I Don’t Think Nigerian Military Has Capacity To Be Accountable—Campbell

John Campbell, a former US Ambassador to Nigeria, says Nigerians have lost trust and confidence in the government.

He berated the attitude of the government and Nigerian politicians, saying the people have never been at the centre of governance in the country.

Campbell spoke during an interactive session on insecurity organised by SaharaTV over the weekend.

John Campbell

The US envoy says he does not think the Nigerian military can be transparent and accountable.

“The lack of confidence and faith amongst many Nigerians in the institutions of government is very worrisome,” he said.

Campbell said Nigerian political leaders have had a long history of not being accountable to the people. This, according to him, reflects on how the country’s big budget for defence has not yielded much success.

“This culture feeds directly into corruption and institutional weakness,” the former ambassador said.

Campbell stressed the need for restructuring in Nigeria so that the institutions are accountable to citizens.

“There is no formula to restructuring, all that is needed is for the people to sit, think, look for what will work for everyone and create a strategy,” he said.

In her remarks, Aisha Yesufu, rights activist and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls movement, noted that the primary function of the government was to secure the lives and property of citizens but added that the government had failed to do that.

She said Nigerians allowed the government to get away with the abdication of their duties.

She said, “The Nigerian government has not only failed the Nigerian people, but they have also failed themselves. You see the impunity, disregard and disdain for Nigerians. They can get away with it because we are a nation of people who are ready to allow them to abdicate their responsibilities.”

Ossai Ojigho, Country Director, Amnesty International in Nigeria, said equity, fairness and justice make it a lot easier to navigate the cumbersome nature of the classifications.

“The government says we are one, but they do not address the divisions and the dissatisfaction that the people harbour towards themselves. They deliberately set the narrative of difference to push a certain agenda,” she added.

Dr Kole Shettima, a public scientist, stressed the need for continuous activism to strengthen institutions across the board.

“We have significant structural problems and constitutional problems. We need to challenge the constitution. I believe that we have to challenge it in different ways and manners to protect the little spaces that we have.

“Part of the strategy is to empower individuals and even some state governments to challenge powers at the centre.

“If many of our state governors become president of Nigeria, we are probably going to be in the worst situation than we have found ourselves because of the way they have been behaving and trampling on the rights of people,” he said.

We Spend N1m Daily On Each COVID-19 Patient With Severe Illness —LASG

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, has said that the government spends up to N1m daily on each COVID-19 patient in critical condition.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Abayomi said the state may experience the peak of Coronavirus by August.

According to him, the government spends averagely about N100,000 daily to treat a mild patient while it costs about N500,000 to N1,000,000 to treat a patient with a serious case.

He said, “To treat mild to moderate case patients in our isolation centre is somewhere in the region of N100,000 per day.

“That gives you an idea of the amount of money the government is spending on COVID-19 isolation facilities and COVID-19 care.

“If you require high care or intensive care, that amount can go up to anything from N500,000 to even a million naira per day, depending on the complications of the case.

“Do you need ventilation, dialysis, intravenous antibiotics; every case is different, so it is difficult to calculate exactly how much a patient in high care or intensive care would cost.”

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Lagos currently has 13,806 confirmed cases of the deadly virus.

Buhari, Other ECOWAS Leaders Fail To End Crisis in Mali

President Muhammad Buhari and other ECOWAS leaders ended the day-long summit in Mali without a deal to end the heightened political crisis bedevilling the country.

Five West African leaders met with President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and other opposition leaders in the capital Bamako.

President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger Republic said the objective of the summit was to find a solution to the crisis in Mali and added that another summit will be held on Monday, July 27.

The one-day summit came on after a five-day mediation mission from members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which failed to reconcile the two opposing sides.

The West African leaders discussed proposed solutions that had been crafted in behind-the-scenes talks between Mali president and opposition this week.

One of the opposition leaders, Imam Mahmoud Dicko, said “nothing has moved for the movement,” after holding talks with the presidents.

The June 5 Movement continued to demand President Boubacar Keita to resign as the leaders of Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Niger and Nigeria arrived in the country.

“We’re here to demand IBK’s resignation and ensure our comrades who have been killed are not forgotten,” said Yaya Sylla, a young protester, outside the airport the leaders landed.

Obasanjo Flogs His Relative’s Wife With Koboko For Allegedly Stealing N160M

On Tuesday Residents of Olaogun in Ifo Ibogun area of Ogun State were surprised when a former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, stormed the area with a truckload of armed security operatives and allegedly physically assaulted the wife of his close relative and top confidant, Adebayo Molaja.

According to SaharaReporters Obasanjo personally flogged Mrs Adebayo several times with a horse whip (Koboko) for an alleged ‘theft’ of N160m.

It was not clear how the issue came about and what actually prompted the former President, who is also a retired military general, to take such action.

