Police Squad Kills Four, Wounded Gunmen Receiving Treatments In Rivers

A tactical team of the Nigerian Police has stormed the hideout of some of the fleeing wounded gunmen in Oyigbo Local Government Area, Rivers State, killing four of them and a female nurse.

The slain gunmen were reportedly being treated by the nurse identified simply as Chichi in a hidden area of Oyigbo when the squad surrounded the building and opened fire on them.

It was gathered that sensing danger one of them on drip attempted to escape by scaling the fence unknown to him that the area had been surrounded by armed policemen, who shot him dead.

The policemen subsequently gained access to the building and killed three others receiving treatments and the nurse, who was caught up in the gunfire, was also hit by a bullet.

The victims were said to be among the gunmen, who recently murdered seven policemen in surprised and coordinated attacks on security formations along the East-West Road and Elimgbu Police Station.

A security source, who spoke in confidence, said the bandits were trying to get medical treatments for multiple bullet wounds inflicted on them by the police when luck ran out on them.

He said: “Remember that recently gunmen, who disguised as security operatives killed seven policemen when they attacked their formations along the East-West Road and the Elimgbu Police Station.

“During that attack, the police at Elimgbu engaged them in a gun battle. They sustained many injuries and even abandoned their Hilux van. Those who were wounded ran to their hideout at Irebe side in Oyigbo and hired one Uchechi, a nurse to treat them.

“The police tracked them to the hideout. Three of them were already on drip. Sensing danger, one of the gunmen scaled the fence but was gunned down by the squad.

“The policemen eventually gained access to the building and met three others on drip. They made efforts to shoot at the police but the policemen gunned them and in the process the lady was hit by a bullet and she died.

“I can tell you that they are IPOB members. Five registration booklets of IPOB, many charms and some arms were recovered from them. You need to see their body, which was previously riddled by bullet. Though the bullets may not kill them because of their charms, the effects and the injuries will still show.”

Though all efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni and the Commissioner of Police, Emuebie Ebuka proved abortive, a senior police officer, who spoke in confidence, confirmed the report.

He said: “Five of the fleeing gunmen were traced to their location, where a nurse was treating them and they were all killed including the nurse. They are IPOB members not armed robbers.

“Items recovered from the scene including five IPOB registration booklets are still at the Oyigbo police station and they will soon be brought to our command headquarters in Port Harcourt.”

Okowa Hits Back At Lawan, Others Over Southern Governors Position

Delta state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa on Saturday hit back at the Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan and others for saying that Southern Governors are not supposed to speak on the issues of restructuring and the need for a national dialogue.

Okowa who spoke at an empowerment Programme sponsored by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rep. Ndudi Elumelu in Asaba said it was unfortunate that the Senate President was quoted as saying that Southern Governors should not have taken the position they took.

The Senate President was quoted to have criticised the southern governors for their position saying as elected people, they are not supposed to be seen to take such a position.

He said what the southern governors said was not new as such positions has variously been canvassed by Nigerians including the APC and PDP.

He said “unfortunately, I read in the paper somebody saying that we ought not to speak on certain things because we are elected people. If you cannot echo the voice of your people, then you are not worthy of the position you are holding.

“All those things that we said in our communique are not new. They have been spoken by our people and what we did was just echo their wishes.”

How I Killed Akwa Ibom Job Seeker, Iniubong Umoren — Frank Akpan Narrates

Police React To 'Death' Of Iniubong Umoren’s Alleged Killer

The suspected killer of a job seeker, Iniubong Umoren, Uduak Frank Akpan, has been at the Akwa Ibom State Police Command to dismiss the remote cause of her death in custody.

The suspect who was paraded alongside his father said he killed the girl in self-defence and not intentionally.

“I invited her for a job and I asked her whether she can work on a farm as a secretary. I told her that I wanted to sleep with her first. She agreed on a condition that I will use a condom which I also agreed to. She became furious when I started removing the condom, and she attacked me. I was bleeding so I needed to defend myself by hitting her which lead to her death,” he said.

The commissioner of police in the state, Andrew Amiengheme, said it was necessary to have the press conference because of the rumour that was going around in the media that the suspect had committed suicide in the cell.

