Lai Mohammed Says NTA Can Compete With CNN

Lai Mohammed Says NTA Can Compete With CNN

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, is seeking for the approval of N181.5 billion ($500 million) credit facility from President Muhammadu Buhari.

The loan, according to Mohammed, will enable the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) compete with the likes of Cable News Network (CNN).

While defending the loan request before the senate committee on Local and Foreign Loans, the minister explained that there is no better time for NTA to digitize its operations.

“The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2006 gave June 17, 2015 as deadline for all members of the organisation to migrate from analogue to digital. Regrettably, we were unable to meet the deadline alongside most countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the deadline was moved to 2017, which was not reliable and today the target is June 17, 2020,” he stated.

On how the loan will be deployed, the minister explained that the loan is aimed at establishing the media and culture industry centre, digitize all NTA stations, and at the same time construct integrated television services to infuse on network, which is the signal distributor and essential component of the digitization project.

Mohammed restated the need for the country to meet the new deadline, saying if the world migrates from analogue to digital and Nigeria remains analogue, it means the country would be unable to enlighten, entertain and educate Nigerians.

The minister further stressed that Nigeria has the manpower and technology to operate on a global scale, as he said the creative industry was not just about television alone, but film, music, fashion and photography.

According to him, the creative industry employs no fewer than one million young persons directly and indirectly.

Mohammed said, “If this project is approved, there will be more visibility for our people in the music, fashion and film industries.

“In 2014, we made $23 million from music alone and about $53 million in 2019 and we are looking forward to making $83 million in 2025. You can imagine the kind of growth we will have if only we digitize all the NTA stations in the country.”

The minister maintained that the project for which the Ministry of Information and Culture planned to borrow the loan, is about employment and revenue generation, as he said the industry contributes 1.492 to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Abdul-Kareem was arrested by detectives attached to the Area F Command in Ikeja after the landlord Oladipo Abimbola filed a complaint against him.

It was gathered trouble started after the landlord accused the singer of fraud, harassment and intimidation following the singer’s alleged refusal to pay his electricity bill.

Sources said on January 3, Abimbola directed officials of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution (IE) to cut power to Abdul-Kareem’s apartment at Valley View Estate, Ikeja after his unpaid bills accumulated to N535,000.

Angered by the development, the singer, according to the landlord, forced his way into his compound and made to beat him up and strangle him.

Abimbola said he never knew the apartment was rented by the singer as it was his wife who came for the accommodation.

Appealing to the police to come to his aid, Abimbola alleged that Abdul-Kareem was an antisocial and dangerous person, adding that such people stop at nothing to carry out their threat.

The singer denied attempting to assault the man, saying he only warned him.

The singer said he warned his landlord because the man sexually harassed his wife in his absence and had refused to respect their privacy. He said Abimbola frequently encroached on their side of the compound without permission, adding that the man had previously been arrested for alleged sexual harassment of another female tenant.

It is not the first time the singer is getting into trouble. His hit song Nigeria jaga jaga once earned him rebuke from then President Olusegun Obasanjo.

#CoronavirusOutbreak: Nigerian Pharmacies Increase Price Of Face Masks By 271%

Community pharmacies in Nigeria have reported massive boom in sales following an alleged increased demand for face masks by Chinese firms and agents.

They suspected that “the unusual deluge of demand for face masks” might not be unconnected with the Coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, which had made the World Health Organisation to declare the virus a global emergency.

Speaking with PUNCH HealthWise, the Managing Director, NHC Pharmaceuticals Limited, Laide Soetan, said a Chinese firm had asked if she could ship about 100 cartons of the protective masks to China.

Soetan, who expressed surprise at the idea, said the client was also willing to pay for the shipment in dollars.

According to her, prior to the outbreak of Lassa and Coronavirus viruses, a pack of 50 face masks sold for N350.

However, in the wake of the epidemic, an unprecedented heavy demand for the item had skyrocketed the price to N1,300.

Just on Friday, Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, had warned that the world was running out of masks and other protective equipment against the novel coronavirus.

“The world is facing a chronic shortage of personal protective equipment,” Ghebreyesus told the WHO’s executive board in Geneva.

He said he would be speaking to members of the supply chain network for protective gear to try and resolve “bottlenecks” in the production.

Sanwo-Olu, said this at the launch of eight locally manufactured speed boats of the state ferry services, Lagferry, held at Badore Ferry Terminal, Ajah. The governor, who also launched Lagferry, operations mobile app, explained that the decision on the ban was for safety reasons.

He said: “Let me tell you about the ban which we just enforced. We will sustain the ban on Okada and tricycles, mainly because of security and safety reasons.

The security and safety of citizens are paramount to any government. As a responsible government, we will not fold our arms and allow any security breach in the state.

