Bolaji Akinyemi: Muhammadu Buhari’s Nigerian Presidency And His Niger Republic Development Agenda

The scrapping of History as a subject from our school curriculum is a deliberate ploy by the OLIGARCHY to keep us in the dark concerning their dealings against the rest of the country.

Unofficial historical records claim that Muhammadu Buhari’s father was a poultry farmer from  Niger Republic who came to settle in Northern Nigeria and eventually married a Kanuri Muslim from today’s Borno State. Muhammadu is therefore the 1st generation Nigeria citizen from the Buhari lineage. What a privilege for him to have become the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria within a generation! A parallel of some sort between Buhari and Obama! Though Obama visited Kenya a couple of times as the sitting president of the United States of America, that was at his personal cost . We are talking about a federation where things work; a place where the president is a tenant in the White House and  must pay his rent; a facility where his wife as the first lady is the CEO of their official residence, while their constitutional occupation lasts. But our own Nigerian federation spends more money on cutlery for the Villa in a year than we do on any of our federal universities in a year. Our own presidents are a burden to the Villa, adding no value to its maintenance.

The sojourn of young athletic Muhammadu in Nigeria was dotted with favour. In the past  joining the military was not fashionable among young men, let alone women. Majority of Southern Nigerian youths were more attracted to the academia, the civil service and the corporate sector. So, young immigrants in the North from Chad, Niger, Sudan and Cameroon had practically no competition from their Southern counterparts.

Muhammadu Buhari, thus had a rewarding career in the army. He became the governor of the old North Eastern state at age 33 in 1975. This is the average age of some peaceful protesters on whom the army turned the gun at Lekki Toll Gate recently and recorded painful and embarrassing  massacre of the 21st century. Buhari went on to become the Federal Commissioner of Petroleum Resources in 1976 at the age of 34 and within a spate of one year, young Muhammadu has seen it all as governor and a Federal commissioner of Petroleum Resources.

Forty-four years down the line, the youth of that age lined up the streets to protest police brutality tagged: #EndSARS as well as bad administration.

Buhari’s emergence as  head of state was dramatic. Himself and his gang in kakhi aborted our Second Republic and sent to jail politicians of the Southern descent under spurious allegations, while their Northern counterparts found solace in the comfort of their homes where they were under house arrest for the same nature of offences for which most of the Southern politicians eventually died in jail due to the harsh and inhumane conditions of our prisons.

His reign was an allegory seen but hardly heard of. His 2 in C, Major General Tunde Idiagbon held the show and ran it. Little wonder  that the young man Sabiu “Tunde” Yusuf from Daura who is serving as his personal assistant and private secretary had the name Tunde added to his name. This second Tunde is so relevant and influential in the running of Muhammadu  Buhari’s government that the mighty and powerful defer to him, while the arrogant sojourners in the corridors of power kowtow him. But this is another story for another day.

Muhammadu Buhari and Tunde Idiagbon had one thing in common. They were pious Muslims with a leaning on fundamentalism. With Islamic jurisprudence guided decrees drafted and promulgated under them as  head of state and Chief of Staff Supreme Military Headquarters respectively, they were indeed supreme in power. They were so rigid with the implementation of draconian decrees till the liberals in the army who were also Muslims saw the need to step in and allay the fears of Christians in the country who were already feeling uncomfortable. The distrust of the Muslim North in Babangida who overthrew a trusted ambassador of Islam led to Babagida’s decisions to haul Nigeria into the (Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) to regain the confidence of the North.

Buhari’s eventual release was an eye opener to him. The challenges of the poor masses of his community, who run to him on daily basis for assistance was a burden for which he sought power to be able to help them. Buhari’s integrity in this regard is a top notch. He never hid this fact.

He often said: “I am seeking a democratic power to help my people.”

He made successive  attempts to make good his promise to gain power and better the lot of his people.

After recording serial failures, he finally retired to fate but not without recording a  consistent  11 million voters who wanted him to be their democratically elected president, majority of whom are Northern Muslims.  Staring the nation in the face was his alleged cronyism, nepotism and bigotry. It was so bad that his Christian cook who is an Igbo man became a campaign model, as if cooks are critical stakeholders of executive decisions. Nigerians now know better.