“I don’t know anywhere in the world that a suspect will be allowed to use trousers in the cell to the extent of killing himself with it.

“Social media that is supposed to be a tool that will work to the advantage of the police has become something that is working against them,” he said.

THE SHOCKING TRUTH ABOUT DEPRESSION: Signs, Symptoms, And Solutions

BREAKING: Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0

Chelsea missed the opportunity to strengthen their place in the top four as Emile Smith Rowe’s second Premier League goal in as many games gave Arsenal victory.

The game’s only goal came in the first half courtesy of a terrible mistake by Jorginho.

The midfielder misjudged a pass back that was in danger of tricking over the line before Kepa Arrizabalaga managed to clawed the ball away but only to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who teed up Smith Rowe to slot in.

Chelsea dominated from then on as Mason Mount twice went close, seeing a volley inside the box blocked before the England international drew a good save out of Bernd Leno.

Christian Pulisic thought he had equalised on the hour but his strike was ruled out by the video assistant referee for offside, while substitute Olivier Giroud should have done better but swung wildly at his shot after a mistake by Mohamed Elneny.

The hosts then twice went agonisingly close to rescuing a point in stoppage time as Leno pushed Kurt Zouma’s header onto the bar before Giroud’s volley also bounced back off the woodwork, but Arsenal held on to take the three points.

Southern Senators Laud Governors, Back Ban On Open Grazing

Grazing

The decision of the 17 southern governors to ban open grazing in the region, has been lauded by senators from the states in the south region of the country.

The Southern Governors Forum (SGF) had in a communique after a four-hour meeting on Tuesday at Asaba, Delta State, resolved to ban the open grazing practice in the region.

In the 12-point communique read by the Chairman of the forum, governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, the governors called for restructuring of the country, decongestion of Lagos and and also touched on other relevant areas affecting the country.

In a press statement dated May 12th titled, Position of Southern House of Representatives Members on the Resolution of Southern Governors on Open Grazing, Devolution of Power, Others and jointly signed by Hon Ndudi Elumelu, Hon Peter Akpatason, Hon Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Hon Toby Okechukwu, Hon Adesegun Mujid Adekoya, Hon Dolapo Badaru, Hon Jimoh Ojugbele, Hon Femi Fakeye, Hon Segun Odebunmi, Hon. Mayowa Akinfolarin, Hon. Olufemi Bamisile, Hon. Oluwole Oke, Hon. Victor Nwaokolo, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, Hon. Essien Ekpeyong Ayi, Hon. Fred Agbedi, Hon. Francis Charles, Hon. Patrick Asadu, Hon. Lynda Ikpeazu, Hon. Sylvester Ogbaga, Hon. Nkem Abonta and Hon. Jerry Alagboso, on behalf of the Southern members in the House of Representatives – the senators hailed the governors for demanding for true federalism and restructuring, stating that the position of the governors will help to end kidnapping, killing and other vices in the region.

Replicated below is their joint press statement

The members of the House of Representatives from the 17 southern states of the federation, after due considerations, unanimously support the resolutions of the Southern Governors’ Forum on the demand for true federalism, restructuring as well as the worsening insecurity in the country, among others. This position is in firm restatement of our insistence that our nation must exists and governed on the platform of democratic tenets of social justice, equity, fairness, mutual respect, true federalism, rule of law and constitutional order, and we are ready to deploy all legislative instruments at our disposal for actualization.

Against this backdrop, the members of the House of Representatives from the South, without regard to any other affiliations, firmly support our governors on the immediate ban on open cattle grazing across the Southern Nigeria.

We hold that such is a sure step towards checking the infiltration of bandits, armed herders and terrorist elements which has heightened security challenges with escalated killings and bloody attacks on innocent citizens, while crippling social life, economic activities and food production in the region.

We therefore support the recommendation that the Federal Government should provide alternative and modern livestock management that does not constitute a security and economic challenge to the nation.

The platform of Southern members in the House of Representatives also support our governor’s restatement of the demand for true federalism through restructuring that will lead to the devolution of power, creation of state police, review of resource control and revenue allocation formula, as well as strict adherence to federal character principle in federal appointments in the shared interests of the federating states.

As lawmakers, we affirm that such is the only guaranteed way to ensure fairness, justice, equity to engender national stability, productivity and peaceful co-existence and we support an urgent national dialogue in that regard.

