Police Want Me To Withdraw The Case – Widow Allegedly Raped By Police Inspector

Police Want Me To Withdraw The Case - Widow Allegedly Raped By Police Inspector

SaharaReporters gathered that she was taken to a guest house where she was allegedly raped by the leader of the team, one Peter Ebah, a police inspector, till daybreak.

Two members of the police team were said to have admitted this while facing the investigating team led by the DCP State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID).

A source, familiar with the matter, hinted that the two officers subsequently pleaded for leniency. A friend of the widow, who received her distress message on the day of the incident, who was also invited by the SCID, also corroborated the claim by the source.

It was gathered that the investigative team at the SCID visited the guest house where the widow was allegedly raped.

Meanwhile, in a chat with SaharaReporters on Wednesday, the victim disclosed that she was under pressure to withdraw the case but that she would not do so.

She alleged that the police were trying to cover up the matter in order to let the perpetrator go scot-free.

She added that nothing would stop her from pursuing the matter until justice is served.

She said, “I want to make it clear that I have not withdrawn the case. I am still seeking justice. It is not money that I need. I need justice.

“One of the three officers that arrested me has confessed that truly, I was arrested for not using a face mask and that I was taken away by his boss.”

The Spokesperson for the River State Police Command, DSP Omoni Nnamdi, could not be reached as of press time to comment on the matter.

EXPOSED: How Nigeria’s Attorney-General, Malami Stopped Prosecution Of Dino Melaye

EXPOSED: How Nigeria's Attorney-General, Malami Stopped Prosecution Of Dino Melaye
Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami

SaharaReporters has gathered fresh facts on how the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, used his office to stop the prosecution of corruption cases in the country.

In the fresh case, it was discovered that Malami squashed a corruption case involving Senator Dino Melaye.

SaharaReporters had, in December 2015, published a report detailing how Melaye illegally operated bank accounts in the United States of America.

Melaye opened two accounts, one a current and the other a savings account, using the name Daniel “Din” Melaye, posing as a student.

By claiming to be a student, Senator Melaye was able to open a “Campus Edge” current account with account number 4460 1649 8396 and regular savings account with account number 4460 1647 5966 with Bank of America in the state of Maryland.

He obtained a debit card with an account number ending with 8873. One of his last transactions on the account took place on December 4, 2015.

This was the same day he addressed his colleagues at the floor of the Senate, on a proposed anti-democracy bill on social media and public petition censorship.

He approved payment for a transaction relating to the purchase of cosmetics from a Kremlin based MagnitKosmetik store.

Also, on September 1, 2015, Mr Melaye approved payment to a New York-based Schweiger Dermatology.

The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 in the Fifth Schedule Part, I Section 3 prohibits public officials from operating foreign accounts.

After the revelation, Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), a coalition of over 150 anti-corruption organizations, wrote the Code of Conduct Bureau to investigate Melaye.

Malami, however, went secretly to obtain the case file from the bureau and has since squashed the investigation of Melaye, SaharaReporters gathered.

Since Malami squashed the case, the CCB has also kept mute and refused to give a response to several letters seeking updates on the matter.

After so many inquiries, the CCB finally revealed that Malami had taken over the case file of Melaye.

“I am directed to refer to your letter dated March 13, 2020, on the above subject matter and inform you that the case file in respect of the investigation into the allegation of operating foreign bank accounts by Senator Dino Melaye has been taken over by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Federal Ministry of Justice,” Gwimi S. P., Director, I & M of CCB revealed.

Malami has been widely accused of squashing corruption cases he takes over from some commissions investigating corruption cases.

A report by SaharaReporters had outlined a series of cases taken over and swept underground by Malami.

Recently is the shielding of some soldiers linked to the killing of police officers during an operation to arrest kidnap kingpin, Wadume.

Malami is currently embroiled in corruption cases following a series of revelations by SaharaReporters on how he has been acquiring wealth for himself through corrupt means.

BREAKING NEWS: NBC To Penalize Nigerian Info For Mailafia Interview On Boko Haram

BREAKING NEWS: NBC To Penalize Nigerian Info For Mailafia Interview On Boko Haram

The National Broadcasting Commission has begun moves to penalise a radio station, Nigeria Info, over a recent comment made by a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Obadiah Mailaifa.

It was gathered that the NBC could term Mailaifa’s statement as hate speech and sanction the station.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the Commission recently unveiled its Reviewed Broadcasting Code in Lagos and raised the fine for hate speech from N500,000 to 5 million naira.

