Drama As Lawyers Testifying In Magu’s Probe Are Whisked Away From Presidential Villa, Detained In EFCC Custody

Drama As Lawyers Testifying In Magu’s Probe Are Whisked Away From Presidential Villa, Detained In EFCC Custody

There was drama on Wednesday at the venue of the ongoing probe of Ibrahim Magu, suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, after two lawyers, Fatima Hassan and Victor Giwa, were whisked away by operatives of the anti-graft agency from the Presidential Villa where a panel led by Retired Justice Ayo Salami has been sitting.

In a petition, Donald Wokoma, Special Assistant to Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, accused Magu of attempting to extort him of N75m through Giwa, who he referred to as his former lawyer.

In his testimony before the committee, Wokoma reportedly presented an audiotape of his conversation with the lawyer in order to implicate Magu.

Sources said the panel then summoned Giwa to appear before it on Tuesday where he was confronted with the recording of his telephone conversation with Wokoma.

He challenged the panel to point at any reference to any bribe payment or solicitation in the audio conversation.

Rather, he explained that he was a lawyer to the Vice President’s aide when his account was frozen by the EFCC over a failed amnesty contract involving his company.

He said he challenged the action in court on behalf of Wokoma and got a favourable judgment against the EFCC’s action.

He added that shortly before he got the judgment, EFCC had charged the matter to court with Wokoma’s company as defendant and secured a temporary forfeiture order against the account, pending the determination of the substantive matter and the anti-graft agency also appealed against his secured order for the release of the account.

According to Giwa, his former client became desperate and wrote several petitions against the EFCC and Magu to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, despite his warnings against such action.

After a while, Giwa said Wokoma told him that he had secured the services of another lawyer, Hadjia Fatima Hassan, who promised to secure the unfreezing of his account with the payment of N75m service charge which made him withdraw from matter.

The panel then demanded if he could get Fatima to appear before the panel.

On appearing before the panel on Wednesday, she confirmed the story of Giwa and went further to confirm ownership of the account numbers brandished in some sections of the media belonging to the ‘Magu boys’.

She defended the N75m as the agreed fee between her and Donald, claiming the accounts were that of her daughter, construction company and brother.

Hassan challenged the panel to conduct independent investigation into the bank accounts through NFIU to confirm the veracity of her defence.

Giwa also expressed his disappointment in the Chairman who is a lawyer, for accepting the tape containing a client-lawyer confidential conversation as evidence against him.

In frustration, the panel ordered the two lawyers to excuse them.

As both lawyers exited the venue of the sitting, they were both arrested by officials of the EFCC and taken to the Wuse 2 office of the commission.

The duo were on Thursday granted bail from the EFCC custody after they were asked to produce a level 12 officer of the federal service as surety.

A source told SaharaReporters that Malami had attempted the arrest of the lawyers using the police but the Inspector-General of Police turned down the request but the Acting EFCC Chairman, Mohammed Umar, who is equally struggling to impress him and have his acting tenure extended, willingly played ball and deployed officers for the arrest.

Europa League Final: Preview Of Sevilla Vs Inter Milan Match

Europa League Final: Preview Of Sevilla Vs Inter Milan Match

Inter Milan manager, Antonio Conte, says he “sees the glass as half full” after their Champions League group-stage elimination resulted in them reaching Friday’s Europa League final.

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku has scored in each of his last seven European matches for Inter (eight goals, four assists)

Inter face five-time winners Sevilla in Cologne (20:00 BST), looking to win a first trophy in nine years.

Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui has yet to win a trophy as a manager.

“It’s been a positive season. We’ve done important things and have made major improvements,” said Conte.

“We’ve managed to get to the Europa League final, despite the small disappointment of not getting through the Champions League group stage.

“It has allowed us to have a much more successful journey in the Europa League than we would have had in the Champions League. I think this team – with a lot of young, inexperienced players – needed that.”

Inter finished third in their Champions League group, behind Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, but have won all five Europa League matches, including a 5-0 demolition of Shakhtar Donestsk in the semi-finals.

Uefa Cup/Europa League finals
Sevilla Inter Milan
2006 – 4-0 win over Middlesbrough 1991 – beat Roma 2-1 on aggregate
2007 – penalty shootout win over Espanyol after 2-2 draw 1994 – beat Austria Salzburg 2-0 on aggregate
2014 – penalty shootout win over Benfica after 0-0 draw 1997 – lost to Schalke on penalties after 1-1 aggregate draw
2015 – 3-2 win over Dnipro 1998 – beat Lazio 3-0
2016 – 3-1 win over Liverpool

Sevilla winger Lucas Ocampos and Inter forward Alexis Sanchez are both injury doubts for the game.

Three-time Uefa Cup winners Inter were second in Serie A, their best finish since 2011 – which was also the year they last won a trophy, the Coppa Italia.

