Tammy Abraham’s decision to snub Nigeria for England has not gone down well with former England international and Wimbledon FC star, John Fashanu, who believes the 20-year-old made the wrong footballing decision.
The Chelsea academy graduate became a subject of tussle between the English FA and the Nigeria Football Federation after posting scintillating performances for the Blues in the ongoing league campaign.
But England manager, Gareth Southgate, moved ahead of Nigeria by including Abraham in his squad to face Bulgaria and Czech Republic for the Euro 2020 qualifier much to the disappointment of many Nigerians who had hoped that the in-form striker will commit his future to Nigeria.
And Fashanu, who also featured for the Three Lions has told the Chelsea striker to have a rethink so as to prevent history from repeating itself- citing his own case as an example.
“I’ve now been living in Nigeria for 14 years and I know that I made the wrong choice not playing for Nigeria.
“For him right now, everything looks like England is fantastic and wonderful. But it is only like I did, as he gets older he will realise that Nigeria is his motherland and as we have our problems in Nigeria, England also has its problems.
“What I want to tell Tammy Abraham is to make the right choice and play for his motherland which is Nigeria. He will have more time and make more appearances playing for Nigeria but the truth is he will make more money playing for England.
“It is now up to him (Tammy) to decide if he wants to play for Nigeria more than 50 times or if he wants to make $1m.
“But as a patriotic Nigeria I would have loved him to play for Nigeria. Don’t make the same mistakes that we elders made then.
“As an elder in the game, I can only offer advice. My advice to Tammy is to forget about money because money will come and go.
“Come back to your motherland and play for the country which I didn’t do. That’s my advice because now I know where I went wrong. I made a lot of money but I only played for England twice. I could have still made money with the Nigeria national team and made more appearances and helped the country to win many trophies and do wonderful things.
“Now I look back and see some of the mistakes I made and I don’t want him and other young Nigerians to make the same mistakes that I made.”
The Wimbledon legend though admitted that the final decision lies with the 21-year-old player.
“At the end of the day we must understand that his choice is his own choice.
Though, we can influence his choices but he is a young man and a wonderful player who is in the best year of his life and he knows what it’s like.

Uber Technologies Inc. is now offering its Uber Copter service in New York to all Uber riders, the company announced on Thursday. Previously, only members of Uber’s top two tiers, Platinum and Diamond, could use the service, which began on July 9.
Regular Uber users have a four-hour window, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., in which to book an Uber Copter during weekday rush hours. A one-way ride costs from $200 to $225 per person.
“The focus in the near term is to open this up to all riders, to demonstrate this vision of seamless connection between cars and helicopters,” says Eric Allison, head of Uber Elevate, the company’s flight business.
Through the app, customers are able to schedule a journey as far as five days in advance, until space is full. As with Uber car rides, prices will fluctuate, based on demand. Two helicopters will be used, for now, to make the trips.
The journey has three legs. First, an Uber car picks up riders and takes them to the Downtown Manhattan Heliport. For trips to JFK, Uber has limited pickups to locations below Houston Street, which the company says is designed to maximize customers’ time. “If you live on the Upper West Side, taking a trip to lower Manhattan and then a [helicopter] flight to JFK might not make much sense,” says Anil Nathan, Uber’s general manager of aviation. (The “only-below-Houston” rule does not apply if you’re flying from JFK to the heliport. After landing there, an Uber driver can take you to any destination, even if it’s above Houston Street.)
The flight itself takes about eight minutes, followed by an Uber car ride from the helipad near Terminal 8 at JFK to a passenger’s designated terminal. Trips can be booked via one request in the Uber app, instead of three separate ones, though customers will receive an emailed bill receipt for each leg.
Uber is using Bell 430 twin-engine helicopters operated by Newark-based company HeliFlite and has two pilots on every flight. There are six leather passenger seats for a maximum of eight people on board. They have Rolls-Royce 250-C40B turboshaft engines, are capable of speeds up to 161 mph, and cost about $6.2 million each.
