2023: I Didn’t Join APC Because I Want To Be Tinubu’s Running Mate – Dogara

2023: I Didn't Join APC Because I Want To Be Tinubu’s Running Mate – Dogara
Former Speaker, House of Representative, Yakubu Dogara
The immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has dismissed as a distraction, reports of his presidential ambition in 2023, especially being the running mate to the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Dogara’s media aide, Turaki Hassan, in a statement issued on Sunday, alleged that the reports were being sponsored by the Bauchi State Government.

The statement was titled ‘Rt. Hon. Dogara is Concerned about Tackling the Challenges of Our Nationhood Than 2023.’

It partly read, “It has come to our notice that stories and images are being circulated on social media to the effect that His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, is running for the office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for President in 2023.

“Our initial decision was to ignore them since they are utterly baseless but it appears that the promoters of this fallacy are unrelenting in spreading the falsehood and have now succeeded in making it sound believable to the extent that even some conventional and ‘credible’ media platforms are beginning to take it up.

“In order to stop the further spread of this deliberate mischief, whose objective is yet to be ascertained, the public is hereby advised to disregard and totally discountenance the purported story and pictures for what they are – handiwork of mischief makers.

“These stories and pictures, we understand, are being sponsored by officials of the Bauchi State Government in their desperate bid to lend credence to the infantile delusions of their principal, captured in his ludicrous postulations that Rt. Hon. Dogara left the PDP just because he was ‘deceived’ by the APC with the promise of a position come 2023.”

Hassan recalled that the Governor of Bauchi State, Sen. Bala Mohammed, had allegedly publicly alluded to the claim and had “continued to push these narratives all in an effort to malign and disparage the person of Rt. Hon. Dogara and divert attention of the people from issues of poor governance in the state.”

The statement further read, “2023 is still years away and, therefore, it is unnecessary, distracting and insensitive to start making unfounded declarations at this time when all hands ought to be on deck in tackling the challenges of our nationhood.

“Furthermore, to our best knowledge, no political party sells nomination and expression of interest forms for the post of a running mate as he/she is only appointed or selected by a flag bearer. It is, therefore, preposterous for anyone to claim that someone is running for the position of VP when no flag bearer has emerged.

“His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, is busy helping to rebuild and reposition the APC in Bauchi State and wishes to be allowed to focus on just that.”

Dogara, who represents Dass/Tafawa Balewa/Bogoro Federal Constituency of Bauchi in the House of Representatives, had dumped the All Progressives Congress for the Peoples Democratic Party in 2018 but returned to the APC on July 24, 2020.

The lawmaker had said he dumped the PDP to re-join the APC because the mistakes made by the immediate past administration were being repeated by Mohammed’s government.

Dogara, in a letter written to the Chairman of the PDP Bogoro ‘C’ Ward, Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi, dated 24th July, 2020, said he left the PDP because of failure of governance and mismanagement of resources in Bauchi, which have remained unanswered to him.

Dillian Whyte Stunned By Alexander Povetkin As WBC World-Title Shot Disappears

Povetkin’s hand is raised and he joins Anthony Joshua as the only men to beat Whyte
Dillian Whyte’s hopes of a world-title shot were wrecked as Alexander Povetkin twice rose from the canvas to land a stunning knockout win.

The Russian had been out-boxed for three rounds and was down twice in the fourth as Whyte mixed poise with power.

But just as Whyte appeared to be closing in on a shot at the WBC world heavyweight title, Povetkin produced a devastating left uppercut in the fifth.

Whyte, who needed treatment, will get a rematch according to Eddie Hearn.

The London fighter, 32, left without speaking to the media but was picked up by Matchroom Boxing’s Twitter channel asking promoter Hearn whether a rematch was possible this year.

“It’s one of those things, it just landed. I was bossing it. It is what it is. A rematch, let’s go,” he was heard to say.

Costello and Bunce: On-the-bell reaction to shock Whyte knockout, Joshua offers Whyte hope of title shot

“I can’t quite believe it,” said Hearn. “When the punch landed I felt like I was in some dream. The fight was over virtually. Dillian was measuring Povetkin up, then two heavy knockdowns.

“I and others thought it was over. This is the drama of heavyweight boxing – one punch can change everything.

“He has to do a job in a rematch.”

Whyte is out on the floor

Whyte was dominant but could not find his feet after Povetkin’s uppercut. Povetkin, who has only lost to Wladimir Klitschko and IBF, WBO and WBA world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in a 39-fight and 15-year-long career, simply found “the best punch he has ever thrown” according to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Steve Bunce.

With no fans in the garden of Matchroom Boxing’s headquarters, the jubilant celebrations of Povetkin’s team were all there was to hear as Whyte lay, almost motionless, on his back.

