Benefits of maintaining weight loss

Benefits of maintaining weight loss

While losing weight is difficult for many people, it is even more challenging to keep the weight off. Most people who lose a large amount of weight have regained it 2 to 3 years later. One theory about regaining lost weight is that people who decrease the amount of calories they consume to lose weight experience a drop in the rate their bodies burn calories. This makes it increasingly difficult to lose weight over a period of months. A lower rate of burning calories may also make it easier to regain weight after a more normal diet is resumed. For these reasons, extremely low calorie diets and rapid weight loss are discouraged.Benefits of maintaining weight loss

Losing no more than 1/2 to 2 pounds per week is recommended. Incorporating long-term lifestyle changes are needed to increase the chance of successful long-term weight loss.

Weight loss to a healthy weight for a person’s height can promote health benefits. These include lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure, less stress on bones and joints, and less work for the heart. It is vital to maintain weight loss to obtain health benefits over a lifetime.

Keeping extra weight off takes effort and commitment, just as losing weight does. Weight loss goals are reached by a combination of changes in diet, eating habits, and exercise. In extreme circumstances, people turn to bariatric surgery.

Weight loss maintenance strategies

The strategies that encourage weight loss also play an important role in maintenance:

Support systems used effectively during weight loss can contribute to weight maintenance. According to the National Weight Control Registry, 55% of registry participants used some type of program to achieve their weight loss.

Physical activity plays a vital and essential role in maintaining weight loss. Studies show that even exercise that is not rigorous, such as walking and using stairs, has a positive effect. Activity that uses 1,500 to 2,000 calories per week is recommended for maintaining weight loss. Adults should try to get at least 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous level physical activity at least 3 to 4 times per week.

Diet and exercise are vital strategies for losing and maintaining weight. Ninety-four percent of the registrants in the National Weight Control Registry increased their physical activity.

Once the desired weight has been reached, the gradual addition of about 200 calories of healthy, low-fat food to daily intake may be attempted for one week to see if weight loss continues. If weight loss does continue, additional calories of healthy foods may be added to the daily diet until the right balance of calories to maintain the desired weight has been determined. It may take some time and record keeping to determine how adjusting food intake and exercise levels affect weight. A nutritionist can help with this.

Continuing to use behavioral strategies is necessary to maintaining weight. Be aware of eating as a response to stress. Also, use exercise, activity, or meditation to cope instead of eating.

A temporary return to old habits does not mean failure. Paying attention to dietary choices and exercise can help maintain weight loss. Identifying situations, such as negative moods and interpersonal difficulties, and using alternative methods of coping with such situations rather than eating can prevent returning to old habits.

Weight cycling

Weight cycling is losing and regaining weight multiple times. Some studies suggest that weight cycling, also called “yo-yo dieting,” may result in some health risks. These include high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, and high cholesterol. However, these studies are not true for everybody. The best strategy is to avoid weight cycling and to maintain healthy weight through a commitment to increased physical activity and healthy eating.

One myth about weight cycling is that a person who loses and regains weight will have more difficulty losing weight again and maintaining it compared to a person who has not gone through a weight-loss cycle. Most studies show that weight cycling does not affect the rate at which the body burns fuel. Also, a previous weight cycle does not influence the ability to lose weight again. In addition, weight cycling does not increase the amount of fat tissue or increase fat distribution around the stomach.

6 Signs Of Severe Dehydration And How To Treat Treat It

6 Signs Of Severe Dehydration And How To Treat Treat It

Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn’t have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. If you don’t replace lost fluids, you will get dehydrated.

Anyone may become dehydrated, but the condition is especially dangerous for young children and older adults.6 Signs Of Severe Dehydration And How To Treat Treat It

SYMPTOMS

Thirst isn’t always a reliable early indicator of the body’s need for water. Many people, particularly older adults, don’t feel thirsty until they’re already dehydrated. That’s why it’s important to increase water intake during hot weather or when you’re ill.

The signs and symptoms of dehydration also may differ by age.

INFANT OR YOUNG CHILD

Dry mouth and tongue

No tears when crying

No wet diapers for three hours

Sunken eyes, cheeks

Sunken soft spot on top of skull

Listlessness or irritability

ADULT

Extreme thirst

Less frequent urination

Dark-colored urine

Fatigue

Dizziness

Confusion

PREVENTION

1. Keep a Water Bottle Handy

Here’s a piece of advice that’s easy and efficient: Always try to keep a reusable bottle or cup of water with you throughout the day. If you’re one of those people who has trouble remembering to drink as much water as you should, having a bottle near you will help keep it at the top of your priorities list. Plus, refills are free.

