by the state government to settle local debts it incurred as a result of the projects executed on behalf of the Federal Government.

Buhari said his request was based on the resolution passed by the 8th Senate

Implications of The Appeal Court Judgement On The Oyo Gubernatorial Election

Implications of The Appeal Court Judgement On The Oyo Gubernatorial Election

The Appeal Court sitting at Ibadan on Monday, November 11, 2019 reserved judgement in its ruling on the petition brought before it by the All Progressive Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, ‘Bayo Adelabu, challenging the election results as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which returned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Seyi Makinde, as the duly elected governor of the Pace-Setter State.

Although three of the four-man panel resolved all issues in favour of the appellant, they couldn’t order a retrial at the Tribunal because the 180 days stated in the Electoral Act for gubernatorial election Tribunal cases to be resolved has elapsed. The Appeal Court ruled that the appellant’s case ‘subsists’, stating that the Tribunal judgement that upheld the election of Seyi Makinde was ‘perverse’.

Seyi Makinde remains governor, maintaining the status quo. But, the justices of the Appeal Court have created a judicial impasse. The justices based their ‘perverse’ verdict on the Tribunal judgement on the fact that Adelabu wasn’t given a fair hearing. The implication of this judgement can’t be overemphasized and it definitely would form a basis for other rulings; right or wrong.

The Appeal Court is expected to act as the reviewer for the Tribunal verdict and can’t by itself hear election petitions. Was Seyi Makinde duly elected? Could the declaration by INEC be wrong? Going by the judgement of the Appeal Court, none of this can be clearly understood.

The Court held that the best it could do was to withhold judgement, allowing the status quo, since the 180 days provided by the Electoral Act have elapsed. Is the Electoral Act flawed? Why is there no provision in the Electoral Act for cases like this? If Adelabu was indeed duly elected, hasn’t the Electoral Act denied the people from having their duly elected man at the helm of affairs in the State?

I’d like to state here that the fact that the Appeal Court considered the Tribunal unfair to the APC and Adelabu didn’t automatically annul the election of Makinde. But, it definitely created an issue that’d birth other legal issues so long we have this present crop of politicians. Hopefully, these judges aren’t ‘seeing’ these politicians.

Edo APC Passes Vote Of No Confidence On Oshiomole

Edo APC Passes Vote Of No Confidence On Oshiomole

The Edo State Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday said its former secretary, Lawrence Okah was removed because a vote of no confidence was passed on him.

The State Executive Committee on Tuesday revealed this after a vote of confidence was passed on the leadership of Barr Anslem Ojezua.

A statement signed and forwarded to DAILY POST said the party chairmen across the 18 local government areas of the state also passed a vote of no confidence on the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting of the party’s State Executive Committee, the Deputy State Chairman of the APC, Engr. Kenneth Asekomhe said, “After the meeting of the State Executive Committee, in pursuant of Article 17, Section 5 of APC constitution of 2014, as amended, we the undersigned members passed a vote of no confidence on the State Secretary of the party, Mr Lawrence Okah. He is hereby removed from office.

“The committee also passed a vote of confidence on the State Chairman of APC, Mr Anselm Ojezua.”

”The APC chairmen in the 18 LGAs of the state also reaffirmed their support for the second term bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki on account of his developmental strides.

”The chairmen passed a vote of no confidence on the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.”

The APC Chairman in Esan Central LGA and Secretary, Edo State APC Chairmen Forum, Hon. Mike Anakaso, said the chairmen passed a vote of no confidence on Oshiomhole for his role in trying to disintegrate the party in Edo State.

He warned that “Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is the one behind the crisis in Edo APC and a vote of no confidence was passed on him.

”We don’t want what happened in Zamfara or other parts of the country to happen in Edo State.”he added.

Meanwhile, the Auditor of the Edo State Chapter of the APC, Comrade Timothy Osadolor and the chapter’s Financial Secretary, Princess Golda Oribhabor-Onwuka have distanced themselves from a document purporting to remove the state chairman, Anselm Ojezua from office.

Speaking at the party’s State Secretariat, the duo explained that they were taken in a commando-style to the residence of the suspended Secretary of the party, Mr. Lawrence Okah and forced to sign the document.

Giving details of the incident, the Auditor, Comrade Osadolor explained that they were invited by a colleague for a meeting, before they were whisked to Okah’s residence.