The British heavyweight had been just about punch perfect for 12 minutes. Shots to the body left red marks on 40-year-old Povetkin, while jabs to the Russian’s face looked to be discouraging the underdog.

Two hard right hands and a short left hook combined sweetly to floor Povetkin in the fourth and, before the bell, Whyte drove home a left uppercut when backed to the ropes to send his rival down again.

But moments later the tables turned and Povetkin dipped to his left and thrust an uppercut of his own on to Whyte’s chin.

Povetkin had been written off as past it by some, while others point to two drug bans as evidence he should not be in the sport. The devastating nature of his finish will only serve to underline the threat he continues to carry, however.

Since his only previous defeat, by Joshua in 2015, Whyte – who also served a drugs ban in 2012 – has put solid names on his record.

His refusal to simply sit and wait for his world title chance endeared him as a risk taker to fans and undoubtedly improved him as an athlete and fighter.

But one punch ultimately proved why this is a risky strategy and he must now get back to work if he is to revive his hopes of a first world-title shot.

‘One roll too many’ – reaction

Whyte (left) asked promoter Eddie Hearn if a rematch was possible this year. Former world middleweight champion Andy Lee on BBC Radio 5 Live: “I am in shock. That is a sensational upset. That’s heavyweight boxing where one punch can change it all.

“Whyte will be kicking himself – that’s a devastating knockout. He was so close to a world title for so long. It’s a tragedy he was a contender for 1,000 days but he has rolled the dice just one too many times.”

BBC Radio 5 Live boxing analyst Steve Bunce: “That was just a perfect shot, the best punch Povetkin has ever thrown. That is boxing. When people say ‘one punch can change a fight’ they are not joking. Whyte can come again, no sweat.”

“You Are A Liar With No Principles” – Trump’s Sister To Him

"You Are A Liar With No Principles" - Trump's Sister To Him

MaryAnne Trump Barry, older sister of President Donald Trump, has said that the United States leader was a liar that “has no principles”.

She said this in a secretly recorded audio in 2018 and 2019 obtained by the Washington Post.

Barry, a former federal judge, made demeaning comments about Trump and how he has performed as US President.

“His goddamned tweet and the lying, oh, my God,” she says in one of the recordings posted by the newspaper. “I’m talking too freely, but you know. The change of stories. The lack of preparation. The lying.

“All he wants to do is appeal to his base. He has no principles. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this.”

Barry continued by saying that Trump hasn’t read her immigration opinions if he thinks she would be his ally on the border, adding that he doesn’t read in general.

The President’s sister said she disagreed with “what they’re doing with kids at the border” and has once berated another judge for not treating an asylum seeker with respect.

In the audio, Barry also described the President as a “brat,” adding that she “did his homework for him” and “I drove him around New York City to try to get him into college.”

In a statement provided by a White House spokesperson, Trump dismissed the accusations and mourned the recent death of his younger brother, Robert, saying he would continue to miss him.

“Every day it’s something else, who cares. I miss my brother, and I’ll continue to work hard for the American people.

“Not everyone agrees, but the results are obvious. Our country will soon be stronger than ever before,” Trump said.

UEFA Champions League Final: Why PSG Will Beat Bayern Munich

UEFA Champions League Final: Why PSG Will Beat Bayern Munich

After years of massive investments in team, Paris Saint-German (PSG) are one-match away from rewriting their own history when they face Bayern Munich in the final of the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League on Sunday.

PSG are “charged up” to win their first-ever trophy in European football against Bayern Munich, who are in the run for their sixth Champions League title.

Hans-Dieter Flick, whose Bayern Munich team has enjoyed a blistering run to the final are clear favourites for the final billed for Estádio Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon, Portugal but PSG are too dangerous to be written off.

PSG’s Neymar, Mbappe and Di Maria are formidable threats capable of unsettling any team regardless of the shape or the height of the defensive line.

On the other hand, Bayern Munich’s young and experienced team are like a machine and very difficult to stop, but they have shown signs of frailties where they can be hurt.

Bayern’s Vulnerable Set-up
Both teams have been caught napping in the defence and in midfield and in their run to the final but Bayern Munich have a lot to fear.

The German side plays with such a high line that Mbappe and Neymar should have a field day, using their pace to exploit the space behind the Bayern Munich defence.

Although Bayern are on a 29-game unbeaten run and have already won domestic double different instances in the quarter-final against Chelsea, particularly the second-leg and the semi-final against Lyon showed that they can be hunted when they play against teams that play effective .attacking football like PSG.

