Police To The Rescue As Oluwo Beats Up Another Monarch

Police To The Rescue As Oluwo Beats Up Another Monarch

There is palpable tension amongst traditional rulers in Osun State, following a report of Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi beating up another monarch during a peace meeting.

It was gathered that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of zone 11, Bashir Makama, had called for a peace meeting amongst royal fathers from Iwo axis over land disputes.

According to the source, it was in the middle of the meeting, which had other monarchs, including some top police personnel, as well as government functionaries in attendance, that Oba Akanbi allegedly stood up from where he was sitting and descended on Oba Dhirulahi Akinropo, Agbowu of Ogbaagbaa town, inflicting injury on him.

Confirming the incident to journalists at the Osun State General Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo, where the assaulted monarch was receiving treatment, the Olu of Ile-ogbo, Oba Agbaje Habeeb Adetoyese, who spoke on behalf of other monarchs said the development came as a shock to everyone at the meeting.

He said such act was strange and alien to the tenets of the traditional institutions in Yoruba land.

He called on Governor Adegboyega Oyetola to quickly intervene and caution Oluwo to avert a break down of law and order in the area.

He accused Oluwo of threatening other monarchs at the meeting even after the unfortunate incident.

He said: “This is indeed a bestial conduct that is highly unbecoming of an ordinary individual, let alone a royal father. How could a monarch of Oluwo status descend so low to the level of physically assaulting another king in the presence of AIG; this is strange to say the least.

” He just stood up from where he was sitting without any provocation and started beating a revered monarch from Ogbaagba, it was the AIG himself that rescued the monarch from him.

“We are calling on Governor Oyetola to quickly suspend Oluwo with immediate effect, keeping him on that throne portends great danger to other kings and the state at large”.

Reacting to the allegation through a phone conversation, Oluwo simply said”, there is no issue at all, I wonder why they are so sensational about the issue, we would take care of it, why are they inviting you guys over such an issue, I don’t think it is necessary.” he said

Top Lagos Politician's Marriage Crashes After He Watched Four Robbers Rape His Wife

A top politician in Lagos, Mr. Olalekan Bashorun, has sent his wife, Fatimo, away from their matrimonial home after four deadly armed robbers invaded their home, raped her in his presence and the incident eventually crashed their 7-year old marriage.

The incident happened at Isaba Street, Ikotun area of Lagos, when the robbers raided the street.

Since the incident happened two years ago, the marriage crashed as Olalekan stopped sleeping with his wife, Fatimo, subjected her to constant beating before he reportedly sent her away from their matrimonial home.

Following the frustration, the embattled Fatimo has filed a divorce suit before the Igando Customary Court seeking for the dissolution of the marriage which had produced two children.

The embittered Fatimo told the Presiding Judge, O.A Akande, to end her marriage to her husband, Olalekan Basorun, who is a popular hotelier and politician in the area for constant beating, harassment and neglect of their 2 children.

Fatimo approached the Court seeking the dissolution of the marriage and narrated the unfortunate incident which took place on Christmas day of 2018, which led to the breakup of the peaceful marriage with her husband.

She told the Court that on that day, armed Robbers stormed their house after robbing almost the whole street. According to the 37 year old lady, who is into textile material business, the gang took money, jewelries and other valuables. She said four of the fully armed men took turns to rape her right in the full glare of her husband, who was beaten black and blue. However, the only saving grace was that their 2 children were holidaying with her mom at the time.

Fatimo told the Judge that her world came crashing when shortly after the incident, the husband changed completely.

“He stopped giving me money for the upkeep for my children, started staying out late and even stopped sleeping with me” she told the Court.

She said that her husband’s change of attitude stemmed from the rape she suffered in the hands of the robbers, which he witnessed 2 years ago and she was forced to move out of the house.

The husband, Olalekan, who was in Court, denied the charges. He told the Judge that it was his wife who stopped sleeping with him adding that the wife said the robbers accused him of dating the wife of a rival politician in the area, an accusation he vehemently denied.

Assaulting Amotekun Agents Attracts N.25m fine, jail term

Assaulting Amotekun Agents Attracts N.25m fine, jail term

Assaulting an Amotekun officer will attract a fine of N250,000 or a prison term of one month or both.

However, an Amotekun officer cannot be sued for whatever he does in the course of duty but only what he does in his personal capacity.

This is according to the Ekiti State Security Network Agency Bill 2020 which has been submitted to the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

Other South-West governors have submitted similar bills to their respective houses of assembly.

Section 36 of the bill states, “Any person who wilfully hinders, delays, obstructs or assaults a member of the Ekiti State Amotekun Corps in the course of the exercise of his lawful duties under this law shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of one month or to a fine not exceeding two hundred and fifty thousand naira only (N250,000.00) or to both such fine and imprisonment.”

The bill further states that the security organisation must be headed by a retired law enforcement agent who is not lower than the rank of Major or its equivalent in any other security agency.