He said he was threatened and asked to sign the document if he wanted to leave the residence alive, noting that he had to append a fake signature against his name to regain freedom.

According to him, “What happened, to the best of my knowledge, is an act of desperation taken too far. We were taken in a commando-style to the house of the State Secretary, where I was forced to sign the documents purportedly removing Anslem Ojezua. There were just eight or nine signatures on the document. My name was badly spelt. I didn’t draw their attention to it but had to play along by signing the document with a fake signature.

The Financial Secretary, Princess Golda Oribhabor-Onwuka emphasised that she signed the document under duress.

With the arrest of Sowore, Nigeria’s Buhari is up to his old tricks – Washington Post

With the arrest of Sowore, Nigeria’s Buhari is up to his old tricks - Washington Post

American media house, Washington Post, releases scathing print on President Buhari over the arrest of Sowore.

Political strongmen would have you believe they’re tough as nails, but they always turn out to have very thin skin.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari likes to call himself a “converted democrat.” At least that’s what he said during his 2015 presidential run, when he was attempting to re-brand himself as a reformer after a long career built on repression.

Yet dictatorial habits have proved hard to give up. When Buhari ran for president in 2015, it was with the promise of a Nigeria free from the political repression and silencing of dissent that were hallmarks of his tenure as head of state from 1983 to 1985.

Since his reelection earlier this year, matters have only gotten worse for journalists in Nigeria. Perhaps the most outrageous case involves Omoyele Sowore, a prominent journalist and political activist who remains in prison in Abuja, the Nigerian capital — even after a judge last week ordered that he be released on bail. He is being cited, among other things, for “cyberstalking” the president — a bizarre accusation, unless you consider reporting and political commentary a form of predatory behavior. It would seem that Buhari does.

“Across the board, journalists were worried about an escalation of anti-press patterns in a possible second Buhari term,” says Jonathan Rozen, senior Africa researcher at the Committee to Protect Journalists. “Unfortunately, they’ve been proven right.”

In a Nov. 7 statement, Femi Felana, Sowore’s lawyer, said that, although bail conditions were “stringent,” his client had met them all. “But in utter contempt of the orders of Justice Ojukwu, the State Security Service has refused to release Sowore.”

Sowore, the founder of the New York-based website Sahara Reporters, is being charged with seven felony counts, including treason and the “cyberstalking” of Buhari. Whatever that means. “In Nigeria, we see repeated attacks against journalists and the use of alleged cyber crimes to silence them,” Rozen told me.

Sowore created Sahara Reporters — which is devoted to political coverage of Nigeria — in 2006. His aim was to bring greater transparency to Nigerian politics. The website is credited with breaking many stories of financial corruption by the state, which is what landed Sowore behind bars this time around. In a media landscape known for being vibrant if heavily influenced by political elites, Sahara Reporters has become one of the key sources for news that exposes official wrongdoing.

Sowore came to the United States in the late 1990s. Before leaving Nigeria, he’d been detained on eight separate occasions for his political activities. After arriving here, he completed a graduate program at Columbia University.

“It is not so much a problem of freedom of speech,” Sowore told the New York Times in 2011, “but freedom after speech. You can say a lot of things in Nigeria, but the question is: Will you still be a free person? Will you still be alive after you freely express yourself?”

This year he returned to run against Buhari in the election. He did not win and instead ended up in prison for being a vocal critic of the state and its policies.

“My husband is not the only journalist in this situation. It’s always the same thing. They’ve taken others for speaking out against corruption,” Opeyemi Sowore, the jailed journalist’s wife, told me. “It’s a disturbing trend when journalists and others who are trying to make the country better are silenced through detention.”

The judge in the case this month set bail at more than $550,000, with additional conditions, barring Omoyele Sowore from speaking to the press, participating in rallies at other political events and barring him from leaving the capital, Abuja.

Sowore was originally set to be released last Wednesday, but his website reported that agents of Nigeria’s secret police blocked court bailiffs from following through on the judge’s order.

His wife and their two children, a 12-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son, who live in the New York area and are all U.S.-born citizens, have not heard from the journalist since August when Opeyemi Sowore did a radio interview here in the United States.

All indications are that Sowore has been held in solitary confinement during the entire period of his detention, which has now passed the three-month mark.

“Since the State Security Service is not above the law of the land, we shall embark on appropriate legal measures to ensure compliance with the court orders,” Falana said.

Nigerian authorities should immediately release Sowore.