Error-prone Bayern Defence
Sunday’s final will most likely not be won based on the attacking flair of both sides but their defensive resilience.

So far, PSG have kept seven clean sheets out of ten matches played in the Champions League. Bayern have conceded in five out of ten matches despite out-scoring their opponents. This is likely to have a swing when they play a better defensive and equally attacking side like PSG.

So far, Jerome Boateng and David Alaba combination have looked shaky in recent games, playing against very pacy opposition. In the semi-final against a disjointed Barcelona attack, the duo struggled to be stable when called upon.

But it will be a different ball game when the not-so-quick Boateng will have Mbappe’s pace and techniques to deal with, plus Neymar flair – always inviting a foul from the opposition. In 19 Champions League appearances for PSG, Neymar has been directly involved in 23 goals, scoring 14 times and assisting nine.

Marquinhos, on the other hand, has provided Thomas Tuchel’s PSG with a protective screen to allow the 35-year-old Thiago Silva to complement Presnel Kimpembe.

But how they face an attacking side of Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller’s potency is yet to be seen.

History favours PSG
Bayern Munich and PSG have met eight times previously, all in the UEFA Champions League group stages, the French side have won five of those matches, with Bayern winning the other three, including the most recent game in December 2017.

PSG ran out two-goal winners over Bayern when the two teams met in the group stage of the 1994-95 Champions League in Paris.

The French giants also won when the two teams locked horns in the reverse match back in Germany in November 1994.

Having lost their first two meetings with PSG, Bayern managed to gain some revenge when they next locked horns in the group stage of the 1997-98 Champions League. Indeed, the German giants recorded a thumping 5-1 win on home soil, with Giovane Elber and Carsten Jancker both scoring twice, while Thomas Helmer also registered for Giovanni Trapattoni’s side.

PSG made it three wins from their four matches against Bayern by winning the reverse game in Paris, recording a 3-1 victory.

The two teams again met in the first group stage of the 2000-01 Champions League with PSG winning 1-0 courtesy of a stoppage-time goal from Laurent Leroy.

Bayern had their revenge in Munich, recording a 2-0 victory courtesy of goals from Hasan Salihamidzic and Paulo Sergio.

PSG defeated Bayern in a three-goal win over the Bundesliga giants in the group stages of the 2017-18 Champions League, with Dani Alves, Edinson Cavani and Neymar all on the scoresheet.

Bayern were 3-1 winners when they met in Munich with Robert Lewandowski and Corentin Tolisso (2) on the scoresheet for the hosts, while Kylian Mbappe netted for PSG.

Federal Government Enrolls 15.5m Persons In National Social Register

Federal Government Enrolls 15.5m Persons In National Social Register
President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government says it has enrolled over 15 million persons in the National Social Register (NSR) to fast track implementation of the Social Investment Programme.

Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, stated this during the presentation of food items donated to Nigeria by the ECOWAS Commission, on Saturday in Kano.

“It is worthy to state that at the onset of the pandemic, the National Social Register (NSR) contained data of over 2.6 million poor and vulnerable households, representing over 11 million individuals in the 34 States and the FCT.

In a remark, Sangare Sekou, ECOWAS Commissioner of Agriculture, Water Resources and Environment, said the Commission donated 3,999 tones of food items to Nigeria for distribution to the vulnerable households.

Sekou said the gesture was part of interventions to mitigate the effect of COVID-19, enhance food security and address associated risks to sustainable development in the sub region.

While commending ECOWAS for the gesture, Shehuri reiterated commitment to partner with ECOWAS to enhance food security in the country.

OPINION: Nigeria And ‘Nigeria’ By Akintomide Aroso

OPINION: Nigeria And 'Nigeria' By Akintomide Aroso

It is three years today I wrote the article titled: Nigeria and ‘Nigeria’. I decided to bring it back (although a little edited) for your reading pleasure as some of the issues I wrote about are still relevant, even today.

From where I sit, there was country called Nigeria. And there is one called ‘Nigeria’.

Nigeria was a country that was birthed by the strongwill and singularity of purpose of visionary citizens of a state amalgamated, almost against their wishes by the colonial masters, who put in their years to see their joint-state become the envy of all and the leader of the black race. ‘Nigeria’, on the other hand, is the country we live in: one our heroes past would never have thought will become of their beloved fatherland.

But here we are. Nigeria is now ‘Nigeria’: a product of our own maladministration and gross disregard for all forms of accountability. We have made emperors of public servants and watered down the sufferings of the common man for whom they are supposedly in office.

The fight for independence (and subsequent transition to a Republic) was for Nigeria: a self-governed state of opportunities and freedom where things were done in accordance to set laws of the land, and orderliness is the anchor-act.

