FG Must Meet Our Demands Before We End Strike – ASUU Declares

FG Must Meet Our Demands Before We End Strike - ASUU Declares

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has vowed to continue the ongoing strike action until the Federal Government meets all its demands.

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Biodun Ogunyemi, who spoke at the University of Port Harcourt, weekend, during an interactive meeting with critical stakeholders, noted that the demands of ASUU were genuine and in the interest of the nation as it concerns implementation of 2012 universities needs assessment.

Ogunyemi bemoaned that the Nigerian universities lecturers still receive the same salary scale of 2009 in 2020, noting that the sad reality must be addressed before ASUU would suspend the strike action.

He said: “So what we are asking of the government are not baseless things, but those things that in 2012, the government conducted during a NEEDS Assessment survey and found out that there is widespread rot and decay in the university system, we are asking that the government implement its own report of 2012.”

“Salary issues are still there, we have not fully addressed that, it appears that some forces in government are bent on suffering our members by withholding their salaries. But we believe that once we sort out the issues of Universities Transparency and Accountability Solution, other issues will fall in place.

“The 2009 agreement we had with government stipulates that that agreement would be reviewed every three years, but since then, we have not been able to review the salary scale and that is why we are saying that the negotiation we started with government in 2017 ought to have been completed and with the completion of that negotiation process.”

Outrage As 8 Naval Officers Torture Peacemaker To Death Over N250

Outrage As 8 Naval Officers Torture Peacemaker To Death Over N250

Attempts by a peacemaker, Collins Osagie, to settle a disagreement between a spare parts trader and a naval rating in the Okokomaiko area of Lagos State, has cost him his life.

Eight Lagos naval ratings torture peacemaker to death over N250 …

Osagie, a bus driver, was tortured to death for offering to pay the rating N250, the main cause of his disagreement with the trader.

A video of the torture, captured by a resident and posted on Instagram, revealed the moments two of the uniformed men punched and kicked the victim into a gutter.

The 34-year-old was later rushed to a private medical facility where he died.

Photos of the deceased’s corpse, obtained by PUNCH Metro, revealed visible torture marks on different parts of the body. His head also appeared to have been fractured.

The rating behind the attack was identified as Petty Officer Awosanya Olufemi with service number X8921 attached to the CND Apapa Naval Base.

An eyewitness and friend of the deceased, Kingsley, said Osagie was subjected to different rounds of torture around Church bus stop, Iyana Isasi, Okokomaiko.

He said, “The incident happened around 6pm on Monday. Collins (Osagie) went to the area to eat and relax. We were together.

“The military man, who had bought a plug from a spare parts trader in the place, came back to return it, saying his mechanic rejected it and he no longer needed the item.

“The trader refused and said he could not refund the money. This led to an argument between them. Collins stood up from where he was and tried to mediate, but they refused to listen to him.

“The argument degenerated to a scuffle between the navy man and the trader, and the latter head-butted him in the jaw. The rating sustained injuries.

“He took a bus and left. When the trader sensed trouble, he locked his shop and disappeared with his salesgirl.

“A few minutes later, the navy man returned with two other officers to look for the trader.

“Collins approached the navy man and begged him to let the matter die. He also offered him the N250 for the plug.

“One of the officers felt he insulted them and slapped Collins three times. They started beating him up. We all begged them to leave him.”

Kingsley explained that about 20 minutes later, five other military men came into the scene and the rating who had earlier slapped the victim reported to the others what he did.

The five new officers were said to have started another round of torture.

The witness said the men kicked the victim and asked him to do “frog jump”.

Kingsley said around 8pm, he left the area, while Osagie stayed behind.

PUNCH Metro gathered that some of the naval ratings had, however, gone to lay in ambush for the victim, with the hope of also catching the spare parts trader.

Kingsley said he woke early the following day to resume his work when a colleague told him that Osagie was dead.

“I was told that his corpse was found on the road. I mobilised fellow bus drivers to look for him. While we were looking for him, a trailer driver who parked by the roadside asked who were looking for and we told him.