The experience is not dissimilar from a normal plane ride, except much closer to the ground and near enough to recognize the buildings and neighborhoods you’re flying over. The three-step journey can take as little as 30 minutes, while the same trek by car from Manhattan can take an hour or more, depending on traffic. Public transportation generally takes from 50 to 75 minutes.

A federal high court in Abuja on Friday granted a N100 million bail to Omoyele Sowore, convener of #RevolutionNow Movement.
Sowore has been in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since August 3 when he was arrested in Lagos.
A court had earlier granted him bail but the secret police refused to release him while he was arraigned on September 30, alongside Olawale Bakare, his co-defendant, on a 7-count charge of felony brought against him by the federal government.
At the court on Friday, Ijeoma Ojukwu, the presiding judge, held that the prosecution failed to show good reasons why the defendants should not be granted bail since the offences are bailable.
The judge also granted a N50 million bail to Bakare. She restricted Sowore from speaking with journalists and travelling outside Abuja.
The judge ordered Sowore to produce two sureties in like sum, one who must deposit N50m to the court pending the determination of the case.
She said all sureties must be resident in Abuja, must show proof of tax clearance from 2016 to 2018 and must deposit original documents of landed properties in Abuja.
Earlier, while opposing the bail application, Hassan Liman, counsel to the federal government, urged the court to dismiss the request for bail, saying the defendants have demonstrated the likelihood of committing the same offences.
“The first defendant while being taken away from the court on Monday was seen chanting revolution, it is time for us to do it,” Liman said.
Juxtaposing Sowore’s case with that of the case of Asari Dokubo who was denied bail by the supreme court , Liman said offences threatening national security “such as this” should be handled with caution.
He also asked the court to take judicial notice of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the indigenous people of biafra (IPOB), who jumped bail.
Femi Falana, counsel to the defendants, prayed the court to allow bail on grounds that the defendants have never been found guilty of committing any offence before.
He said the use of the word “revolution” is not a criminal offense. Quoting the supreme court, he defined revolution as “the overthrow of one class by the other”.
Falana further pointed out that President Muhammadu Buhari also called for a revolution in 2003 and 2011 respectively after he lost the presidential election.
He argued that the first defendant(Sowore) has never called for a violent protest.
Addressing the second charge which bothered on insulting the president, the senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) said “under the current constitutional dispensation, no public officer in Nigeria is permitted to use the machinery of the state to settle scores with his opponent”
He said the constitution guarantees freedom of speech, which includes freedom to criticise and that government officials should be open to criticism.
Responding to the case of Dokubo raised by the opposition, Falana said Dokubo was not granted bail because he admitted to blowing pipes in the Niger Delta.
He assured the court that his clients would not cause any trouble if they are granted bail.
The case has been adjourned till November 6, 2019.
Misplaced priority by policymakers in Africa has just been further manifested in a disturbing video that has surfaced online showing helpless pupils endangering their lives just to become the future leaders.
Heartbreaking video shows pupils being ‘swallowed’ by flood as dilapidated classroom leaks during heavy rain
The video posted on Facebook page Taxi Times shows school children sitting in an overpopulated classroom although it was getting flooded as a result of the roof leaking so badly.
It appears from the video that the pupils had nowhere to run to for safety hence they chose to remain in the flooding classroom although they see the water rising.
It is not clear yet which part of Africa the footage was shot, but it is suspected that one of the teachers of the yet-to-be-identified school filmed the situation to get attention to their plight.
African leaders always allocate huge sums of the poor taxpayers’ money to do all kinds of populist projects and satisfy their parochial interests at the detriment of quality education.
Interestingly, they always enrol their children in very endowed private schools at the expense of the poor taxpayer.
