Nigerian Embassy Shuts Door To Nigerians Attacked In South Africa

Nigerian Embassy Shuts Door To Nigerians Attacked In South Africa

The Nigerian Embassy in South Africa reportedly shut its door to Nigerian victims of ongoing xenophobic attacks in the former apartheid colony.

The latest attacks against nationals of other African countries domiciled in South Africa, which started on August 28, 2019, has spread to several parts of that country, raising fears of more violence in the coming days.

Speaking with Sahara Reporters on Monday, a handful of Nigerians in South Africa revealed how they now live in fear.

According to them, some victims of the attack, who visited the Nigerian Embassy for help and protection were denied entry into the place.

Former president of Nigerian Union South Africa, Iyke Anyene, told Sahara Reporters that Nigerians had remained in the houses, afraid for their lives and unsure if they would be the next victims.

He said, “In some parts of Guateng Province the looting has continued.

“It started in Pretoria and people have not been able to do their businesses. It is not safe, there is widespread looting.

“Some Nigerian victims went to the high commission but were denied entry into the place.

“The high commission claimed that they are dealing with the situation but we don’t know what to do. We need results, people are losing their lives and properties.”

He said migrants from other African countries are also affected in the attacks and looting, adding that the South African police are usually overwhelmed when such attacks happen.

He added, “All African migrants are affected. When it happened in Pretoria, the police was there but couldn’t stop the attack.

“In Johannesburg, they were not able to stop anything. It is a very serious problem at the moment.”

A Nigerian business woman, Doris Ikeri-Solarin, also told Sahara Reporters that she had remained indoors with her family for fear of being killed by South Africans if they go out of their home.

She said, “There is trouble, it is very tough. There is a state of emergency and the violence is still ongoing.

“No one opened shop today, our movement has been restricted.

“In Mabupane, they burnt our shops on Wednesday but we were able to save the ones we have around Sunnyside.

“These people are reinforcing and they are coming out to attack us.”

Ikeri-Solarin faulted the Nigerian Embassy for shutting citizens out at such time of need.

She added, “A baby just died in Marabasa because of the fire. We are at home, we can’t go out, our children cannot go to school, Nigerians inside taxis are dragged out and attacked.

“Nigerian Embassy does not exist. Some of our people affected by this attack went to the high commission but the ambassador did not come out. It is a big shame on them.”

Last Wednesday in Japan during the Tokyo International Conference for Africa Development, President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, said that his government will address the killings of Nigerians in his country.

He added that the country’s criminal justice system was looking to proffer lasting solutions.

He said, “On the issue of Nigerians who are dying in South Africa, we feel very upset about that.

“Obviously, our criminal justice system is working on it. We don’t support killings.”

But despite his assurances, South Africans have continued to target Nigerians in xenophobic attacks, killing and destroying businesses belonging to them.

In July, President of Nigeria’s Senate, Ahmed Lawan, disclosed that about 118 Nigerians had so far lost their lives in different attacks in South Africa over the years.

Experts say the figure could may well be above that figure especially several unreported cases of hostilities against Nigerians.

See How Trump’s Immigration Policy Will Affect Nigerian Professionals

See How Trump’s Immigration Policy Will Affect Nigerian Professionals

The Nigerian Diaspora Movement in the United States has said that President Donald Trump’s new immigration policy will over time reduce the number of Nigerians in strategic professional positions in the North American country.

Chairman of the movement, Prof Apollos Nwauwa, made the disclosure on Sunday.

A policy alert released on Wednesday by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, revealed Trump administration’s plan to make it more difficult for the children of some American service members and government employees living abroad to automatically become US citizens.

The rule appears to primarily affect the children of naturalised American citizens serving in the armed forces, who have not lived in the US for a required period of time.

It does not impact anyone born in the US.

According to Nwauwa, Nigerians in the US are of significant value to the country given that they constitute a large part of the human resource base of America.

He said, “There is hardly any American agency or parastatal that has no Nigerian working in its upper echelons.

“Since only citizens are permitted to work in sensitive and lucrative positions, over time, this policy will reduce the number of Nigerians in strategic professional positions in the US.

