9 Nigerian Army Generals Probed For Supplying Arms To Boko Haram

9 Nigerian Army Generals Probed For Supplying Arms To Boko Haram

A top security chief confirmed to Nigerian Pilot yesterday that the military authorities had made progress in the investigation of the affected Army officers, adding that they would soon be court-martialed.

He said the delay in their arraignment before a military court was because of the concentration of activities on how to rescue the abducted schoolgirls from Chibok, Borno State by Boko Haram sect.

According to the source, some detained Boko Haram suspects allegedly named the Generals and other military officers as supplying them arms.

He explained that the military High Command would only make the matter public after concluding its internal checks to ensure that there are no loose ends.

The security chief said that the Nigerian Army, headed by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, in conjunction with other military top brass was working tirelessly to sanitise the armed forces and fish out collaborators with insurgents.

He hinted that the Army Chief had been briefed on the Generals’ arms deals with the insurgents, adding that “he (Army Chief) is currently carrying out a secret and independent investigation on the matter.”

A few months ago, a soldier had told a foreign news agency that some top military chiefs were colluding with Boko Haram sect in their raging offensive in the North-East.

In a swift reaction, The Defence Headquarters described the allegations as grave and promised to investigate the claims. The outcome of the probe is yet to be made public by the authorities as well as the names of the affected Generals.

The insurgents operate with local and sophisticated weapons such as Improvised Explosives Devices, IEDs, AK-47rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars.

A United States, US Network TV, NBC, recently reported that most of the terror group’s weapons were either stolen from Nigerian military stocks or purchased from the thriving Central African arms black market.

Army replaces attacked Borno GOC

Meanwhile, the military high command has summoned the General Officer Commanding the 7th Infantry Division, Maj-Gen. Abubakar Mohammed to Abuja for an explanation into what led to shooting by some soldiers under his command at Maimalari Barracks in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Already, the military has named Brig-Gen. M.Y. Ibrahim as Mohammed’s successor in acting capacity.

Coordinator of the National Information Centre on Insurgency, Mike Omeri, yesterday confirmed the alleged mutiny by soldiers in Borno and the setting up of an investigation panel on the issue.

At the daily briefing on the update of insurgency activities in the country, Omeri, however, said the nature and details of the incident were sketchy.

But the Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, in a statement earlier, assured that the military authorities will investigate the circumstance leading to the soldier’s’ act.

“The 7 Division of the Nigerian Army is to institute a military board of inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the conduct of soldiers who fired some shots.”

Media reports had suggested that the soldiers’ action was due to anger following the death of 15 of their colleagues in a Boko Haram ambush, on their way back from an operation in Kalabalge, but it was also gathered that the military personnel had deep resentment against GOC Mohammed.

Gen. Mohammed was reported to have narrowly escaped death on Wednesday when angry soldiers opened fire on his official vehicle when he came to address them at the command headquarters at Maimalari Barracks.

According to further information, soldiers who attacked the vehicle of the former GOC also shot two of the soldiers in his escort on the legs for guiding him into his armoured car and facilitating his escape.

#Coronavirus: Government To Shut Down All Schools Nationwide Till March 15th

The government of Italy announced on Wednesday new steps to combat the novel coronavirus outbreak in the country, including the closure of public schools and universities for 11 days, according to Sky News and The Guardian.

Lucia Azzolina, Italy’s minister of education, said schools will close from March 5 until March 15 while the nation attempts to grapple with the ongoing outbreak.

At least 2,502 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the country and 79 people have died. Italy also plans to take additional steps to further limit the spread of the virus.

According to Reuters, the government has called for the cancellation of any event that requires the “concentration of people” that does not allow for more than about a yard of space between individuals.

According to a previous Reuters report, some Italian schools had already been closed in certain regions that have been heavily impacted by COVID-19.

Schools had adapted new online tools to help keep classes going remotely, though it’s unclear if that will continue on a country-wide basis following the announcement Wednesday.

There is no national system of online education, according to the Reuters report.

In Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced every school in would close for at least a month. In China, all schools are closed until the coronavirus is no longer a public health emergency.

About 180 million children in China are learning from home, taking classes online, or watching primary-school classes on TV. The vast majority of the coronavirus cases have been reported in China.

As of Wednesday, more than 94,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed and 3,200 people have died worldwide.

Full Details Of Oshiomole's Suspension As APC Chairman

The FCT high court has given an order restraining Comrade Adams Oshomole from parading himself as the National Chairman of the ruling, All Progressives Congress, APC.

By this ruling, the former Labor Leader and Governor of Edo State seizes to be the chairman, pending the outcome of various legal battles.