Mailaifa had been interviewed on a Monday during one of the station’s programmes called Morning CrossFire, to talk on the killings in Southern Kaduna, one of the parts of the North-West region worst hit by banditry.

The reporter had asked him if the government was unwilling to protect the people of Southern Kaduna, to which he replied that some residents believed the government was sponsoring the killers.

The former Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress said, “Some of us also have our intelligence networks. I have met with some of the bandits; we have met with some of their high commanders – one or two who have repented – they have sat down with us not once, not twice.

“They told us that one of the northern governors is the commander of Boko Haram in Nigeria. Boko Haram and the bandits are one and the same. They have a sophisticated network. During this lockdown their planes were moving up and down as if there was no lockdown.

“They were moving ammunition, moving money, and distributing them across different parts of the country.”

Mailafia said Boko Haram had already infiltrated Southern Nigeria, adding that their plan was to spark a second civil war.

He was later invited by the Department of State Services after the interview.

A source told our reporter that the DSS allegedly prompted the NBC to sanction the station.

The Zonal Coordinator of the NBC, Chibuike Ogwumike, said the station breached the NBC code of conduct.

But he declined comments on the type of sanction to be meted out on the station, saying only the director-general of the commission could talk about it.

However, our reporter obtained a letter signed by Ogwumike and addressed to broadcast stations, saying the NBC monitoring team had recently observed a breach of its code.

The NBC said it expected broadcasters to show professionalism in the handling of programmes, saying, “The recourse to abusing, denigrating and insulting the President, Governors, MPs and other leaders does not show us as cultured people.”

Though the letter was dated August 3, some of the stations reportedly received it between Tuesday and Wednesday, this week.

Falana To Obasanjo On Kashamu: Stop Insulting Our Collective Intelligence

Falana To Obasanjo On Kashamu: Stop Insulting Our Collective Intelligence
Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana

Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, says ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo did not abuse African tradition by criticising the late ex-Senator, Buruji Kashamu.

But the lawyer was quick to note that Obasanjo’s message was veiled with hypocrisy, saying “it is against the African culture to aid and abet a criminal suspect in his lifetime, only to turn round to attack him in his grave.”

He urged the former head of state  to “stop insulting the collective intelligence of the Nigerian people.”

Kashamu, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 election in Ogun State, died of COVID-19 complications on Saturday at the age of 62.

Kashamu, who also represented Ogun East Senatorial District between 2015 and 2019 at the National Assembly, was buried on Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites at his Ijebu-Igbo hometown.

The late lawmaker had faced extradition to the United States for alleged drug trafficking until his death.

Ex-President Obasanjo had, in a message titled, ‘Letter of condolence,’ alleged that Kashamu used the instruments of law and politics to evade justice.

“The life and history of the departed have lessons for those of us on this side of the veil. Senator Esho Jinadu (Buruji Kashamu) in his lifetime used the manoeuvre of law and politics to escape from facing justice on alleged criminal offence in Nigeria and outside Nigeria.

“But no legal, political, cultural, social or even medical manoeuver could stop the cold hand of death when the creator of all of us decides that the time is up,” he said while praying that Allah forgive Kashamu’s sins.

Obasanjo’s letter had attracted criticisms from many Nigerians, including former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose.

In his reaction titled, ‘Matters Arising From Chief Obasanjo’s Condolence Letter,’ Falana wrote:

“Some people have said that it is against the African culture to speak ill of the dead. That is far from the truth. In the past, Africans spoke ill of the dead and exposed the dead if they were found to have engaged in abominable activities that brought shame to a community. In fact, the bodies of dead men and women who were found to have brought pestilence to a community were buried in the bush.

“Therefore, Chief Obasanjo has not abused the African culture by attacking the late Senator Buruji Kashamu for allegedly manipulating the law to escape justice at home and abroad. However, it is the hypocrisy of his message that should be criticised because it is against the African culture to aid and abet a criminal suspect in his life time only to turn round to attack him in his grave.

“In 1999, the British Government had initiated moves for the extradition of Kashamu to the United States for trial for drug related offences. But the evidence given in favour of Kashamu in 2003 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration cleared the suspect of drug charges. Consequently, the British Court rejected the request to extradite Kashamu on grounds of uncertainty about his identity and freed him after 5 years in jail. Thereafter, Kashamu returned to the country as a free man and was admitted to the PDP as a full fledged member. He funded the party and became a political leader.

