Nigeria’s AG, Malami, Petitions IGP Adamu To Arrest Sowore

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has written to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to arrest SaharaReporters Publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over the newspaper’s reports exposing his corruption-fuelled lifestyle.

Malami in the letter written by his lawyer, Sunday I. Ameh (SAN), alleged that Sowore falsely levelled allegations against him, making him look like a criminal in the eyes of the public.

The letter reads, “Mr Omoyele Sowore is the Publisher of an online media outfit known as Sahara Reporters Inc., based in New York, USA, but broadcasts news and other information on the Internet via the Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and other similar social media platforms where same could be viewed and assessed by the whole world and further shared and/or disseminated virally without restraint.

“On the 10th, 11th and 12th of July 2020, Sowore/Sahara Reporters, in what appears like a coordinated attack, viciously inter alia wrote and maliciously published, in sum, the libellous publications contained direct allegations and inuendos.

Abubakar Malami

“Notwithstanding that the stories are untrue and false; Mr Sowore/Sahara Reporters published the defamatory articles in issue mala fide, with the intention to ridicule him before the whole world.

“Malami said since the 10th of July 2020 when the alleged malicious criminal libel was first published, received and still receives several telephone calls and visits from well-meaning Nigerians, his friends, well-wishers and associates from all over the world including those he has dealt with/still dealing with in his official capacity as Nigeria’s Chief Law Officer, many of whom have expressed serious concerns as to his alleged conducts as reported by SaharaReporters.

“Sir, in the premise of the foregoing and given that the publication of malicious libel and criminal defamation published against our client by Mr. Sowore/Sahara Reporters was with a view to disparage him in the eyes of right thinking persons, contrary to Nigerian Criminal and Penal Laws and a gross violation of our client’s right to dignity of human person as guaranteed under the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended), we hereby humbly appeal that you use your good offices to investigate the criminal acts perpetrated by Mr. Sowore/Sahara Reporters as implicated in this petition so that the law can take its course against anyone found culpable. Our client deserves justice!

“Similarly, the Attorney-General of the Federation has written and served the publishers of Sahara Reporters. The letter was titled: RE: PUBLICATIONS OF MALICIOUS LIBEL AND CRIMINAL DEFAMATION AGAINST MR. ABUBAKAR MALAMI, SAN BY SAHARA REPORTERS INC.

“In the premise of the foregoing and given that the publication of malicious libel and criminal defamation published against our client by Sahara Reporters was with a view to disparage him in the eyes of right thinking persons, contrary to Nigerian Criminal and Penal Laws and a gross violation of our client’s right to dignity of human person as guaranteed under the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended), take notice that you are hereby issued a seven-day ultimatum to retract all the libelous and criminally defamatory publications, and cause to be issued a public apology to be published on your platform and on the front page of three newspapers with nationwide circulation for three consecutive days failing which we shall be left with no other option than to allow the law to take its course against your organization.”

In a series of text and photo stories in recent days, SaharaReporters had exposed how Malami, who was a little known lawyer before being appointed into the government of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, had maintained an opulent lifestyle fuelled by public funds despite displaying a saintly posture before the public.

Why Ozekhome Wants Magu Dead!

However, Nigerians deserve to know that Chief Ozekhome lacks the moral right to condemn any person accused of corruption because he himself is corruption personified. In 1995, the Sani Abacha regime set up several probe panels to investigate corruption in many areas of our national life.

In spite of the serious allegations of corruption leveled against the suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, he is presumed innocent until the contrary is proved by the federal government. Hence, decent citizens have insisted that the investigation of Mr. Magu must follow due process. But as far as Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN is concerned, Mr. Magu is already guilty as charged. Contrary to Chief Ozekhome’s condemnation and conviction of Mr. Magu, the authorities have listened to wise counsel by releasing him from unlawful custody.

However, Nigerians deserve to know that Chief Ozekhome lacks the moral right to condemn any person accused of corruption because he himself is corruption personified. In 1995, the Sani Abacha regime set up several probe panels to investigate corruption in many areas of our national life.

The Kayode Eso panel on corruption in the judiciary and the Pius Okigbo panel on mismanagement of the Central Bank of Nigeria performed the national assignment with patriotism and honesty. Chief Ozekhome served in the 7-man panel of inquiry instituted to probe, restructure and reorganize the Nigerian Customs. But the panel was disbanded due to allegations that the members had engaged in high level corruption.

Under the current civilian administration Chief Ozekhome has been involved in serious electoral malpractice. For instance, during the 2007 general election he was arrested with other armed thugs while snatching ballot boxes in Edo State. The senior lawyer was paraded by the police to the embarrassment of the Nigerian Bar Association.

