Harry Maguire: Legal Team Lodges Appeal Against Guilty Verdict

Harry Maguire: Legal Team Lodges Appeal Against Guilty Verdict
Manchester United Captain, Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire’s legal team has lodged an appeal against the guilty verdict that led to him receiving a suspended jail sentence of 21 months and 10 days in Greek court, Manchester United say.

In accordance with Greek law, the appeal nullifies Maguire’s conviction and there will be a full retrial in a more senior court.

The sentence, given on Tuesday, is suspended for three years.

The 27-year-old is likely to remain as United captain for the upcoming season.

A Manchester United statement said: “An appeal against yesterday’s verdict was lodged this morning by Harry’s legal team.

“This means that Harry has no criminal record and is once again presumed innocent until proven guilty. Accordingly, he is not subject to any international travel restrictions.”

Tuesday’s trial came after Maguire was arrested following an alleged altercation on the Greek island of Mykonos.

The England defender was named United’s permanent captain in January after the departure of Ashley Young to Inter Milan.

On Tuesday, Maguire was named in the England squad for September’s Nations League matches against Iceland and Denmark.

But he was withdrawn from the squad a few hours later after he was found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult following his arrest last week along with brother Joe, 28, and family friend Christopher Sharman, 29.

Both Joe Maguire and Sharman were sentenced to 13 months in prison, also suspended for three years.

All three men denied all charges.

After the verdict of Maguire’s trial, Manchester United released a statement confirming his intent to appeal, adding that he continued to “strongly assert his innocence”, with his legal team wanting “a full and fair hearing at a later date”.

Amotekun Will Not Be Under The Police – Ondo Gov, Akeredolu

Amotekun Will Not Be Under The Police - Ondo Gov, Akeredolu

The Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum and Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, on Wednesday declared that the South-West Security Network, Operation Amotekun, would not be subsumed under the Nigeria Police.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, had earlier said the structure of the security agency would be defined by the Inspector-General of Police.

But South-West governors objected to the position on the grounds that the bill setting the security agency up was passed by the Houses of Assembly of the six states of the South-West and was duly signed into the law by the governors of the states.

Akeredolu, who spoke on Channels TV programme, Sunrise Daily, on Wednesday, said the agency could not operate under community policing.

According to him, there was a collaboration between the police and the Amotekun corps in order to secure lives and property of people of the region.

He said, “A law set up Amotekun and Amotekun operates under its own law and it’s not going to be subsumed under any setup. No, we will work together, it is a collaboration, but not that it will be subsumed; that is not the thinking and that is not going to be acceptable.”

NDDC: Federal Government Approves N722.3m For Forensic Audit

NDDC: Federal Government Approves N722.3m For Forensic Audit

The Federal Executive Council has approved N722.3m for the forensic audit of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, disclosed this on Wednesday after the virtual FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Akpabio, the field auditors will undertake a complete forensic exercise of the NDDC activities in their respective states of assignments and ascertain total funds and resources paid to contractors for all projects.

They would also compare the total amount of resources expended with the value of what was delivered to the commission and establish if such value is commensurate with the resources expended.

He disclosed that the auditors were also mandated to look into the 12,000 abandoned projects by the NDDC in the Niger Delta.

He said, “By the time I assume office in August 2019, we discovered there was no budget for the NDDC for the year 2019 up to that September.

“So, we submitted two budgets in November to the National Assembly. And it took quite a while until in April. The budget details were given out to the NDDC in April, to end 31st of May, less than six weeks.

“Unfortunately, the National Assembly is right now on leave and the budget of NDDC for 2020 has not been passed. So, to enable us to move forward with the exercise and complete it on time, Mr President graciously directed and approved that the payment for the forensic exercise should be undertaken through the Presidency.”

Bella Thorne Breaks OnlyFans Record, Earns $1million In 24 Hours

Former Disney star, Bella Thorne has broken OnlyFans record by becoming the first user to earn $1 million in the first 24 hours of creating an account.

OnlyFans is known for its X-rated content posted by mostly adult performers and influencers, and Bella charged users $20 a month for access to her feed. Thorne has been quite active on her profile, responding to every DM and “getting to know her fans better and on a personal level.”

The actress who is using the platform to share personal content and never-before-seen photos and videos, noted that she’s using OnlyFans for a combination of reasons, including to conduct research for an upcoming film she’s working on with Sean Baker, the director behind critically acclaimed indie films like The Florida Project and Tangerine.

She said;

“It’s a feature we are researching as I’m living it currently. What are the ins and outs? What does a platform like this do to its users? What’s the connective material between your life and your life inside the world of OnlyFans? … How can it change your life for the worse and the better? How far are you willing to go, and how far do you WANT to go? You can be me, or this talented girl from Montana, and OnlyFans could change your life — if you want it to, of course.”