“The national leadership of the party acknowledged Kashamu’s immense financial contributions to the PDP. In 2014, as a result of political disagreements in the Ogun State chapter of the PDP, former President Obasanjo asked the national leadership of the PDP to stop extolling Kashamu as a political leader because he was “a habitual criminal wanted abroad to face criminal charges levelled against him…” But following the resolution of the intra party feud, Chief Obasanjo mounted the rostrum in Ogun State, extolled Kashamu as a political leader and prayed to the Almighty God to reward him for his generosity.

“In 2015, due to renewed pressure from the Government of the United States the Federal Government filed proceedings at the Federal High Court for Kashamu’s extradition for trial in the United States. But the Federal High Court dismissed the extradition proceedings based on the clean bill of health which the NDLEA had given Kashamu in 2003. Dissatisfied with the judgment of the Federal High Court the Federal Government appealed to the Court of Appeal. In May 2018, the Court of Appeal allowed the appeal and set aside the several orders of the Federal High Court which had stopped his extradition. Kashamu’s appeal against the order of the Court of Appeal for his extradition is still pending at the Supreme Court.

“Upon Kashamu’s sudden demise last weekend due to complications arising from Covid 19 attack, Chief Obasanjo sent a sarcastic condolence letter to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State. While praying for the repose of the soul of the deceased Chief Obasanjo said that in his life time he had manouvred “law and politics to escape from facing justice on alleged criminal offence in Nigeria and outside Nigeria. But no legal, political, cultural, social or even medical manoeuvre could stop the cold hands of death when the Creator of all of us decides that the time is up.”

“In defending his condolence message Chief Obasanjo recalled that: “When I was growing up, in our community, when anyone known with bad character died, we usually only mourn him and bury him. No eulogy. No praise-singing.” Since Chief Obasanjo believes that “The life and history of lifetime of the departed have lessons for those of us on this side of the veil” the political leaders who frustrated his extradition from the United Kingdom, welcomed him back home and used him to build political structures should stop insulting the collective intelligence of the Nigerian people.”

Musician Accused Of Blasphemy Chained In Underground Cell At Kano Prison, Denied Access To Lawyer

Musician Accused Of Blasphemy Chained In Underground Cell At Kano Prison, Denied Access To Lawyer

Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, the musician sentenced to death for blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad by a Shari’a court, has been held incommunicado and being chained in an underground cell at the Kano Prison, SaharaReporters has gathered.

Sharif-Aminu, aged 22, was on Monday sentenced to death for committing blasphemy against the Prophet of Islam in a song he circulated via WhatsApp.

He was accused of committing the offence in March 2020 after which protesters burnt down his family house.

He has 30 days to appeal the judgment.

“They are keeping him in the worst possible condition. They have denied him visitors including his immediate family. He has been kept in a solitary confinement cell known as Back Cell at the Kano Central Prison. The cells are dark and underground.

“They boy may get infected where they are keeping him or exposed to cold. They have put a leg chain on him since he got in and he sleeps with the leg chain,” a prison official told SaharaReporters.

Several Nigerians have condemned the judgment of the Upper Sharia Court in Kano.

The Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project asked the Nigerian Government to immediately quash the death sentence, saying it “amounts to violation of the right to freedom of expression”.

Reacting to the issue, rights lawyer, Tope Akinyode, described the death sentence as “preposterous” and “antithetical to democratic tenets”.

COVID-19: Lagos Local Government Boss Loses Life To Deadly Virus

COVID-19: Lagos Local Government Boss Loses Life To Deadly Virus
The deceased Chairman of Onigbogbo LCDA, Babatunde Oke

Tragedy struck in the early hours Wednesday, when the Chairman of Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area, LCDA of Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Oke, reportedly died as a result of COVID-19 complications.

It was gathered that Oke, a second-term council boss, who had been sick for a while and recuperating suddenly took ill and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment. before he gave up the ghost in the early hours Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

According to a source, Oke, who contracted COVID-19 recently, was receiving treatment at the Gbagada Isolation Centre until his case became critical and he had to be moved to St. Nicholas Hospital where he died early this morning. (Wednesday).

The latest death will make it the third casualties of council bosses who died of COVID-19 complications in the state.

A senior official of the council who preferred anonymity confirmed the death, saying, “We lost our chairman to the cold hand of death this morning (Wednesday) due to COVID-19 complications. It’s so sad.”

Reacting to the demise, Chairman of Conference 57, a group of 57 council chairmen in Lagos, Mrs. Omolola Essien, expressed shock, describing it as “sad and unfortunate.”