In his ruling Hon. Justice Senchi Z. Danlami gave an order of interlocutory injunction restraining Comrade Adams Oshiomhole from parading himself as the National Chairman of the APC, pending the hearing and determination of the substance suite. Comrade Adams Oshomole has been in the eye of the storm lately, as he was recently suspended by his party at his Ward, Local Government and State levels.

It was on this premise the injunction application was grounded. Allegations that triggered his suspension include; alleged Highhandedness, Misappropriation of funds and Disregard for the rule of law.

The ruling All Progressives Congress, has in recent days been going through a lot of turmoil.

After surviving major judicial upsets in Zamfara and Rivers State during the buildup to the last elections, which totally knocked them of the ballot; the APC has been battling with internal Unity, especially in its NWC.

It was alleged that Comrade Adams, single handedly appointed a National Secretary for the party without any constitutional backing.

This did not go down well with many members of the NWC and has caused a visible crack in the NWC. These allegations have fueled Pro and Anti Oshiomhole rallies around the country.

The last rally in Abuja was reported to have turned out violent as Pro and Anti Oshiomhole supporters collided in front of the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja. An action that was out of control till the security agencies came in to restore peace.

As events unfold, a lot will get clearer, but as it stands, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole legally seizes to be the National Chairman of the APC.

Nigeria Has Had The Cure For Coronavirus Since 2015

Nigeria Has Had The Cure For Coronavirus Since 2015

AS the world grapples with the most recent form of pestilence called Coronavirus or COVID-19, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Professor of Pharmacognosy, Prof. Maurice Iwu has said not only has Nigeria discovered the cure for the Wuhan coronavirus or COVID 19 but the discovery has been since 2015.

He said his research group had identified and patented a possible treatment for coronavirus as far back as 2015 because of the importance of remaining ahead of emergent infections through research.

He said the drug discovery project started at the University of Nigeria Nsukka and continued in America when he was a visiting scholar at the Division of Experimental Therapeutics of Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington DC.

Prof. Iwu further said his research had in 2014 also discovered an experimental lead compound that was identified 15 years earlier in 1999. He briefed the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

“It is very important that we must remain ahead of these emergent infections through research. The other aspect of our work targets the so-called orphan diseases that are rare diseases that affect fewer than 200,000 people, or disease that has not been adopted by the pharmaceutical industry because it provides little financial incentives for the private sector to make and market new medications to treat or prevent them, and/or diseases that affect mainly the poor.

“The drug discovery project was started at the University of Nigeria Nsukka where I was a Professor of Pharmacognosy and continued in America when I was a visiting Scholar at the Division of Experimental Therapeutics of Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington DC USA (1994 -2003).

“Coronavirus (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome -Coronavirus) our approach is the use of a network of eminent scientists and leading laboratories to target particular diseases, especially neglected tropical, emergent diseases and orphan diseases such as Ebola virus and Dengue Fever, among others.”

Onu commended Prof. Iwu for his discovery and said it was a welcome development, adding that no single Nigerian life should be lost to COVID 19.

Bayelsa: Deposed APC Candidate Allegedly On The Verge Of Committing Suicide

Bayelsa: Deposed APC Candidate Allegedly On The Verge Of Committing Suicide

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and leader of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, has revealed that Lyon’s deputy, Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo is on the verge of committing suicide.

This follows the Supreme court verdict that sustained the sacking of Bayelsa State governor-elect, David Lyon and Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, his deputy,

Recall that the Supreme Court had sacked David Lyon over Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo allegedly certificates forgery.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Tv on Monday, Sylva who maintained that the APC was negated in the Supreme Court Judgement, said he (Silva) is dealing with a matter of life and death.

According to the party leader, the apex court failed to call witnesses to establish the claims that the former APC deputy governor-elect allegedly forged his certificate.

”I’m dealing with a former Deputy-Governor that is on the verge of committing suicide. This is a matter of life and death. Every day I have to call to find out that he hasn’t done anything to himself

”If someone said you forge your certificate and you have built your life and integrity and someone all of a sudden brings everything down that can lead to suicide.

”If you have a case in court challenging the authenticity of the certificate of a candidate that is a different one but if you say it is a case of forgery and you have not heard from the person concerned then you have not established anything.

”You haven’t gone to school or university where this person studied to confirm the veracity of the allegation but you already condemn the person. It’s is very sad and dangerous.

The former Governor of Bayelsa State further explained that APC approached the Supreme Court for a review because its candidate was wrongly accused.

Sylva added that the apex court should have disqualified the APC deputy candidate and allow David Lyon to be sworn-in because the lower court did not disqualify him.

”I thought the supreme court will have the chance to review itself if it has made a decision that seems to be against the principles of justice.

”For example, if someone is wrongly convicted of a crime they didn’t commit and condemned to death then people find out that they were wrong, the supreme court needs to avert and correct things.

The Supreme Court should have the courage to revert itself. It has happened before.