2. Don’t Wait Until You’re Thirsty

Fatigue, headache, dizziness — all can be indicators that it’s time to rehydrate. But what about thirst? Interestingly enough, many maintain that by the time you actually feel thirsty, you’ve probably already lost a significant amount of water. For this reason, it’s important to drink small sips regularly throughout the day (chugging a full drink in one sitting isn’t required, it’s not like you’re at a college frat party after all).

3. Make Your Water More Interesting

Not much of a fan of plain water? Many recommend adding herbs and fresh fruit — citrus and berries are popular choices — to you water to boost the flavor intrigue. (We love this recipe for watermelon, mint, and cucumber water.) Some also claim that lemon water (made by mixing in the juice of a quarter a lemon) helps balance electrolytes and promotes the absorption of water into your cells. Or if you’re a big soda drinker, opt for sparkling water or club soda instead which at least offers a similar texture — just make sure it doesn’t have any added sugar or sodium.

4. Drink Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Juices

Believe it or not, water is not the only star of the hydration show — electrolytes, essential fatty acids, and minerals are also important when it comes to keeping you hydrated. So opt for fresh juices made from high-water content fruits and vegetables to supplement your body’s needs. Think watermelon, cucumber, tomatoes, strawberries, and the like. (Watching your weight? Try diluting the juice with water or club soda to help cut down on the sugar and calories.) And actually, you don’t just have to drink your juice — fresh fruit popsicles are a great (not to mention tasty) hydrating alternative.

5. Other Water Alternatives

Aside from fresh fruit and vegetable juices, drinks like coconut water and skim milk are also good hydrators. Some have claimed skim milk hydrates better than Gatorade, while coconut water is an isotonic liquid, and packed with a variety of good-for-you vitamins and minerals.

6. Minimize Your Caffeine and Alcohol Intake

This one’s a bit of a no-brainer but worth stating nonetheless. Both alcoholic beverages and caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea, and soda act as diuretics and can contribute to dehydration. You don’t have to give up your morning cup of coffee or nightly glass of wine, just be mindful to consume these types of beverages in moderation.

Imam, Congregation Stoned As Traditional Worshipers Invade Mosque

Imam, Congregation Stoned As Oro Worshipers Invade Mosque

Some Oro adherents, on Saturday, invaded a mosque in Idi-Iroko in the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State and pelted the Imam and the congregation with stones.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the Muslims incurred the wrath of the traditionalists by coming out during the Oro festival to observe their prayers.Imam, Congregation Stoned As Oro Worshipers Invade Mosque

The Wakeelul Muslimeen of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states, Sheikh Iskeel Lawal, said the incident happened during the observance of the afternoon (Suhr) prayer at the mosque.

While explaining the reason for the attack, Lawal said residents of the community had been warned by the Oro adherents not to go out during their festival on Saturday.

He said Muslims in the area first complied with the directive, but later came out to observe the afternoon prayer, which led to the attack on them by the Oro traditionalists inside the mosque.

Lawal stated, “The incident occurred around 1.18pm on Saturday when our Muslim brothers were observing the Suhr prayer at the Umar bin Khatab Mosque at Odan-Aje, behind the General Hospital, Idi-Iroko.

“The Oro adherents invaded the mosque and pelted the Imam and the congregation with stones, and chased them away. They later destroyed the property in the mosque.”

While warning against religious crisis in the state, the Islamic leader said, “We condemn the action of the Oro adherents and urge the government to intervene in the issue before it escalates.

“It is not in the 1999 Nigerian Constitution that no one, whether he is a Muslim or not, must not go out on a particular day or time because of the Oro festival.

“Everybody is free to practice what he wants; no one should impose his ideology on another person. The government must intervene before it becomes too late.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident.

He said the command had arrested some of the perpetrators.

When asked for the number of the suspects arrested, Oyeyemi promised to call our correspondent back, but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

18 People Dead As Military Plane Crashes Into Residential Area

Eighteen people were killed when a small military plane crashed into a residential area in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi early Tuesday, officials told AFP.

The plane crashed into a poor village near an upscale neighbourhood in the garrison city that is home to the army’s headquarters, creating a fireball that lit up the night sky and terrified residents.18 People Dead As Military Plane Crashes Into Residential Area

“We have taken 18 dead bodies to the hospital… that included 13 civilians and five crew members,” said local rescue spokesman Farooq Butt, adding that a further 12 people had been injured in the accident near the capital Islamabad.