“He said he saw some military men beating him late in the night. He directed us to see some mallams who used a wheelbarrow to take him to a hospital. The mallams confirmed and said they took him to a private hospital.

“We got to the hospital and met his corpse. A doctor said he died around 2am,” he added.

The case was subsequently reported at the Okokomaiko Police Station.

A relative of the deceased, Sunday Ajose, said Kingsley and other drivers were passing around the naval base at Okokomaiko when the rating, Olufemi, sighted them.

Ajose explained that the official, who was not aware of the development, wondered if the group had come for a reprisal and started to chase them.

“He crossed the road to pursue them and was quickly grabbed, thrown into a bus and taken to the police station. The case was then transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

“At the SCIID, where he was queried, he said he did not ask his colleagues to beat Collins, whereas he was there the whole time he was tortured. He refused to disclose the details of the other ratings, saying he only knew one Kelechi,” he added.

Ajose, who lamented that the naval authorities had yet to condole with the family, said he had been spending a lot of money on the mortuary bills.

He said the family had run out of funds, as the police were also making demands to fast-track the case.

“When those men were beating Collins, somebody captured it on the phone and posted it on Instagram.

“As the officers were beating him and kicking his head, the crowd was screaming that they should not break his head and that was exactly what happened to him. He had a fracture in his skull and there were bruises on his corpse. Even in death, blood was still coming out from his nostrils and ears,” he added.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the whereabouts of the spare parts trader, Cletus Ben-Onyejimbe, had been unknown since the incident.

When our correspondent called him, he refused to react.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing.

He said the police needed to ascertain if the culprits were indeed military officers.

A spokesperson for the Western Naval Command, Commander Thomas Otuji, said the naval police unit had been asked to identify the killer ratings and bring them to justice.

Police, DSS, IPOB Give Conflicting Casualty Numbers Reports After Bloody Clash In Enugu

Police, DSS, IPOB Give Conflicting Casualty Numbers Reports After Bloody Clash In Enugu

No fewer than 10 persons were killed on Sunday in Emene, in the Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, when policemen, operatives of the Department of State Services and members of the Indigenous People of Biafra clashed.

The clash threw Emene and its environs into confusion and disrupted church services as worshippers ran helter-skelter to escape being caught in the crossfire.

It was gathered that trouble started around 7am when some DSS operatives and policemen stormed Practicing School Emene, where the members of IPOB were observing their Jewish prayers, and started to arrest them.

Eyewitnesses said attempt by IPOB members to resist the arrest led to the shooting, during which one IPOB members was initially killed and others injured.

It was gathered that seeing one of them in a pool of blood, other IPOB members attacked the security operatives and killed two policemen and two DSS operatives.

A reinforcement was said to have been called and over a dozen patrol vans loaded with armed security agents, comprising police, soldiers and DSS, arrived at the scene and faced the Biafran agitators, killing about five of them.

It was gathered that over 30 members of IPOB were subsequently arrested.

When one of our correspondents visited the area, sound of gunshots and teargas fumes filled the air.

One of our correspondents counted five dead bodies with one burnt beyond recognition on the road.

The police and the DSS were said to have taken the bodies of their men to the morgue.

A policeman, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said, “When my team arrived, the IPOB members had taken over the street and making bonfires to prevent security men from coming into the venue of their prayer.”

Four persons died in the confrontation – Police

The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Abdurrahman, said the police arrested five IPOB members, while four persons were killed.

The commissioner, who spoke on the telephone said, “It was a DSS operation; it was when it turned bloody and IPOB seized their men that they sought our intervention.

“When my men arrived at Emene, they came under heavy fire from the miscreants. So they have to take cover and replied and when they saw that the problem was too much, they called for reinforcement, then the DSS also called the military.

“So it was an operation to rescue DSS operatives and at the end, I arrested five; then two corpses. They killed two people and they burnt one other alive.

