OPINION: Excellence is Attitudinal Behavioural Science By Sy Mokadi

OPINION: Excellence is Attitudinal Behavioural Science By Sy Mokadi

In any situation, one always has two options. Change or accept the situation. Most failures come from the indecision not to change or accept a situation. Excellence pursuit is a choice not to tweak but overhaul (transform) a situation. It engenders ethos of thinking, acting and performing anew.

For this reason, it triggers two opposing forces: the force of resistance versus the force of exploration. While in some cases, these forces represent preserving self-interests versus pursuing common interests, in most cases, it is fear versus risk appetite.

The force of resistance fears to forfeit the comfort zone and protects it even at the risk of becoming irrelevant. In contrast, the force of exploration heeds the advice of Greek philosopher, Herodotus: “it is better by noble boldness to run the risk of being subject to half of the evils we anticipate than remain in cowardly listlessness for fear of what may happen”.

Although it is scary to abandon the comfort zone, the force of exploration is not willing to forfeit relevance. Relevance determines who advances and who perishes. Those who adapt, secure future existence and those who fall head into oblivion.

With time, in-between the two forces emerges the third force. The force of fence sitting; the indecision to play not to lose; the choice to be stuck between resistance and exploration.

At the outset, the force of fence-sitting is transient and appears insignificant. However, if it changes heart, it can give impetus to either of the two other forces.

Just as in democracies dominated by two political parties where elections are won or lost through the swing vote of independent voters, the force of fence sitting may join and win it for the force of resistance or for the force of exploration. This makes it a force to be reckoned with and to be ignored at one’s own peril.

Excellence is behavioural science because its primary conduit is settled character, mode of thinking and behavioural pattern called attitude. In excellence pursuit, real change is attitudinal.

Until attitude changes, excellence remains elusive. Therefore, excellence is most difficult to achieve because attitudinal change is mostly resisted. Three reasons explain why.

Firstly, the power of attitude is the power of belief. Attitude expresses people’s deepest beliefs. To change attitude is to change people’s deepest belief(s). This makes attitude most difficult to dislodge.

Secondly, as witnessed from the corona virus pandemic, it takes time to realize that change is a friend. Some people would rather perish than change their attitude. They would rather choose the fatal denialism of living as if today is yesterday; gather and drink, smoke and weaken their lungs further and hit the bars, only to go home in the morning.

Thirdly, according to Robert Greene (2006), the future belongs to groups that are fluid, fast and non-linear. Excellence pursuit seeks to make an enterprise adaptive. It prepares an enterprise to assume a vantage position in the future.

In the future triggers resistance because while excellence pursuit requires attitudinal change in the present, it promises prosperity in the future. This promise amounts to abstraction; the intangible; that which can neither be seen nor touched. Intangibility is more likely to evoke resistance than embracement.

Development of a new attitude is evolutionary alignment that mirrors the principle of causality. Robin Sharma (2004) captures this alignment with most clarity. “What separates the best from the rest comes down to habits. You sow a thought, you reap an action. Reap an action, you sow a habit. Sow a habit, you reap a character. Sow a character, you reap your destiny”.

Simply put, choose excellence habits. Practice them to develop excellence character (attitude), which (character) paves way for excellence. Bear in mind that development of new attitude is more contingent on self-discipline.

Greek philosopher, Plato, said that the best victory is to conquer self. Likewise, Paulo Coelho says that without enough self-discipline, one does not move forward. Therefore, just as the believer needs self-discipline to remain faithful to his/her belief, development of a new attitude starts with self-disciplined faith in habits; the unconditional belief that these are right fielded habits.

Where there is no self-disciplined faith in habits, their frequent practice is interrupted and discontinuity reigns. Where there is self-disciplined faith in habits habituation and attituding materialize.

Habituation is frequency of practicing habits with the objective to transform them into attitude. Attituding is frequency of living up to one’s attitude; living in character. Frequency underscores both because practice makes perfect only when the best practice is consistency.

Consistency amplifies attitude and amplified attitude paves way for excellence. In short, in habituation, attitude corresponds to habits chosen to develop it and in attituding, excellence corresponds to attitude developed to pursue it.

Habits bestow attitude and attitude bestows excellence. In reverse, if habits are flawed and the flaw is not corrected, the consequent attitude is flawed and excellence is doomed.

In conclusion, as already pointed out, excellence is contingent on attitude and attitude is contingent on habits. In turn, as the subconscious mind is the creature (incubator) of habits and attitude, habits and attitude are contingent on the subconscious mind.

Therefore, excellence pursuit is a subconscious mind mission. To this end, pioneering American psychologist, William James, concluded, “The power to move the world is in your subconscious mind”. This is why most excellent achievements are attributed to synonyms of the subconscious mind: within, inner voice and intuition.