“All the bodies are badly burned, so DNA tests are required for identification,” he added.

One resident told AFP that the crash happened around 2 am.

“I woke to the sound of a huge explosion. I stepped out of my house and saw huge flames and we rushed to the site,” said Mohammad Sadiq.

“People were screaming. We tried to help them but the flames were too high and the fire too intense,” he said, adding he believed seven members of one family were among the dead.

Another resident Ghulam Khan said he heard the plane as it buzzed over his house, adding the aircraft appeared to be on fire before it crashed.

“The sound was so scary,” he added.

The military’s information wing said the plane was on a routine training mission when the accident occurred, adding that rescue officials had extinguished the fire caused by the crash and moved the injured to a local hospital.

An AFP reporter at the scene said smoke was still rising from the wreckage and destroyed homes, while pieces of the plane were visible on a nearby roof.

Hours after the crash rescue workers could be seen combing through the smouldering site, gathering debris and inspecting the scene while ambulances swarmed the area.

Military officials had also cordoned off the crash site while a crowd of residents stood nearby, some of them sobbing.

Prime Minister Imran Khan offered his condolences to the affected families and wished a “quick recovery for the injured”, according to a tweet by the Pakistani government.

Pakistan has a chequered aviation safety record, with frequent plane and helicopter crashes over the years.

In 2016, a Pakistan International Airlines plane burst into flames after one of its two turboprop engines failed while travelling from remote northern Pakistan to Islamabad, killing more than 40 people.

The deadliest air disaster on Pakistani soil was in 2010 when an Airbus 321 operated by private airline Airblue and flying from Karachi crashed into the hills outside Islamabad while coming into land, killing all 152 onboard.

Supreme Court Dismisses Suit Challenging Ihedioha As Imo Governor

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a suit filed by Sen. Samuel Anyanwu challenging the emergence of Gov. Emeka Ihedioha as the Imo state governor.

Justice Jonn Okoro, in a lead judgment, held that the appellant failed to prove his case beyond a reasonable doubt.Supreme Court Dismisses Suit Challenging Ihedioha As Imo Governor

“The appellant has failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the allegations made against the 1st respondent, therefore the case is hereby dismissed and cost of N200,000 awarded in favour of the first and second respondents.

Anyanwu had approached the Court seeking to nullify the victory of Ihedioha.

He urged the courts to declare him the authentic winner of the primary election.

He accused Ihedioha of engaging in over-voting, thuggery, which he alleged, swayed the polls in favour of Ihedioha who is now the governor of the state.

Ihedioha had in the primary election on October 1, 2018, got 1,723 votes to defeat Anayanwu who got 1,282 to come second.

The court of Appeal in Owerri, Imo State had struck out the suit challenging the emergence of the Imo state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, as the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the state.

The suit which had earlier been struck out by the Owerri Federal High Court was filed by senator Samuel Anyanwu, who contested the primary election with Ihedioha.

In dismissing that suit, the jurist held that Anyanwu was unable to establish his allegations saying that the petitioner did not bring enough evidence to convince the court.

Miyetti Allah vigilantes spell more trouble for Southwest

Miyetti Allah vigilantes spell more trouble for Southwest

Sequel to reports that Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) members had been coopted into the security architecture of Ondo State, a lot of questions and anxiety now trail the development.
Many people, especially the Yoruba of the South West, have queried the propriety behind the inclusion of Fulani in the security system as volunteers when the indigenous Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) were not offered such opportunity.Miyetti Allah vigilantes spell more trouble for Southwest

Some members of the Fulani vigilante, who were with identity cards and with arms and ammunition, were identified around the North Senatorial District of the state, creating a lot of fear and misgivings among the people.

Fuelling more suspicion against the MACBAN and their expansionist tendencies is the strong evidence that their activities may well be beyond Ondo State, as the ID cards of the members read ‘Ondo State Chapter’, suggesting there are other state chapters.

Some have criticised Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for conscripting Fulani vigilantes in the state security system, but the man said he was not aware of the group’s full deployment and recognition with identity cards, even though there were initial talks on how to collaborate to secure the state.

Some have twisted the account of renowned lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, when he stated his observations and encounter with the so-called vigilantes on his way out of the state.

According to him: “It is quite true that I was in Akure, Ondo State from Friday, 19th July 2019 to Sunday, 22nd July, 2019 for my mother’s investiture as the Iya-Ijo (Chief Matron) of our home Church, Christ Anglican Church, Oke-Ifira-Akoko, Ondo State.”

