SHOCKING: Miscreants Invade Ogun Assembly, Cart Away Mace

SHOCKING: Miscreants Invade Ogun Assembly, Cart Away Mace

Suspected hoodlums on Thursday burgled the Ogun State House of Assembly.

The Punch reports that the suspected hoodlums attacked the office of the Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, and carted away the assembly’s mace.

When our correspondent visited the assembly building which is located a few metres away from the Governor’s Office complex in the precinct of the State Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, some security personnel denied people access into the complex, citing orders from above.

When contacted, the spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident.

He said the coat of the arm had been recovered but the stick is still missing.

The PPRO added that an investigation into the burglary and theft had commenced.

Oyeyemi said, “Yes, there is an unfortunate incident today in the assembly complex. The hoodlums broke into the assembly through the ceiling and removed the official mace of the house. That is why the Commissioner of Police has to go there for an on-the-spot assessment.”

When asked how it was recovered, the PPRO declined comments.

“The details will be disclosed after the entire mace is recovered,” he added.

ASUU To Government: You Lied, We Had No Agreement To Suspend Strike

ASUU To Government: You Lied, We Had No Agreement To Suspend Strike
Prof Biodun Ogunyemi

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has denied that it reached an agreement with the federal government to suspend its ongoing strike on December 9, 2020.

The Union insisted that contrary to insinuation to that effect, there was never an understanding with the government that it would suspend the over nine months old strike on the said date.

President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a statement made available to journalists Wednesday night, said ASUU representatives do not have the powers to suspend or call off industrial action but must follow due process which includes transmitting the outcome of negotiations to members and National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU for further deliberations and actions.

While noting that ASUU was willing to cooperate with concerned authorities to ensure suspension of the strike once the welfare and wellbeing of ASUU members and survival of public universities were sufficiently guaranteed, he said It was a needless crisis which had happened because the government consistently failed to implement the agreements it freely signed with the Union faithfully.

He said, “The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been inundated with enquiries on why the ongoing strike action has not been suspended.

“This was a sequel to the widely reported claims by some government agents that all the demands of ASUU have been met and that the Union agreed to suspend the strike action today, December 9 2020. Nothing can be farther from the truth!

“To put the records straight, the Principal Officers and Trustees who constitute the core of representatives of ASUU at negotiation meetings with the government are not constitutionally empowered to suspend any strike action. Whatever comes out of an engagement with agents of the government is an offer that must be taken back to the branches through the various organs of the Union.

“Views and perspectives on offers by governments are aggregated and presented to government agents as counter-offers. This trade union strategy of offer and counter-offer is continually deployed until the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU – consisting of all recognised chairpersons – finally approves what it considers an acceptable offer from the government. It is only then that any strike action by ASUU can be suspended.

“The ASUU leadership did not reach any understanding with the government to suspend the strike on December 9, 2020, and there is nothing in the government offer of November 27, 2020, to suggest that conclusion as allegedly claimed by the Minister of Labour and Employment.

“The leadership of ASUU has consistently stated at every meeting with high ranking government officials that the union’s representatives have no mandate to take the final decision on any strike action by the union.”

Oyedepo: COVID-19 Is Lie From Pit Of Hell, I have Zero Regard For It

Oyedepo: COVID-19 Is Lie From Pit Of Hell, I have Zero Regard For It
Bishop David Oyedepo

The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide (also known as Winners Chapel), David Oyedepo, has stated that COVID-19 is not real but rather a lie from the pit of hell.

He made this assertion during a sermon on the second day of this year’s Shiloh, an annual gathering of members of the Living Faith Church held in December.

The Bishop told his congregation that they only fell victims to what they feared.

He said, “We were making progress; instead of blaming COVID-19, we started planting churches, so COVID-19 was tired and (got) parked away. We made a nonsense of the COVID-19 here. I have zero regards for it; it is a lie from the pit of hell.”

He said that the so-called symptoms of COVID-19 were everyday symptoms, hence cases classified as COVID-19 cases were unreal.

He said, “Somebody has a temperature and then (they say) he has COVID-19. Everybody here has a temperature. You can’t be in the tropics and not have a temperature.

“I have never seen an entire world so fooled like this season. I’m a responsible citizen on this earth with millions of followers and being blessed. I have a say. Now the nations gather themselves and rethink, one virus sent you packing, what if they’re two? What if they’re three? Then you will die inside your house.

“Most of those figures, they hide under the fact that they’re COVID-19 related. Malaria, COVID-19 related, Typhoid fever, COVID-19 related. Kidney problem, COVID-19 related. So they keep building their profile, profile of deception.”