Mozart (the great composer) said he received inspiration from within. Socrates (the great philosopher) said he was guided by his inner voice, and Albert Einstein (the genius) attributed his success to intuition.

In his study on high ranking executives, published in the Harvard Business Review, Henry Mintzberg found that high ranking executives also attribute their excellent solutions to the subconscious mind. He found that high ranking executives were “constantly” relying on hunches to cope with problems too complex for “rational thinking.” He concluded: success does not lie in that narrow-minded concept called “rationality”; it lies in a blend of clear headed logic and powerful intuition.

OPINION: Leadership In A Pandemic By Sy Mokadi

OPINION: Leadership In A Pandemic By Sy Mokadi

Whilst change takes time and it takes time to realize that change is a friend, COVID-19 engenders ethos of immediacy. Think and act anew NOW.

COVID-19 is a valley of narrow pathways. It attacks quickly, spreads like wild fire and mercilessly punishes any shred of hesitation or decision-making misstep. To deal with it, countries have two options and fence-sitting is not one of them. Adapt or succumb. Embrace attitudinal paradigm shift immediately or face implosive consequences.

As real change is attitudinal, attitudinal paradigm shift is essential preventative measure. Those who change attitude minimise fatalities and live to see tomorrow and those who opt for gross negligence and disregard for human lives by continuing to live as if today is yesterday live to suffer from the hind-sight of regret.

Leadership is a daunting calling for the devoted and righteous. It is immutable and venerable: more so during a pandemic. COVID-19 is evolutionary and resonates with leadership adaptation loop, an ecosystem in which integrated leadership style optimizes itself as a pandemic worsens.

Leadership adaptation loop is common where there is a team of leaders with diverse strategic, thought and servant leadership skills. As assumptions create confusion and worsen a crisis whereas empirical evidence provides clarity, in the leadership adaptation loop, strategic leadership is the first port of call. Firstly. because it is change management leadership.

Secondly, because to eliminate or minimize assumptions, strategic leadership fosters creative and critical thinking in order to have deep understanding of the veracity of a pandemic. This empirical task includes conducting research and /or analysing existing research data, to find empirical evidence.

The sanctity of empirical evidence is the reason why in the fight against COVID-19, medical research evidence is relied on to develop modelling strategies. As creative and critical thinking fosters systems thinking, the solution developed from empirical evidence is likely to be integrated and satisfy integrated solution efficacy test.

Integrated solution efficacy exists when all impact indicators are qualitative: leadership, human capital, resource infrastructure and ultimately, attitudinal paradigm shift. Deficiency in the first three bestows deficiency on the last one.

Development of a goal from empirical evidence is the primary task of thoughtful leadership. The purposeful (envisioned) expression of leaders to do the right thing. In a pandemic, success depends on single-focusing; ability to close off distractions and foster lucid focus.

This happens when the goal: to save lives is supreme and the mission: through attitudinal paradigm shift is pursued through precise messaging, preferably, coming from a single source.

Lastly, a pandemic presents the opportunity to elevate altruistic (conscientious) behaviour and save lives and opportunity to elevate amoral behaviour and endanger lives. The former thrives in altruistic environment, and the latter pounces when leadership succumbs to self-interests.

Altruistic environment is a forte of servant leadership. Servant leadership is humanist and ethical – a realm of selfless behaviour; the quest to sacrifice for and serve others against all odds. Servant leadership is a reminder that the foremost responsibility of a leader is to serve others.

Dramatic Moment Police Raided Conor McGregor’s Yacht And Took Him Away For Exposing His Penis To A Married Woman Before Assaulting Her

This is the dramatic moment that French police raided Conor McGregor’s £3million yacht and took the UFC star away after claims he ‘exhibited his private parts’ to a young married woman as she entered a bar toilet on the holiday island of Corsica.

The retired mixed martial artist, 32, was pictured surrounded by gendarmes at the Port of Calvi, on the French island, on Friday morning.

McGregor was presented with a summons and later spent two days in custody and was later released without being charged.

The alleged victim has claimed the 32-year-old Irishman showed off his manhood and then assaulted her following a heavy drinking session in the upmarket port town on September 6.

France 3 Corse – the major TV broadcaster in the area – said it had spoken to a friend of the alleged victim of the alleged incident which led to McGregor being taken into police custody last Friday before his release on Saturday.

He is now waiting for the results of ‘key physical tests’ and ‘the examination of film evidence’ before learning whether he will be re-arrested over alleged sexual assault and indecent exposure.

Emmanuelle Ramon, McGregor’s lawyer, said his client ‘vigorously denied any wrongdoing’.

