I’ve been dreaming of a baby, says Mercy Eke

The winner of the BBNaija season 5, Mercy Eke, has revealed her readiness to make babies.

The reality TV star was in a romantic relationship with Ike, her fellow BBNaija former housemate which many thought would metamorphose into something more permanent.

However, a couple of months after their exit from the reality TV show, their relationship packed up over lack of commitment.

Though she claimed to be married after her breakup with Ik, there has been no pictorial evidence or video of it.

In a more recent post shared on her Snapchat, Lambo expressed her readiness to bear babies, noting she’s ready.

She attributed the strong urge to repeated dreams of having a baby in recent times.
She wrote: “I want a baby like I have been dreaming of it. God, I’m ready.”

Mercy’s post was also accompanied by several emojis of pregnant women and babies.

Zambia’s first president, Kenneth Kaunda dies at 97

The founding president of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda is dead. He died from an undisclosed ailment at the age of 97.

He was on Monday admitted to Maina Soko military hospital in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, where he was treated for an undisclosed ailment.

Kaunda, one of Africa’s liberation heroes, was said to have made a steady recovery and was responding well to treatment as of Wednesday.

Zambian President Edgar Lungu had subsequently asked citizens to offer prayers for him.

“He stood up for this great nation at its most critical moment, and so we can all stand up for him in his moment of weakness,” Lungu had said.

Kenneth Kaunda, Zambian President, during press conference.

His death comes as the Southern African country is battling a surge in COVID-19 cases. The Zambia ministry of health had said bed occupancy rate at COVID-19 care centres had exceeded 100 percent and that health workers were overwhelmed.

There are rumours that he died of Covid-19 but his aide, Rodrick Ngolo denied the rumour saying, “He was being treated for pneumonia and not Covid,” AFP reports.

“The problem of pneumonia comes up regularly (in the ex-president) and every time you hear that he is in hospital, it is because of pneumonia,” said Ngolo, adding that the health of the ex-president had “improved” since Monday.

Nicknamed the “African Gandhi” for his non-violent activism, Kaunda led the former British protectorate Northern Rhodesia to bloodless independence in October 1964.

A socialist, he ruled the country for 27 years, largely under a one-party regime, whose mismanagement led to a severe economic and social crisis. After violent riots, he accepted free elections in 1991 and was defeated.

While in power, it hosted many movements fighting for independence or black equality in other countries in the region, including the African National Congress (ANC) party of South Africa.

Also known as “KK,” he was the leader of the main nationalist party, the center-left UNIP. He also became an AIDS activist when he publicly announced that one of his sons had died of the disease.

Sexual Assault: 7,000 Sign Petition Against Baba Ijesha's Release

The Lagos State Magistrate court has denied embattled Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, bail in the ongoing trial over alleged sexual assault.

Naija News reports that Baba Ijesha was arrested by the security operatives after he was alleged to have sexually molested a minor at 7 and 14.

He was later granted bail on May 17 after spending about 25 days in police detention by magistrates in charge of prison decongestion. But he has remained in police custody despite the bail.

During the trial on Wednesday, June 16, Kayode Olabiran, his counsel, prayed the court to acquit his client, citing his deteriorating health. He said the uncertain nature of the case has made it difficult to secure his release despite his bail as intending sureties were scared of the likely consequences.

But in his ruling, P. E Nwaka, the judge, held that the court can not grant the actor bail because the matter is beyond its jurisdiction. The judge also revealed that the case has already been filed before the high court.

Also speaking, Yetunde Cardoso, the superintendent of police in charge of the case, said the matter is now beyond the police.

Mr Olanrewaju was actually granted bail during the JUSUN strike and based on the conditions given, he couldn’t meet them and he was properly charged today (Wednesday).

Just like the court stated, the case has already been filed before the high court and the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) of Lagos State Ministry of Justice has taken over the matter from the police.

Also speaking, Yetunde Cardoso, the superintendent of police in charge of the case, said the matter is now beyond the police.

So presently, we have handed over to the DPP so the case is before them (DPP). It has nothing to do with the police anymore, it’s now left for the DPP to handle it,” she said.

Baba Ijesha is facing trial over charges bothering on rape, sexual assault and abuse of a minor. He was charged with indecent treatment of a child, defilement of a child, sexual assault by penetration, attempted sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault which contravenes Sections 135, 137, 261, 202, 262 and 263 of the Lagos State Criminal Law 2015.

He pleaded not guilty when the charges were read out to him.

The case has been adjourned to July 13 for mention.