The arrest was widely reported by the print and electronic media. In a report titled “Nigeria’s worst election” saharareporters gave the names of the election riggers in each state of the federation. In particular, Saharareporters edition of April 14, 2007  stated as follows: “EDO: massive voter fraud perpetrated by Chief Anthony Anenih-4 people killed in Ekpoma by PDP hired cultists. Adams Oshiomole of AC is rigged out. Akoko Edo, ex- human rights lawyer, Mike Ozekhome arrested with ballot boxes for PDP still detained.”

Since Chief Ozekhome was caught and arrested while rigging for the PDP, the Edo State Police Command was ordered to release him from detention by the ruling PDP at the Centre. The party also ensured other armed thugs and cultists arrested were not prosecuted. Out of sheer hypocrisy, the ex-election rigger has been commenting on the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission to hold credible elections.

Another reason why Chief Ozekhome SAN wants Magu dead is that he was indicted for collecting N75 million from Mr. Ayo Fayose as legal fees which turned out to be from the proceed of the crime of money laundering. The efcc invited him for interrogation and arraignment. It was at that stage that he ran to the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo SAN for protection. The Vice President rightly advised the EFCC to await the outcome of the appeal which had been filed in the case so that the Buhari administration would not be accused of disrespecting the  Court of Appeal. Even though the appeal has not been decided by the Court of Appeal, Chief Ozekhome SAN has now twisted the story to say that he reported allegations of corruption against Mr. Magu to the Vice President!!!

Since Chief Ozekhome SAN claims that he had submitted evidence of corrupt practices committed by Mr. Magu, we challenge him to send a petition to the Justice Ayo Salami that is currently investigating allegations of corruption against the suspended EFCC boss. Alternatively, Chief Ozekhome SAN should submit his petition to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Offences Commission (ICPC). If Mr. Magu is indicted he should be prosecuted. Since Chief Ozekhome SAN committed serious electoral offences and money laundering, and no statute of limitation against criminal offenses, he should be charged to court as nobody is above the law. Before then the garrulous fellow should stop insulting the Nigerian people.

Nigeria Gives Schools Guidelines For Reopening

Chkwuemeka Nwajiuba, minister of state for education: schools asked to comply with guidelines for reopening

The Nigerian Government has directed school owners in the country to meet specific guidelines by 29 July, towards the reopening of schools, at a date to be announced later.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, gave the directive in a statement signed by Mr Ben Goong, the Director Information in the ministry, on Friday in Abuja.

Nwajiuba said the ministry, having consulted widely with the Federal Ministry of Health, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Education in Emergencies Working Group, had developed and circulated guidelines for the reopening of schools.

According to him, school owners are to prepare and comply with the guidelines.

He said schools were to undertake self-assessment and send feedback to states ministries of education, not later than July 29.

He added that consultations with relevant stakeholders would be held to review the situation and decide on a specific date for reopening or otherwise.

The Minister also said that having taken the painful, but necessary decision not to reopen schools without preparations to ensure the safety of students and teachers, the ministry had continued consultations with stakeholders, and a mechanism to assess and monitor compliance would be put in place.

“Since Tuesday last week, we have consulted widely with stakeholders in the sector, including commissioners of education in all the states of the federation and the Association of Private School Owners of Nigeria (APSON).

“Others are the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools,(NAPPS), Provosts of colleges of education, rectors of polytechnics, vice chancellors of universities, some state governors, and development partners.

Commenting on WAEC, which has already released a timetable for examinations, Nwajiuba said: “We met with WAEC on Monday, and have agreed to further consult with four other countries on a new examination date.

“We appreciate the concern shown by all stakeholders and noted the divergent views expressed on the matter.”

He assured Parents that the safety of students and teachers was paramount and that the ministry was working assiduously towards the speedy reopening of schools for the exit classes to sit for their examinations.

Lampard Confirms Kante Will Miss FA Cup Semi-Final

France and Chelsea midfielder, N’goloKante

N’Golo Kante has been ruled out of Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday.

Kante suffered a hamstring injury in the 3-0 Premier League win over Watford a fortnight ago and Frank Lampard revealed the midfielder is not ready to return at Wembley.

Blues boss Lampard said a few other players will be monitored ahead of the clash with in-form United He said on Friday: “N’Golo Kante won’t be fit for the match, he’s still not right, so he’s out.

“Other than that, we have a few people with little niggles, which I’ll monitor over the next 24 hours or so and then we’ll be ready to go.”

Lampard is well aware of the threat posed by a United side who are unbeaten in 19 games and one of the London club’s rivals for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

“We know they are playing well; they’ve got a very potent front three, the most potent front three probably in the country in terms of numbers,” said Lampard.

“Obviously [Bruno] Fernandes has made a huge difference, so you see the strength they have brought to their team with individual quality. We have to be confident in ourselves, deal with their threats and worry about ourselves.”