A France 3 Corse report reads: ‘According to a witness who spoke with the complainant that same evening and whom we were able to question, McGregor, accompanied by his bodyguards, allegedly exhibited his private parts to the young woman without her consent as she made her way into the bar toilets.’

The source said what happened ‘deeply shocked the woman, who was on holiday in Calvi with her husband.’

The source said he had no information as to whether McGregor also assaulted the woman, who has not been identified.

As the alleged victim of a sex crime, she will be entitled to anonymity while pursuing her complaint, said the source.

McGregor was released without charge, but the criminal case is still active and he could be summoned before a magistrate later this week.

Key physical tests were carried out on the suspect, but the results will not be known until after the weekend,’ an investigating source said on Sunday.

‘These tests are of a routine nature following incidents like this, but they take time, to make sure there is no doubt about them.

‘It is also possible that the incident being complained about was filmed. It took place in a very busy place, where fixed cameras are situated everywhere.

‘Lots of holidaymakers would also have been filming and taking pictures on their phones, so they also need to be spoken to.’

Ancelotti Confident New-Look Everton Can Disturb Top Six After Spurs Win

Ancelotti Confident New-Look Everton Can Disturb Top Six After Spurs Win

Carlo Ancelotti said his belief that Everton will compete with the Premier League’s top six this season was justified after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s towering header earned their first win over Tottenham since 2012 with a 1-0 victory on Sunday.

Ancelotti has been heavily backed with the signings of James Rodriguez, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan, and the Toffees looked a much-improved side on the one that finished 12th last season as they were thoroughly deserving winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“We showed we can compete, which is the most important message, that we can compete if the spirit is good, if the attitude is good,” said Ancelotti.

“I said before the game our target was to fight for the European places. The first game was good, we have to see the second game and the third game, so we have to wait a little bit but I have a lot of confidence. I had (confidence) before this game and I have more confidence now, but we have to be focused.”

Spurs are also hoping for an upturn in Jose Mourinho’s first full season as boss, but the hosts looked short on ideas as they slipped to a damaging home defeat for their aspirations of mounting a challenge to get back into the top four this season.

“I didn’t like my team,” said Mourinho, who complained of the free-kick leading to Everton’s goal and his players’ lack of preparation time in a shortened pre-season.

“After their goal we were poor. We were not physically strong, there was no intensity. The team lacks physical condition.”

Mourinho added Spurs’ pre-season had been hit by positive coronavirus tests, but did not reveal the players involved.

Everton looked the fitter and better prepared side with their new midfield trio helping to control possession, but it was on the counter-attack they wasted by far the best chance of the game.

Richarlison intercepted Ben Davies’s wayward pass and accelerated past Toby Alderweireld and Hugo Lloris before skewing high and wide with an open goal to aim at and Calvert-Lewin begging for a cut-back.

Spurs offered little as an attacking threat, but Jordan Pickford did have to make two good saves before half-time to deny Dele Alli and Matt Doherty on his debut.

Everton surrendered meekly to a 1-0 defeat when they visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in July without mustering a meaningful shot on goal.

But the difference a few months and fresh faces can make was on show in the second half as they controlled the game to earn a first win over Spurs in 16 games.

The only goal of the game arrived 10 minutes after the break as Calvert-Lewin rose highest to power Lucas Digne’s free-kick into the top corner.

Mourinho said on Friday he hopes to add another striker before the end of the transfer window to add some support to Harry Kane, but any new arrival will need better service to work with as the England captain did not have an opportunity to get his side back on level terms.

Everton and Richarlison continued to enjoy all the chances as twice the Brazilian cut inside on his favoured right foot and curled efforts just beyond Lloris’s far post.

However, one goal was enough for a statement win for the visitors and the worst possible start for Tottenham ahead of a gruelling schedule as they face up to eight games in the Europa League, League Cup and Premier League in the next three weeks.

“On Thursday we have a knockout game (in the Europa League) so there is not much time to cry or complain,” added Mourinho.

PDP Slams Presidency Over Attack On Obasanjo, Others

PDP Slams Presidency Over Attack On Obasanjo, Others

The Peoples Democratic Party has berated the presidency for allegedly denigrating the person of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and other leaders who spoke out about Nigeria’s dwindling fortunes under the current regime.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the party’s position known in a statement titled “State of the Nation: Listen to Voice of Reason, PDP Cautions Buhari…Berates Presidency For Insulting Obasanjo, Other Leaders”, in Abuja, late on Sunday.

The PDP was responding to a statement signed by Presidential Spokesmen, Mallam Garba Shehu, in which Obasanjo was described as “Divider-in-Chief,” for his criticism of the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari(retd.).