He claimed that a bottle of his anointing oil was enough to take away any of the symptoms of COVID-19 more than any vaccine.

“Somebody came to me recently in one of the events I was in, he said, ‘sir, can I take pictures with you?’ I said, ‘remove that mask on your face, are you a masquerade?'”

The Bishop compared COVID-19 to a graven image that is only real for those who believe it exists.

“This graven image, I refuse to bow to it. Is COVID-19 real? Yes and no. Those who believe in it, it’s real to them, those who don’t believe in it, it’s not real,” he said.

Post – UTME: UNIBEN Recalls Some Candidates For Rewrite

Post – UTME: UNIBEN Recalls Some Candidates For Rewrite

Some candidates that had earlier sat for the Post – Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have been recalled to rewrite the examination following the collapse of the university’s server.

The university, in a terse Short Messaging Service (SMS) sent out on Wednesday afternoon, directed the affected candidates, who came from different parts of the country to write the examination, to return to the university for another test.

“If you know anyone that wrote post UTME exam today, Dec. 8, 2020 @ict hall UGBOWO, tell the person to come back from any state or city he or she is.

“UNIBEN server failed for applicants that wrote the 9 am and 10.30 am UTME exam. Authorities have tried their best to call some students but their phones were switched off. Tell your loved ones,” the message on the university’s SMS platform read.

Meanwhile, the university had been thrown into complete darkness as the main source of electricity supply to the institution was cut off.

A statement issued on Wednesday evening and signed by UNIBEN’s spokesperson, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, attributed the power outage to the crisis in the neighbouring community of Ihovbor, where restive youths had cut off the source of electricity.

“This is to inform members of the University of Benin community that the present power outage on Campus is as a result of community unrest at Ihovbor, the main source of power supply to the university.

“The community youths have forced power outage due to a community clash. It is hoped that normalcy will be restored soonest. Inconveniences are regretted,” she said.

It would be recalled that for several weeks, UNIBEN was without electricity due to a major fault on the grid supplying the university.

Electricity was, however, restored last week, before the latest occurrence.

“We Will Shut Down Private Universities In Nigeria” – NANS President As ASUU And FG Hit Stalemate

"We Will Shut Down Private Universities In Nigeria" - NANS President As ASUU And FG Hit Stalemate

The new President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Sunday Asefon, has vowed to shut down all private universities in the country should the nine-month strike embarked on by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities continue.

The NANS president said this in an interview with PUNCH Online.

He lamented that the ongoing strike is the most prolonged industrial action embarked on by the university lecturers.

According to him, NANS would engage the Federal Government representatives and ASUU leaders to find a lasting solution to resolve the stalemate in negotiations between the two arms.

The NANS president said after consultation with the two parties and should the strike not be called off as soon as possible, NANS would move in and shut down all tertiary institutions in the country.

“In the history of ASUU strike, this is the longest ASUU strike so far, going to nine months now. My administration frowns at it. We will be meeting with the representatives of the Federal Government and that of ASUU to see how the two can shift grounds so that our students can go back to the classroom. It is just a story of where two elephants fight, the grass there suffers it.

“There must be a lasting solution, ASUU must stop this strike and Federal Government must listen to ASUU. The two should synergise, they should pity the common students who have been at home.

“If you are talking about money, the Federal Government will still release the money at the end of the day. The strike has not stopped the salaries of ASUU (members). But it is the students that are at the receiving end of this long ASUU strike.

Continuing, he said, “Before we mobilise our students to the streets to engage in a confrontation with the government, we believe ASUU and FG should sit and resolve the whole issue. That is how interest. We are tired of being at home. We want to go back to school.”

“We have three Cs, we have embarked on the first C which is ‘Consultation’ and we are going to ‘Consolidate’ on our ‘Consultation’. We will get to a stage before the end of this year when we will get the two of them seated on a roundtable. We will force the two parties to make a decision because they are toying with the lives of Nigerian students.

“If they fail to resolve the issue, we are going to embark on the third C which is ‘Confrontation’. We are going to shut down all private universities in this country. And after that, we are going to engage in a mass action. Because majority of the children of ASUU (members) and the rich are in private schools and they are not affected. That is why they are toying with the lives of the common Nigerian students,” NANS president stated

UK Issues Allergy Warning Over Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine

UK Issues Allergy Warning Over Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine

British health officials on Wednesday warned that anyone with a history of significant allergic reactions should not have the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid jab for the time being.

