WhatsApp Rolls Out Feature That Allows You Use The Same Number On Different Accounts

WhatsApp Rolls Out Feature That Allows You Use The Same Number On Different Accounts

WhatsApp has managed to reach a worldwide audience and break through 2 billion monthly users despite a severe handicap: The app doesn’t support multiple devices for the same account. One phone number equals one phone or one tablet, that’s always been the equation. And while there are workarounds to allow two different numbers on the same phone (for dual-SIM devices or Business users), there hasn’t been any trick to make the same number available on two phones or tablets simultaneously. The great news is that WhatsApp is already working on this.

WABetaInfo first discovered signs of multi-device support in WhatsApp in November 2019 on iOS and Android. At the time, a “Registration Notification” hinted at asking for a new security code from a secondary phone, and a hidden warning text in chats suggested the ability to have multiple devices per recipient.

Then in WhatsApp beta v 2.20.110 (APK Mirror), WABetaInfo discovered more clues related to multiple device support. The team managed to trigger different event messages when a persons’s E2E security code changes, both of which show multiple device support is coming. However, it’s still unclear how this will work. Would the first device remain the main one and need to be online for the others to work, like WhatsApp Web does now? Or would the devices be independent and you could use any, regardless of whether the main phone is powered on or connected? We hope it’s the latter.

And now, with a more recent beta v 2.20.196..8 (APK Mirror), WABetaInfo has unearthed a few more signs of the feature which will likely be found under “Linked devices” in the app’s overflow menu. This replaces the “WhatsApp Web” option that’s currently there.

When opened, you’ll see all the devices where you’ve logged in with that same WhatsApp account. Curiously, though, the screen only mentions “browser, computer or Facebook portal.” Maybe the wording will be updated later to include other phones.

I’m also concerned about the limit to four devices, especially if this means that web or desktop instances will be counted among them. I currently have WhatsApp installed on a phone and I use the web interface from two computers (work and home). That means I’m already up to three total devices and I’ll only be able to link one other phone or tablet. As far as I know, there’s no limit to how many web or desktop instances you can currently link, so the limit will be a backward move.

While the feature is clearly still in development and can’t be manually enabled, it’s surely intriguing. It’d be so nice to finally be able to have the app installed on two phones or a phone and a tablet simultaneously. Messaging applications always relied on accounts, not phone numbers, and thus had no issue with multi-device support. It wasn’t until WhatsApp launched that most of us discovered an easier way to join a messaging platform through phone numbers, but realized it came at the price of convenience. Other messengers like Telegram already figured out a way around this limitation, and it’s high time WhatsApp did so too.

Up to four devices

According to the latest discovery, WhatsApp’s multi-device support will be limited to four devices. It’s not clear if you can deauthorize some to add more, but seems like the concomitant number of devices connected to the same number is four.

Breaking News: Akpabio Names Senators, House Members He Gave NDDC Contracts (FULL LIST)

The list containing names of Senators and House of Representatives members involved in the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, contracts has surfaced.Breaking News: Akpabio Names Senators, House Members He Gave NDDC Contracts (FULL LIST)

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio submitted the names to the National Assembly committees probing the activities of the commission last Thursday.

The list was part of a letter the Minister sent to the National Assembly and also copied the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

However, following the alleged failure of the lawmakers to read that part of the letter, the National Youth Council of Nigeria presented the document to the media in Abuja on Sunday.

In Akpabio’s letter, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi was involved in 53 projects, while Senator Nicholas Mutu’s name appeared on 74 projects.

Also named in the list are Senator Mathew Urhoghide (six), James Manager (six), Sam Anyanwu (19) and others simply identified as Ondo and Edo Reps.

Akpabio addressed the letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who had threatened to drag him before the court if he fails to name the lawmakers that had benefited from NDDC contracts..

The letter read in part: “I refer to the resolution of the House passed on the 21st July 2020 and forwarded to me on the same day Ref. NASS/HR/LEG/3/36/VOL.ll/O8 directing me to respond to the contents therein within 48.”

In the letter, the Minister explained that the Committee on NDDC did not allow him to provide detailed explanation of his claim that most contracts in the commission were being awarded yearly since 2001 to members of the National Assembly in both Chambers.

He said, however, that the two Chairmen of the Committees in both Chambers had adequate knowledge of the contracts.

“I never referred to members of the 9th National Assembly as beneficiaries of NDDC contracts as NDDC is yet to fully implement any NDDC budget since the commencement of the 9th National Assembly. In fact. the 2019 budget passed in February and harmonised between the 4th and 5th of March 2020 was received by the Commission in the middle of April, 2020, when same was designated to expire on the 31st of May, 2020,” Akpabio continued.