Thus in 2014 when Bola Ahmed Tinubu was looking for a way to oust PDP, a Northern candidate was relied upon to do the magic, projecting to take over from such a person. The 11 million electoral value of Muhammadu Buhari fanned his political greed which is today his albatross.

Where the heart of a man is, there will his treasure be invested. If Buhari were a musician he would have sung the song of Maradi as Peter Torch did of Jamaica.

If told that Buhari’s umbilical cord was possibly buried in Maradi, many will not doubt it. His preference for Niger to Nigeria first became an open threat to every concerned Nigerian in Kano when two governors from the Niger Republic graced his presidential campaign. Buhari of course won the 2019 election. Since then all roads and rails lead to Maradi, Niger Republic.

The rail construction to Niger was an executive fiat. It must be finished and commissioned by 2021, the same year the MOU for fuel importation from Niger into Nigeria will take effect.  I guess your mind is as good as mine. Buhari is not clueless as most people believe. Adding the rail construction to the fuel importation deal signed with the Nigerian Government would tell you why the rail was extended to Niger in the first place.

Unfortunately, ours is a country where citizens are too busy ekking out a living. We have no time for the Government. Those who dare bother about happenings in  government and have taken it upon themselves to keep people in government on their toes are labelled idle, lazy and even failures. But we must keep asking questions till answers are provided.

We have four refineries with a combined refining  capacity of 450,000 barrels per day that are abandoned to rot away.

Niger Republic is a small landlocked country without access to any body of water. Though maritime transportation could aid easy movement of products, can you figure out the need for Amaechi’s railway design to Niger? (81b) where a refinery will “grow overnight” with a REFINING CAPACITY of just  20,000 barrels per day. Don’t you think we need to ask how much was the cost of this miracle refinery that became our saving grace the same year that N81 billion was spent on ours without any head way? Yet, we abandoned our own and went to embrace Niger Republic. These useful idiots are unacceptable in the 21st century communication lexicon. But our country seems to me like a nation of idiots. For how else should people who don’t ask questions and for whom anything goes, be described. Sadly so. An honourable minister had asked us to rejoice that our crude oil would finally be refined in Niger and the finished product would now be returned  to us through the pipeline and railways options. Why shouldn’t our Muslims say Allah Akbar! And the Christians say, praise the Lord!

Only a “god” whose dwelling place is in the desert can make a man in this 21st century sign an MoU of $2b to transport crude oil from his own country via pipelines to another to go and refine. Such “wisdom” must be pre medieval, the type that saw the Hausa surrender their land and thrones to the Fulani centuries ago; the same scenario that shifted the Yoruba out of their inheritance in Ilorin to give Fulani an edge; while we must submit to modernisation and allow indigenous Fulani the benefit of it. Wouldn’t we ask questions about what would become of us when a loan taken in the name of Nigeria but used to develop facilities in another sovereign state can’t be paid back? China may end up taking over facilities in Nigeria with no consequences to the Niger Republic.

There is what the Yoruba call “hot love,” the kind that abandons itself while festering the nest of others. This must be the love at work. If it is not, just maybe it’s one for the place of one’s nativity. I still can’t fathom how we opt to transport our crude oil to  Niger Republic at an outrageous cost to us and buy back the refined  product at additional cost.

We have the resources to  run pipelines from Niger Delta to supply crude oil to  Niger Republic, but we “lack” the expertise to maintain our existing refineries which Nigeriens must have in abundance, for our lack can’t be resources. Yet, we say, we elected a government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Daura today is the most developed village in Africa with the status of a modern city. The man, who, 47 years ago, scuttled the hope of Lagos in joining the league of metropolitan cities with a metro line has elevated his village with less than the population of any ward in Lagos to a city, with assistance from former governors from the southern part of Nigeria – Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers and Timipre Sylvia of Balyesa. A money miss road government errand runners from the South East was not left out. He completed a state of the art library for a community whose youths are roaming streets across the country.

Shouldn’t we ask questions? Won’t professors of History and International Relations who don’t want to offend our politicians at least teach us what we need to know about how Niger discovered oil and joined the league of oil producing countries?

Our loss to Maina alone  is said to be around N40 billion, but someone (Ndume) from the North stood surety for him with a property in Asokoro, worth possibly a hundred million naira but allegedly valued for 500 million to tally with the terms of surety. Ndume is being remanded in a correctional centre till the N500 million is provided or the house will be sold to cover the money. So what becomes of Maina and our remaining 39.5 billion?