Section 14 reads in part, “There shall be appointed by the governor, a corps commander for the agency, who shall be a retired law enforcement officer or military officer not below the rank of a major or its equivalent in other security services.

“The corps commander shall be a person with at least 10 years cognate experience in security matters; (b) be responsible for the day-to-day running of the affairs of the Ekiti State Amotekun Corps and implementation of the decisions of the board; (c) hold meetings with his counterparts in other states, particularly Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states on a quarterly basis or as may be collectively determined by the corps commanders in those dates.”

The bill also provides for the establishment of an Amotekun board which is expected to meet not less than four times a year.

The bill will comprise the Commissioner of Police in the state and representatives of other military representatives.

Section 6 reads in part, “There is established for the agency a governing board (referred to in this law as the board). The board shall comprise: a chairman, who shall be a person of proven integrity with experience in security matters and shall be a retired law enforcement or military officer not below the rank of a Major or its equivalent in the other security services; the commissioner of police in the state or his/her representative; one member representing the different services of the Armed Forces of Nigeria operating in the state; the state commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the state or his/her representative; the Executive Secretary, Ekiti State Security Trust Fund or his/her representative; one representative each of the Community Development Associations drawn from the three senatorial zones the state; the Chairman, Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers or his representative; the Ekiti State Amotekun Corps Commander.”

Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Wale Fapohunda, on Tuesday called for comments from members of the public on the bill for the enabling law for the establishment of Amotekun corps.

Fapohunda said the state Ministry of Justice posted the bill on its website on Monday to enable Ekiti residents and other stakeholders to view it and make comments.

The AG said “Deadline for the submission of comments is Wednesday, 12 February, 2020, at midnight.

The bill, which the AG presented to the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Monday, will be discussed at the State Executive Council on Wednesday (today).

The ministry stated that Amotekun Corps would also “ensure that all persons travelling along the highways, major roads, remote areas, are free to participate in their normal social and economic life without hindrance” and as well “assist the police to carry out any other lawful activity for maintaining law and order in the state”.

Nigeria Is Not Worth Dying For – Bishop Kukah

Nigeria Is Not Worth Dying For - Bishop Kukah

The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Mathew Kukah, on Tuesday, in Kaduna, expressed displeasure with the alleged poor management of Nigeria.

The Bishop stated this in his homily at the Good Shepherd Major Seminary, Kaukau, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State before the burial of the seminarian killed by kidnappers in the state.

He lamented that citizens of some countries were willing to risk their lives for their nations but such is not the case in Nigeria.

He alleged that officeholders were loyal to their positions and not the country.

He said, “Nigeria is at a point where we must call for a verdict. There must be something that a man, nay, a nation should be ready to die for.

“Sadly, or even tragically, today, Nigeria, does not possess that set of goals or values for which any sane citizen is prepared to die for her.

“Perhaps, I should correct myself and say that the average officeholder is ready to die to protect his office but not for the nation that has given him or her that office.”

He decried that consistent efforts to build Nigeria had failed, alleging that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), remained the only president in the history of the country that had run the “most nepotistic and narcissistic government in known history.”

“The Yorubas say that if it takes you 25 years to practice madness, how much time would you have to put it into real life? We have practised madness for too long.

“Our attempt to build a nation has become like the agony of Sisyphus who angered the gods and had to endure the frustration of rolling a stone up the mountain. Each time he got near the top, the gods would tip the stone back and he would go back to start all over again. What has befallen our nation?”

At Least 30 People As Boko Haram Attacks Stranded Travelers Close To Maiduguri

At Least 30 People As Boko Haram Attacks Stranded Travelers Close To Maiduguri

At least 30 persons were killed when suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked passengers in Auno, a town 20 kilometres from Maiduguri, Borno state capital.

247NNU gathered that the passengers who were en route to Maiduguri were attacked around 10pm on Sunday.

They had stopped over at Auno as a result of the blockade of the road into the state capital, according to residents.

Dogo Shettima, an aide to Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno state, said the insurgents burnt about 18 vehicles during the attack.

They were also said to have abducted many persons, including women and children.

Shettima said Zulum visited the scene on Monday morning and restated the commitment of relevant authorities to ending the insurgency.

The attack comes shortly after Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, said insurgents have resorted to attacking “soft targets” — including road travellers.

In an interview with Daily Trust, Buratai said the war against Boko Haram which has lasted for more than 10 years has improved from what it used to be years ago, although there has been a “minimal resurgence”.

“Insurgency is not what you defeat and it would just fizzle out; they would revert to other tactics. That is terrorism,” he had said.

“They will promote propaganda, to the effect that all the institutions of government would be seen to be ineffective. This is what they are doing. They are exploiting the fault lines in our economic and political endeavours to expand the gulf of so-called discord and acrimony amongst various ethnic and religious groups.

“Why are they doing this propaganda, blocking the road and capturing individuals because they are of a particular religion? Unfortunately, they murder those individuals and send it to the world. These are propaganda strategies of the terrorists.”