“They killed one other person whose identity was not known. The injured are receiving treatment, including the IPOB members that we arrested.

“Maybe other members of IPOB were with DSS because they also made arrest and military also effected arrest also.”

Police killed 21 members, arrested 47 – IPOB

Meanwhile, the Media and Public Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, on Sunday in a statement in Anambra State said the group would avenge the killing of its members in Enugu.

The group said, “Today (Sunday), the Nigerian security personnel stormed IPOB meeting ground in Enugu and started shooting sporadically which consumed the lives of 21 members and 47 arrested for no just cause or provocation.

“Those responsible for this barbaric killing in Enugu today must pay for their actions against IPOB at the appropriate time. It is laughable for the DSS to be claiming that they lost five personnel in the hands of unarmed and peaceful people. It is clear to all that IPOB doesn’t carry arm.”

The group warned that keeping quiet and following the rule of law should not be misconstrued as weakness on its part.

It added, “We are warning and asking the Nigerian government and its security operatives to stop this atrocity. Why have they refused to confront Fulani terrorist herdsmen, Boko Haram terrorists, Ansaru group, Fulani bandits, ISIS and other groups ravaging the country and busy killing innocent and unarmed citizens of IPOB?”

IPOB members attack DSS patrol team, kill two operatives

The Department of State Services said two of its men died on Sunday when a patrol team was attacked by IPOB members.

The service did not provide details of the attack but said a comprehensive investigation had commenced into the incident.

The DSS Public Relations Officer, Dr Peter Afunanya, disclosed this in a statement titled, ‘Unprovoked violent attack on DSS patrol team in Enugu.’

It stated, “The DSS wishes to inform the public that its patrol team was, today (Sunday), attacked in Emene, Enugu State by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra.

“The service lost two personnel in what was clearly an unprovoked violent attack launched by IPOB on the team.”

The secret police condoled with the families of the departed officers and also prayed for the repose of their souls.

It explained that all measures had been put in place to ensure that their killers and everyone involved in the dastardly act were promptly apprehended and brought to justice.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to work with other security agencies to maintain public safety and order.

It urged law-abiding citizens and residents to go about their normal businesses without fear.

JUST IN: President’s Longtime Adviser Resigns From Office

JUST IN: President's Longtime Adviser Resigns From Office

Kellyanne Conway, a long-serving advisor to President Donald Trump known for sparring with reporters, announced Sunday she will step down to focus on her family.

Conway, 53, has been at Trump’s side since day one, managing his 2016 campaign that catapulted the reality TV star into the world’s most powerful office.

But the past four years of singular loyalty to Trump, including defending him on TV and with informal “gaggles” with the press, have taken a toll.

Her husband, prominent Washington lawyer George Conway, is one of Twitter’s most prolific Trump critics, repeatedly and loudly questioning the president’s mental fitness for office.

Also, Conway’s 15-year-old daughter Claudia wrote on Twitter Saturday that she was “devastated” that her mother would speak at the Republican convention, and pledged to seek legal emancipation “due to years of childhood trauma and abuse”.

Less than 24 hours later, Kellyanne Conway tweeted a statement that closes by saying: “For now, and for my beloved children, it will be less drama, more mama”.

Conway said she would step down by the end of the month and that her husband George would also be making some changes.

“We disagree about plenty but we are united on what matters most: the kids,” she wrote.

Conway has become both famous and notorious for sparring with the media, often by finding a way to change the topic, turn the question back on the reporter, or merely complain.

All of which did with a flamboyant fashion sense — snake-skin pattern dress one day, a bright red one the next — standing out in an often-gray city.

Her work led her at one point to be depicted on the long-running US comedy show Saturday Night Live as “Kellywise”, a spoof of the murderous, sewer-dwelling clown from horror novel and film “It”.

Conway also stuck out her White House role while a parade of other aides were forced out, quit or left in humiliation.

Conway, a lawyer and pollster by training, said her departure was her call.

“This is completely my choice and my voice. In time, I will announce future plans.”