‘Nigeria’, on the other hand, is a state ruled by carefrees and well-known, the world over, for its institutionalized acts of corruption, moral decadence, cultural mis-orientation, religious fanaticism, and vices those who fought for independence wouldn’t have thought possible to find amidst the citizens of Nigeria, for whom they fought with the pen and might, almost always putting their individual lives at risk.

We are where we are. I once read someone say the problem with ‘Nigeria’ is ‘Nigerians’. I also once heard a revered man of God speak about how badly ‘Nigerians’ are viewed abroad so much so his police commissioner-friend in the United Kingdom assumed there are three sets of people in the world: the whites, the blacks, and ‘Nigerians’.

How did we get here? How did Nigerians get to become ‘Nigerians’? Isn’t this the country that once had the best military in Africa? Is not this the nation whose Head of State at the time told the world money isn’t the problem with us, but how to spend it? I guess that was Nigeria: ‘Nigeria’ is the world’s poverty headquarters now.

Nigeria began its shameful transition to ‘Nigeria’ from the absurd end of the First Republic. It just didn’t seem so at the time. It takes time for a diseased leg to rotten: and, of course, smell afterwards. The military coup that ended the First Republic didn’t help the country.

As bitter as it is to admit, that singular act of forceful power-grab by the military, which led to the emergence of the then General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army, Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi as military Head of State, still haunts the Igbos. That, on its own, is special discuss.

From the end of that very founding Republic, the country – Nigeria began her unenviable developmental decline to the nation – ‘Nigeria’. This is not to say the country was perfect its Nigerian days, but it was better at that time.

In those days, national leaders had visions they lived and led by. Visionaries called the shots and were doing the dig in sharp contrast to what is obtainable in ‘Nigeria’. Politicians, these days, are all about self-interest and self-wealth-amassment.

What’s the way forward? From where I sit, it’s about unlearning the “self” mantra and picking up the “us” banner. It is generally assumed that ‘if the head is faulty, all other body parts will not be well’. Our leaders should sit up and be ready to be held accountable when the people they serve demand accountability.

Leaders from the Second Republic to this present crop of leaders haven’t really had the interest of the nation at heart. The General Ibrahim Babangida-led administration clandestinely institutionalized corruption.

President Muhammadu Buhari promised change from the status-quo. How much has he faired? If anything, he has only selectively prosecuted perceived enemies and almost free them the moment they become members of his ruling All Progressive Congress.

I wonder what Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, is still doing in office with the evidence of corruption against him. Corruption is an impeachable offence, but man is dancing free and living large off his state.

Our anti-corruption ruler even raised his hands for a second term. Around the retired General’s cabinet, there are endless lists of persons involved in sharp practices and other acts of betrayal of public trust.

We can be great again. We can rise from the ashes of our present state to be the epicenter of world morals and good governance, if only we are willing. Nigeria isn’t short of smart people: the country have just had the misfortune of being ruled by people who are all about self.

There is one thing these ‘rulers’ don’t know: eventually, one day, the people will be tired of being ruled without empathy and will face them, no matter the weapons at the disposal of government or personnel they recruit to protect themselves.

Nigeria was a pride. ‘Nigeria’ is a shame. It is only right government consider the Mali situation, and adjust its policies to make the people its priority.

A word is enough for the wise.

‘World’s Oldest Man’, Aged 116, Dies In South Africa

'World's Oldest Man', Aged 116, Dies In South Africa
Fredie Blom

A South African, Fredie Blom, who was thought to be the oldest man in the world has died at the age of 116.

Fredie Blom’s identity documents showed he was born in Eastern Cape province in May 1904, although that was never verified by Guinness World Records.

When he was teenager, his entire family was wiped out by the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. He went on to survive two world wars and apartheid.

Mr Blom told the BBC in 2018 that there was no special secret to his longevity.

“There’s only one thing – it’s the man above [God]. He’s got all the power. I have nothing. I can drop over any time but He holds me,” he said.

Mr Blom spent most of his life as a labourer – first on a farm and then in the construction industry – and only retired when he was in his 80s.

Fredie Blom

Although he gave up drinking many years ago, he was a regular smoker.

However, a coronavirus-related lockdown imposed by the South African government reportedly meant he was unable to buy tobacco to roll his own cigarettes on his 116th birthday.

Mr Blom’s family said he died of natural causes in Cape Town on Saturday.

“Two weeks ago oupa [grandfather] was still chopping wood,” family spokesman Andre Naidoo told AFP news agency. “He was a strong man, full of pride.”

But within days Mr Blom shrank “from a big man to a small person”, he added.

Mr Naidoo said the family did not believe his death was related to Covid-19.