Lampard has challenged his players to grasp their opportunity to win a trophy in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

“Considering where we are, we’re in the semi-final, we know what’s in front of us. The league is obviously huge but at this point you fight on two fronts and we have to give everything to try and do that,” said the former England midfielder.

“A club like Chelsea will always want to win these kinds of trophies, it’s what we’ve done very well in the modern era.

“Of course, it feels like a slightly different position this year because of the circumstances of the season, but we have an opportunity and it’s up to the players and ourselves to make the best of it on Sunday.

“We’re playing a good team, they are in good form and whoever would await us in the final will be a good team, so the work is to be done.”

Death Of Tolulope Arotile: Neither Freak Nor Accidental, She Was Murdered

Death Of Tolulope Arotile: Neither Freak Nor Accidental, She Was Murdered

Tolulope Arotile, Nigeria’s first-ever female combat helicopter pilot, was killed Tuesday. According to Nigerian Air Force spokesman, Ibikunle Daramola, the 24-year old Arotile died as a result of head injuries sustained from a road traffic accident at NAF Base in Kaduna State. She was hit by the reversing vehicle of an excited former Air Force secondary school classmate while trying to greet her.

This Nigeria!

Can any truth come out of this jagajaga country? I am not a physician. I am not a forensic pathologist. I am not a police officer. But consider:

A friend was reversing her vehicle to greet Arotile. Boom! The friend ran over her and killed her on the spot with injuries to the head. What’s the name of the friend? What was the speed of the reversing vehicle? How could the friend reverse without using the rear view mirrors? How did the friend run over Arotile without knowing? How could Arotile not seeing the coming vehicle? Who witnessed the “accident”? What did police report say about the “accident”? The whole thing was odd. The whole thing was out of character. We need answers to these questions.

Nigerians believe Arotile was not killed by any freak accident. We suspect a foul play. She was murdered by an assassin sponsored by Fulani terrorists. Lately, the Fulanis have engaged in frenzy, systematic, and systemic killing of Yorubas. This is a grand design by the Fulanis to wipe Yorubas off the map of Nigeria. The murder of young, talented and gifted Arotile by Fulanis is yet another means to snuff out our best and the brightest.

We believe the Fulani terrorists murdered Arotile in order to end abruptly her promising upward mobility career with the NAF. More importantly, she was taken out for her audacity to conduct successful combat missions against Boko Harams.

The NAF attributed Arotile’s death to a freak accident to cover up the heinous murder. NAF believes that by saying she died of freak accident, that is, an accident which is unpredictable and unpreventable, it will not ignite any great public outcry. Baba nla mistake! Also, by linking Arotile’s death to freak accident caused by a friend’s inattentiveness or stupidity, there will be no need for investigation. There’s nothing freakish or accidental in Arotile’s death.

Nobody is buying the cock and bull story of the NAF. We hold the Chief of Air Staff Sadique Abubakar responsible for the murder of Arotile. We demand immediate and full independent inquiry into her death. We request for prompt autopsy. Both the report of the independent inquiry and the autopsy be made public as soon as they are ready without any hanky-panky.

Her parents have suffered the greatest tragedy. Our prayers and thoughts are with them.

Tolulope, good night and rest in peace.

UPDATED: Police Arrest Ex-PA Of Fahim Saleh For His Gruesome Murder

UPDATED: Police Arrest Ex-PA Of Fahim Saleh For His Gruesome Murder

The personal assistant of a young tech entrepreneur who was found decapitated and dismembered in his Manhattan apartment this week was arrested early on Friday and is expected to be charged in the grisly killing, according to two officials briefed on the matter.

The entrepreneur, Fahim Saleh, 33, was discovered dead on Tuesday afternoon by his sister inside his $2.25 million condo in a luxury building on the Lower East Side, the police said. She had gone to check in on him after not hearing from him for about a day.

She found a gruesome scene: Mr. Saleh’s head and limbs had been removed, and parts of his body had been placed in large plastic bags. An electric saw was still plugged in nearby.

The personal assistant, Tyrese Devon Haspil, 21, was expected to be charged in a criminal complaint with second-degree murder and other crimes.

Detectives believe that the motive for the killing stemmed from Mr. Saleh’s having discovered that the assistant had stolen tens of thousands of dollars from him, despite the fact that Mr. Saleh had not reported the man and had set up what amounted to a repayment plan for him to return the money, one of the officials said.

The police were expected to announce the arrest at a news conference on Friday.

Investigators have also concluded that Mr. Saleh was killed on Monday, the day before his body was found, and that the killer used his employer’s credit card to pay for a car to a Home Depot, on West 23rd Street in Manhattan, to buy cleaning supplies to sanitize the crime scene, the official said. The killer returned to Mr. Saleh’s apartment the next day to dismember the body and clean up.

Detectives believe that the killer, dressed in a black three-piece suit, wearing a black mask and carrying a duffel bag, followed Mr. Saleh off an elevator in his building and into his apartment, a law enforcement official said. He used a Taser to immobilize Mr. Saleh and then stabbed him to death.