Kaduna Government Arraigns Cleric For Saying El-Rufai Will Never Be President

Kaduna Government Arraigns Cleric For Saying El-Rufai Will Never Be President
Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai

The Kaduna State Government has arraigned Abiodun Ogunyemi, Bishop of Zaria diocese, Anglican Communion, in court for saying that the state governor, Nasir el-Rufai, will never be President of Nigeria.

Ogunyemi made the statement in November 2019 over the demolition of churches in Kaduna State.

He said that the governor should stop embarrassing himself with demolition of churches in any part of Kaduna State, noting that any attempt to demolish shops or properties in Sabongari Market is evil, callous and wicked and will be associated with the wrath of God.

“The whole of the Sabongari Market is our land acquired in the early 1900s with genuine C of O which we have submitted to the state government for recertification. Any attempt by el-Rufai to demolish any of our properties in that market will be a direct assault on the church in the whole of Nigeria.

“The governor should know that he will never be President of Nigeria. I speak prophetically as a servant of the living God,” the bishop said.

Ogunyemi was arraigned before a chief magistrate’s court in Kaduna on charges bordering on criminal defamation, injurious falsehood and criminal intimidation, TheCable reports.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him and was granted bail by the court.

A member of the Kaduna Synod and a canon of the Cathedral Church of St Michael, Kaduna, stood in as surety.

However, Director of Public Prosecutions, who led the state legal team, told the court that there were ongoing consultations, which could lead to a peaceful resolution of the case.

The magistrate adjourned the case until October 28, 2020, for continuation.

Oyo Serial Killer Reveals How He Escaped From Police Custody

Oyo Serial Killer Reveals How He Escaped From Police Custody

Suspected serial killer, Sunday Shodipe, has narrated how he escaped from Mokola Police Station, Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday.

The suspect said a female Divisional Police Officer, who was recently deployed to the station ordered one officer (Funsho) to allow him to take his bath.

He said the officer had warned him not to make any attempt to escape while taking his bath, adding that he was not even thinking of running away at that point.

Shodipe disclosed that he finally escaped when he saw that the officer was engrossed in a discussion with another person and not paying attention to him.

He said, “The new female DPO asked officer Funsho to allow me take my bath. He cautioned me not to try to escape when I am taking my bath.

“I escaped when I saw him discussing with another person. I climbed the borehole pole and jumped the fence. The people living in the area saw me when I escaped but they did not raise any alarm.”

SaharaReporters gathered that a young man from Akure, Ondo State, who pleaded not to be mentioned, had volunteered to assist the police when he saw the notice and bounty placed on the suspect.

He was said to have travelled to Ibadan alongside three of his friends with a view to launching a manhunt for the suspect for three days.

Upon their arrival in the state, they were lodged in a hotel where they slept before commencing the search for the fugitive.

The three men were said to have trailed him to where he bought and smoked hemp in the city but decided not to arrest him because of the crowd in the area.

The locals later arrested him while he was alone in a hideout.

The suspect had killed about eight people, mainly women at Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Lagos Begins Removal Of Structures On Right Of Way

Lagos Begins Removal Of Structures On Right Of Way

The Lagos State Government says it has commenced the removal of structures encumbering the Right of Way of the Lekki regional road.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako, disclosed this in a statement titled ‘Lekki regional road project: LASG commences removal of structures on right of way’, which was signed by Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi.

The statement said the removal of encumbrances from Right of Way of the proposed road was imperative to pave way for the smooth execution of the project.

Salako recalled that the ministry had taken its time to go through the due process of stakeholders’ engagement and service of statutory notices on affected structures as expressed in newspaper publications.

The commissioner urged owners and occupiers of identified structures to cooperate by moving out of the approved Right of Way of the regional road.

He added that the commencement of the process of establishing the Right of Way of the road was a strong indication of the government’s determination to execute the project in earnest, which should put a stop to any insinuation of extension of deadlines.

