Coronavirus And Nigerian Politicians: Infections, Recoveries And Deaths.

Most people last year were looking forward to the 2020 New Year, catapulting some resolution they were unable to achieve with a determination and promise of commitment to see them through. Unknowingly for all, 2020 has a different plan for the world.

The year 2019 left a mark in the world such that will never be forgotten. If nothing at all, 2019 donated the world the “19” in the now most unpopular disease “COVID-19”, in decades.

What started as a “new form of pneumonia” in  China’s Hubei region and its provincial capital of Wuhan has resulted in the death of more than half a million people globally.

Nigeria recorded its first case of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on February 27.

With the de javu of the ebola virus in July 2014, the Nigerian medical personnel sprung into action, shoulder-high, this will be easily contained; just like the last time.

The Minister of Health, Professor Osagie Ehanire had said on February 27, prior to the first recorded case COVID-19 said that Lagos State, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is well prepared and ready to contain the novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infectious disease if eventually, it breaks out in Nigeria.

Also lending his voice to the assurance, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi had said; “Since the experience we had with Ebola a few years ago, we have been building capacity, infrastructure, revising our policies and laws, training staff that are specially equipped to deal with an outbreak of infectious diseases like Ebola, Monkeypox, Lassa Fever and Coronavirus if it comes here.

“So, we are ready in Lagos; we have the facility, trained staff, and robust surveillance system in place to contain and effectively manage an outbreak,” Talking of Ebola, Nigeria was declared Ebola-free, lesser than 3 months after the first case was recorded.

Announcing Nigeria is Ebola-free, the World Health Organisation said; “according to WHO recommendations, the end of an Ebola virus disease outbreak in a country can be declared once 42 days have passed and no new cases have been detected. The 42 days represents twice the maximum incubation period for Ebola (21 days). This 42-day period starts from the last day that any person in the country had contact with a confirmed or probable Ebola case.

While comparing Ebola to COVID-19, Nigerian health practitioners forgot these diseases are analogous. Ebola virus outbreak originated in DR Congo while the coronavirus disease originated in China.

China is the second country with the highest GDP. In fact, it is number one, ahead of the United States, on PPP basis. The number of people travelling to China exceeds the number of foreigners DR Congo receives in many folds.

China, being a hotspot for world businesses, nations across the world had their cases exported along with businesses.

Since the affluent are the ones in constant touch with foreigners, during their travel or business transactions, the coronavirus became a disease of the affluent. Nigerian politicians felt the impact of this disease more than the common Nigerian. As a matter of fact, some Nigerians still don’t believe coronavirus exists in the country.

In a poll conducted by Vanguard, 33 per cent of respondents claimed there is nothing like COVID-19 in Nigeria. A Vanguard reader, Sarah Mbah on Facebook said; “I think our government wants to get money from international bodies which they actually got and more from well-meaning Nigerians in tones of billions of naira.

” Even if they are faking it, the death of politicians related to coronavirus complications cannot be faked. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in March, less than one month after the first confirmed case in the country said: “States and treatment centres are primarily responsible for case management, with support and guidance from NCDC. These treatment centres are doing their best under difficult circumstances.

“The NCDC will not provide comment on the management of individual cases. We also ask the public to respect the privacy of individuals and families who are affected at this time.”

Subsequently, most COVID-19 cases that have been gaining media attention are either from an elite or a politician. Politicians have a larger share.

Operatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos, have refused departure of 58 Nigerian doctors.

The Spokesman of the service, Sunday James, disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

Mr James said the doctors attempted traveling aboard a UK bound aircraft flight number ENT 550, registration number SP-ES that flew in from London.

According to him, 56 of the doctors had no visa for entry to the United Kingdom, while only two (2) had visas.

“The 58 Medical Doctors were refused departure in line with Section 31 subsection 2a and b, of Act 2015.

“This means, on powers conferred on the Comptroller General, NIS, Mr Muhammad Babandede, to prohibit departure of any person under the conditions stated in the Act.

“The chartered flight approved for landing in Nigeria was to carry 42 medical doctors for a training program but they were 58 with only two having visas for entry into the UK.

“A situation that calls for refusal of departure,” he said.

Mr James said NIS as the agency saddled with control of entry and departure from Nigeria of persons would not allow individuals or groups of well-educated Nigerians to disobey the laws.

He added that those who should know the procedures for travelling out of their country and the requirements, which include having a valid visa for entry into a destination country to leave, should not violate the laws.

“This is to avoid refusal of entry and repatriation back to Nigeria amidst COVID-19 pandemic.

“And also spreading the same as well as flouting the Federal Government’s directive on restriction of international flights unless for essential reasons as approved by the government.

“There is no official communication to the Service from the Ministry of Health in Nigeria or any known Medical body notifying the NIS of the travel of this number of medical doctors.

“The aircraft has departed for London without the medical doctors.

“The Comptroller General is taking this opportunity to advise Nigerians to always adhere to travel protocols.

“They should ensure they have valid passports with valid visas to the country they intended travelling to before going to any Airport, Seaport or Land Border Control to avoid refusal to depart.

Anthony Joshua calls on elite athletes to form union to fight racism.

Heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has called on elite athletes to create a ‘union’ to help the fight against racism.

Joshua has been a vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and believes the best course of action to take is for athletes to come together in the fight against racism because “an individual trying to make a change is a lot more difficult than a union of people trying”.

Joshua said: “Athletes have the biggest platform, so we all judge on that. I think an individual trying to make a change is a lot more difficult than a union of people trying. “And I think the images that we need to represent are important. The same way I rally for Under Armour, the same way I rally for Range Rover is the same way I should rally for the African Caribbean community.

Joshua attended a protest in Watford last month and reciting a passionate speech calling on everyone to “inject the vaccine”. At the protest, Joshua said: “From today onwards be proud. We can no longer sit back and remain silent on the senseless, unlawful killings, sly racism of another human being based only on, what? Their skin colour.

Osinbajo had on Thursday asked the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, to investigate allegations that he received N4 billion from Magu.

This was contained in a petition addressed to Adamu through Osinbajo’s lawyer, Taiwo Osipitan and dated July 8, 2020.

And reacting to this, Ude said the Nigerian police cannot arrest him and insisted that Osinbajo must first resign as Vice President before dragging him to court.

He said that since the Vice President is denying the allegation, the Presidential Panel investigating Magu and the police, should be compelled to release the verbatim transcripts of Magu’s confessions.

Ude, a former Director of Strategy and Communications under President Goodluck Jonathan administration, Chief, tweeted, “Since Osinbajo, the Star Boy, is denying, let’s have lawyers compel the Presidential Panel investigating Magu and the Police, to release the verbatim transcripts of Magu’s confessions. This is not about waving immunity.

“I am not afraid of Osinbajo and his minions. If he indeed wants to go to court, he needs to resign first, and sue me. He cannot be VP and be using state resources to intimidate the Judiciary. He cannot wave an immunity that he didn’t place. Osinabjo should resign first!

“Osinbajo should have used the U.S Police, FBI or even the CIA to charge me for criminal defamation. Using the Nigerian Police is a waste of poor Nigerian taxpayers money. Except his aim is to arrest me in Nigeria, lock me up forever. Anyway, perhaps Na my ghost dem go arrest.”