Fulani Group Threatens Okowa, Orders Him To Remove Grazing Ban

Ifeanyi Okowa

There is palpable tension in Asaba, the Delta State capital, after residents discovered a threat letter giving Governor Ifeanyi Okowa a 72-hour ultimatum to withdraw his support for the ban on open grazing or risk the state capital being attacked.

The letter titled “Fulani Jihadist Warning: An Open Message Of 2 Paragraphs To Delta State” was said to have been posted in strategic locations in the state capital including at the fence of the Living Faith Church aka Winners Chapel at Infant Jesus Road in Asaba.

The letter is coming weeks after governors of the 17 southern states at its meeting in Asaba recently banned open grazing of cattle in the region.

The ban was rejected by the Federal Government and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, who claimed the decision of the governors violates the rights of herdsmen to free movement.

President Muhammadu Buhari also rejected the position of the governors and ordered for the restoration of the grazing routes across the country in an interview on Friday.

But in the unsigned letter, it particularly threatened that Fulani Jihadist fighters will attack Asaba and Governor Okowa’s hometown Agbor, if he fails to withdraw his support for the ban on open grazing in the state.

The letter reads, “This is to inform Delta state that the Fulani’s of Usman dan fodio leadership, shall do everything it can to uphold the legacy of our heritage of open grazing for we are nomadic people from origination and shall never negotiate the ownership of Nigeria and West Africa and Sub-Sahara.”

“We hereby demand the governor of Delta state to immediately withdraw his early stand for the call to barn open grazing in 17 regions in not less than 72hours from the above date and also, withdraw his position as the leading voice for the governors, as no occurrence we don’t have the first-hand information, even before the hosting of the South-south. South-east and South-south governors meeting in Asaba.”

“Failure to adhere to this demand for being the host of the 17 governors, Delta State, most likely the city of Asaba and Agbor, shall encounter severe consequences than that of Bornu, Kebbi, Kastina, Kaduna, Enugu, Benue, Oyo and many more that will not respect the Fulani’s heritage.”

“We take responsibility for the detonated explosive uncovered in the state secretariat, which should serve as warning to the Delta State government for what is to come, should the governor fail to abide by our demand.”

“We advise all Fulanis and northerners, including the security personnel, to leave Delta State as soon as possible for the wind of our action is now present in the land. For failure of the governor to adhere to our call, this shall leave us with no choice.”

June 12: Late MKO Abiola represented hope, liberty – Gani Adams

Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Abiodun Adams

Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Chief Gani Adams, has said that the late Chief MKO Abiola represented hope, liberty and freedom during his lifetime.

Adams stated this at the commemoration of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election by Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) on Saturday in Lagos.

According to him, Nigeria’s democracy is still not in tune with the ideals, which Abiola, winner of the election, lived and died for.

He said that the democratic ideals of the late business mogul enabled him to win the presidential election, even in the North where his main opponent, Alhaji Bashir Tofa, came from.

Adams, who decried what he called disunity, rivalry and senseless killings, said that these challenges had had adverse effect on the nation’s democracy.

He said: “This present danger has been threatening the fragile union of our great country.

“Today, the symbol of unity had passed on and what we have now in Nigeria is nothing but a fragile unity, where all the ethic nationalities that make up Nigeria live with mutual suspicion.

“The late MKO Abiola, in his lifetime, represented hope. Remember, his campaign slogan was ‘Hope 93,’ but the question remains: ‘Is there still any hope in Nigeria?

“It is because the politicians that are supposed to give hope to the hopeless Nigerians are fast dashing their hopes and eroding the very foundation of democracy.

“The late MKO Abiola also symbolised liberty and freedom for all.”

Adams said that the June 12 struggle had metamorphosed into struggles for true federalism and restructuring.

He called for true justice, fairness and equity to deepen the nation’s democracy.

Adams decried insecurity, poverty, unemployment, lack of electricity and good healthcare system as well as lack of good education.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that speakers at the event, including Prof. Derin Ologbenla of University of Lagos and Chief Linus Okoroji, voiced their concerns about the state of the nation.

They also called for justice, fairness and equity from the political class.

Ologbenla said: “We don’t want hegemony; we want fairness and equity where the poor are attain their full potentials.

“If there is no fairness and equity, there is no way the country can be united.”

Okoroji, who noted that the problem confronting Nigeria had to do with domination by the minority group, said that such would not work.

“Our problem in Nigeria is domination; that will not work. Let us live as God had created us. God did not create Nigeria, it was the Europeans who created and gave us the name, Nigeria.

