Protesters Are In The Building: US Capitol Under Siege

'Protesters are in the building': US Capitol under siege
Trump supporters try to break through a police barrier, Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at the Capitol in Washington. As Congress prepares to affirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, thousands of people have gathered to show their support for President Donald Trump and his claims of election fraud. (AP Photo/Julio Cortez) (Julio Cortez)

WASHINGTON — (AP) — The crowd pushed past the police barricades, up the steps to the iron doors and in what seemed like no time at all, hoisted a Trump flag from the U.S. Capitol.

“Protesters are in the building,” came the last words picked up by a microphone carrying a live feed of the Senate before it shut off.

Hundreds of President Donald Trump’s supporters paraded and hollered through some of the most hallowed spaces in the Capitol — propped at the Senate dais and in the House speaker’s office — all to protest the election and keep President Donald Trump in office.

Trump, the defeated president, had been encouraging protesters as Congress convened for a joint session to certify Joe Biden’s win.

Under the very risers set up for Biden’s inauguration at the U.S. Capitol, the Trump supporters gathered.

Protests are typical at the Capitol. But this one was not.

At least one person was shot and killed, though it’s not clear who pulled the trigger during the chaotic scene. Some in the crowd were shouting “traitors” as officers tried to keep them back.

Inside the House chamber, lawmakers described a harrowing scene.

As they stayed down, they were told to have gas masks at the ready — and take off the lapel pins they wear identifying them as elected representatives.

Police had guns drawn, and furniture barricaded the door.

Glass was shattered. Some prayed while protesters banged on the doors. Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips yelled loudly at Republicans, “This is because of you!”

A chaplain prayed as police guarded the doors to the chamber and lawmakers tried to gather information about what was happening.

Announcements blared: Due to an “external security threat,” no one could enter or exit the Capitol complex, the recording said. Lawmakers tweeted that they were sheltering in place.

Reporters and lawmakers hid under tables as the protesters banged on the door, demanding to be let inside. Rumors of guns spread but it wasn’t clear if any shots were fired beside the one. Tear gas was said to have been dispersed in the Rotunda.

After making sure the hallways were clear, police swiftly escorted people down a series of hallways and tunnels to a cafeteria in one of the House office buildings.

As he walked out of the Capitol, Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes said he “always assumed it could never happen here.”

But others were not so sure.

Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, among those challenging Biden’s win, blamed “both sides” for the chaos at the Capitol.

“What do you think was taking place in this country?” he told reporters. “There’s been a lot of people during the last four years that have just been getting more and more incensed over what is going on around the country, on both sides. It’s just too bad. This is not how we handle things in America.”

The Senate side was not much different.

Vice President Mike Pence, who was presiding over the session, was evacuated from the Senate as protesters and police shouted outside the doors.

Police evacuated the chamber at 2:30 p.m., ushering senators to the first of what would be several undisclosed locations.

Clerks grabbed boxes of electoral college certificates as they left.

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, attending the session, was among those ushered to safety.

As soon as they left, protesters roamed the halls shouting, “Where are they?” One got on the Senate dais and yelled, “Trump won that election.”

Trump Refused Entry Into Scotland Until Joe Biden Is Sworn-In

US President Donald Trump is not allowed into Scotland to escape President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, OccupyGh.com has gathered.

Trump has been refused entry into the Scottish land until Biden is sworn-in.

Yesterday, both President Donald Trump and Joe Biden were in Georgia to rally behind their two chosen candidates respectively for their Senatorial contests. But as it is known President Trump had another motive besides the electioneering campaign.

Trump also wants his two candidates to win the Senatorial election so that he might later use them against swearing-in Joe Biden on the 20th of this month.

Also in furtherance of his efforts at not having Joe Biden sworn-in on an aforementioned day, he has reportedly made plans to jet-off to Scotland for a Gulf course. And in addition to the reports from the official Twitter handle of the Independent news platform the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, has swiftly refused his entry there.

Warding him off, according to @Independent, the Scottish Madame, however, hinted that now is not the right time to play gulf as they are presently preparing for a new lockdown measure in Scotland.

MD FCMB Goes On Forced Leave As Bank Probes Paternity Scandal

Adam

Adam Nuru, managing director of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), has opted to go on leave amid the allegation of marital infidelity.

A panel is currently probing the allegation against Adam Nuru, who has been accused of having an affair with a former official of the bank, Moyo Thomas, while she was married.

“The managing director volunteered to proceed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation of this scandal. Although it is a personal matter, the issue has gone really far and many allegations were made,” a source at the bank said.

Over 1,000 people had signed a petition to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), calling for the sack of Adam Nuru. The petition was initiated by friends of Late Tunde Thomas who was married to Moyo.

They had alleged that Tunde died of depression after discovering that his supposed two children with Moyo belong to the FCMB MD. They therefore called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to sack Nuru, while demanding a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

“This is a case of gross misconduct based on ethical grounds and an unjustifiable economic oppression by the elite (Adam Nuru) against the underprivileged in the society,” the petition read.