Where is Maina? Is his ancestral root also from Niger Republic? Could he be hidden among the Sahels and Tuareg who are partners in the agenda to develop Niger Republic at the expense of Nigeria? An adage in Yoruba says, “he that asks questions doesn’t get lost.” If applied, he who is lost and asks questions will surely find his way home. Nigeria is lost to Niger. There are many questions we must ask our leaders so that we can start finding our ways back to Nigeria.

Child Food Poverty: Ferguson Teams Up With Rashford

Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has teamed up with Marcus Rashford to tackle child food poverty.

United striker Rashford was awarded an MBE following his recent campaign which saw the government change their minds on providing free school meals for children during holidays.

Now the 23-year-old has said Ferguson is set to pledge up to £2 million ($2.6 million) towards the FareShare charity for which Rashford is an ambassador.

An appeal in the Times is aiming to raise funds and Rashford revealed Ferguson, alongside billionaire Michael Moritz, will match donations up to the aforementioned sum and described the news as “incredible”.

Ferguson, 78, grew up in Glasgow in tough conditions and believes Rashford has done a great job in highlighting the plight facing families across Britain.

“You have to be shocked at the number of people who are in need of food,” he said in an interview with the Times.

“Marcus has opened the eyes of everyone in Britain. The work he’s done has been fantastic and we’re all so proud of him because of that.

“What Marcus has done is he’s led the way – people will say, ‘That boy he’s only 23 years of age’. People who are in their later ages… should be saying, ‘I can do something’.”

Rashford never played under Ferguson, making his United debut as an 18-year-old three years after the legendary boss retired in 2013.

SANs Appeal Against Appointment Of Federal High Court Judges

A group of lawyers (mostly Senior Advocates of Nigeria), The Justice Reform Project Foundation, has appealed against the September 30, 2020 judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The High Court had dismissed their suit opposing the appointment of 21 persons on a list of 33 candidates nominated as judges of the High  Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), later picked only 11 of the names on the list of 33 candidates recommended to him by the National Judicial Council in April this year without saying anything about the fate of the 22 others.

The 11 appointed candidates have since been sworn in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad.

The plaintiff had in its suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/602/2020 and filed on June 10, 2020 described the recommendation of 21 of the recommended candidates  as unsuitable.

The Chairman of the Governing Board of the JRP Foundation, Mrs Funke Adekoya (SAN), stated in the affidavit filed in support of the group’s suit that the NJC’s recommendation was marred by “impropriety, anomalies and procedural irregularities”.

Joined as defendants in the suit are Buhari, the NJC, the Judicial Service Committee of the FCT, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the 21 nominees. Delivering judgment on September 30, 2020, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, had dismissed the suit on the grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter which he described as labour-related and ought to be instituted at the National Industrial Court.

The judge had also added that the plaintiff lacked locus standi to institute the suit to challenge the process of appointment of the judges.

He held that the plaintiff was not a party to the procedure for appointment of the judges and did not participate in the exercise in any way and, as such, their interest in it was vague.

But on November 24, 2020, JRP filed five grounds of appeal against the judgment.

The appellant argued among others that Justice Abang “misdirected himself in law” by allegedly misconstruing its prayers as labour-related.

It also argued that the judge erred in law “by isolating and determining only the issue of jurisdiction of the Federal High Court thereby denying the appellant a fair hearing”.

Accident On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Claims Six Lives

No fewer than six people were confirmed dead in an accident which involved a truck and a Honda Pilot Jeep in the Ogere area on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

One other person was badly injured in the accident.

Mr Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abeokuta.

According to Umar, the incident happened around 7 a.m. and was caused by excessive speeding on the part of the jeep driver.

The sector commander explained that eight men and a woman were involved in the accident, noting that five of the men and the woman succumbed.

He stated that the driver of the Honda Pilot Jeep, marked LSR 525 FY, was on “excessive speed, lost control of the vehicle and subsequently rammed into the moving truck with registration number KRV 716 ZV.

Umar added that the injured passenger was taken to Idera Hospital, Ogere, for treatment while the deceased were deposited at FOS morgue in Ipara.

The sector commander advised motorists to drive cautiously, obey traffic rules, avoid dangerous driving, excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking.