“We were Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo before they came. And look at us, a country which God endowed with a lot of resources and yet, we are suffering. Let us be independent as God had created us,” he said. (NAN)

Wedding Guests Hit As NAF Bombs Bandits In Niger State

NAF Jets Bombard ISWAP’s Hideout, Scores Killed

An airstrike from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha jet over the weekend, targeted at bandits operating around Genu town in Niger State has reportedly hit some wedding guests in a nearby location.

The bombs from the NAF jet however also hit the targeted bandits who were attempting to flee with some rustled animals.

It was gathered that the fighter jet was scrambled from Katsina State based on credible information to intercept the bandits.

While the bombs hit the targeted bandits, one of the bombs allegedly fell on a wedding party in Argida village, killing two villagers while many wedding guests were also injured.

“Two villagers were killed unfortunately. We gathered that several others who were guests at the wedding feast, sustain injuries,” an eyewitness said.

However, the NAF Director of Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet told PRNigeria that he isn’t aware of any civilian casualty as a result of the airstrikes from the NAF jet, describing the operation as successful.

“We have no information on any civilian casualty. Our mission is against armed bandits in that Genu axis, after we got intelligence on bad elements planning to terrorize the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, on Saturday disclosed that some people have been recruited by Boko Haram with just N5,000.

Zulum stated this while delivering an address to mark 2021 democracy day and the second anniversary of his government.

The Borno State Governor noted that much has been achieved not only in the infrastructural development of the state but also in securing the lives of the people of Borno State.

June 12: Amotekun will metamorphose to State Police, says Akeredolu

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has said that the State Security Network codenamed Amotekun Corps would metamorphosed into a State Police.

Akeredolu who said he does not believe in secession stated that the many promises of June 12 have been dashed.

Akeredolu who spoke in Akure at the 2021 Democracy Day celebration said there was no serious attempt to redesign the security architecture to respond to the demands of a nascent country as at the time of independence.

He insisted that every federating unit in the country should have its own police for effective security.

The Ondo Governor declared that local government could not be absolute autonomous and that the Federal Government should have no control, whatsoever, on how a Local Government is run in a State of the Federation.

“Let every state determine the number of local governments it wishes to have for effective administration. The civil service must respond to the current realities for relevance. Let the extent of wealth creation form the basis of establishing local administrations. It does not make any economic sense to create as many local governments as the politics of revenue sharing will permit.

“Governors must be Chief Executive Officers answerable only to the people indeed. The law must empower them to harness the resources in their respective States for the benefit of those who voted for them. They must not be subjected to any external control as equal partners in a federation unless when it is absolutely necessary.

“They must be able to mobilise the people for socio-economic activities with minimal interference from the government at the centre. This will enhance their ability to protect their people from rampaging marauders and other criminals who wreck their peace in perpetuity.

“The message which produced June 12, 1993, was “Farewell to Poverty”. Our people looked forward to a better Nigeria where every citizen would be proud. The hope was dashed. We have been trying to rekindle the light of realistic expectations since 1999. The political journey proceeds in fits and starts. The ride has been bumpy, creating doubts and suspicion on the genuineness of intentions.

“The problems are, however, surmountable if all are sincere in finding lasting solutions to the existential issues confronting us. That should the lesson derivable from the June 12 annulment and the symbolic revalidation.”

Barr. Femi Aborisade who delivered the Democracy Day lecture insisted that Nigeria was not a broke nation.

Insecurity: Secure your states, Buhari tells Akeredolu, Makinde

                                     President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, subtly called out two south-west governors for incompetence over their handling of the farmers-herders clashes rocking the region.

Mr Buhari, who spoke during an interview with Arise TV, said he recently sent two South-west governors back to their states when they came to Aso Villa to complain about insecurity in their states.

The president was responding to a question on the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

“Two governors from the South-west came to tell me that the cattle rearers in some of the forests are killing farmers while their cattle are eating their crops,” Mr Buhari said.

“I told them you campaigned to be elected and you are elected. I told them go (to) back and sought out themselves.”

While the president did not mention the names of the governors, PREMIUM TIMES’ checks show that he was referring to Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State.

Multiple sources, who are close to the two governors, told PREMIUM TIMES that the response Mr Buhari gave during his interview was exactly what he told Messrs Makinde and Akeredolu in January when they visited him.

The visit

Following  the herdsmen crisis rocking the South-west region of Nigeria, the two governors, on January 27, 2021, met with Mr Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja.

Although Mr Akeredolu refused to make comments at the end of the meeting, his Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, in a statement issued to journalists in Akure, said his principal secured a presidential nod to evict criminal elements in Ondo.
