The Bayelsa State Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja has annulled the election of Duoye Diri, governor of Bayelsa State.
The election was nullified based on a petition by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party, which argued that it was unlawfully excluded from participating in the election.
Diri, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, was sworn in as governor after the Supreme Court sacked David Lyon as governor-elect 24 hours before his inauguration.
In a majority judgment delivered by Justice Yunusa Musa in the petition, the tribunal held that the Independent National Electoral Commission unlawfully excluded ANDP from the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.
It, therefore, ordered INEC to conduct a fresh governorship election in Bayelsa State within 90 days.
On the 8th of May 2017, Nigeria’s Senate President inaugurated a Technical Advisory Committee to review the Companies and Allied Matters Act. On Friday 8th August 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the act into law to replace the 30-year-old Companies and Allied Matters Act of 1990.
In a cnbcafrica interview, Tinuade Awe, Executive Director of the Regulation Division of the Nigerian Stock Exchange and Taiwo Oyedele, Partner and West African Tax Leader at PwC speak on what this law means for doing business in Nigeria.
President Buhari’s aide, Lauretta Onochie, has slammed Winners Chapel founder, Bishop Oyedepo, over his reaction to the new bill signed into law last week.
President Muhammadu Buhari signed CAMA into law on August 7, 2020.
Under the law, religious bodies and charity organisations will be strictly regulated by the registrar-general of Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and a supervising minister.
CAMA provides that the commission may by order, suspend the trustees of an association or a religious body and appoint an interim manager or managers to coordinate its affairs where it reasonably believes that there has been any misconduct or mismanagement, or where the affairs of the association are being run fraudulently or where it is necessary or desirable for the purpose of public interest.
While addressing members of his congregation on Sunday, Oyedepo said such laws were borne of out the government’s jealousy about the prosperity recorded by the church.
“The church works on the pattern delivered by God not the pattern of man. Government has no power to appoint people over churches. This is a secular nation. The church is the greatest asset of God in this country. Please be warned. Judgment is coming. The Lord says I have been still but now I will arise. Anybody that is in this deal is taking poison. This will never work. I am waiting for a day when anybody will appoint a trustee over this church… You can’t gag anybody. We own this country together.
“It is only in Africa that people who are over 80 years still run around to become president. I know that it is the prosperity of the church that is making them jealous. But I am going to live to see an army of many winners soar greater. In this church shall emerge one of the largest concentration of giants on earth.”
Reacting to this outburst, Lauretta Onochie took to Twitter where she said:
I hope this is not true. If it is, Oyedepo will have to manufacture his own country and live by his own laws. As long as he lives and operates within the entity called Nigeria, he will live by Nigerian rules and laws. He will do as he’s told by the lawFace with rolling eyes Enough of lawlessness

The Kano State Police Command has again rescued a man locked up in solitary confinement for the past 15 years by his father.
It was learnt that the victim identified as Ibrahim Lawan has been in illegal confinement since he was 20 as he was locked away by his biological father, Lawan Sheka.
Sheka, said to be the chief Imam of a mosque in the area, fled the house at the arrival of the police, DailyTrust reports.
The victim was rescued at Sheka Quarters, Kumbotso council area of Kano and immediately taken to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Kano Police spokesman, DSP Abdullahi Kiyawa confirming the incident, said the force acted based on confidential intelligence about Ibrahim’s condition on Sunday morning.
This is coming mere days after a young boy was rescued from enclosure where he was locked up with animals by his father and step mothers.
The prime suspect in connection with incessant ritual killings of residents of Akinyele area of Ibadan in Oyo State, Sunday Shodipe, who escaped from police custody, has killed another woman in the community.
The incident occurred on Saturday when the fugitive sneaked into the room of a woman identified as Funmilayo (Iya Ibeji) and smashed her head with an object believed to be a cutlass.
A friend of the victim was said to have alerted neighbours, who rushed her to a private hospital, where they stitched her head but later referred her to the University College Hospital because of the severity of the injuries.
She was also rejected because of lack of bed space.
SaharaReporters gathered that she was later taken to Adeoyo Hospital at Ring Road where she died as a result of lack of proper medical attention to save her life.
