Amotekun Is Here To Stay – Akeredolu Declares During Colourful Inauguration

Amotekun Is Here To Stay - Akeredolu Declares During Colourful Inauguration

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Tuesday August 11, inaugurated the Ondo State Security Network Agency code-named Operation Amotekun.

The ceremony was conducted months after the bill setting up the security outfit was passed into law by the state House of Assembly and signed into law by the him (Governor).Amotekun Is Here To Stay - Akeredolu Declares During Colourful Inauguration

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Governor Akeredolu averred that with a workable synergy among the leadership of the security agencies and that of Amotekun, a water-tight strategy capable of arresting crimes even before they occur would be deployed.

Akeredolu who reassured people of the state that the forthcoming election in the state would be very peaceful in the ceremony in which no fewer than 192 recruited members of the corps were inaugurated, stated that community policing became necessary to curb all forms of insecurity in the state.Amotekun Is Here To Stay - Akeredolu Declares During Colourful Inauguration

He said;

“It was so horrible that marauders laid siege to the highways as well as in the farmlands waiting to kidnap or devour anyone in sight. With the launch of the Amotekun, we resolved that it shall be no retreat, no surrender. We are not going to be intimidated or blackmailed.

”It is incontrovertible that the existing security framework is being overstretched and we had to devise a means of confronting the challenge of insecurity head-on. That was when the concept of Amotekun came up. As Yorubas, we are not known to surrender to our adversaries and if our forebears did not, we should not.

“On 4th March, this year, just two months after the launch of Amotekun in Ibadan, the Bill setting up the Corps was signed into law, after diligent and thorough work by the State House of Assembly. The import of this is that the Amotekun Corps is now a legal entity, not just the idea of an individual.Amotekun Is Here To Stay - Akeredolu Declares During Colourful Inauguration

“I am saying it again, that my ambition is not worth the insecurities that our people are confronted with, where at some point, people were afraid of travelling out of the state.”

Student Arrested For Creating Parody Account For GEJ Breaks Silence On His Ordeal In Detention

Student Arrested For Creating Parody Account For GEJ Breaks Silence On His Ordeal In Detention

Olusola Babatunde, a final year student of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso, says he was detained by the police for 82 days and nearly contracted COVID-19 at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Garki, Abuja for creating a parody account of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Babatunde said this during an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday shortly after he was released.

The student, who has no parents, said he and scores of suspects were cramped up in small cells in contravention of the COVID-19 guidelines.

He said a Chinese miner, who was detained in another cell, fell ill and tested positive for COVID-19 and this put the lives of all the other suspects at risk.

Babatunde said, “There was no social distancing in detention. I guess the people in the cells are exceptional. It is like COVID-19 doesn’t infect them and this is despite the fact that new suspects are brought in every day without testing.

“However, we had an incident just once. There was a Chinese man who was a gold miner who fell ill. He was taken to a hospital and tested positive for COVID-19 so he was hurriedly released.

“He was in the Force Intelligence Bureau department so only the suspects in that cell were tested. We were all at risk of getting infected with COVID-19.”

The student said while in custody, he was never tortured and was fed twice a day like every other suspect.

He, however, said he wore the same clothes for 82 days and was only allowed to wash his clothes every four days.

“It wasn’t easy. I spent 82 days in detention and I was transferred to three different cells. I wore the same clothes for 82 days,” Babatunde said.

The student said he felt betrayed that former President Jonathan could order his arrest because he was one of his biggest supporters.

He said a few days before his arrest, he tweeted that Jonathan’s administration was better than that of his successor, Muhammadu Buhari.

Babatunde said, “The funny thing is that I even tweeted good things about Goodluck Jonathan a few weeks before my arrest. I said Jonathan’s administration was better than that of the current President. So, I was shocked but this is Nigeria.”

When asked if he was still a fan of Jonathan, Babatunde responded laughingly, “May God help us.”

Narrating how he was arrested, the student said his uncle called him and asked him to see him urgently and that policemen wanted to see him.

The student said on getting to his uncle’s house, the police arrested him and did not reveal to him the reason for his arrest.

“It was when I got to the station that I was asked what I did to offend Goodluck Jonathan,” Babatunde said.

“I spent over a month in police custody before I was arraigned,” he added.

The student said he created the parody account with the best of intentions and never defrauded anyone or impersonated the former President.

“I set it up just to make the timeline fun. I have my own personal Twitter account but I just wanted to ‘catch cruise’. It was my personal Twitter account that I converted. It was the same handle @jayythedope but I changed my picture and profile name to that of Jonathan.

“I left my cover picture as @Jayythedope. All my information and personal email address were included in my bio. It was not an attempt to impersonate the former President. I also stated clearly that I was not GEJ. It was just a parody account. I didn’t expect things to blow up the way they did,” he explained.