A resident of the area, who asked not to be named for safety reasons, however, told SaharaReporters that Obasanjo was heard shouting “Omolaja, ole! Abiodun, ole! Won loji N160m (Omolaja thief! Abiodun thief! They said you stole N160m)” during the incident.

The resident added, “Obasanjo came from his Ota farm abode at exactly 5:00am while people were still sleeping. He was accompanied by fiery-looking security men armed to the teeth who condoned the residence of the Adebayos. He immediately called out Mrs Adebayo and ordered the mobile policemen with him to form a barricade. He then proceeded with a horse whip (Koboko) to personally flog the woman several times.

“Many residents of the community were shocked. Hundreds of commercial bike riders popularly called Okada parked at the scene wondering whether there was an armed robbery incidence or any other tragic occurrence.”

Other residents of the community, who witnessed the incident and were contacted by SaharaReporters for comments all declined citing safety concerns.

Attempts to get the reaction of Kehinde Akinyemi, spokesperson for Obasanjo, was unsuccessful as his telephone line was not reachable at the time of this report.

President Buhari Embarks On Peace Mission To Mali

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Wednesday said President Muhammadu Buhari would be departing Abuja for Bamako, Mali, on Thursday.
Femi Adesina said the journey followed the briefing the President received on Tuesday from former President Goodluck Jonathan on the crisis in Mali. Adesina disclosed this in a statement titled, “President Buhari embarks on peace mission to Mali” made available to journalists.

He wrote, “President Muhammadu Buhari will Thursday depart for Bamako, Republic of Mali on a one-day visit, following the briefing by the ECOWAS Special Envoy to the country, former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The Nigerian President and some ECOWAS leaders led by the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the sub-regional organisation, President Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger Republic, agreed to meet in Mali to engage in further consultations towards finding a political solution to the crisis in the country.

“Host President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Presidents Machy Sall of Senegal, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire are expected to participate in the Bamako meeting.

“Former President Jonathan was at the State House in company with President of ECOWAS Commission, Mr Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, on Tuesday to brief President Buhari on the unfolding situation in Mali, necessitating the visit of ECOWAS leaders to consolidate on the agreements reached by various parties.”

Adesina recalled that Buhari, had after listening to Jonathan on Tuesday, promised to ask for a briefing from the ECOWAS chairman.

“We will ask the President of Niger, who is the Chairman of ECOWAS to brief us as a group, and we will then know the way forward,” he had quoted Buhari as telling Jonathan just as he thanked him for his comprehensive brief on the situation in Mali, “which you had been abreast with since when you were the sitting Nigerian President.”

The former President had filled in President Buhari on his activities as Special Envoy to restore amity to Mali, rocked by protests against President Keita, who has spent two out of the five years second term in office.

Adesina’s statement added, “A resistance group, M5, is insisting that the Constitutional Court must be dissolved, and the President resign, before peace can return to the country.

“Crisis had erupted after the court nullified results of 31 parliamentary seats in the polls held recently, awarding victory to some other contenders, which the resistance group said was at the instigation of President Keita.

“Riots on July 10 had led to the killing of some protesters by security agents, causing the crisis to spiral out of control, hence the intervention by ECOWAS.”

A staff of the University of Benin was killed and another person was injured when a commercial driver, allegedly trying to avoid police extortion, rammed into them.

Dr. Stella Okotie died on Tuesday, July 21, as a result of the accident that happened in Benin City at about 6:30pm along the ever-busy Benin-Lagos expressway, close to the UNIBEN main gate.

Until her demise, the deceased was a lecturer at the UNIBEN faculty of Education.

There are unconfirmed reports that another person was killed in the accident. Another also sustained injuries.

Eyewitnesses claim the commercial bus driver was running away from the police officers who had earlier flagged his vehicle down, demanding N100 bribe.

One of the officers was said to have jumped into the moving bus and engaged in a physical struggle with the bus driver, dragging the steering wheel.

The late UNIBEN staff was reportedly standing at the walkway alongside her husband, Dr. Williams Okotie, also a staff of UNIBEN, and her son when the bus hit her and a stationery UNIBEN water supply van.

JUST IN: Kim Kardashian Finally Responds To Kanye's Viral Rants

Kanye West in a series of tweets on Wednesday claimed he had been trying to divorce his wife Kim Kardashian ever since she met with rapper Meek Mill in a hotel two years ago.

The Grammy award-winning musician also accused his wife of trying to get him “locked up” for his rants on Twitter.

Kim Kardashian, however, took to her Instagram story to react to his tweets, acknowledging that the rapper is having a bipolar episode.

She wrote, “As many of you know, Kanye has bipolar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does know how complicated and painful it is to understand.

“I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health.

“Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behaviour know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor. People who are unaware or far removed from this experience can be judgemental and not understand that the individual themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try.

“I understand Kanye is subject to criticism because he is a public figure and his actions at times can cause strong opinions and emotions.