Ologbondiyan said, “The Peoples Democratic Party has, for the umpteenth time, cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari to come down from his high horse and listen to the advice from eminent Nigerians, who are advising him against allowing our nation to tumble from the cliff under his watch.

“The Buhari Presidency is worsening the sorry state in which it has plunged the nation by choosing to haul insults on Nigerians including former Presidents like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and other well-meaning leaders, who are patriotically calling on his administration to end its divisive, suppressive and insensitive style of leadership that has ruined our nation.

“From its reactions to patriotic counsel, it is clear that the Buhari Presidency has become bereft of the fundamentals of governance as well as overwhelmed by its own failures and burden of guilt for the disunity, bloodletting, and anguish that have enveloped our nation in the last five years.

“It is incontrovertible that the Buhari administration is leading Nigeria into a failed state, where citizens are not guaranteed of their safety; cannot afford the basic necessities of life and where governance has been crippled by incompetence, unbridled nepotism, promotion of injustice, executive high handedness, abuse of human right, disobedience to court orders, brazen violation of constitutional provisions, acute corruption and violent muscling of elections.”

Presidency To Obasanjo: You Are ‘Lowly Divider-In-Chief

Presidency To Obasanjo: You Are ‘Lowly Divider-In-Chief
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo

The Nigerian Government Sunday said former President Olusegun Obasanjo is a “lowly Divider-in-Chief” after he criticised President Muhammadu Buhari of running the country aground.

“From the lofty heights of Commander-in-Chief, General Obasanjo has descended to the lowly level of Divider-in-Chief,” Buhari’s spokesman Garba Shehu said in a statement.

Obasanjo and Buhari were former allies in the run up to the 2015 general elections when Buhari was the candidate of the then opposition party All Progressives Congress.

But their relationship soured about three years after Buhari was sworn in as president in May 2015, having defeated Goodluck Jonathan at the polls.

In 2018, Obasanjo labelled Buhari incompetent and accused him of nepotism. Obasanjo doubled down on the criticism of his former ally in subsequent statements and open letters.

Weeks before Nigeria’s last general elections, he accused Buhari of desperation to retain power, comparing him to the late Nigerian despot, General Sani Abacha.

In his latest criticism of the Nigerian president, Obasanjo said Nigeria was titling towards failure, describing the country as a “basket case”.

“Nigeria is fast drifting to a failed and badly divided state; economically our country is becoming a basket case and poverty capital of the world, and socially, we are firming up as an unwholesome and insecure country,” he said.

But the Nigerian Government on Sunday said the former leader has become a divisive figure. Buhari spokesman accused Obasanjo of praising “extremist groups,” who have vowed to shun the invitation to the National Assembly to participate in the process of constitutional amendment.

Shehu insisted that Obasanjo’s criticisms of President Buhari were devoid of good intentions, claiming that the former Nigerian leader is jealous of Buhari’s achievements.

“Chief Obasanjo should, in accordance with his mantra as a statesman, get involved with problems solving, when and where they exist instead of helping the mushrooming of a poisonous atmosphere of ethnic and religious nationalism,” Shehu said.

“With so much to show and many more coming, it is little surprise that President Buhari would be the object of envy and harsh unfair challenges by politicians who failed to deliver, but continue to nurse ambitions of delighting the audience long after their curtain has been drawn.”

El-Rufai: Kaduna Ready To Pass Castration Law Against Rapists
Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai

To check rampant rape cases, the Kaduna State House of Assembly has approved castration, as punishment for anyone found guilty in the state.

The Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, said government was ready to rid the state of rape and other social vices.

Police Arrest Two Nigerians For Alleged Romance Scam In Thailand

Police Arrest Two Nigerians For Alleged Romance Scam In Thailand

Two Nigerian men have been arrested in the Southern Island Province of Thailand for suspected involvement in a ‘romance scam’.

Pol Col Akanit Danpitaksat, the Patong Police chief, identified the two Nigerians as Ugonna, 21, and Malachy, 19.

The arrests came after Patong police were asked by the Songkhla Immigration Police to track down suspects in a romance scam who posted profiles of good-looking men on Facebook to strike up conversations with women in search of foreign partners, deceiving them into believing they really existed and winning their trust. After a while, they exchanged names and addresses.

At this point, the scammers would tell the women they had some valuable items for them and they would send the items. They tricked the women into transferring money to them, Bangkok Post reports.

The police investigated and followed the two Nigerians, who were staying in Patong area. Security camera footage showed the two had frequently withdrawn money from ATM machines.

A subsequent check revealed that the two had overstayed their visas and might have been involved in the romance scam, leading to their arrests at a hotel in Patong area.

They were charged with overstaying their visas and suspected involvement in a romance scam.
