BREAKING NEWS: Reps Approves Buhari’s $22.7billion Loan Request

BREAKING NEWS: Reps Approves Buhari’s $22.7billion Loan Request

The House of Representatives has approved President Muhammadu Buhari’s request to borrow $22.7billion from external sources.

The House Committee on Supply approved the loan request following the consideration of the report by the House Committee on loans and debt management.

It would be recalled that the report was slated for consideration earlier in February, however, the Southeast protested the composition of the projects, alleging exclusion of the Southeast.

The Speaker in a statement in March said the consideration of the report, which had been passed by the Senate was suspended because of agitation from the Southeast.

“I know there has been a lot of agitation about (the) South-east not benefiting from the loan. It is one of the reasons we haven’t considered the loan in the House. I’ve discussed with the Finance Minister and the DG Budget,” the statement read.

Speaking on the report, the chairman of the House committee on loans and debt management, Ahmed Safana said the committee is recommending the inclusion of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Rail line in the next list loan request.

The total loan approved by the House is $22,798,446,773 and to be sourced from the following: World bank; 2,854,000,000, Africa Development Bank: 1,888,950,000, Islamic Development Bank (IDB); 110,000,000, German Development Bank; 200,000,000, China Eximbank; 17,065,496,773, AFD; 480,000,000.

Speaking on behalf of the southeast caucus, the Deputy Whip of the House, Nkirukah Onyejeocha said the approval of the loan is a bitter pill to swallow for her and the southeast.

Also speaking on the loan, the Chief Whip said the Northeast will support the loan based on the agreement that the Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri rail line will be in the next project.

The speaker in his reaction said his attempt to correct the defect proved abortive as the request is based on agreement.

JUST IN: Court Orders Orji Uzor Kalu Released From Jail

JUST IN: Court Orders Orji Uzor Kalu Released From Jail

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered the release of a former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, from prison.

Kalu was jailed for 12 years on December 5, 2019, after he was convicted of N7.1bn fraud alongside his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited, and a former Director of Finance at the Abia State Government House, Jones Udeogu.

However, the Supreme Court, in a May 8, 2020 judgment, nullified the trial and conviction of Kalu and others on the grounds that the judge who handled the case lacked jurisdiction.

The Supreme Court’s judgment followed an appeal by Udeogu, contending that the trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, concluded the 12-year-old trial and gave judgment after he had been elevated to the Court of Appeal and ceased to be a judge of the Federal High Court.

On Tuesday, Kalu’s counsel, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), urged Justice Mohammed Liman to the release of the ex-governor from prison custody, based on the pronouncement of the Supreme Court in Udeogu’s appeal.

“Our application is brought pursuant to Section 159 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

“This is a fallout of the Supreme Court decision delivered on the 8th of May,” Fagbemi said.

In response, the prosecuting counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), the anti-graft agency would not, in principle, oppose Fagbemi’s application for Kalu’s release from prison.

“But we are also urging the court that the order made by the Supreme Court for trial de novo should be complied with by all parties; so that Your Lordship will give us a date when arraignment will be done.

“We want the trial to go on; losing more time will be dangerous for us,” Jacobs added.