Conte took charge last summer and brought in five players from the Premier League, including 33-goal top scorer Romelu Lukaku, who has netted in a record 10 consecutive Europa League matches.

“It will be a tough game,” said former Chelsea boss Conte. “We’re playing the team with the most experience and who have won the most titles over the past decade of this competition.

“We have to be attentive but also play our own game with great enthusiasm and courage, like we have done so far.

“It’s a final and only the best teams get to the final. It’s always important to be able to say to the lads, at the end of the game, that we don’t have any regrets.”

Sevilla are the most successful team in the tournament’s history, winning all five of their Uefa Cup or Europa League finals.

Lopetegui, like Conte, is in his first season in charge. He has yet to win silverware in spells as head coach of Rayo Vallecano, Porto, Spain and Real Madrid.

The La Liga club are on their longest unbeaten run, with 11 wins and nine draws in their 20 games since 9 February – including wins over Premier League sides Wolves and Manchester United in the previous two rounds.

Their manager says Sevilla’s five titles are irrelevant to Friday’s result.

“This is a completely new and different team, with different players and a different manager,” said Lopetegui. “It helps that the club have reached this stage before, but I don’t think it’s an advantage for anybody.

“Two totally different teams are playing, and we are up against a great team.

“Inter are a team equipped to compete in the Champions League, given the calibre of players they have, which is extraordinary, and their very experienced manager who has coached many top teams.

“What I expect is a top-quality match which will demand the best of us. “We will try to prepare well for it and have the answers for such a daunting challenge.”

Inter Milan will become the second most successful side in Uefa Cup/Europa League history if they win. They have come out on top in three of their four previous finals.

They are the first Italian side to reach the final since 1999 – when Parma beat Marseille 3-0 – and are bidding to end an eight-year run of only Spanish and English sides winning the competition.

Match stats

  • This is the first European meeting between Sevilla and Inter Milan – the sixth time in 11 seasons of the Europa League that has been the case for the teams in the final.
  • Inter have reached their 10th major European final (the ninth team to achieve that) and their first since the 2010 Champions League final, when they won 2-0 against Bayern Munich.
  • Only Liverpool (six between 1973 and 1984) and Real Madrid (all nine since 1985) have won more consecutive European finals than Sevilla’s five.
  • Inter have won all five of their Europa League matches this season and are looking to win six major European matches in a row for only the second time (six between December 2009 and April 2010).
  • Sevilla have never lost a one-off knockout match in Uefa Cup/Europa League history (P8 W6 D2 – winning the two draws on penalties).
  • Antonio Conte and Julen Lopetegui are both managing in their first major European final. They are two of the six managers to have managed at least 10 games in the Europa League with a win ratio of 70% or more.
  • In the semi-finals, Suso and Luuk de Jong became the 10th and 11th different scorers for Sevilla in this season’s Europa League – only Manchester United (12) have had more.

Headless Body Of Company Worker Found On Company Premises

Headless Body Of Company Worker Found On Company Premises

The family of Kingsley Obot, a member of staff of Ellan Star Marine, has demanded investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death on the premises of the company.

The deceased’s family urged the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, to take over the investigation from the Woji Police Division, where the case was being handled.

The demands were contained in a letter titled, ‘Gruesome Murder of Kingsley Okon Obot by Ellan Star Marine Company, Agbaraja Bridge, Woji, in the Obio/Akpor LGA’ and dated June 1, 2020.

The letter, signed by the family’s lawyer, Paulinus Idio, said the deceased’s headless corpse was found on the premises of the company on May 5, 2020.

The family said the victim worked with the company for about two months before he was allegedly beheaded on its premises during working hours and thrown into the sea.

Kingsley last spoke with his wife on the telephone on May 5, 2020.

His younger brother, Donald, who visited the company, was reportedly informed that he went out to drink and never came back.

“About 30 minutes after Mr. Donald Obot left the company premises, one Boco, a staffer of the same company, called Donald that the sea wave just washed up a corpse and that he should come and see if it was his brother’s body. Donald rushed back and identified his headless brother.

“Subsequently, with the threat of the SARS officers, they later brought Kingsley’s head within the company’s yard. The said body was taken with the head to a mortuary in Eleme the same day the brother visited the company, which was on May 29, 2020 and also found out that a certain chemical was used on the victim’s body for speedy decomposition,” the letter read in part.

The family alleged that the company had been threatening the life of the worker who found the corpse, adding that many other workers had died mysteriously on the premises.

Boco, however, said his life was not under threat.

The letter further read, “Our client reported the case at the Woji Police Division and seven suspects were arrested, but they were all released the same day wherein our client alleged compromise, as the IPO (Investigating Police Officer) was constantly calling him to settle with the company and allow the case to die naturally.