“However, it is pertinent to point out that the Clerk of the National Assembly forwarded a letter Ref. NASS/CNA/115/VOL.38/1175, dated 20th March, 2020, without attaching the budget details indicating that the 2020 budget of the NDDC passed into Law was being forwarded (copy of the letter is attached as Annexure ‘A’). This anomaly was brought to the attention of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee investigating a purported financial recklessness by the management of the commission in July 2020, though the first outcry was on allegation of missing N40bn which was totally untrue;

“It has always been known that the two chairmen of the committees on NDDC in both chambers yearly exhibit unusual influence to the exclusion of committee members and even the management of the NDDC in appropriating funds to details embellished in the budget after passage of line items at the plenaries. In the 2019 budget, the Executive Director Projects forwarded to me the attached list of 19 Nos. old contracts amounting to almost N9bn after tax, that the House of Representatives Committee Chairman on NDDC, Honourable Tunji-Ojo, insisted the IMC of NDDC must pay before 2019 budget details could be released to the commission (see Annexure ‘A1’),” he said.

Recall that, angered by Akpabio’s bold claim, members of the House had demanded that the Minister named the involved lawmakers within 48 hours

Within the time frame, the Minister sent a letter to the Committee which was read as a retraction to his previous claims.

In the letter Senator Akpabio was said to have denied accusing members of the National Assembly of collecting 60 percent of the contracts in NDDC

The letter was read on the floor of the House of Representatives during the Plenary by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.

I Started A Fashion Business From Two Suitcases

The BBC’s weekly The Boss series profiles different business leaders from around the world. This week we speak to Rwandan fashion designer Joselyne Umutoniwase.

In 2010, Joselyne Umutoniwase took a bold decision. She had been working as a film editor for five years but decided to follow her dream of becoming a fashion designer.

She made her first fashion collection and when she travelled from her home in Rwanda to Germany for a film scholarship, she took two suitcases stuffed with tops, skirts and dresses.

“The young Germans were fascinated about the style and the colourful African wax prints,” she says.

She sold the whole collection in three months.

“I didn’t know that I could earn serious money with selling my own creations,” she says from her business in Kigali.

Her German experience gave her enough confidence and a bit of financial help to make a career change.

She stopped working as a film editor, bought three sewing machines, hired two tailors and founded her own fashion brand, Rwanda Clothing.

Now, eight years later, she runs a workshop with 37 full-time tailors, selling off-the-peg items from $50-$120 (£40-£95).

Clothes captivated Joselyne, as she grew up in a middle-class family in Rwanda’s capital.

She bought cheap second-hand items nobody wanted, she says. “I separated all the parts to find out where the seams were and how these clothes were made.”

But with many items coming into Rwanda from China and India, she didn’t see it as a career, and instead studied film and, to keep her parents happy, IT.

Both her father and her uncle own several businesses. This inspired her to start a small hair-braiding outfit during high school.

But their experiences also showed her how things could go wrong. “I became very frustrated as a child, when my father had to close his butchery business because his business partner ran away with all the money.”

“Fashion was an industry that nobody took seriously at that time,” she says, and from the banks’ point of view, “me as a 24-year-old woman being the founder wasn’t very convincing either.”

However, she had met lawyer and investor Roman Schulz during her 2010 visit to Germany. He was excited by her creative work and natural talent as a designer, believed in her and later became her business partner and husband.

They put $10,000 of savings together and she hired her first staff.

She does admit to making a few errors. For instance, her first two fashion shows.

“This was good and important but I didn’t necessarily need 25 models, a stage, free drinks and to invite a VIP. I could have done this in a more clever and cheaper way,” she says.

“Joselyne always has an entrepreneurial aptitude and ambition above and beyond,” says Alice Nkulikiyinka, country director of Business Professionals Network Rwanda.

“Her company has grown steadily, offering secure jobs to more than 40 people. Joselyne established an internationally recognised fashion brand.”

In 2018, one of Joselyne’s biggest dreams came true when she was invited to the Milan Fashion Week.

“It was a victory to be there,” she says. “It felt like such a recognition for my work to present my collection on that catwalk.”

She says she would love to start selling internationally through an online shop but logistics make this a challenge.

“I wouldn’t be able to afford customers sending items back,” she says, which is hard to avoid in fashion.

She now plans to start an internet shop in Europe for homeware items and fashion accessories like scarves, pillows and bags. But she’s mindful not to forget her early clients.

“When you grow too quickly and disappoint existing customers, you can ruin your business.”

But her plans have been put on hold due to the coronavirus crisis.

“We were forced to shut down during a total lockdown of 45 days. And although the government has eased the lockdown recently, customers are still shying away.”