“On my way back to Abuja on the 22nd day of July 2019 in the company of some security men, we saw two men at the highway around Akoko, Ondo State carrying dane guns.”

He disclosed that the men identified themselves as members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Vigilante group whose operation is known to all the security apparatuses in the area.

“Also, they willingly showed us their identity cards, which had their names and designations. Some other security men came to corroborate their claims,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State commissioner of Information and Orientation, Mr. Donald Ojogo, admitted that the Akeredolu-led government was in the know of the development, but distanced the state government from the ID card and other complexities involved.

According to him: “Various claims have been made as regards the activities, duties as well as the supposed mandate of these men in question. It is pertinent to recall that at the height of the incessant kidnap cases, the Ondo State government took some far-reaching drastic measures, including a marching order to the law-abiding Hausa/Fulani leadership in the area to fish out criminal elements among them.

“The Hausa/Fulani leadership was directed to select a handful of trusted men amongst them who could serve as tour guards in the thick forest as security agencies prepared to comb the forests.”

The commissioner, who said the measure yielded results, however, warned that; “while government appreciates the efforts of those who volunteered to provide information and serve as tour guards to the security agencies in the ongoing operations in the area, it will not tolerate any unauthorized move by any group to take an undue advantage of the current state of insecurity in the country.

“Government, having been unaware of any such identity card carrying persons in the name of a vigilante group, has directed security agencies to get to the root of the matter and apprehend any such person or group of persons operating in that manner.”

Whereas the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams had recently alleged a plot to implicate some Yoruba leaders and militia groups over insecurity in the region, he accused some top government functionaries of sponsoring the Fulani.

While paying a condolence visit to the Afenifere patriarch, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, whose daughter was killed recently, Adams said: “We have to be careful not to go into their own trap. We have to be careful. It is good you see me in circulation to walk with you.

“We don’t want a situation where we walk into their trap because we realise that this ugly incident is being coordinated beyond our own scene. There are some forces behind them.”

“How can ordinary Fulani be holding AK 47? In our findings, AK 47 rifle goes for about N1m and with many bullets. So, we are looking beyond ordinary Fulani herdsmen.”

Adams, who is a co-founder of the Yoruba militia group, OPC, however, lamented that the Yoruba are not proactive to resist any aggression rather they prefer to react despite warnings.

A retired Commissioner of Police, Barr. Samuel Adetuyi wondered where the Fulani vigilantes derived their authority if both government and the police are not aware of their deployment. “So, where did they derive their authority? My appeal is to the Federal and State governments to deal with the situation according to law.

“My worry is the complications that situations like this can engender. Supposing other organisations come out with their own vigilantes? This is a recipe for chaos. The consequences of inactions or wrong actions certainly may be grave and may hit at the basis of Nigeria’s unity.”

Appraising the situation from the point of view of a technocrat, he added that, “constitutionally, only the Police is saddled with the responsibility for the internal security of the country. But of course, other security agencies have joined the Police in this task.

“Their roles have the approval of the government. But to have vigilante in this manner has the potential to further worsen the already fragile security situation. I believe that the government must act very fast and disband them. A stitch in time saves nine.”

Adetuyi, who was at the 2014 National Conference to represent the Nigeria Police Commission said: “Government must be open and transparent in this matter. Considering the current security situation, anything that can easily be misinterpreted must be avoided. If there is a need for the vigilante, it must draw membership from the locals. But if others are required, then the Police department must manage and control them. No group should be allowed anywhere as vigilante without being registered and under the operational control of the Police to check abuses.”

The Southwest governors, none-the-less have iterated their commitment to deal ruthlessly with people perpetrating crimes in the geo-political zone, assuring that the security architecture would be beefed up in August to tackle crime.

The Chairman of southwest Governors’ Forum, Akeredolu, stressed this after an indoor meeting with his colleagues, last Monday.

Other governors were: Mr. Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dr. Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) and Engr. Seyi Makinde (Oyo). He hinged the envisaged improvement on the security summit held recently in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, adding that the technical committee of the summit had submitted their report for implementation.

“We have received the reports of the technical committee and the governors of all the states in Western Nigeria, we have now discussed the technical committee report and we are set to take immediate action on the very key areas recommended to the governors.

“From next month, our security architecture would have changed. From what we have now, that commission is going to do some work for us and thereafter we will all implement it to ensure there is a security of life and property in Western Nigeria. We are assuring our people that we are prepared, and we will deal ruthlessly with anybody who comes within our space to commit any criminal act. But the details of what we want to do cannot be discussed in the open.”