Government, ABU ASUU Move To Forestall Further Kidnapping In Varsity

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has stated that adequate security measures have been taken by the management of the institution, state and federal governments to safeguard the lives and property of both lecturers and students against armed bandits and kidnappers.

The union also dispelled insinuations that the teachers were already fleeing from their residential quarters.

Armed bandits had stormed the university two times last week, kidnaping some lecturers and members of their families.

In Ondo State, hours after the murder of a first-class monarch, unknown gunmen kidnapped the wife of Mr. Olugbenga Ale, the Chief of Staff (CoS) to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The Guardian learnt that Ale’s wife was abducted in Owena area of the state last Thursday night. It was also gathered that the news got to the governor on his way from Ifon in Ose local council of the state where he had led some members of his cabinet to condole with the people of Ifon, whose monarch, Oba Adegoke Israel Adeusi, was killed by kidnappers while on his way home from the monthly Council of Obas’ meeting in Akure.

The incidents came at a time the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, was in the state to assess the level of damage caused by the recent #EndSARS protest and attacks on his officers.

Coincidentally, a group of armed robbers attacked the only bank in Irele, the headquarters of Irele Council, carting away an undisclosed amount of money and killing one person.

The Assistant Secretary of the ABU chapter of ASUU, Dr. Abubakar Ibrahim Zaria, said following growing fear among workers and residents over the invasion of the university, the management, state and federal governments have taken measures to avert a reoccurrence.

Zaria said the reported exodus of residents from the campus was an isolated case of a lecturer’s wife, who, out of fear, demanded to vacate the university quarters because of the recent invasion, adding: “Otherwise, no other cases of members of the academic staff wanting to flee the campus has been recorded.

“It is fear that made the woman to want to vacate the quarters. You know that different people have different reactions. Though she is a woman, the other women did not do that. It is something out of fear.

“Apart from that case, there is no other staff that has left the quarters because of that sad incident. Incidentally, the woman is a neighbour to those two families that were abducted.”

He explained that immediately after the incident, the union confronted the university management to know what they were doing to arrest future reoccurrence of such incident.

“The management, state and federal government have already stepped into the matter. The union is satisfied with the action; the management is doing all it can to ensure that kidnapping does not happen in the university again. All the security chiefs within ABU, the state and to a large extent, the country have already been contacted about the situation and we are very sure that by the grace of God, such thing will never happen again,” he said.

ABU’s Director of Public Affairs, Auwalu Umar, also said: “All is now calm in the university. It is not true that lecturers are now running out of the residential quarters. You will hear all sorts of rumours, but it is not true. Security has been beefed up in the university and there is no cause for alarm. The university authority is on top of the situation.”

However, one of the lecturers, who pleaded anonymity, said: “I must tell you that the fear is still there everywhere on campus, especially in the BZ area. In the university here, the western side is open for people to come into the campus unhindered. That is where the penetration used to come from. The affected areas are BZ, Area E, F and along those fringes that are open. The fencing is in the frontage and armed bandits and kidnappers used to come from that side.

“Once they come in from there, they are almost free to do anything, attack and kidnap anyone. It was the former vice chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Mahdi that made an attempt to demarcate the porous areas by planting trees. But what would trees do?”

The spokesman of the Ondo State Police Command, Tee-Leo Ikoro, who confirmed the armed robbery incident, however, said he was not aware of the latest kidnap and pledged to get back.

However, the governor has described last Thursday as a sad day in Ondo, saying the killing of the monarch around Elegbeka on Owo-Ifon road was unfortunate.

“This is a heinous crime, an incident that has, again, confirmed that we are indeed, in a serious security crisis beyond the ordinary,” he noted.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Donald Ojogo, disclosed that the governor had already visited the affected area, in company with Ale, whose wife was kidnapped later that night.

He stated that security agencies, especially the Police, had already been directed to fish out perpetrators, adding: “On our part as a government, we shall give whatever it takes to unravel this. These criminals who have brought this sad day on our state shall not go unpunished.”

Man To Panel: Police Inserted Hot Iron Into My Private Part

A certain Omeli Humphery Darlington has submitted a petition to the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry against the Nigeria Police Force on how he was brutalised and assaulted in 2013.