”They claim he forged certificate, which certificate did he forge? Was it his primary certificate or university certificate? What has been established?

”If you want to prove forgery then you must have the original. Now you say you have a variant in the name so which one is the original. None of that was established. that is not how to prove forgery.

”If you say you are upholding the judgment of the lower court then the judgment of the lower Court did not disqualify our governorship candidate, so where did the Supreme Court have this other thing to add to the judgment of the lower court. If you are going to uphold the judgment of the lower court then disqualify the deputy governor and allow the governor to carry on. ”

Breaking News: Supreme Court Makes Shocking Decision On Imo Gubernatorial Tussle

The Supreme Court, on Monday, adjourned the hearing of the application seeking to restore Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the Governor of Imo State, till Tuesday.

A seven-man panel of Justices of the apex court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammad, adjourned the matter at the behest of Ihedioha’s lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, who pleaded for time to respond to court processes he said was served on him by governor Hope Uzodinma and the All Progressive Congress, APC, in the courtroom.

“My lords this matter was adjourned for hearing, but we were just served in the courtroom with a process from the 1st and 2nd Respondents/Appellants.

“If it is convenient to your lordships, permit us to come back tomorrow (Tuesday) so that we can look at this process”, Agabi told the apex court panel after the case was called up.

“We are ready to go on,” he added. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, through its lawyer, Mr. Taminu Inuwa, SAN, said it was also ready.

However, the CJN, in a short ruling, adjourned the matter till Tuesday for hearing.

I Can Make My Son Chief Of Staff And Nothing Will Happen – Akeredolu

I Can Make My Son Chief Of Staff And Nothing Will Happen - Akeredolu

Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has said that he can appoint his last son, Babajide, as his Chief of Staff if he wishes.

The governor, who said nothing would happen if he took such decision, disclosed that his son was qualified to hold the position because he worked hard towards his emergence in office.

Akeredolu made the remarks during a dinner held at the International Event Centre in Akure, the state capital, to celebrate the third anniversary of his administration.

He said, “When somebody says Baba (Babajide) is this, I just laugh at them. If I wanted to make Baba my Chief of Staff, he can be.

“Ask yourself, how many of you did more than Baba during the campaign? How many?

“The young boy (Babajide) was going everywhere and all of us saw him but we decided because he won’t want it. I just said leave him.

“My son is satisfied, that is why, if he was not, I will put him somewhere, there is nothing anybody can do.

“I will put him, there is nothing you can do. Is he not my son? Is he not from Ondo State? Has he not worked?”

Speaking further, the governor explained the role his wife, Betty, had been playing in his government since coming into office.

He said, “I can never forget the great work that my wife has done in this state. I am not sure you can find a better First Lady, someone who has great interest in women.

“She is committed to women’s cause. I am not too sure I know many women who are in government today who are there on their own. It’s all through her efforts.”

Akeredolu said he had nothing to fear about in seeking re-election during the October 10, 2020 governorship election in the state.

#COVID19: 45 Day Old Baby, Dog Become The Latest Confirmed Carriers Of Coronavirus

#COVID19: 45 Day Old Baby, Dog Become The Latest Confirmed Carriers Of Coronavirus

A forty-five day old and a dog have become the latest confirmed carriers of Coronavirus pandemic.

The parents of the baby in South Korea and owner of the pet in Hong Kong had earlier tested positive to the virus.

By Sunday, eight countries – United States, China, United Kingdom, Iran, Australia, Thailand, Qatar and Lebanon — recorded more deaths and more positive cases of the virus.

More than 87,690 people are infected as the virus spreads around the world with hotspots in South Korea, Europe and the Middle East.

The Korea Times reported that the baby boy, the youngest so far to contract the virus, and his mother, are in self-quarantine and in good condition.

South Korea, which is grappling with the largest outbreak of the virus outside China, urged citizens to stay indoors, warning of a “critical moment” in the spread of the infection.

Its Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported 376 cases and one death linked to the virus. The country’s total number of infections stood at 3,736 last night.

Churches were closed in the country yesterday with many following services online.

In the capital Seoul, about a dozen worshippers were turned away from the Yoido Full Gospel Church, which put a sermon for its 560,000 followers on YouTube, filmed with a small choir instead of the usual 200 members and 60-strong orchestra.

“I had heard there would be no service, but just came to check as I live nearby, but yes, it is so empty,” said one of them, Song Young-koo, as he left South Korea’s biggest church.

For the first time in its 236-year history, South Korea’s Catholic Church decided to halt mass at more than 1,700 locations nationwide. Buddhist temples also called off events.

In Hong Kong, the infected dog was quarantined after it tested “weak positive” for coronavirus. Authorities said however there was no evidence yet that the virus could be transmitted to man’s best friend.