Also speaking with The PUNCH, the student’s lawyer, Tope Akinyode, said Jonathan had already written through his lawyers to withdraw his complaint of impersonation.

“We just got the bail process completed. In addition, the President has written through his people to the court to withdraw the case. The withdrawal will come up on the next adjourned date,” Akinyode said.

BREAKING NEWS: DSS Invites Dr Obadaih Mailafia Over Viral Video On Boko Haram

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, has said that the Department of State Services has invited him to its Jos office ostensibly to expatiate on certain weighty statements and allegations he made during an interview on a Lagos-based radio program, Morning Crossfire, on Nigeria Info Fm. He was speaking on the crisis in Southern Kaduna in Kaduna State.

Mailafia confirmed the development to a Punch newspaper correspondent in Jos on Tuesday.

He said, “Yes, it true. The DSS invited me to appear in their Jos office tomorrow (Wednesday) by noon.”

In the said interview, Mailafia, a presidential candidate on the platform of the African Development Congress in the 2019 general elections, had among many other grave allegations, claimed that some repentant Boko Haram commanders had told him that a serving governor in northern Nigeria is a Boko Haram commander.

Some of the other allegations Dr. Mailafia made on the radio show included; planes brought supplies (arms, ammunition, funds) to the terror group during the period of COVID-19 lockdown despite government’s ban on flights, Boko Haram plans to cause a civil war in Nigeria in 2020, and others.

Husband Of Blue Eyed Woman Abandoned In Kwara Tells His Part Of The Story

Husband Of Blue Eyed Woman Abandoned In Kwara Tells His Part Of The Story

Abdulwasiu Omo-Dada, the husband of Risikat Azeez, who was allegedly driven out of her matrimonial home on account of her blue eyes, has given reasons for separating from his wife.

In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, Abdulwasiu denied dumping the 30-year-old mother and their two daughters because of the colour of their eyes.

Contrary to Risikat’s claim, Abdulwasiu said he was attracted to Risikat because of her blue eyes.

He alleged that his former wife was malcontent, adding that he catered for the family with the little he had.

Risikat had said, “I heard that my husband said he left me because I was a malcontent woman and not because of my eyes.

“The fact of the matter is, he left because of my eyes. His family members told him that they didn’t like our eyes and he started behaving the way he did; he stopped sleeping at home, and we had no food, nothing.”

Reacting, Abdulwasiu said, “It was because of her eyes that I fell in love with her and married her. Without much ado, our relationship progressed and it was a good one. We would even wear outfits made of the same fabrics. We have children.

“For her to now turn around and tarnish my name everywhere… well, I accept it as the will of God. I couldn’t have left her because of her eyes because I loved her as my wife.

“All the image-tarnishing stories she had been telling about me, I have been tolerating them. I didn’t quarrel with her, I didn’t beat her; in fact, I never used to make things hard for her.

“Sometimes, she would cook, and when I asked if she made mine, she would say no and I wouldn’t make an issue of it.

“Instead, I would ride my bike to get bread; but if I attempt to take stew from the pot, she would collect the plate from me. I’m not lying against her, if I had wanted to, I wouldn’t be sharing all these details.”

On the allegation that he was pushed by his family to dump his wife, Abdulwasiu added, “My parents never asked me to dump her because of her eyes. She’s knowledgeable and can see.

“I’m even happy that our kids have blue eyes. If they didn’t have her kind of eyes, I would have been hurt. My parents never said so and I didn’t even think about it.”

He also denied claims of not providing for the welfare of his children, explaining that “the longest I have gone without seeing them is one month. Every other week, I would visit them and go with rice, beans, sometimes bread and juice.”

Abdulwasiu expressed regrets that his children were displayed on social media to solicit for funds.

“I have been providing for her and the children, even to the knowledge of her parents; but they were not satisfied, until they posted pictures of my children on Facebook, using them to beg for alms. They claimed that I wasn’t providing for my family.

“It’s because I have no one. If I had influential folks, I would have gone to pick them since.

“They are looking for sudden wealth, sudden riches from people. Even me, who spent all I had to take care of the kids, I haven’t gone to meet anyone for help. I tried my best and ask God for help,” he added.

Meanwhile, concerned Nigerians at home and abroad had offered to help the 30-year-old mother-of-two, who narrated the experience she had been facing for having blue eyes.

Among them is the wife of Kwara State Governor, Mrs. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, who also offered to mediate between Risikat and Abdulwasiu.

Breaking News: Joe Biden Picks Kamala Harris As His Running Mate

US Presidential Election: Joe Biden Picks Kamala Harris As Running Mate

US Presidential Election: Joe Biden Picks Kamala Harris As Running Mate
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris

Presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate, Joe Biden, announced on Tuesday that Kamala Harris will be his Vice-Presidential running mate to try to unseat incumbent Donald Trump in the November election.