Darlington explained to the panel how he was wrongly accused by his company, First Bank of Nigeria, arrested and tortured for days.

He stated that his ear drum had been damaged as a result of the torture by the police officers.

He said, “This allegation was a crime I know nothing about as all evidences clearly points to those involved. But First Bank Of Nigeria Plc had to instigate the Nigeria Police Force to subject me to (11days) illegal detention with torture, without any form of fair hearing till date.

“At first, (25/09/2013), I was taken to the Lion Building Police Station where I was detained for three days.

“I was discharged on the third day 27/09/2013, but on my way home, some of the First Bank Head Office Security Operatives ( 1. a MOPOL, 2. a spy police, 3. Mr. Okon, 4. Mr. Abidemi) kidnapped me, blindfolded me, and beat me up with different objects within reach. The Mobile Police man with them kept hitting my head with the butt of his gun till blood started gushing out from both sides of my ears.

“They tried to kill me so that it would look like I got lost on my way home but God intervened by using other citizens to rescue me (witnesses).

“The people who rescued me insisted that I should be taken to a nearby police station which happened to be the Ikoyi Police Station on the Lagos Island.

“Everyone joined to Ikoyi station where the masses handed me over to the police with the hope that I was safe but when we got inside, these set of First Bank operatives instructed the police to torture me to admit to a crime I know nothing about.

“The Ikoyi police officers (INSP. Adeleye Bashiru and his boys) proceeded to torture me that night based on the report made by First Bank Security operatives that I was a fraudster and a criminal who defrauded the bank of N355m.

“The officers tortured me by using iron rods to beat me on my joints saying I should take them to where I kept the money.

“Iron was inserted into my private part until i could no longer bear the pains and fainted.”

He stated that the torture continued in the cell for seven days before the police eventually charged him to court on false charges.

He said he was arraigned before Mrs A.T Omoyele of Tinubu Senior Magistrate Court (II), Lagos, on charges of stealing, conspiracy and forgery without presenting an evidence before the court.

“I could not perfect my bail and had to be remanded at the Ikoyi Prison all through the period till I finish disposing my properties just to meet my bail conditions.

“My ear drum was damaged along the line from beating by the police  (doctor’s report attached) and I kept going to court till (24/02/2014) when the case against me was finally struck out for lack of diligent prosecution.

“It will interest you to know that I won a N500,000 judgment against the police in the rnforcement of my fundamental human rights suit I filled against the police and First Bank after my release. Unfortunately, the police in keeping with their position to deal with me has blatantly refused to pay the judgement debt till date,” he added.

Darlington prayed the judicial panel to order the police to pay the sum awarded to him and other compensation to enable him have proper medical treatment as his health condition had degenerated.

Fake Journalism Institute Condemns CNN Report On Lekki Massacre

0

A NON-EXISTING  journalism institute, International Institute for Investigative Journalism (IIIJ), has faulted the investigative report done by the US-based news giant, Cable News Network (CNN) on the October 20 shooting at the Lekki Toll gate in Lagos.

A report that has been widely shared on social media claimed that IIIJ, which did not exist until 24 hours ago, issued a press statement saying CNN report was “poor” hatchet job targeted at the Nigerian Army.

In an electronic statement signed by, Francois Deburoiche, its special rapporteur on Wednesday, the IIIJ said it came to this conclusion following a careful investigation on the events that led to the escalation of violence at the toll gate.

Checks by The ICIR however, showed that Francois Deburoiche is a pseudonym and the only reference to that name on the internet is in the press statement issued.

Also, the body that is supposedly international has no digital footprint on the internet- it has no website, nor any social media accounts such as Twitter and Facebook to identify them with.

Further checks by The ICIR revealed that an account associated with the ruling party in Nigeria, the All Progressive Congress (APC), on Twitter shared the report published by The Daily Sun newspaper from the press statement issued by the non-existing journalism institute, a report that was later deleted on the website of the newspaper due to lack of verification.

In a phone conversation with an official of Daily Sun newspaper who declined to be named, it was confirmed to The ICIR that the report was pulled down due to lack of verification of source of the press statement.

“We pulled the story down because there were no fact and the reporter will receive a query for the report,” Daily Sun disclosed to The ICIR.

The report that has been widely shared on both Facebook and Twitter was also published by some bloggers and media outlets online.