Her tailors are working in shifts to maintain distance, she says.

“In Rwanda, we are used to challenges. It forces us to be extra creative, learn to find other solutions and come up with new ideas.”

Joselyne and her family had to flee by foot during the Rwandan genocide in 1994 and she lost both her grandmothers, several uncles, aunts and cousins.

“I only have some blurry memories as I was only six years old and I might also have filtered some experiences as it was such a traumatic event,” she says.

“In the following years, I remember being so obsessed about the story, [thinking] ‘why has this had to happen to my country?'”

Expansion plans have been put on hold due to the coronavirus crisis.

Early on, she wanted to leave Rwanda entirely.

“It was too painful to know that such a thing could happen in my country. And I was afraid that it would happen again. You don’t feel safe for a while and you don’t trust anybody.

“But at some point, you decide to have peace with it. Whatever you do, you cannot really change this situation.

“I also saw new roads being constructed, new houses being built. I saw the country being repaired. And the positive thing is, after such a tragedy, people really want to live.”

Internet Blackout After Somalia Prime Minister Removed

Hassan Ali Khaire in 2017

An almost unanimous vote of no-confidence on Saturday that saw Somalia’s prime minister removed from his post has been condemned inside and outside the country.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the move against Hassan Ali Khaire showed “serious disrespect for the constitutional foundations” of Somalia, while the internal security minister called it a “dark day”.

Internet access has been cut across much of the country according to NetBlocks, which monitors internet freedom.

“The ongoing incident has high impact consistent with an intentional blackout and is not attributed to any international issue,” the group said.

The vote to remove Mr Khaire, which was backed by 170 out of 178 MPs, follows a power struggle between him and President Mohamed Abdullahi “Farmajo” Mohamed over the timing of the next presidential election.

The removed prime minister has said the vote must be held in February 2021 as scheduled, but the president has insisted that it should only go ahead if it’s held on a one-person, one-vote basis.

Currently in Somalia clans select MPs who in turn select the president, so correspondents say such a change would be impossible within the given time frame because it would require vast resources and mass voter registration.

Until a new prime minister is appointed, Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled has been asked by the president to act as caretaker.

Obasanjo’s Silence In Midst Of Corruption In Buhari’s Govt Worrisome – Fayose

Fayose and Obasanjo

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has questioned the silence of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo in the midst of high level insecurity and corruption in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He wondered why Obasanjo was curiously silent unlike before when he would have blown hot.

Fayose, in tweets, accused Obasanjo of teaming up with others to foist Buhari on Nigeria on the basis of alleged corruption and insecurity.

According him, It is either Baba is tired, timid, afraid or he is no longer the Obasanjo that they used to know.

“With the level of corruption and insecurity that we are seeing in Nigeria under this APC govt, former President Obasanjo is curiously silent.

“And it was because of alleged corruption and insecurity that Obasanjo teamed up with others to foist Buhari on Nigeria,” he tweeted.

Fayose then mocked Obasanjo by asking: “Isn’t Obasanjo’s silence worrisome? It is either Baba is tired, timid, afraid or he is no longer the Obasanjo that we used to know.

“Will he keep silent while the entire country is being looted away and Nigerians anywhere in the country can’t sleep with their two eyes closed?”

The graduation ceremony of the ex-insurgents took place on Saturday at Malam Sidi community in Kwami Local Government Area of the state.

Maj.-Gen. Bamidele Shafa, the Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor (OSC), said the ex-insurgents were ready to be re-integrated into the society.

Shafa said that the graduating batch four clients were admitted in December 2019 and within the six months undertook a comprehensive medical test to ascertain their health status that enabled their proper care.

According to him, out of the 606 clients received into the camp; 601 were graduating, three died, one was withdrawn from the programme while the last one was transferred to the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Maiduguri.

He explained that the three that died had terminal illnesses they already had before coming to camp, while the one withdrawn was on disciplinary grounds for further investigation.

The OSC coordinator also said that the clients graduating for re-integration into the society comprised 587 Nigerians and 14 foreign nationals from Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republic.

He added that the clients had appeared before a quasi-judicial panel, which according to him was a major requirement, before their reintegration into the society.

He stated that the essence of the panel was for the clients to denounce membership of Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province, confess their past misdeeds and take an oath of allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He said that the huge number of clients who willingly surrendered to the Federal Government’s programme was a good sign of peace for the country.

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin, said the DRR programme was a working strategy complementing the efforts of the Federal Government toward restoring peace in the Northeast.

Umar-Farouq represented by her Head of Special Services, Hajia Nadia Mohammed, said that the Federal Government’s commitment to peace led to the establishment of the Northeast Development Commission.