An eyewitness, who is also a friend of the victim, Medinat Amusat, while speaking with SaharaReporters, said, “We were together outside the house around 12:00pm before we went to take our bath.
“When I finished taking my bath around 3:00pm and i came out to cook but suddenly the children in the compound came and told me that snake has bitten Iya Ibeji.
“I rushed to her room and i saw her in the pool of her blood with her face wrapped with cotton and blood was still gushing out from her head. I quickly raised alarm and called the neighbours and we rushed her to a private hospital.”
Father of Barakat, a victim of the suspect, Kazeem Bello, who also rushed to the scene of the incident, narrated how a relative told him that Shodipe was the killer of his daughter.
He said, “A relative called me that Shodipe was sighted at Akinyele Elewure Market but i said that is not possible. But when they insisted that they saw him, I have to go there by myself.
“When I got there he has left but those who saw him showed me his picture on their phones. I went to meet the king Alakinyele of Akinyele and narrated the story meanwhile the king could not believe my story too until he put a phone call to a senior police officer in Iyaganku police station who confirmed to him that the suspect has escaped from their custody three days back.”
He therefore accused police of being complicit in the matter.
The situation led to a protest in the area on sunday morning by residents.
The police in the state on 17th July paraded the prime suspect alongside two others in connection with the killing of people at Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan, the capital city.
No fewer than eight persons were killed in a similar circumstance in the area, thereby turning the community into a death zone.
Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu is planning a massive overhaul of the club’s squad following their humiliating 8-2 Champions League last-8 final defeat to Bayern Munich.
According to Sport, Bartomeu wants to totally refresh Barcelona’s ageing squad and has put every senior player in the team up for sale except four: Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Clement Lenglet, Frankie De Jong and Lionel Messi.
Bartomeu also wants to relieve Barcelona coach, Quique Setien, of his duties immediately with former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino the favourite to replace him, though the likes of Max Allegri and Ronald Koeman are also in the frame.
Barcelona has been looking for buyers for the likes of Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal, Samuel Umtiti and Rafinha for some time, though now Bartomeu has added some “untouchables” to the list of players he is prepared to sell.
Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique will also be sold if any reasonable offers are made.
Recall that Barcelona was embarrassed by a ruthless Bayern side in the Champions League on Friday night in Portugal.
Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho both scored two goals each for Bayern, with Robert Lewandowski, Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry and Joshua Kimmich also on target for the Bundesliga champions.
Barcelona did strike through David Alaba’s own-goal and Luis Suarez’s second-half goal.
Barca’s loss against Bayern was their worst defeat in almost 80 years.

He urged all traders to adhere strictly to the COVID-19 protocols for their safety and that of the residents at large.
David Oyedepo, presiding bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide, has kicked against the application of the Company and Allied Matters Acts (CAMA) in churches.
President Muhammadu Buhari signed CAMA into law on August 7, 2020.

While addressing members of his congregation on Sunday, Oyedepo said such laws were borne of out the government’s jealousy about the prosperity recorded by the church.
Oyedepo questioned the rationality behind subjecting churches to the same laws as companies, describing the church as God’s heritage on earth.
“The church is God’s heritage on earth. Molest the wife of somebody and you will see the anger of that person. The church is the bride of Christ. You know how a strong man is when you tamper with his wife. The church is the body of Christ. We are under obligation to give warnings to wicked rulers so we could be free from their blood,” he said.
The lawyer for the late Senator Buruji Kashamu, Mr Ajibola Oluyede, said on Sunday that the narcotics case against his client in the United States was a case of mistaken identity.
He said the British court refused to hand Kashamu over to the US for prosecution after an English magistrate, Tim Workman, in 2003 “finally came to the conclusion that the US authorities had falsified evidence.”
“He (Workman) therefore unconditionally discharged PBK (Prince Buruji Kashamu),” Oluyede said in a tribute to the deceased, titled, “PBK the Warrior Prince.”
In a tangential reference to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s verdict on Kashamu, Oluyede said his client’s “mostly successful legal actions were not legal maneuvers, but the intelligent response of a warrior to the attempts by his stronger Nigerian adversaries (who were used to living above the rule of law) to subdue him.”