“We will continue to ensure the safety of our people on all fronts. There have been reports of serious security breaches and safety concerns in areas where these operators ply. We had to respond to these concerns because of life and safety matters to this government.”

Sanwo-Olu assured that before the end of the year the ferry boats would be increased to 30, adding that more than 500 buses would be injected into the state bus transport system to ease transportation problems.

Find Out What Inspired Nigeria’s New Jersey

Find Out What Inspired Nigeria’s New Jersey

In 2018, the Super Eagles changed the game with a collection for the ages that set a new standard for how Nike approaches federation design.

In 2020, Nigeria picks up right where they left off with a home kit that fuses the traditional aesthetic of an agbada robe with modern football design.

The kit’s pattern was hand-drawn and is highly symbolic of Nigerian heritage with nods to nobility and family. Nigeria’s crest is placed centrally on the chest with a Swoosh underneath it.

The player names and numbers integrate the eagle feather into the application. “Naija” appears inside the neck of jersey and on the back of the socks in a new typeface.

The away kit is inspired by Onaism, a traditional artistic movement central to Nigerian design and craft represented in the trim details. An eagle feather aesthetic, creatively distorted, continuously repeats in ascending size to create a visual impact.

The collar has a slight V overlap with a thicker overlap in the back. Both the collar and the sleeves feature a slight nick at the mid-point.

The broader Naija collection will feature an extensive array of Super Eagles apparel including a poncho, vest, dress and more.

This was resolved after the organized labour held an emergency joint State Executive Council (SEC) meeting on Jan. 29, to resolve on a notice of 21 days ultimatum of strike action issued to the government on Jan. 3, 2020.

“In compliance with the resolutions reached at the emergency joint State Executive Council (SEC) meeting of Niger state organised labour held at Labour House on Wednesday; 29th January, 2020.

“We write to formally inform you that all civil servants in Niger state are by this notice directed to proceed on an indefinite strike action with effect from midnight February 4, 2020, ” it read.

House Of Reps Threatens Arrest Of CBN Governor, Emefiele

House Of Reps Threatens Arrest Of CBN Governor, Emefiele

The House of Representatives has threatened to issue warrants of arrest for heads of ministries, departments and agencies for shunning its invitation to public and investigative hearings.

The House said list of erring MDAs would also be published in the newspapers.

The Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila; and Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, Wole Oke, gave the threat at an investigative hearing organised by the committee in Abuja on Monday.

The committee is probing the alleged “deliberate and reckless refusal by non-treasury funded ministries, departments and agencies to render accounts between 2014 and 2018 to the Auditor General for the Federation.”

Gbajabiamila, who was represented by the Deputy Majority Leader, Peter Akpatason, warned that the House would be forced to invoke its constitutional powers against them.

He named the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele; Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris; and Auditor General of the Federation, Anthony Ayine, among erring officials.

The Speaker said, “The Public Accounts Committee was purposely included in the constitution because of the strategic and very important role that the committee plays in every parliament all over the world. And any attempt to ignore such a committee, particularly when agencies of government are invited for an important occasion like this, it is a violation of our laws and carries weighty sanctions.

“The House is not pleased with the agencies of government that are not present here today, such as the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the Accountant General’s office as well as the Office of the Auditor General of Nigeria.

“When the MDAs fail to fully adhere to the letters and the spirit of the law, we create the circumstances for our citizens to believe that the actions we take and the priorities that we pursue are not intended to serve the greater good but for the private interests of such persons.”

According to Oke, the probe is to know why the MDAs record late or non-submission of audited accounts to the Auditor General’s office.

He said, “I have been given the statistics of agencies over the years that have refused to turn in their audited accounts. Do we have to wait on Mr President to intervene, when clearly you (MDAs) have the constitutional mandate (to present their reports). Mr President can only give you a job but he cannot do the job for you. If we like to be MDs or CEOs, why don’t we like to render accounts?

“If the ICPC or EFCC that we created, storms your office to ask for your audited accounts, will you be giving them the excuses that you are giving to us? What do you want our children to say about us; the generation coming behind us? Do you want them to round up all of us one day and fire us for failing this nation?”

Oke also threatened that the National Assembly would suspend budgetary allocations to indicted MDAs.

He said, “Despite this workable tripod system for checks and balances, key stakeholders have succeeded in frustrating its smooth operations.

“The danger is that if nothing is done to fix this problem, it will create an incentive for the MDAs to become reckless and non-accountable to any oversight authority.

“Without doubts, the tripod system for checks and balances has not been allowed to work since the enactment of the 1999 Constitution. I partly blame this on the failure of the constitution to prescribe a clear penalty for non-compliance with this provision.

“In such an instance of obvious gap in the law, the National Assembly will be left with no option but to exercise its power of appropriation to allocate nil funds to such MDAs for their failure to account for funds released to them.”