“We are not confident with the operation of the Woji Police Division and we are most fervently calling on you to take over the matter and arrest the perpetrators and investigate the case of murder and conspiracy to cover up.”

A spokesman for Ellen Star Marine, Peter Williams, however, denied allegations that many other persons had died on the company’s premises.

Williams said the deceased was believed to have been drunk on the day of the incident and had fallen into the water.

He said the family demanded N150m from the firm, which he said the company could not afford.

Williams said, “He was a ship officer of the company. From what we learnt, he fell into the water during the COVID-19 lockdown and many, who had seen him earlier, assumed that he might have gone home. No one knew that he had fallen into the water until one day when a barge was pulled out.

“The guys who usually worked with him were invited by the police. They were released and we discussed a settlement. The family demanded N150m and we said it was not done that way. We offered N500,000 and then N1.5m, but the family rejected it.”

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, said he was not aware of the case, but promised to find out and call back.

He had yet to do so as of Press time.

Manchester United Captain Harry Maguire ‘Arrested For Attacking Police After A Fight’

Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire, has been arrested on the Greek island of Mykonos for ‘attacking police outside a bar’, according to reports.

The England international was allegedly involved in a dispute with other British tourists in the early hours of Friday morning before police intervened.

Greek outlet Protothema have claimed three suspects, including Maguire, then attacked the police physically and verbally before being taken to Mykonos police station.

Manchester United have commented and a statement read: “The club is aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night.

“Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully co-operating with the Greek authorities.

“At this time we will be making no further comment.”

A police official told ESPN: “The soccer player was verbally abusive to an officer and then hit him. The three were resisting when brought to the Mykonos police station.”

Footage posted to social media showed Maguire mingling with other tourists earlier on this week. Partner Fern Hawkins posted a picture of the pair to Instagram on Thursday.

Maguire joined United in an 80 million Pounds deal from Leicester City last summer and he is the most expensive defender in the world.

He played in all of United’s domestic games this season as the club finished third in the Premier League.

Maguire was named captain of the club in January following Ashley Young’s transfer to Inter Milan.

United players are currently on their pre-season breaks after being involved in the Europa League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were eliminated from the competition by Sevilla in the semi-finals.

Federal Government Reciprocates, Bans European Union Flights From Nigeria

Federal Government Reciprocates, Bans European Union Flights From Nigeria

Nigeria will enforce the principle of reciprocity in granting permission to airlines to resume operations into the country as it opens its airspace, the Federal Government said on Thursday.

According to the government, what this means is that only airlines from countries that allow flights from Nigeria will be allowed to fly into and out of Nigeria.

It specifically stated that airlines from the European Union would not be allowed into Nigeria as the EU had recently banned flights and visitors from Nigeria.

On July 2, 2020, it was reported that the Council of the European Union had opened its borders to 15 countries, excluding Nigeria.

According to information obtained from the EU website at the time, Nigeria was still not a part of the countries from where visitors were allowed into Europe.

Speaking at Thursday’s briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said Nigeria’s position was informed by the ban placed by some countries on flights from Nigeria.

The minister, who was represented by the Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Capt. Musa Nuhu, argued that the decision was taken in the interest of Nigerians.

He said, “On the list of countries (that are banned), we are working on the comprehensive list, but the main one that came up is when the EU opened their borders effective 1st July, Nigeria was among the list of 54 countries that were not allowed to enter the EU.

“To my understanding, as the situation changes, they are going to look at the list and change it. But so far, we don’t have any contrary information to that first one that Nigeria is banned from going to the EU.

“So, as we open our airspace, we are going to apply the issue of reciprocity to those (EU) countries.”

Sirika also stated that airlines would be informed on arrangements that had been put in place to ensure that the resumption of flights were hitch-free.

He stated that for now, only a few flights per day would be permitted, adding that they would operate as test runs of the protocols put in place to ensure the safe return to international operations.

The protocols, according to him, would be made public in due course.

Sirika also stated that inbound international passengers would be limited to 1,280.

He said only this number would be allowed to fly into the Lagos and Abuja airports once international flights resume on August 29, 2020.

CAN President, Rev Dr. Olasupo Ayokunle

The Christian Association of Nigeria has described the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on August 7 as ‘ungodly’, saying it will not be accepted by it.

In a statement on Thursday by Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant on Media and Communications to CAN President, Rev Samson Ayokunle, the Christian body said that the Nigerian Government had declared war on the church by trying to implement the new law.

The statement reads in part, “The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria rejects outrightly the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 that was assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari recently,  noting that the law is unacceptable,  ungodly,  reprehensible and an ill-wind that blows no one any good.”

According to section 839 (1) and (2) of the law, the supervising minister is empowered to suspend trustees of an association (in this case, the church) and appoint the interim managers to manage the affairs of the association for some given reasons.

Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Dr David Oyedepo, had earlier condemned the law, saying it was against the work and progress of the church.