The actress is still figuring out what she wants to share with OnlyFans users. So far, her page does feature some suggestive imagery which includes numerous bikini photos, her eating a hot dog and nothing explicitly graphic. In a poll however, she did ask her fans what type of content they’d like from her; tongue teasing, lingerie, booty, showering and twerking were among the answers.

Asides making $1 million in the first 24 hours of creating her account, Bella Thorne told LA Times that she has already made $2 million in less than a week from her account. Creators on OnlyFans receive 80 percent of their subscription revenue and tips from fans.

Kobe Bryant: Helicopter company sues air traffic controllers

Kobe Bryant: Helicopter company sues air traffic controllers

Island Express Helicopters, the company operating the chopper that killed Kobe Bryant has filed a suit against the air traffic controllers that were on duty.

Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others crashed in Calabasas in January.

ABC7 reports that lawyers for the firm claim that the pilot, Ara Zobayan, contacted Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) and requested “flight following,” or radar assistance.

They said the controller dismissed the request and replied: “I’m going to lose radar and comms probably pretty shortly.”

The suit called the denial improper “because radar contact had not been lost and services were being denied based on the possibility that they might be lost at some point in the future.”

It said that when the traffic controller who spoke to Zobayan was replaced, he failed to inform his colleague of the communication.

He also allegedly did not terminate radar services with the helicopter, leading the pilot to believe that he was still being monitored.

Attorneys representing Kobe’s wife, Vanessa, had in February sued Island Express Helicopters and Island Express Holding Corp.

BREAKING: President Buhari Proposes 12-Month Limit On Criminal Cases

BREAKING: President Buhari Proposes 12-Month Limit On Criminal Cases

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, decried what he described as the “terribly slow pace” of justice administration in the Nigerian courts.

Buhari, who recalled how it took so long for the courts to decide and eventually dismiss the election petitions he filed to challenge his losses in the 2003, 2007, and 2011 presidential polls, declared that the Nigerian justice system needed an urgent reform.

He suggested that the judiciary should put a 12-month time limit on the hearing of criminal cases from the high court to the Supreme Court, while all civil cases should be concluded within 15 months.

Buhari spoke at the 60th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, with the theme, “Stepping Forward.”

His speech was read at the virtual conference by the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN).

Speaking about his experience, Buhari said, “At the end, I lost all three cases. I wondered then, why it needed to take so long to arrive at a verdict and if I had won the case, someone who did not legitimately win the election would have been in office all that time.

“In 2019, I was no longer petitioner; I had now become a respondent in the case of Atiku and Buhari and the whole process took barely six months; just over six months. What was the difference? The law had changed since my own in 2003, 2007 and 2011. You had now introduced time limits for election petitions. Everything must be done within a six to eight-month period. My question then is why can’t we have a time limit for criminal cases? Why can’t we have a rule that will say a criminal trial all the way to the Supreme Court must not exceed 12 months? And why can’t we do the same for civil cases? Even if we say that civil cases must not go beyond between 12 and 15 months. I think that for me is stepping forward.”

The president equally lamented the churning out of multiple and conflicting court orders by judges, noting that in the recent leadership crisis that rocked the ruling All Progressives Congress, no fewer than eight conflicting court orders were made by different judges in a space of six weeks.

Buhari also proposed a reform of the process of judges’ appointment, recommending that aspiring judges should take tests.

Both Past And Present Barcelona Players Back Messi, Want Him To Leave Club

Both Past And Present Barcelona Players Back Messi, Want Him To Leave Club

Barcelona players past and present have publicly backed Lionel Messi’s decision to leave the club.

Messi, arguably the greatest player in the sport’s history, formally informed the Spanish club on Tuesday afternoon that he wants to activate a clause in his previous contract whereby he can leave the club for free.

His decision has thrown Barcelona into chaos on and off the field after a disastrous trophyless season that saw two managers sacked and the club’s humiliated in the Champions League by Bayern Munich.

Upon the news breaking, former captain and teammate, Carles Puyol tweeted: “Respect and admiration, Leo. All my support, friend.”

Striker Luis Suarez, who was reportedly told by the club’s new head coach, Ronald Koeman, that his contract would be terminated, responded to Puyol’s tweet with two hand-clapping emojis.

Meanwhile, midfielder Arturo Vidal, who has also allegedly been told he has no future at the club, tweeted: ”When you corner a tiger he does not give up, he fights!”

Messi, 33, has spent his entire professional career with Barcelona, scoring over 600 goal, winning ten league titles, four Champions Leagues, and six Ballon d’Ors.

His decision is likely to incite a legal battle between the two parties, with Barcelona insisting the aforementioned clause expired in June, leaving Messi with a €700m release clause.