Harris becomes the first Black woman and the first South Asian to run for United States vice president.

In her first public statement as a nominee, she said he was “honored” to join Biden “and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief” on her Twitter account with a Biden-Harris banner on top.

Biden’s campaign said he and Harris would make their first joint appearance on Wednesday in Wilmington, Delaware, where Biden lives and has spent most of his time in recent months limiting campaign travel because of the coronavirus pandemic.

In Harris, a senator from California who made her own run for the White House before ending it and endorsing Biden, he gains a deeply experienced politician already battle-tested by the rigours of the 2020 presidential campaign as they head into the final stretch of the November 3 election.

“I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate,” Biden said on Twitter.

The long-anticipated announcement came less than a week before the Democratic National Convention, August 17-20, which will be held largely online because of the coronavirus pandemic.

As vice presidential nominee, Harris is scheduled to speak Wednesday, August 19 – one night before Biden is expected to formally accept the Democratic nomination.

Trump said he was “surprised” Biden chose Harris because she was “nasty” and disrespectful” during the primaries, speaking on Tuesday at a White House briefing.

Former President Barack Obama said “Biden nailed this decision”, and said Harris “is more than prepared for the job”, in a tweet.

The 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton called Harris “an incredible public servant and leader” and would be “a strong partner” for Biden, she said in a tweet.

Harris, who became only the second Black woman to hold a US Senate seat when she was elected in 2016, will be relied on to help drive the Black vote – the Democratic Party’s most loyal constituency. Four years ago, the first dip in Black voter turnout in 20 years contributed to Clinton’s upset loss to Trump.

Biden, whose foundering campaign was rescued by Black voters in South Carolina’s primary in February, needs their strong support against Trump. It will be crucial in battleground states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin that Trump won by the slimmest margins in 2016, but where opinion polls now show him trailing his Democratic rival.

The Black vote is also central to Biden’s hopes of winning Southern states Georgia and Florida that Trump carried four years ago but that polls indicate will be competitive this year.

Biden served as vice president for eight years under Obama, the first Black US president.

Harris, 55, a former prosecutor and state attorney general in California, is well known for her sometimes-aggressive questioning style in the Senate, most notably of Brett Kavanaugh during his 2018 Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

As a presidential candidate, she also took Biden to task in a nationally televised debate over his past stances on mandatory busing for students as a means to desegregate schools. Some Biden advisers have told Reuters the attacks made them question whether she would be a trusted working partner because of her political ambitions.

While that exchange failed to boost her White House hopes, the Biden campaign will now look for her to train her prosecutorial fire on Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Harris is scheduled to debate Pence on October 7 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The choice of a running mate has added significance for Biden, who will turn 78 in November and be the oldest person to become president if he is elected.

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Denmark midfielder, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, from Southampton in a reported £15 million ($19 million) deal on Tuesday.

Hojbjerg became Tottenham’s first signing since the end of the Premier League season after agreeing a five-year contract with the north London club.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton,” the club said on their Twitter account.

The 25-year-old was stripped of the Saints captaincy and dropped for most of Southampton’s post-corona virus lockdown matches after he informed them he would not be signing a new contract.

Everton were also in the hunt to sign Hojbjerg, but his desire to work with Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is believed to have helped seal his signature.

“What was very important for me was I wanted to play at a club where I could see myself for many years and Tottenham was the one,” Hojbjerg said.

“I am very proud, very happy and excited. I think there is a fantastic future ahead for the club and I wanted so much to be a part of that.

“If you want to achieve the big things, you need 11 leaders on the pitch and to do that everyone needs to take responsibility in their position, bringing everything they have into the team.

“I always like to say whatever you put in, you get out. Spurs has fantastic players, a fantastic manager and a fantastic set-up.”

Hojbjerg, who arrived in England in 2016 from Bayern Munich, had been so intent on joining Tottenham that he liked several social media posts linking him with the club.

In a separate move, Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker-Peters joined Southampton for £12 million after spending the second half of the season on loan at St Mary’s.

Walker-Peters, a Tottenham academy graduate, has agreed a five-year contract with Southampton.

“The last few months on loan have been great for me and a lot of fun too,” the 23-year-old said of his initial Southampton spell.

“I’ve really enjoyed my football, the atmosphere here and also the style of play.

“The club definitely fits the way I like to play, and I hope that people were able to see that during the last month or so of the season.”

FLASHBACK: Obasanjo Targeted Me Because Of His Loss Of Political Relevance In Ogun, South-West —Buruji Kashamu

FLASHBACK: Obasanjo Targeted Me Because Of His Loss Of Political Relevance In Ogun, South-West —Buruji Kashamu
Buruji Kashamu

Even in death, the animosity between late ex-lawmaker from Ogun State, Buruji Kashamu, and former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, remains rife.