Salako reiterated that the Lekki regional project was a major road being embarked upon by the Lagos State Government to facilitate the transportation and socioeconomic development of the state in line with the agenda of government.

Oba Ogunsanwo: Opening Up Ilara Will Help Decongest Lagos

Oba Ogunsanwo: Opening Up Ilara Will Help Decongest Lagos
Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo
Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, Telade IV, who was recently installed as the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Lagos State, tells ALEXANDER OKERE about his career, childhood and plans for his community

There have been reported disputes in the process leading to the installation of kings in Nigeria recently. What can you say about that of Ilara?

I was selected by the kingmakers as the 55th Alara of the Ilara Kingdom, when my predecessor, His Royal Majesty Alayeluwa, Oba Akeem Okunola Adesanya ll, joined his ancestors in October 2018. He spent 58 years on the throne. Before he joined his ancestors, he was the longest reigning monarch in Lagos State. He became the Oba at the age of 16 and he reigned for 58 years. So, he passed on at the age of 74. May God continue to bless his soul. In November 2019, the kingmakers said it was the turn of my ruling house, which is the Telade ruling house to produce the next Oba Alara of Ilara Kingdom.

Having received a notice to jump-start the process from the state government, through the Eredo Local Council Development Authority, eight of us were picked as contestants. The list was then forwarded to the kingmakers in Ilara. The rest, as they say, is history. I was crowned on Thursday, August 6, 2020, by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who presented me with the staff of office and instrument of appointment on Sunday, August 16, 2020.

How would you describe your recent installation as the Alara of Ilara 60 years after your predecess,or was crowned?

History was made that day because the community had just witnessed another installation of a new oba after 60 years. The elderly and the youths were all excited to see a new king. It is God that chooses kings. I never knew I was going to be a king. As said earlier, the last oba reigned for 58 years. It has been a wonderful experience going through the traditional rites.

You worked for the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, where you served for 26 years. How would you describe your new role as a monarch?

For me, I see it as a another call to service, having been in the service of the state for 26 years and risen through the ranks to become the Executive Chairman, Lagos State Internal Revenue Service. Even my stint in the service was a call to duty to assist the government in getting revenue for the betterment of the citizenry. It is with tax money that most things are done – infrastructure, roads, education, transport, health services and so on. So, when the opportunity came and I was invited, I prayed about it. I also consulted. Later, I decided to go. I said, ‘Why not? Let me go and serve my people.’ As the Yoruba will say, ‘Ile l’abo simi oko.’ All that I had been trying to do in the service, let me join others to try them here and see how we can move this community forward.

What are the potentials in Ilara that you hope to build on?

You must have noticed and observed the potentials that we have in this community. It only takes a visionary leader and someone that has the passion for his people to actually want to be on the right side of history by coming to change things and to ensure that the community excels. We are blessed here with agriculture, in terms of farming and fishing. We have a lot of viable land, good soil, and good weather. Also, we are surrounded by water, including the lagoon and the ocean. So, fishing is part of the natural resources that the almighty God has given to this community.

There is huge potential also for tourism here. We equally have a lot of human capital as well. We have people that are educated. And if we join hands and put our heads together, I want to believe that this community will become what I will call a mini London that everybody will be proud of. So, part of what we intend to do is to partner with the Lagos State Government, through the THEMES agenda of the governor. We are going to partner with the state government and also take initiatives as well to invite private investors to come and see the kind of things that they can do to improve the economic potentials of the community.

The empowerment of the youths is also very important. We will also try and see that we assist our children to continue to be educated and self-reliant because you can’t wait for the government to do everything for you. So, with that, we intend to create some vocational institutions where our children could learn something tangible.

What are the things to learn from the vocational schools?

Things like renewable energy, welding and artworks that they can make and sell.

Ilara appears to be on the outskirts of Lagos. Are you concerned about that?