” The commission was established to expedite the rehabilitation and the development of the Northeast,” she said.

Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno lauded the Federal Government’s efforts in the de-radicalisation of ex-insurgents to make them better members of the society.

” Those refusing to surrender, I want to assure you that their days are numbered as the armed forces will soon get them,” he said.

On behalf of the clients, Babagana Mai-Ramri appreciated the Federal Government and the Borno State Government for efforts towards making ex-insurgents useful to the society.

While promising to be good ambassadors of the country, Mai-Ramri appealed to those still fighting in the bush to denounce their membership of the terrorist group and embrace peace.

Dogara Decamps To APC Again, Meets Buhari

Immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara has returned to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

In line with this, he met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja on Friday.

Dogara was led to the president’s office by the Chairman of APC Caretaker/National Convention Planning Committee and Governor of Yobe state, Mai Mala Buni, who apprised Buhari of the latest developments in the ruling party.

The former speaker did not speak when requested to by State House correspondents, but Buni confirmed that he has become a member of the APC.

Recall that, along with former Senate President Bukola Saraki, Dogara left the APC for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in January 2019.

Mala said Dogara’s return is part of the rebuilding process of the ruling party, which only recently, overcame its leadership crisis with the sacking of the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC).

Asked why he was in the State House, the Yobe Governor said he came to brief the president on the latest developments in the party.

“We paid a courtesy call on the President in continuation of our effort to rebuild the party. We are here to see Mr President and brief him on the developments,” he said.

When told that it would be surpassing to some that he came with the former Speaker, he said: “They shouldn’t be surprised because the former Speaker is a member of the APC and he is because the reason he left the APC is no more there.”

Asked whether Dogara had returned to the party, Buni affirmed:

“Yeah, he’s back,” noting that President Buhari has welcomed him back to the APC fold.

“He (Buhari) welcomed him. He’s happy with the development. That’s what he’s looking for. We are rebuilding the party and these are the steps we are taking towards rebuilding the party.”

The party caretaker boss assured that efforts are on to get all aggrieved former members of the APC to return as long as they are willing to do so, noting that they will get fair treatment.

Dogara added: “Well, we are meeting all our aggrieved members particularly (those) who have an interest in coming back to the party. They should feel free to do so. We are assuring them and there is no crime in double assurance.”

While noting that the crises in the party will soon be a thing of the past, he added: “We will do justice to all our members and that’s what will bring peace and that is what will guarantee peaceful coexistence, that is what will bring the consolidation of the party, the rebuilding of the party. Without doing justice, you cannot achieve that and we are sure of doing justice to all our members.”

When asked whether Dogara’s return is part of the 2023 strategy of the APC, Buni resounded: “Well, of course, not only 2023 strategy, this party, we are rebuilding the party to outlive all of us. It’s not only about specific time or period, its not about election, it’s not about electioneering. It is about building a party.”

Dogara announced during plenary on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, that he had left the APC under which he was elected to the House of Representatives and became the Speaker.

He has explained that his defection was due to pressures from constituents who have lost confidence in APC.

I, Yakubu Dogara, hereby announce my defection from the APC to the PDP. In my own case, I would say I took the decision because of the wishes of my constituents who bought PDP nomination forms for me on 12 September 2018,” he said at the time.

Harry and Meghan sue paparazzi to protect son’s right to privacy

Harry and Meghan sue paparazzi to protect son's right to privacy
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, leave after attending the Endeavour Fund Awards in London

(Reuters) – Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, filed a lawsuit in California on Thursday against unnamed paparazzi photographers for allegedly taking “illegal” photographs of their son, Archie.

The lawsuit, filed in Superior Court of the State of California, County of Los Angeles, cited “serial intrusions” of privacy of the couple’s 14-month old child, and came as a measure to protect him from the “manufactured feeding frenzy.”

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are filing this lawsuit to protect their young son’s right to privacy in their home without intrusion by photographers, and to uncover and stop those who seek to profit from these illegal actions,” the attorney for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a statement.

The lawsuit also alleged that drones and helicopters entered the privacy of the airspace above the couple’s residence.

The couple seeks “no special treatment” and is only seeking the right to be left alone in the privacy of their home as guaranteed under the laws of California, the lawsuit stated.

In June, Meghan sought a court order to stop the publisher of a UK tabloid from disclosing the names of friends who could be witnesses in an ongoing legal dispute citing their right to privacy.

The family is now living in Los Angeles after the couple stepped down from their royal roles at the end of March to forge new careers. They moved out of the UK after growing hostility to the media’s intense coverage of their private life.

In April, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told Britain’s biggest tabloids, including The Sun, and Daily Mail, that there would be “zero engagement” with them in future because of their false and invasive coverage.