Granted, things get a little crazy with politics in South Africa. But it seems our Nigerian brothers and sisters are taking things one step further. As President Buhari came to give a speech in Pretoria following last month’s xenophobic riots, he was met with an altogether different kind of confrontation at the Union Buildings.
Protesters had gathered outside of the iconic landmark to make their voices heard. But those within earshot might have had to do a double-take when they clocked what the demonstrations were about. The group were demanding that Buhari addresses them immediately – and, while he’s at it, volunteer for a DNA test.
No, this isn’t a very continental episode of Jerry Springer. And it’s nothing to do with baby-mama drama. That would all be too simple. Instead, the protesters who rocked up outside the Union Buildings firmly believe that Muhammadu Buhari is either a clone, or has been replaced by a man called Jubril from Sudan.
The government have been openly accused of being complicit in a conspiracy by Biafran activist Nwannekaenyi “Nnamdi” Kenny Okwu Kanu. Kanu is a leading member of the Indigenous People of Biafra, a separatist group that seeks political autonomy for the Igbo speaking people of Southern Nigeria.
However, with conspiracy theories aside, things did get seriously heated during Buhari’s address. The civil disruptors were dispered by stun grenades and rubber bullets. It has been reported that one of the Biafrans – a Nigerian national – was wounded in the leg and he’s currently receiving medical treament.
A Computer Science teacher at the Faith Academy, Ota, Ogun State, Voke Voma, has allegedly beaten a Senior Secondary School 2 pupil of the school, David Emekeme, to a pulp.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the teacher, who is also the school chaplain, allegedly beat David for walking slowly in the chapel.
It was gathered that David, who was beaten with a belt by the teacher, fell unconscious and was rushed to hospital, where he spent three days before he regained consciousness.
The victim’s sister, Love Onos, however, took to her Instagram page to lament David’s ordeal.
She said, “This is child abuse… a teacher at the Faith Academy flogged my brother then hit him in his chest; he collapsed and was rushed to hospital and was unconscious for three days. At this point, what my brother did or did not do is not valid; no man has the right to treat someone else’s child like that, not to talk of the fact that the child is placed under their custody with so much trust.
“On top of that, I called the principal and he lied to me that my brother was not in hospital and that he was fine, not until my parents got to Ota and found him in hospital. I am a mother of two and know the value of children, plus we have videos of pupils testifying to this teacher hitting and slapping them all the time; we chose not to put the video out to protect the interest of these kids. So, guys, please help me re-post, let’s get justice for David.”
When PUNCH Metro contacted Onos, she noted that her parents were unaware of the incident until David reached out to them when he regained consciousness.
She said, “The pupils were in the chapel for service when the chaplain told my brother to come and sit in front. My brother was walking to the front when the teacher took off his belt and started beating him and pushed him in the chest, claiming that David was walking too slowly.
“My brother fell and was unconscious for three days and the principal hid it from us until David regained consciousness and begged the school driver, who brought food for him, to use his phone to contact my parents. Other pupils also testified that that was how the teacher used to beat them. We want justice to prevail in this matter.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that the matter was reported at the Onipanu Police Station.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, told our correspondent that the parties involved had decided to resolve the issue between them.
He said, “It is a case of a teacher, who allegedly beat the pupil, and according to the teacher, he flogged the boy as a corrective measure, but unfortunately, the belt he used injured the boy in the head.
“The Chief Security Officer of Winners’ Chapel brought the teacher to the police station when the father of the boy complained at the station and the DPO sent for the CSO to produce the teacher, but the CSO, the father of the boy and the teacher met to resolve the issue between them.
“Notwithstanding, investigation is still ongoing; the police are only waiting for the outcome of the discussion among the parties involved and the outcome will determine the next step the police will take.”
When PUNCH Metro contacted the Principal, Faith Academy, Olumuyiwa Shopitan, he declined to comment on the incident.
“We will get back to you because I am not authorised to speak to the press, but those who have the authority will speak to you,” he simply said.