The warning came after two members of the state-run National Health Service who were among the first to receive the vaccine on Tuesday suffered allergic reactions and needed treatment.

NHS England medical director Stephen Powis said both people, who had a history of reactions, were now recovering well.

The Independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has now advised that “people with a significant history of allergic reactions do not receive this vaccination” as a precaution, he added.

“Significant” allergic reactions include those to medicines, food or vaccines, according to the MHRA.

Thousands of Britons became the first in the Western world to receive an approved Covid vaccine on Tuesday as the NHS began the biggest vaccination drive since it was created in 1948.

The vaccine is administered in two doses, 21 days apart. The over-80s and health and social care staff are first in line to get the jab in the national rollout.

Britain has received some 800,000 doses of the vaccine in the first batch of an order of 40 million. Up to four million doses are expected by the end of December.

Pfizer chief executive Albert Bourla on Tuesday said he understood global concerns about the speed with which pharmaceutical companies have produced vaccines against Covid-19.

But he insisted no corners have been cut.

The vaccine had been tested “in the exact same way as we are testing any vaccine that is circulating out there”, he told a virtual media briefing in Geneva.

Pfizer said the MHRA had told it of the allergic reactions but said during phase 3 trials of more than 40,000 people, the vaccine was “generally well-tolerated with no serious safety concerns” reported.

Steep Price: Very Low Patronage As Lagos-Ibadan Railway Kicks Off With Only One Passenger

Steep Price: Very Low Patronage As Lagos-Ibadan Railway Kicks Off With Only One Passenger

Only one passenger turned up and made the historic trip from Ibadan to Lagos yesterday as the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge train started operation.

The newly introduced service, according to the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), provides fully air-conditioned train services in the Economy, Business and First Class categories.

The corporation deployed only one Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) to kick-start the operation.

Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi had announced a price regime of N3,000 for the Economy, N5,000 for the Business and N6,000 for First Class.

Nigerians had appealed for a reduction of the fares, which many saw as unaffordable for the masses.

Our correspondent gathered that the inaugural train service, which originated from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, left around 8.20 a.m and arrived Lagos at 10.40 a.m with less than five passengers on board.

No passenger was picked at Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

“We had one passenger from Ibadan to Lagos, and this is not unusual. The service is just commencing. I’m sure as time goes on, the patronage will improve. Don’t forget again that we are approaching Christmas and New Year when patronage is expected to drastically improve,” a source on the inaugural trip told The Nation yesterday.

The Railway District Manager for Lagos, Jerry Oche said: “The Lagos Ibadan standard gauge train affords members of the public the opportunity to leave Ibadan for Lagos at 8 a.m and return at 4 p.m the same day.”

The district manager confirmed that the journey time from Lagos to Ibadan is two and a half hours.

This, he said, “makes more sense, going by recent reports of traffic gridlock that has characterised Lagos-Ibadan road, due to ongoing road construction along that axis”.

Oche urged Nigerians to embrace the new service, which he described as a new dawn in railway modernisation.

The district manager added that all major rules and regulations guiding train operations, like the use of nose masks and hand-washing in compliance with COVID-19 protocols, must be observed.

The train left Lagos at 4.10 p.m for Ibadan with five passengers. The NRC said it would run one schedule of commercial service until patronage picks up.

Donald Trump Handed Major Blow In Contesting 2020 Election Results

Donald Trump Handed Major Blow In Contesting 2020 Election Results

The race to The White House in the United States of America seems to be coming to an end, with Donald Trump looking likely to be handed a major blow in his pursuit in his contest for the elections.

Donald Trump has been a bitter man after his ambitions of staying in office for another one more term were blown away by Joe Biden.

Trump was over confident that he will outshine Biden in the elections, but things never went his way. By the conclusion of Pennsylvania State vote count, Democratic Party nominee Joe Biden had surpassed the 270 electoral college votes required as he gained 306 votes against the 215 votes of Donald Trump.

According to CNN news reports, The Supreme Court has handed Trump a major blow in an attempt to overthrow the elections.

His Pennsylvania Republicans had moved to the Supreme Court to block the certification of the elections results in commonwealth, whereby Biden had got more than 81K, but they met the unexpected.

The Supreme Court wrote to them saying, “The application for injunctive relief presented to Justice Alito and by him referred to the Court is denied.”

This latest blow has put Trump’s quest in the lame as he has nowhere to run to.

The Pennsylvania State votes could have helped Trump regain the momentum in the race because it is among the largest counties in the States, but his efforts have been cut short. Will Donald Trump finally vacate White House and concede defeat?