We caution certain individuals kicking against such devolution of power and review of revenue control and allocation formula, to desist from their vested parochial interest and note that such reviews are the only way to stabilize our nation engender regional or state productivity and healthy development at all levels.

Furthermore, our platform commends our governors for the concern for the asphyxiation of economic activities in the Southern Nigeria resulting from the continued congestion in ports in Lagos and the gridlock on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. This challenge has led to loses in billions of naira to businesses and other economic activities in the industrial and commercial activities of not only in the Southern Nigeria but the nation at large. We therefore firmly back the demand for the establishment and activation of other ports in other states of the federation, particularly in the south where such services are in very high demand.

As lawmaker, our platform assures of our readiness to deploy our legislative instruments to ensure speedy achievement of the reforms and constitutional amendments that will guarantee a restructuring towards the practice of true federalism in our country and we are rallying our colleagues from other parts of the country in this direction.
We urge all Nigerians to see the larger picture ensure that all hands are on the deck to move our nation to the right direction.

Our platform applauds our governors for their patriotism and courage while commending Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State for hosting his colleagues in their quest for solutions at this critical time in our nation history.

Buhari Is Sleeping On Duty, Nigerians Didn’t Vote For Garba Shehu — Catholic Bishop

The cleric made this claim while fielding questions from newsmen at the 2021 annual Archdiocesan Pastoral council meeting in Kaduna.

He said, “It is unfortunate where we have gotten ourselves in this country, to have a leader who is sleeping on duty. I think this is precisely what one can say we have a leader who is sleeping.

“For how many months now, every day there is killing and yet we don’t hear anything from the Commander-In-Chief. something is wrong.

“All the things happening in this country has indicated that we are living in a failed state. We need to hear from our President telling us the concrete steps that he is taking to end this insecurity, we don’t want to be hearing from the spokesperson, we did not vote for him; Nigerians didn’t elect the spokesperson.

“President, in civilised countries when two or three are killed, you see them appearing and giving people assurance that he is with them, but here in Nigeria, we have a leader who doesn’t talk who doesn’t care, who doesn’t show any sign of empathy to the people. It is discouraging.”

Ndagoso charged the Federal and the Kaduna State Government to secure the release of the victims still in their kidnapper’s den.

He added that a priest, Fr. John has been in captivity for over two years.

The cleric noted that the primary assignment of every government is to secure the lives and property of its citizens.

Police Say Rescue Mission Underway For Pastor Abducted In Southwest Nigeria

Abducted cleric in Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria, likely to be found before nightfall, according to the police.

Police have said they were on the trail of the abductors of  a pastor who was whisked away on Monday, May 10 from his church premises located at Irese town, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria.

Tee-Leo Ikoro, spokesperson of the Ondo State Police command, who confirmed  the abduction, told HumAngle about a rescue mission being underway in a telephone conversation on Tuesday.

“It is confirmed, Pastor Mayomi Ogedengbe was kidnapped last night in his church by a gang of hoodlums who entered the church premises in a black Toyota and whisked him away,” Ikoro informed HumAngle.

He added that Bolaji Salami,  the Ondo State Commissioner of  Police, had upon the abduction of the pastor, immediately ordered police officers and other tactical teams in the axis to go after the armed kidnappers.

“He also sought the assistance of vigilantes, civil defense, Amotekun, and even the military for his rescue. I do hope that he will be found before nightfall,” the spokesperson said.

Ogedengbe, a Deeper Life pastor, is formerly a director in the Ondo State Ministry Of Education.

The intent behind his kidnap is yet to be known as his abductors have neither contacted his family nor the state government.

The Southwest region, like other regions in Nigeria has in recent times seen an increase in crime rate.

Following the increase, the six governors of the Southwest states established Amotekun, a regional security outfit, saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the Southwest region.

The security outfit was launched in January 2020.

Since its establishment, the security outfit has made several arrests, aimed at eliminating crime in the region, including the arrest of one Iskilu Wakili, who was later remanded in a correctional facility for alleged kidnapping and murder.

But according to a Premium Times analysis in  March, the regional security outfit has not done much to curb the rate of abductions in the state, as kidnappings and killings are still rampant in the region.