Tribune Online, a Nigerian newspaper also published the unverified report condemning CNN’s report on Lekki shootings and as at the time of filling this report, the story is no  more on the website.

Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media have also doubted the existence of the group that faulted CNN’s report.

A Facebook user identified as Abdul Jimoh, ” Tuale to the International Institute for Investigative Journalism for rubbishing the CNN in the eyes of the international community.”

Abdul in the post, demanded for IIIJ’s office and the investigative reports they’ve done in the past.

A Twitter user identified as Leon Ikechukwu said in response to APC Support tweet on the IIIJ press statement, “Used Google, Bing, and Duck Duck Go, and I never saw anything relating to an International Institute of Investigative Journalism. This is quite shameful, that you guys would have to resort to fiction to drive your agenda.”

From the reports gathered by The ICIR and checks online, we can say authoritatively that the International Institute for Investigative Journalism (IIIJ), does not exist and the press statement issued is fake.

Many Injured As Police, Fans Clash At Diego Maradona’s Wake

Riot police fired rubber bullets and tear gas in clashes Thursday with football fans near the wake for Argentine football legend Diego Maradona in Buenos Aires.

Officials earlier ordered Maradona’s coffin to be moved to another room inside the presidential palace after fans took over an inner courtyard and disrupted his lying in state.

The government had early announced a three-hour extension to the wake to allow time for thousands of fans to pay their respects.

Tens of thousands of people had queued from early morning to file past the star’s coffin, draped in the Argentine flag and the player’s No.10 jersey, at the presidential palace.

Many of the mourners were in tears, and some wore replicas of the World Cup winner’s jersey as they gathered at the Casa Rosada palace to see his coffin.

But as the day wore on, fans queueing outside the palace grew increasingly impatient and some took over a courtyard inside the palace, where they chanted slogans.

Officials moved Maradona’s coffin to another room as a security precaution, a government source told AFP.

At the same time, riot police clashed with stone-throwing fans on streets around the palace, and several people were arrested.

Maradona died of a heart attack on Wednesday while recovering from surgery earlier this month to remove a blood clot on his brain.

He was to be buried later Thursday at the Jardin de Paz cemetery on the outskirts of the Argentine capital, where his parents were also laid to rest, his spokesman Sebastian Sanchi told AFP.

Northern Nigeria Is The Worst Place To Be Alive – Sultan Of Sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, on Thursday lamented the high rate of insecurity in the North, saying it was the worst place in the country to live.

The Sultan, who stated this at the fourth quarterly meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council in Abuja, said bandits were fast overrunning the North as residents slept with their eyes open.

The meeting had as its theme, ‘Questioning for peace in the challenges of insecurity and COVID-19’

While describing the North as the worst place to live, he said that bandits had become daring.

He said they moved from house to house, village to village, market to market, with AK-47 rifles openly, purchasing foodstuffs and other items and even collecting change without any challenge from the security agencies.

The foremost traditional ruler stated that the security system in the North had completely collapsed.

He said, “Security situation in Northern Nigeria has assumed a worrisome situation. Few weeks ago, over 76 persons were killed in a community in Sokoto in a day. I was there with the governor to commiserate with the affected community.

“Unfortunately, you don’t hear these stories in the media because it’s in the North. We have accepted the fact that the North does not have strong media to report the atrocities of these bandits.

“People think North is safe but that assumption is not true. In fact, it’s the worst place to be in this country because bandits go around in the villages, households and markets with their AK 47 and nobody is challenging them.

“They stop at the market, buy things, pay and collect change, with their weapons openly displayed. These are facts, I know because I am at the centre of it.

“I am not only a traditional ruler, I am also a religious leader. So, I am in a better place to tell the story. I can speak for the North in this regard because I am fully aware of the security challenges there. We have to sincerely and seriously find solutions to the problem, otherwise, we will find ourselves soon, in a situation where we would lose sleep because of insecurity.”

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Ignatius Kaigama, outlined a code of conduct for both Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.

He said, “We Christians and Muslims must avoid imposing our religious views on others or denying them public amenities, jobs or influential positions because they don’t belong to our faith.

“Merit, not the vigour of our religious piety or affiliation should determine all we do or get in this country. We should not unjustly or corruptly deprive others of their rights, not to talk of wounding or killing anyone for economic or partisan political interests or because of blind religious zeal.