“He is a brilliant but complicated person who on top of the pressure being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is heightened by his bi-polar disorder. Those who are close to Kanye know his heart and understand his words some times do not align with his intentions.

“Living with bipolar disorder does not diminish or invalidate his dreams and his creative ideas, no matter how big or unobtainable they may feel to some. That is part of his genius and as we have all witnessed, many of his dreams have come true.”

“We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however, we should also give it to the individuals who are living within times when they need it the most.

“I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this. Thank you for those who have expressed concern for Kanye’s well being and for your understanding.

“With love and gratitude, Kim Kardashian West.”

7 Facts About Breasts You Never Knew

7 Facts About Breasts You Never Knew

The human body is an amazing thing. For each one of us, it’s the most intimate object we know. And yet most of us don’t know enough about it: its features, functions, quirks, and mysteries. Our series The Body explores human anatomy, part by part. Think of it as a mini digital encyclopedia with a dose of wow. Of all the organs of the body, the humble breast has come to represent so much more than its essential functions. American culture places undue value on size, shape, and appearance of breasts, which can make it easy to forget the essential function of the breast, from an evolutionary standpoint, which is primarily for feeding our offspring. Mental Floss spoke to a pair of specialists about the breasts. Here are seven things we learned.

1. BREASTS ARE GLANDS.
Beneath the fleshy mound that we think of as a breast is the less glamorously namedmammary gland, a complex network of fat cells and tubes that are capable of producing milk for babies. If a woman becomes pregnant, the milk ducts, sac-like structures, fill first with colostrum before the baby is born and then breast milk after, and send it via little channels called lobules to the nipple, where the milk exits.

2. BREASTS ARE SISTERS, NOT TWINS.
According to Constance Chen, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and director of microsurgery at New York Eye & Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai Hospital, two breasts are rarely, if ever, identical. “Breasts come in all shapes and sizes,” she tells Mental Floss. “There are lots of different ways to be normal.” The same is also true for nipples and their areolae, the darker colored skin around the nipples.

3. INVERTED NIPPLES ARE NORMAL.
An inverted nipple is a normal occurrence “caused by adhesions at the base of the nipple that bind the skin to the underlying tissue,” according to a team of specialists at Columbia University that answers medical questions in a column called “Go Ask Alice.” It’s possible to have one inverted nipple and not the other, or both. In general, it should cause very little discomfort or problems, with the exception of breastfeeding. Sometimes an inverted nipple can be difficult for an infant to latch onto, but there are methods to help the nipple protrude again, such as nipple shields. In very rare cases, a nipple that becomes inverted may be a sign of breast cancer, in which a tumor is pulling on the tissue and causes it to invert.

4. SMOKING CAN CAUSE BREASTS TO DROOP, BUT BREASTFEEDING DOESN’T.
Many women blame breastfeeding for breast droop, but the facts don’t bear that out. While pregnancy can change the elasticity of ligaments in the breasts, breastfeeding merely changes the size of the breasts, but has little impact on the elasticity of the skin. Smoking, on the other hand, is a direct antagonist to elastin, the substance that makes all skin supple, which can lead to drooping breasts.

5. BREAST CANCER DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE.
People often believe that the only way they’re likely to get breast cancer is if they have a family history. According to Chen, this is not accurate: “Most people who get breast cancer have no family history,” she notes. Beyond genetics, risk factors include “getting older, benign breast problems, more exposure to estrogen, drinking alcohol, and exposure to radiation.” And men can get breast cancer, too. “It makes up less than 1 percent of all cancers in men, but it’s not a part to be ignored,” Jay Harness, a breast cancer and reconstructive surgeon at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California, tells Mental Floss. Women and men should both seek preventative cancer screenings, especially if there is a family history of the aggressive BRCA1 gene that carries a significant risk of cancer in men and women. Early detection is key to helping treat breast cancer.

6. MIDWIVES OF OLD READ BREASTS LIKE BOOKS.
According to a class at Stanford titled “A History of the Body,” early midwives and medical practitioners made meaning of the colors of women’s breasts. A 17th-century midwife, Jane Sharp, wrote about the English women she tended to: “The Nipples are red after Copulation, red as a Strawberry, and that is their Natural colour: But Nurses Nipples, when they give Suck, are blue, and they grow black when they are old.”

7. IT’S NOT JUST MEN WHO STARE AT WOMEN’S BREASTS.
Psychologists from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln did a study in 2013 to determine whether men were alone in their alleged fascination with women’s breasts. For the study, titled “My Eyes Are Up Here: The Nature of the Objectifying Gaze Toward Women,” 29 women and 36 men were fitted up with eye-tracking technology and shown women with “body shapes that fit cultural ideals of feminine attractiveness to varying degrees.” They were told to focus on the appearance versus the personality of the women. Both male and female participants spent more time looking at the women’s breasts than they did their faces, especially if a woman had a “high ideal” body shape: hourglass, with a small waist and large breasts