Oluyede said, “The US authorities apparently knew that Buruji Kashamu was not the man referred to as ‘Alaji’ by a group of students caught with drugs in 1994 at the airport in Chicago. Yet they decided to hide evidence from the British courts, which indicated that they had arrested the wrong man in London in 1998 (this was the finding of a panel of three British Justices who heard PBK’s habeas corpus application in 2000).
“For this reason the panel of Justices set aside the committal order made for his extradition to the US from the UK.
“His political adversaries seized various distortions of his odyssey in the UK to give the false impression that his wealth was derived from an alleged 1994 offence from which the British courts had exonerated him.
“Failing to dent his growing popularity by this attack on his image, PBK’s adversaries embarked upon a scheme to secure the help of the US authorities to abduct and actually take him out of circulation.
“PBK fought various schemes to abduct and ship him off to the US till his last breath.”
Sevilla wrecked Manchester United’s hopes of ending the season with silverware as they edged a hard-fought Europa League semi-final in Cologne.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost their third semi-final this season despite taking the lead when Bruno Fernandes scored their 22nd penalty of the season after Marcus Rashford was fouled by Diego Carlos.
Sevilla, Europa League specialists, equalised before the interval when former Liverpool forward Suso swept a finish past David de Gea at the far post.
United’s fate was sealed when they missed a succession of chances early in the second half as Sevilla keeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero, denying Anthony Martial several times.
And Sevilla, who saw off Wolves in the quarter-final, secured their place in the final when Luuk de Jong swept home a cross from Jesus Navas with 12 minutes left, United punished for poor defending which led to recriminations as Fernandes confronted Victor Lindelof in the aftermath.
Profligate Man Utd pay the price
Manchester United’s long season came to a bitterly disappointing conclusion as they missed out on the chance to lift their first trophy since they won this tournament under Jose Mourinho more than three years ago.
And they have only themselves to blame for a lack of killer instinct in front of goal, especially in that opening phase of the second half when Bounou denied them, especially Martial, but United simply had to take one of those chances.
It left Sevilla in the game and, as this talented side have proved before, they are experts at finding a way to win in the Europa League.
And so it proved with De Jong’s late goal, helped by awful United defending as they switched off from Navas’ cross, with Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka culpable.
United could not respond as they looked heavy legged, Solskjaer waiting until late on before introducing a raft of chances more in hope than expectation.
Man Utd triple failure shows flaws
Manchester United rescued their season in the second half of the campaign, fuelled by the signing of Fernandes, but losing three semi-finals in a single term is a poor effort.
Solskjaer’s season has finished respectability with a third-placed finish in the Premier League but weaknesses were exposed by the loss to Manchester City in the EFL Cup semi-final, Chelsea in the FA Cup and now this defeat by Sevilla.
It will no doubt strengthen Solskjaer’s hand as he demands high-class additions in the transfer window but does nothing to disguise the disappointment or the fact that, when the pressure was really on in the big cup games this season, they failed to deliver.
Man of the match – Yassine Bounou

Sevilla have reached their sixth Uefa Cup/Europa League final, at least two more than any other side.
Manchester United have now been eliminated from European competition by Spanish opposition for the third consecutive campaign.
Sevilla are now unbeaten in 20 games, just the fourth different side within Europe’s top five leagues this season to enjoy such a run (also Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Real Madrid).
Including both their quarter-final victory over FC Copenhagen and their match with Sevilla, Manchester United had 46 shots, with 21 hitting the target – however, the Red Devils have managed just two goals from the penalty spot in those matches with a conversion rate of 4.4%.
Manchester United have been awarded 22 penalties in all competitions this season, the most by a side in a single campaign within Europe’s top five leagues since Barcelona in 2015-16 (24).
Since his Manchester United debut on 1 February, only Robert Lewandowski (28) and Lionel Messi (27) have had a direct hand in more goals in all competitions than Bruno Fernandes (20 – 12 goals, eight assists) within Europe’s top five leagues.
Bruno Fernandes has scored 100% of the 14 penalties he has taken in all competitions this season, netting six for Sporting Lisbon.
