Xenophobia: GEJ Finally Breaks Silence On Attacks Against Nigerians

Xenophobia: GEJ Finally Breaks Silence On Attacks Against Nigerians

Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has reacted to the xenophobic attacks going on across Africa.

Jonathan spoke during a keynote address he presented on Thursday at the ongoing International Peace Summit in Sao Tome and Principe.

He urged African leaders to protect lives and property on the continent.

Jonathan said: “To make meaningful progress, Africans must be encouraged to treat one another as brothers and sisters, in love and unity.

“Relations within and between nations should never be allowed to degenerate to a level where citizens will resort to self-help by visiting violence on fellow Africans and their legitimate business interests.

“Growth and development can only be cultivated and sustained when leaders ensure that the rights and freedoms of citizens, as well as migrants, are respected and protected.”

The conference has in attendance serving and former African leaders including Sao Tome President Evaristo Carvalho, Prime Minister Jorge Bom Jesus, former President of Niger Mahamane Ousmane and former President of Guinea Bissau, Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo.

Jonathan, Chairman of the African wing of the newly inaugurated International Summit Council for Peace, ISCP, added: “For peace to thrive, we must first build hope in the lives of the people because hope inspires love, love promotes peace, peace engenders justice while justice guarantees freedom and trust.

“These universal virtues are central to our quest for a peaceful and prosperous continent.

“I believe that the theme, ‘Building a Peaceful and Prosperous Africa Centered on Universal Values: Interdependence, mutual prosperity, and Universal Values’, speaks directly to the need for a concerted effort towards healing a troubled world.

“I will continue to state that the dream of the ISCP is consistent with my ideals and that of my Foundation. The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, GJF, is committed to the principles that strengthen democracy, good governance, peace, and stability while promoting prosperity through youth empowerment in Africa.

“Building peace is a task for every one of us, irrespective of the position one occupies; whether as a leader or a follower, peace is an ideal which we must deliberately work for. Peace is not rained from heaven, it is a seed we plant and nurture for it to grow and bear fruits in our families, countries and the world at large.

“Peace, justice and democracy are some of the greatest ideas of our world. It is the tripod upon which sustainable development stands. Peace and development are mutually linked; none can survive in the absence of the other.”

Serena Williams cruised into a 10th US Open final on Thursday as she brushed aside fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-1 to claim a record-equaling 101st win at Flushing Meadows.

Williams is seeking a 24th Grand Slam singles title to match Margaret Court’s all-time record and will face either Belinda Bencic or Bianca Andreescu on Saturday in her bid for a seventh US Open triumph.

The 37-year-old American, who made her US Open debut in 1998, also drew level with Chris Evert for the most wins in tournament history after advancing to a 33rd major final.

“It’s impressive. To be in any club with Chrissie is awesome,” said Williams, who lifted her first Grand Slam title at the 1999 US Open.

“I couldn’t have done it without this crowd. You guys have literally been here for 20 years and I’m still here.”

Williams fought off six breaks points across her opening three service games before finding her rhythm to dispatch Wimbledon semi-finalist Svitolina in 70 minutes, hitting 34 winners against just 20 unforced errors.

“I know how (Svitolina) can play, she’s such a good player. Obviously two semis in a row is really hard to do and I just wanted to not get off to a slow start and I wanted to hang on in there.”

Williams, who was beaten by Simona Halep in the Wimbledon final in July, returns to the championship match in New York a year on from her infamous meltdown in a loss to Naomi Osaka overshadowed by controversy.

She is chasing a first Slam title since 2017 Australian Open and hasn’t won the US Open since 2014.

Svitolina was attempting to become just the second Ukrainian to play in a Grand Slam singles final after Andrei Medvedev, who lost in five sets to Andre Agassi at the 1999 French Open.

SARS Officials Kidnapped Me Last Night, Made Me Empty My Bank Account On The Threat Of Death – Rapper Ikechukwu

SARS Officials Kidnapped Me Last Night, Made Me Empty My Bank Account On The Threat Of Death - Rapper Ikechukwu

Veteran Nigerian rapper, Ikechukwu has just shared his sad experience with SARS operatives in Lagos.

Narrating his ordeal, the rapper said, ‘I was kidnapped by sars last night. Two mins away from my house, taken to Lagos island and made to exhaust my ATM allowance or i would be killed and no one would know’.

Not by armed robbers. But when u are robbed and they are armed fully, 5 ak-47’s. Blows to the head and bundled into a vehicle.

Isn’t it the same thing. And then after you will now tell me our government is working. Things are in place. Bla bla. Let me tell u now straight up. I dont care who you are, if you are rolling solo in this town and sars get you. Day or night. If they get ur phone. Its over for you.

They dont have names or numbers on their uniforms. They literally said to me “na you burn this our hilux here yesterday abii”. Acting like they didnt know who I was and were gonna rope me in anything they felt or do with me what they would. After collecting all the money in lagos island they start laughing telling me i’m too stubborn that when will i introduce them to don jazzy. Oh so u know me. One even bragged about working alot with wazobiafm.

Thanx for that info at least now i have a point to start my own investigation. I could’ve been shot and left in the dark space on that dark road. No ID no phone. Who would ID me. Who would be looking for me for days?

Afterall my people saw me enter uber heading home. On the island. Shey i’m safe. Good morning. Its a good day to be alive. I don’t even know what hashtag to put sef. Its ok. I recorded a video initially from when I got home last night but it was too long and it made me cry again. So i just said lemme just yan straight no need for in the moment.

Just the facts. We are not safe. End of story. Know as u dey take move.