“Unquestionably, the long-term goal of the Trump administration is to reduce to the barest minimum the number of immigrants in his country.

“The policy will only briefly affect Nigerians visiting the US to have babies.

“It will also have implications for American servicemen, business people, members of the diplomatic corps as well as others, who live outside the US with their families.

“Nigerians who also have US citizenship will be affected the most because their children born in their country of birth after they had become American citizens by naturalisation will not be granted citizenship.

“Trump’s administration is determined to change the US immigration landscape once and for all.”

Government Fails To Pay Insurance Of 35 NYSC Members, Others Killed During Election

Government Fails To Pay Insurance Of 35 NYSC Members, Others Killed During Election

Five months after the 2019 general elections, no fewer than 35 National Youth Service Corps members and other ad hoc workers, who were killed or injured in the process, have yet to get their insurance benefits.

The Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed this figure to our correspondent on Wednesday, adding that eight of the 35 ad hoc workers died during the 2019 general elections, while 27 sustained injuries from accidents or attacks by hoodlums.

Our correspondent can confirm that two of the deceased were corps members, while three others were among the injured.

Recall that about 300,000 corps members participated in the last general elections. Some of them reportedly died or sustained serious injuries during waves of election violence recorded in parts of Ondo, Rivers and a few other states.

In Ondo, a corps member named Ibrahim Okanlawon, who was deployed as an INEC ad hoc worker during the elections, allegedly died in a boat mishap on Saturday, March 10, 2019, while returning with election results.

Okanlawon, who was deployed for the House of Assembly elections, had served in Arogbo Ward II in the Ese Odo Local Government Area of the state, before the accident occurred.

Another corps member, Ibisaki Amachree, was killed during the February 23, 2019, Presidential Election in Rivers State.

Also in Anambra State, the NYSC had confirmed that there was an attack on corps members on election duty at the Obosi Collation Centre in Idemili North Local Government Area.

Unknown gunmen had attacked the centre on Sunday, February 25, 2019, after the Presidential and National Assembly elections and injured the corps members, one of them identified as Benita Sunday.

The electoral commission, in an exclusive interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, said all the 35 cases and insurance claims were being processed by the insurance company engaged by INEC to provide cover for its ad-hoc staff.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of INEC, Rotimi Oyekanmi, stated this, adding that the commission was working with the insurance company to finalise all the cases as soon as possible.

The commission had told our correspondent in April 2019 that it had concluded plans to compile “all necessary information” on the National Youth Service corps members, who were injured or died while serving as ad hoc workers during the 2019 General Elections.

Oyekanmi, in an exclusive chat in April, had disclosed this, adding that the commission had an insurance package for the corps members who served as ad hoc workers.

He said, “INEC regards the life of every Nigerian, whether a youth corps member, ad-hoc worker, security agent or even the voter as very precious and not worth losing on Election Day.

“The commission has an insurance package for corps members who served as ad hoc workers during the elections and we have a history of responding compassionately when corps members or any ad hoc worker is injured or killed.

“Apart from the insurance cover already in place, the commission will gather all the necessary information about the victims and decide on the next steps.

“For instance, in June 2016, the INEC Chairman led a delegation to the NYSC headquarters in Abuja to present a Letter of Appointment to Daniel Oluwatobi, an ex-corps member who lost his sight in an accident while serving as ad hoc worker in Yobe State during the 2011 General Elections.”

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives is considering making the Federal Government to extend its life insurance policy enjoyed by civil servants to members of the National Youth Service Corps.

The proposal is contained in a bill sponsored by a member, Mr Abdullahi Ibrahim, seeking to amend the NYSC Act, which passed the first reading in July 2019.

Our correspondent on Monday obtained a copy of the bill, entitled, ‘A Bill for an Act to amend the National Youth Service Corps Act Cap. No. 84 LFN to make it mandatory for the service corps to provide life insurance policy for corps members and to provide for matters incidental thereto, 2019.’

In the explanatory note on the bill, Ibrahim said, “The emergence and importance of this bill is as a result of the recent unlawful killings of corps members in various parts of the country.”

