Akintoye dares police: No going back on Lagos rally

Professor Banji Akintoye

Leader of the Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), Emeritus Prof. Banji Akintoye on Friday said there is no going back on the planned Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos on Saturday.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu had on Thursday warned secessionists to stay away from Lagos as no protest would be allowed in the state.

But the 100 said the rally would go on as planned and that it would be peaceful.

The group claimed to have written to Odumosu and copied Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu  to ensure that hoodlums did not hijack the protest.

A statement issued by its General Secretary, George Akinola and its legal adviser, Olasupo Ojo urged the police to make sure the protest was not hijacked.

“Our rally scheduled to hold on Saturday will still hold without any fear or intimidation and we promise to be peaceful like we have always been.

“We have been peaceful, orderly and lawful at everywhere we have visited, therefore, we call on the Lagos State Police Command to ensure that the rally is not hijacked by hoodlums.

“We are happy that the Police already know that hoodlums are likely to hijack the rally. Now, we call on the police to ensure such does not happen like it didn’t happen in Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Oyo and Ogun States respectively where we’ve held our rallies,” the statement said.

According to IOO, It is the duty of the Police to safeguard “our peaceful demonstration and protect us. On our own part, we promise to cooperate with the police towards ensuring that the rally is peaceful and orderly.”

Raid of Sunday Igboho’s Residence By Operatives of the DSS

A prominent Ifa priest, Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon, has described as tragic, the raid by operatives of the Department of State Services on the Ibadan residence of Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.

The diviner also said Igboho didn’t abandon his associates who were in his Soka, Ibadan residence when the secret police raided the house early Thursday but rather, the activist ran away to fight another day.

Igboho, whom many believed have metaphysical powers, have been publicly seen putting on African bulletproof vests, some of which were recovered when the DSS raided his residence around 1am on Thursday.

Thirteen of Igboho’s guards and close associates were also arrested and paraded by the DSS while two of his followers were reportedly killed in a gun duel with the secret police. However, Igboho, who said in an interview on Thursday that he was in the house when the DSS came, escaped the raid.

Many have since wondered why Igboho didn’t help his associates to escape but speaking in an interview with BBC Yoruba on Friday monitored by newsmen, Elebuibon said Igboho didn’t abandon his aides but he ran to fight another day.

Responding to questions, the Ifa priest also faulted the Gestapo style in which the DSS raided Igboho’s house. He advised the DSS to learn from their counterparts in civilized nations who effect arrests in a peaceful and non-violent manner.

Elebuibon further stated, “It is not that his (Igboho’s) charms failed him, the whole raid was an attack, an invasion, a tragedy.

“He was not prepared for the attack, it happened all of sudden but he who fights and runs lives to fight another day. A warrior who fights and doesn’t know how to retreat will perish with the battle. He (Igboho) ran to fight another day, he didn’t abandon his followers because if he hadn’t escaped, it would have been a different thing entirely.”

Meanwhile, the secret police has declared Igboho wanted. The activist is being accused of stockpiling weapons to destabilize the country under the guise of agitation for Yoruba nation.

Breaking: No rally will be allowed in Lagos, police issue warning to Igboho, Akintoye

Odumosu briefing newsmen

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu on Thursday said no rally will be allowed, under whatever guise, in any part of Lagos State and warned Sunday Igboho and Banji Akintoye to stay away from the state.

Odumosu, at a news conference in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, said the command warned the organizers and their followers against staging the planned rally and stay clear of the streets of Lagos for the interest of the state and the general public as anyone caught participating or facilitating the rally would be dealt with within the ambit of the law.

“Lagos State cannot afford to experience any security lapses, breakdown of law and order and threat to public peace at the moment, considering the negative effects and reoccurring agonies of the October, 2020 violent #Endsars crisis that led to massive destruction of public and private facilities while some Police personnel paid the supreme price.

“This is in addition to many Police Stations, barracks, officers’ personal properties that were set ablaze during this period. The Command is still going through those harrowing experiences. The Command will not be cajoled by the so-called organizers that the rally will be peaceful. That was the same slogan adopted by the organizers of the #Endsars protest that was eventually snowballed into crises with attendant massive destruction of lives and properties.

“The Police will not submit to their antics. It would be recalled that on the 12th June, 2021 there was a rumored stay-at-home order purported to have been issued by a group which was immediately debunked by Lagos State Police Command.

“On this note, the Command still reaffirms that on no account will any actual or rumored activities including the said planned mega rally be allowed to lockdown the state or hinder normal daily activities of the good people of Lagos State,” Odumosu said.

According Odumosu, intelligent report available to the Police indicated that some disgruntled elements have perfected plans to infiltrate the ranks of the protesters and cause more mayhem and seize the opportunity to attack and loot properties of law abiding citizen of the state.

He added that information had gotten to the knowledge of the Command that the organizers’ foot-soldiers and mobilizers had concluded plans to embark on procession on the streets of Lagos as part of the programme for the mega rally.

The commissioner stated that the effect of this, if allowed to come to fruition is better known than imagined on the security, traffic and economic activities of a cosmopolitan state, like Lagos.

“It has also come to the knowledge of the command that the rally arranged to take place at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos, has been planned by some other yet-to-be identified groups to simultaneously take place in Lekki Toll Gate,Ikoyi, Iyana-Ipaja, Ikeja, Surulere, Ikorodu and other areas. This, if allowed could be a fatal ground to anarchy.

“Intelligence also reveals that one Elewe-omo, a transport Union Leader in Ibadan,Oyo State, has perfected plan to attack the organizers of the rally as a reappraisal attack to the death of one of his Followers allegedly killed by one Sunday Igboho’s group during a similar rally organized in Ibadan, Oyo State sometimes ago.

“The cumulative effect of all these is threat to law and order in the State. The Command will not fold its hands and allow disgruntled elements to truncate the peace being enjoyed in the state. The Command hereby appeals to the general public, especially Lagosians to shun the rally while parents and guardians are urged to discourage their children and wards from participating in the rally,” he said.

Odumosu called on the public and all law-abiding people of Lagos State to go about their normal daily activities as the Police Command and other security agencies had, as usual, put measures in place to provide adequate and water-tight security for all and sundry in the state.