When you came in here (Ilara), didn’t you see that there is a lot of peace around here, away from the hustle and bustle of Lagos? Everything is fresh here. So, those are some of the things that people don’t know that they can enjoy here. With all the road networks that the government is doing now, this community will be the next place that people can actually come and live. And once the government is able to construct the 4th Mainland Bridge and improve on the multi-modal transport facilities — the use of water, land and by road — people can move from one end of the state to another. So many people can actually live here and be working in Lagos. This will help in decongesting Lagos. And I pray that, very soon, maybe when we are celebrating our first, second and third anniversaries, we will always have things to point at and say God has actually helped us to achieve our goals.

How do you hope to balance your Christian religion with the traditional duties?

That is a good question. The Christians say, ‘In Jesus name’ and ‘By the grace of God.’ The Muslims say ‘Isha Allah,’ or ‘By the grace of Almighty Allah,’ and the traditionalists say ‘By the grace of Eledumare.’ One thing that is common to those three religions is that we all call on the almighty God. Of course, when you are an oba, you are the spiritual head. If you look at the Bible, it is there that, after God, he has placed kings in authority over their subjects. The same thing applies to every other religion. But at the same time, the most important thing is that you should rule with the fear of the almighty God. Because what we know is that the fear of the Almighty is the beginning of wisdom. So, as a ruler, you need to have a lot of wisdom and when you are trying to apply that wisdom correctly, you must also have the fear of Almighty God.

You became the head of the state revenue service before you turned 53. What kind of childhood did you have?

I won’t say I am special to have been appointed into the position. Rather, it is providence. It is just God. I come from a very humble background. My father (who is still alive) was a retired civil servant and my mother (also alive) was a retired headmistress. In those days, when you talk about a teacher’s child, it depicts a very good background and good upbringing. They taught us humility and hard work. And there is no shortcut to get to the top except through hard work and serving your God diligently. I think those contributed a lot to what I have become today and I am very grateful to them. I am glad that this (becoming a king) happened in their lifetime. My father is 83 and my mother is 78, and I am the third child of the family. But to God be the glory, it has been a very good experience. I am very proud of them as my parents. I did my one-year mandatory youth service with Wema Bank Plc. I joined the Lagos State Civil Service in 1991 as an Inspector of Taxes Grade ll. And I am glad I was able to get to the top of my career by becoming the executive chairman of the revenue agency. I am happily married and blessed with children.

Did you grow up in Ilara?

Actually, I was born in Ibadan, Oyo State. My parents were working in Ibadan at that time. But my dad was born in this community. I grew up in Ibadan. Every year, we would come home for Sallah. My parents were Muslims, though they later converted to Christianity. So, we used to come home for Ileya, just like the period that just passed. And each time we came home, I remember that those days, we would go to the stream to fetch water. We swam in the river and things like that. So, each year, I looked forward to it. I am in love with the community. I am very proud to come from this community. I love my people and I have always come home. I built a country home here without knowing God was preparing me ahead. So, like I said, everything was divine.

What has becoming a king changed about you?

Nothing has changed. A friend sent a congratulatory message to me. We attended primary school at the same time in Ibadan. In the message, he said things like, from my young age, I had always lived and comported myself like a king and that everything about me — the aura radiates that of a king and that there is no quality you would look for in a king that I didn’t have. Even my past experiences made me realise that this is divine.

How do you hope to manage your privacy?

I have always been a private person. There are certain things I can’t do anymore. That is what the throne demands and I have accepted it.

Would you describe yourself as stylish?

I have always been a conservative dresser. I love to wear suits to the office as a corporate man and when I am wearing my native attire, I am a bit detailed about it as well. I love some colours. White (as a colour of preference) is good. Blue is good. White is purity and blue is peace. My dressing will always go along that line. I don’t believe in dressing expensively, but I like a decent way of dressing.

What do you do to relax?

I enjoy travelling, reading and listening to music. I am more of an academic.

What kind of songs appeal to you?

I like songs by Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Orlando Owoh, and  Wasiu Ayinde Marshal.

Do you have a favourite meal?

I think amala is my best meal. I also like pounded yam with vegetable soup. Also, I like yam and egg.