Kashamu died at the First Cardiology Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos from COVID-19 complications on Saturday.

In a condolence letter that carried more of jabs than eulogies, Obasanjo said that Kashamu used his lifetime to “maneuver law and politics to escape facing justice on alleged criminal offence in Nigeria and outside”, adding that, “No legal, political, cultural, social, or even medical maneuver could stop the cold hand of death when the Creator of all of us decides that the time is up.”

Before Saturday, Obasanjo had in a letter on January 7, 2014 to the then Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, threatened to withdraw his membership of the in Ogun and South-West over what he described as the treatment of Kashamu with reverence.

Describing the late ex-lawmaker as an habitual criminal wanted abroad for crime in that letter, Obasanjo said, “I cannot and I will not subscribe to a wanted habitual criminal being installed as my zonal leader in the party; a criminal for whom extradition has been requested by the US Government.

“I will consider withdrawing my activity with PDP at local, state, zonal and national levels until the anomalous and shameful situation is corrected.”

But swiftly responding to the former Nigerian President at the time, Kashamu accused Obasanjo of engaging in wicked campaign of calumny and blackmail against him over his perceived loss of political relevance in Ogun State and the South-West.

He said, “It is now clear to all and sundry that why I have become the target of Obasanjo’s wicked campaign of calumny and blackmail is his perceived loss of political relevance in Ogun State and the South-West. In his 18-page satanic letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, I was the other person – indeed the only one (after the President) – that he singled out for his venomous attack. But if the truth be told, I am not the architect of whatever political woes that he is suffering today. Like David, I am just a tool in the hands of the almighty Allah.

“In his usual hypocritical manner, he talked about not being able to work with me because of his principles and decency. But the questions Nigerians should ask him are: where were these principles when he used me to fight Gbenga Daniel? Where was his self-righteousness when I took the party structure from Daniel and handed it to Obasanjo? Where was his decency when he brought Gen. Adetunji Olurin to me and asked that I should roll my structure behind his governorship ambition? Where was his morality when he introduced me to South-West PDP leaders like Engr. Segun Oni, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade and a host of others? Where was his discipline when he hosted me several times in his Hilltop mansion, taking me into his bedroom and innermost recesses? Where was his decency when he accepted donations from me to his church and other concerns?

“Where was his gumption when he mounted the rostrum to sing my praises, praying for me as he did in May 2010 during a reception for the former Minister of Commerce and Industry, Senator Jubril Martins-Kuye? I can go on and on!

“Let me state from the outset that contrary to Obasanjo’s claim, I am not the leader of the party in the South-West. I am just one of the party’s foot soldiers in the zone and it is in that capacity that I am made the chairman of the organisation and mobilisation committee for the party in the zone.”

Cheating Kills Relationships, But Here Are 6 Things That Are Worse

Cheating Kills Relationships, But Here Are 6 Things That Are Worse

Being cheated on is one of the most painful things anyone can experience, and it most definitely can make you walk away from the love of your life: no matter how much you love him/her.

But there are a number of other things that are just as soul-crushing, and can be the cause of separation or a life filled with misery and unhappiness.

And here are 6 of them:

1. Withholding Affection

When you share a life with someone, the most important thing is to feel cared for and loved. However, when your partner does not give you the love and affection you deserve, you start feeling as if you messed up somewhere along the way. Furthermore, the never-ending thoughts of what has happened can drive you insane.

2. Constant Lies

Lies are nothing but nails in the coffin of a relationship. No matter how small they may be, lies can completely destroy a loving relationship. Lies only bring pain and resentment which makes it incredibly difficult for a relationship to heal.

3. Being Under-appreciated

Nobody wants to be in a one-sided relationship, especially if they are not being appreciated. If one of the people in a relationship is being taken for granted, there is no way it can survive in the long run. This will emotionally crush a person, making them feel alone and unloved.

4. Extreme Jealousy

Although a certain amount of jealousy is normal for any relationship, extreme jealousy can create an obstacle that is hard to deal with. When there is too much jealousy in a relationship, both partners are left feeling miserable and deeply insecure.

5. Communication Issues

Two people in a healthy relationship should feel at ease to share everything with each other. Good communication is crucial when it comes to building a shared life. You should be able to rely on each other and talk about ways to solve your problems that satisfy both parties. When communication is troubled, so will be your relationship.

6. Staying Together For The Wrong Reasons

By keeping a rotting relationship alive, you are in effect creating the perfect circumstances for an unhappy future. Staying with someone you don’t love is a bad decision that will eventually hurt not only you but also your partner. It may be hard to get used to but being single for a while is better than being miserable as a couple.