According to Essien, “This is another sad day for chairmen in Lagos. I woke up this morning to receive the sad news of the death of one of us, Babatunde Oke of Onigbogbo LCDA.

“Though, I learned he had been sick for a while and reportedly getting better only to suddenly died this morning to suspected COVID-19 pandemic in a hospital.

“Oke’s death will make it the third in the series of council chairmen reportedly died of COVID-19 complications. We are in a mourning mood. Intact, I’m short of words. Oke was a hardworking, diligent council boss and a faithful All Progressives Congress, APC party leader in all ramifications. He will be sorely missed.”

Commenting on the need for massive sensitization and enlightenment on the part of council bosses to be careful in handling the pandemic, Conference 57 chairman, said, “We (council bosses) have a platform where we discuss and deliberate on issues.

We have constantly been educating ourselves on the pandemic because of our close contact with the people at the grassroots considering the fact that the virus is at the community level now.

“This latest death has brought to the fore the need for our members,(council bosses) to go for COVID-19 test to determine their state of health so that we can prevent this kind of sudden death in the future.

“It has also brought to the fore that COVID-19 is real and there is the need for everyone to keep safe. I marvel when at the rate our people behave in market places, in the streets and other gatherings because of total disregard to social distancing and safety protocols.

“I’m using this platform, therefore, to urge council bosses to go for tests immediately. I have been tested before and came out negative. I will also go for another test because the fact that one has taken the test before and proved negative doesn’t mean he or she can’t contract the virus again.

Thus, based on this fact, I’m ready to take the second test and I will be doing that immediately.” “We also have to be prayerful to God to take this pandemic away. Observing safety protocols and fervent prayers we can surmount this pandemic together.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I commiserate with family and staff of Onogbogbo LCDA on this great and sad loss of their breadwinner and boss. I pray God will forgive the deceased his sins and grant him eternal rest and give the family the fortitude to bear the loss.”

BREAKING NEWS: Kanye West Facing Years In Prison For Electoral Fraud

BREAKING NEWS: Kanye West Facing Years In Prison For Electoral Fraud

Given that he didn’t announce his candidacy until July, Kanye West’s presidential bid has been an uphill battle from the start. But now, his campaign is facing a brand-new hurdle to appear on ballots in November, in the form of suggestions of potential electoral fraud.

The rapper has filed petitions to appear on the presidential ticket in 10 states, but so far has only managed to secure a spot on Oklahoma’s ballot, although he has many petitions pending review. While he managed to meet the filing deadlines for Illinois and New Jersey, the two states are now throwing West’s eligibility into doubt after both announced that the majority of the signatures submitted as part of his petition are invalid.

The latest issue has come in West’s home state, where Chicago’s WTTW reported that he was 1,300 signatures short of the necessary 2,500 needed to appear on the Illinois ballot. A hearing officer determined that only 1,200 signatures submitted were valid after the 46th Ward Democratic committee member, Sean Tenner, was inspired to take a closer look at the rapper’s petition. WTTW reported that the petition submitted by his campaign with the help of GOP officials in Wisconsin is also being challenged.

Last week, NJ.com reported that West’s campaign withdrew his petition hours before a scheduled hearing to determine his application’s validity after an elections lawyer questioned over 700 signatures his team submitted. West submitted 1,327 signatures to the New Jersey Division of Elections ahead of the July 27 deadline. Two days later, Florham Park–based elections attorney Scott Salmon says he found hundreds of suspicious signatures with issues including no last name, no municipality listed, people who were not registered to vote or didn’t live in New Jersey.

Salmon told NJ Advance Media, “I am glad to see the Kanye campaign has realized that their petition was not going to survive here. It was so clearly deficient that it wasn’t even worth defending. I think that’s the main takeaway here. I wish it wouldn’t have gotten this far.”

Additionally, a New York Times investigation found there are a number of Republican activists helping West get on the ballot, including Mark Jacoby whose company Let the Voters Decide has been collecting signatures in Ohio, West Virginia, and Arkansas. While working for the California Republican Party in 2008, Jacoby was arrested on voter-fraud charges and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor. Voter-registration fraud carries a penalty of up to three years in prison, according to CBS News.

West’s team has until August 21 to refute Illinois’s determination regarding the invalid signatures when the findings will be presented to the Illinois State Board of Elections. No official charges of voter-registration fraud have been filed against West or his campaign as of now.