Security video taken from inside the elevator shows the killer later using a battery-operated portable vacuum cleaner in an apparent effort to remove any traces of his presence, the official said.

New York City’s medical examiner announced on Thursday that Mr. Saleh had died from multiple stab wounds to his neck and torso. Initially, a law enforcement official had described the killing as a “hit” and said it looked “like a professional job.”

Detectives investigating the murder believe the killer’s work dismembering the body was interrupted when Mr. Saleh’s sister buzzed from the building’s lobby, another official said, prompting him to flee through the apartment’s back door and into a stairwell before the sister arrived.

Mr. Saleh’s family said in a statement on Wednesday that the gruesome killing was so shocking it was unfathomable.

“Fahim is more than what you are reading,” the family said. “He is so much more. His brilliant and innovative mind took everyone who was a part of his world on a journey and he made sure never to leave anyone behind.”

After graduating from Bentley University in Waltham, Mass., in 2009, he built an app called PrankDial that allowed users to send prerecorded prank calls. Mr. Saleh said he eventually built PrankDial into a $10 million business.

Mr. Saleh went on to found Pathao, a motorcycle ride-sharing start-up in Bangladesh. He left that company in 2018 to begin a similar venture in Nigeria, an app known as Gokada.

At the time of his death, Mr. Saleh was the chief executive of Gokada and oversaw a shift in its business during a turbulent time. In February, Nigerian officials began enforcing a ban on motorcycle taxis in major commercial and residential parts of the country’s largest city, Lagos.

Gokada was forced to halt its ride-hailing business and laid workers off, but Mr. Saleh pivoted the company to focus on food and parcel delivery and business logistics.

“Fahim’s passion for Nigeria and its youth was immeasurable,” Gokada said in a statement. “He believed young Nigerians were extremely bright and talented individuals who would flourish if just given the right opportunity.”

Mr. Saleh was also the founding partner in a Manhattan-based venture capital fund, Adventure Capital, that invested in similar transit start-ups in Colombia and Bangladesh.

Student Has Been In Police Custody For 54 Days Over GEJ Parody Twitter Account

Student Has Been In Police Custody For 54 Days Over GEJ Parody Twitter Account

A student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, has spent nearly two months in police custody for allegedly setting up a Twitter parody account of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

A parody account is a type of profile on social media that is named after popular persons and used mainly for comic purposes. Twitter rules allow for parody accounts on the condition that the operator of the account indicates this on his profile page.

On his Twitter profile page, Olusola informed his 46, 400 followers that the account was a parody one.

His profile read in part, “BrezzisLife, not GEJ.

According to several tweets, the student, Babatunde Olusola, reportedly set up an account on Twitter using Jonathan’s profile photo with the name Goodluck E. Jonathan but with the handle, ‘@jayythedope’.

Through the handle, Olusola reportedly fired many witty comments including some subtle jabs at Jonathan’s wife, Patience.

However, the student was said to have been arrested on May 23, 2020.

@djsheylex tweeted on Wednesday, “Twitter influencer @jayythedope has been in detention at the Force Crime Investigation Department over a tweet he made weeks ago regarding the ex-President’s wife. He’s been in detention for 53 days and he clearly stated it was parody.”

Speaking with The PUNCH on Friday, a human rights lawyer, Tope Akinyode, said the student was arrested after a complaint by the former President to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

Policemen were said to have obtained information of Olusola’s call log record from a telecommunications service provider.

The call history linked him to his uncle, a pastor in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, who was immediately placed under house arrest by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives and was ordered to invite Olusola to his residence for onward arrest, which was done.

Akinyode said Olusola was subsequently taken to Abuja.

He said, “I was informed that it was one of the aides to former President Jonathan that saw the parody account on Twitter and informed his boss. Jonathan immediately reported to the IG and that was how investigations began.

“Olusola was subsequently arrested at Ogbomoso and brought down to Abuja.”

The student was subsequently charged for impersonation and contravening the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act of 2015.

His bail was fixed at N500,000 while a civil servant of not less than level 15 is expected to stand as his surety.

“Olusola has no parents and has not been able to meet the bail conditions hence his continued detention. However, we believe he will be out soon,” Akinyode said.

The lawyer, however, said Section 22(3)(c) of the Cybercrime Act places the burden on Jonathan to show that Olusola had used the Twitter account to defraud members of the public or defame his character.

There have been calls for Olusola’s release on social media in the last three days with the #Freeshola trending at number one on Twitter on Tuesday.

The Spokesman for Jonathan, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, had yet to respond to a text message two days after The PUNCH sent an inquiry.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, did not respond to calls.

Jonathan is currently on an ECOWAS assignment in Mali where he is leading peace talks.