“The MD has been doing everything possible to sweep this case under the carpet. We implore the Central Bank of Nigeria, as the apex regulator, and the board of FCMB to investigate this for the integrity of the bank and Nigerian banking industry.”

Ina released statement on Sunday, FCMB Group Head, Corporate Affairs, Diran Olojo, said the bank was aware of the allegations making the rounds against its MD. He, however, said the bank’s board of directors had already commenced a review into the matter, adding that its findings would be disclosed in due course.

“We are aware of several stories circulating across several media platforms about our bank’s Managing Director, Adam Nuru, a former employee, Ms Moyo Thomas and her deceased ex husband, Mr Tunde Thomas,” the statement read.

“While this is a personal matter, the tragedy of the death of Mr Tunde Thomas and the allegations of unethical conduct, require the bank’s board to conduct a review of what transpired, any violations of our code of ethics and the adequacy of these code of conduct ethics. This will be done immediately.

“We enjoin all our stakeholders to bear with us as we conduct this review and to please respect the various families involved.

According to TheCable, the bank will issue another statement on the situation on Wednesday.

SERAP Drags FG To UN Over Arbitrary Detention, Torture Of Sowore, Others

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent “an urgent complaint to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention over the arbitrary detention, torture and other ill-treatment of Omoyele Sowore and four other activists simply for peacefully exercising their human rights.”

SERAP said: “The Working Group should request the Nigerian authorities to withdraw the bogus charges against Mr Sowore and four other activists, and to immediately and unconditionally release them.”

In the complaint dated January 4, 2021, and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole  Oluwadare, the organization said: “The detention of  Omoyele Sowore and four other activists constitutes an arbitrary deprivation of their liberty because it does not have any legal justification. The detention also does not meet minimum international standards of due process.”

According to SERAP: “The arrest, continued detention and torture and ill-treatment of Mr Sowore and four other activists solely for peacefully exercising their human rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly is a flagrant violation of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999 (as amended) and international human rights law. They are now facing bogus charges simply for exercising their human rights.” SERAP is calling on the Working Group to “initiate a procedure involving the investigation of the detention, torture and bogus charges against Mr Sowore and four other activists, and to urgently send an allegation letter to the Nigerian government inquiring about the case generally, and specifically about the legal basis for their arrest, detention, torture and other ill-treatment, each of which is in violation of international human rights law.”

SERAP is also urging the Working Group to “issue an opinion declaring that the deprivation of liberty and detention of  Mr Sowore and four other activists is arbitrary and in violation of Nigeria’s Constitution and obligations under international human rights law. We also urge the Working Group to call for their immediate and unconditional release.” According to SERAP, “We urge the Working Group to request the Nigerian government to investigate and hold accountable all police officers and security agents suspected to be responsible for the unlawful arrest, continued detention, and torture and other ill-treatment of Mr Sowore and four other activists.”

SERAP is also calling on the Working Group “to request the Nigerian government to award Mr Sowore and four other activists adequate compensation for the violations they have suffered as a result of their unlawful arrest, arbitrary detention, torture and other ill-treatment.”

SERAP also argued that: “A detention is arbitrary when it is clearly impossible to invoke any legal basis justifying the deprivation of liberty. Article 9(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which confirms the right to liberty and freedom from arbitrary detention, guarantees that no one shall be deprived of his liberty except on such grounds and in accordance with such procedure as are established by law.”

The complaint addressed to Mr. José Guevara Bermúdez  Chairman/Rapporteur of the Working Group, read in part: “The Human Rights Committee has interpreted this right to mean that procedures for carrying out legally authorized deprivation of liberty should also be established by law and State parties should ensure compliance with their legally prescribed procedures.”

Magistrate Slumps At Entrance To Gov Ayade’s Office As Protest Enters Second Day

One of the magistrates protesting the non-payment of their two years salary in Cross River State, Richard Bassey, has slumped at the gate of the Governor’s Office in Calabar.

The victim was painfully revived by his colleagues and other staff of the Governor’s office in Calabar by pouring water on him.

A witness who gave his name as Godwin Effiom lamented the incident which occurred on Tuesday at the Governor’s office gate and alleged that the Deputy Governor, Prof Ivara Esu drove past when the incident occurred.

“It surprises me about the kind of leaders we have these days, because a deputy governor of a State can pass through the gate of the governor’s office and saw a large crowd trying to revive a victim, and he drove past. It’s unfortunate,” he stated.

Recall that a magistrate, Safiya Iyeh Ashipu, of the Chief Magistrate Court, Odukpani and her two children started the protest in front of the Cross River State Governor’s office over the non-payment of two years salary on Monday.

Ashikpu and her two children disrupted official functions and other government activities at the Cross River State Governor’s Office in Calabar. One of the reasons for the protest was her inability to pay rent.

It was gathered that the State Attorney General paid N210,000 as part payment of the rent. It was informed that the Attorney General’s N210,000 was his personal money and not government’s.