“It is preposterous that Nigerians clamouring for their rights and privileges from government would turn their anger on religious institutions by attacking Churches and Mosques, instigating Christians and Muslims to turn against one another or to destroy public amenities and infrastructure.

“We understand that the budget for national and state security is huge. Let us not deceive ourselves that the bigger the budget the more peace will flow. Weapons don’t bring peace.

What we need is a change of attitude, a conversion of heart; an objective appraisal of the religious or ethnic indoctrination we perhaps were subjected to in schools or at home. If we are only propelled by religious interests that exclude others we shall always remain in chaos and darkness.

The President, Christian Association of Nigeria and co-Chairman of NIREC, Dr Samson Ayokunle, while thanking God for saving the nation from the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to other countries, urged government to always tackle problem before it degenerated.

He asked the government to quickly reverse the recent decision to hike the price of electricity and fuel.

Ayokunle said, “That’s not what we send them to do for us. The decision, evidently, has added to our pains and they should reverse it as quickly as possible.

“The development that led to #EndSARS protest was quite unfortunate, and one of that development is police brutality which ought to be addressed before now.

“We have never witnessed such a mass action in Nigeria before. People were frustrated and because those in power didn’t respond appropriately until it degenerated to that level.

“But attributing the actions of the angry youths to a particular religion or ethnic group is insincere and unsafe. No religious group was exempted from the effect of the protest. The action was a spontaneous action that cannot be attributed to any religion or ethnic group.”

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, regretted that the nation was still faced with insecurity despite the government’s efforts.

“Today, despite all efforts including the deployment of enormous resources, our country still faces a measure of insecurity which is impacting negatively on our economy, social life, education of children and young persons, investment and remains a threat to lives and livelihood,” he said.

Donald Trump Gives Condition On Which He Will Leave White House For Joe Biden

President Donald Trump said Thursday for the first time that he would leave the White House if Joe Biden is officially confirmed the winner of the US election, even as he railed against the “rigged” vote.

Trump has made an unprecedented attempt to defy the results of the election by refusing to concede, spreading wild theories about stolen ballots and launching baseless legal challenges that have been thrown out by courts.

Answering his first questions from reporters since the November 3 vote, the president moved closer to accepting that he would serve only one term in office before Biden is inaugurated on January 20.

When asked if he would leave the White House if the Electoral College confirmed Biden’s victory, Trump said, “Certainly I will. And you know that.”

But “if they do, they made a mistake,” he said, adding, “It’s going to be a very hard thing to concede.”

“I think that there will be a lot of things happening between now and (January) 20th,” he said.

The Electoral College, which determines the White House winner, will meet on December 14 to certify Biden’s victory, with Biden receiving 306 votes to Trump’s 232.

“This election was a fraud,” Trump said, again without providing any evidence during his remarks to reporters at the White House after he spoke to military personnel via video-link on the Thanksgiving holiday.

He described the US voting infrastructure as “like a third-world country.”

Earlier in the day he tweeted that “this was a 100% RIGGED ELECTION,” while on Wednesday he called on his Republican supporters “to turn the election over.”

– No proof of fraud –

President-elect Biden has said that Americans “won’t stand” for attempts to derail the vote outcome, and urged for Americans to unite to fight the worsening pandemic.

More than 260,000 people have died in the US from Covid-19, with daily death tolls surging to 2,000 on recent days.

Trump’s refusal to concede the election to Biden has added to the countless norms he has torn up during his four years in power.

Supporters suggest he is already eyeing a run for president in 2024.

Trump, 74, is alleging — among other conspiracy theories — that voting machines deliberately deleted millions of his votes, though the government election security agency declared it “the most secure” election in US history.

Under pressure from some senior Republicans, Trump this week ended his blockade of government assistance to ease Biden’s preparation for assuming the presidency.

Trump said Thursday he would soon travel to Georgia to campaign ahead of two key runoff elections that will decide which party controls the Senate.

Biden, 78, this week introduced a slate of veteran diplomats and policy-makers who will make up his national security and foreign policy team, saying: “America is back, ready to lead the world.”

He said that in his first 100 days in office, he would tackle the Covid crisis, scrap Trump policies “damaging” the environment and push legislation offering millions of undocumented US residents a route to citizenship.