Police Finally Opens Up On Abandoning Recruitment Of New Officers

Police Finally Opens Up On Abandoning Recruitment Of New Officers

The Police Service Commission has assured Nigerians that the ongoing recruitment of 10,000 police constables will be concluded.

It explained that the exercise would be transparent and driven by merit.

The commission spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, said the management would meet this week to take a decision on the recruitment, which “is currently at its final stage.”

The commission had announced the suspension of the recruitment on Friday following alleged moves by the Nigeria Police Force to take over the exercise.

Our correspondent had reported that the workers of the commission threatened to embark on a seven-day warning strike on Monday (today).

The PSC said, “The commission wishes to assure applicants that the exercise will be concluded soon and the names of successful candidates released.

“Dates for medical screening for successful candidates from the aptitude test held on August 3, 2019, will be announced after the meeting.

“The commission will continue to carry the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders in the police sector along in this very important presidential assignment and will ensure that the exercise remains merit-driven, transparent and according to the laws, rules and regulations guiding the public service.”

US OPEN: Novak Djokovic Retires Over Injury

Novak Djokovic

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is out of the US Open after quitting because of injury against Swiss 23rd seed Stan Wawrinka as defeat loomed in an electrifying fourth-round match.

Djokovic, 32, retired with a shoulder problem seconds after a double fault left him two sets and a break down.

Loud boos greeted the Serb’s decision, with more heard as he walked off court.

“I’m sorry for the crowd. They came to see a full match but it wasn’t to be,” said world number one Djokovic.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka had dominated the last-16 contest in a boisterous atmosphere at Arthur Ashe Stadium, producing a powerful display reminiscent of his best to lead 6-4 7-5 2-0, when Djokovic decided he could not continue.

Wawrinka, 34, will play Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.

‘You know when you’re not able to hit the shot any more’
Djokovic was the hot favourite to retain his title at Flushing Meadows and win a 17th Grand Slam, which would move him closer to Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (18) in the race to be deemed the greatest men’s player of all time.

But he had been hampered throughout the tournament with a left shoulder injury, which he says has left him in “constant pain for a few weeks”.

Djokovic particularly struggled during his second-round match against Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero on Wednesday, needing intense treatment three times before coming through in straight sets.

Before his next match against American Denis Kudla, there had been speculation he might withdraw because of the problem, only to show few signs of the issue in a comfortable win on Friday.

But Djokovic said the intensity of the pain returned against Wawrinka.

“It is very frustrating. Of course it hurts that I had to retire,” said the Serb.

“Some days the pain has been higher, some days with less intensity. Obviously I was taking different stuff to kill the pain instantly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

“You just know when you know, when you feel like you’re not able to hit the shot any more.”

The Serb did not want to discuss the near 24,000 crowd’s reaction to his early exit, while Wawrinka said he was surprised by negativity.

“He’s an amazing champion,” added the Swiss. “If he has to retire, it’s not the best for a tennis player to have to leave the court like that.”

Djokovic suggested he hopes to regain fitness for the Asia leg of the ATP Tour and the final months of the season.

“It’s no secret that I have desire and a goal to reach the most Grand Slams, and reach Roger’s record,” he added.

“At the same time, it’s a long road ahead hopefully for me. I hope I can play for many more years. I’m planning to. I don’t see an end behind the corner at all.”

APGA Set To Declare Soludo As Gubernatorial Candidate

APGA Set To Declare Soludo As Gubernatorial Candidate

There is a strong indication that the All Progressive Grand Alliance will field a former Governor of Central Bank Nigeria, Charles Soludo, as its candidate for the 2021 governorship poll in Anambra State.

An APGA chief who pleaded not to be named told our correspondent that Soludo was being considered above others.

He said, “You know Soludo gave us (APGA) moral victory in 2017 when Governor Willie Obiano was reelected with his (Soludo’s) axiom: “If it’s not broken, why mend it?”

“With this, Obiano and other top APGA members see it as a payback time for Soludo. Besides, Soludo has intimidating credentials and public appeal. We are placing him far above his peers.”

But a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Obiora Okonkwo, on Sunday said there was no time the people of the state agreed to zone the governorship seat of the state.