The protesting magistrates who came with their full regalia were at the governor’s office with placards and flex banners protesting the non-payment of their two years salary.

The protesters disrupted official functions at the governor’s office and also blocked the entire entrance to the governor’s office, disrupting economy, social and political activities in the office.

ASUU Says It Will Embark On Fresh Strike If FG Fails To Honour Agreement

• Lecturers don’t have monopoly of strike, we will ground universities – Unions

• Prevent future strike, honour agreements, parents’ association pleads with FG

An emerging report indicates that lecturers in public universities may soon begin another strike if the federal government fails to fulfil its own part of the agreement reached in December 2020.

The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) stated that a fresh industrial action could commence as early as next week.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday indicated that it might resume its suspended strike in February if the Federal Government failed to implement agreements it signed with the lecturers.

The National President of  ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi,  disclosed this in an interview with The PUNCH in Lagos while shedding more light on the decision of the union to suspend its nine-month strike.

But while ASUU ended its industrial action on Wednesday, non-academic unions in universities threatened to go on strike over  N40bn earned allowances government promised to release to all unions.

They described the sharing formula for the money as unfair.

Recall that ASUU  had on March 23 begun a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s insistence that all its employees must register for the  Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System.

Although government argued that the IPPIS was meant to eliminate fraud, the union stated that it should not be applicable to universities on the grounds that it violated their autonomy.

In the alternative, ASUU developed the University Transparency and Accountability Solution, which it said would meet the peculiarities of universities.

Until Tuesday’s meeting between the two sides, they had disagreed over UTAS, which government said would only be adopted if it tallied with the IPPIS.

Besides its opposition to the IPPIS, other demands of ASUU are setting up of visitation panels for universities, payment of earned academic allowances and revitalisation of infrastructure in the universities.

Ogunyemi,  in the interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday evening, said if the government reneged on its promises, members of the union would not hesitate to withdraw their services.

Earlier at a press conference in Abuja, he said the union would as from 12am on Thursday (today) suspend its strike.

The decision to suspend the strike, according to Ogunyemi, was unanimously reached by the National Executive Committee of the union, after considering reports from the national secretariat and various branches.

While assuring  Nigerians that ASUU would fulfil its own part of the agreements it reached with government, Ogunyemi warned that the union would not hesitate to resume its suspended strike should government fail to reciprocate the gesture.

According to him, ASUU is willing to return to classrooms and laboratories to rekindle the aspirations of its members to encourage their students to excel.

Ogunyemi further urged parents to take prime interest in their children’s welfare, learning, better funding, better laboratories, and free development to enable them to compete with their counterparts globally.

He said, “After diligent and careful appraisal of the various reports, especially the agreements reached by ASUU with the Federal Government of Nigeria on December 22, 2020, NEC resolved as follows:

“To accept the agreements reached between ASUU and the Federal Government on December 22, 2020, to consciously and diligently monitor the implementation of the FGN-ASUU agreements of December 22,  2020 in all branches.

“To ensure that no ASUU member suffers any loss of deserved benefits as a result of participation in the strike, to pursue fervently FGN-ASUU agreements in 2009 and the MoA (memoranda of agreements) 2013.”

According to him, both sides also agreed that  the earned academic allowances should be backed by a law and the amendment of the Executive Bill in respect of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Act, 2004.

He added, “Finally, NEC resolved to conditionally suspend the strike action embarked upon on March 23, 2020, with effect from 12:01am on Thursday,  December 24, 2020.”

While shedding more light on ASUU’s insistence on the implementation of the 2009 agreements, Ogunyemi stated that the objectives of the agreements were found to have been made even more potent by the findings of the Federal Government Committee on the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities in 2012.

He stressed that the agreements, when implemented, would reverse the decay in the Nigerian university system and reposition it for greater responsibilities in national development;

Ogunyemi also stated that the implementation of the agreement would reverse the brain drain in universities and enhance the remuneration of academic staff.

According to him, university lecturers would be freed from  “the encumbrances of a unified civil service wage structure.”

FG promised to release N30bn for varsities’ revitalisation before month end – ASUU

Later in an interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday evening, the president of ASUU said government made promises about the demands of the union.

He said government promised to release N30bn to the union before the end of the month for the revitalisation of universities.

He stated, “The Federal Government made promises about our demands and we have timelines attached to them. On the demand for revitalisation,  they promised to give N30b before the end of this month.

“They promised earned academic allowances. On the visitation panel, they have told us part of the preparations. We talked about renegotiation that is going. We have had two meetings already and more meetings will continue in the New Year.”

According to him, the law on state universities and the National Universities Commission is being reviewed and sent to the National Assembly.

He also said substantial progress had been made on UTAS, adding that the union was awaiting its final adoption after its verification by the  National Information Technology Development Agency.

Ogunyemi also said, “The withheld salaries are being released. So with that,  we believe that normalcy should return to our universities. We made it clear, if government reneges,  our members are ready to withdraw their services and we made that clear to government.
