Daniel Prude: US Black Man Killed In Police ‘Spit Hood’ Restraint

Daniel Prude: US Black Man Killed In Police 'Spit Hood' Restraint

An unarmed black man died in New York state after he was hooded by police and held face down to the road for two minutes, body camera footage shows.

Daniel Prude, 41, was suffering from mental health issues when police restrained him in March and put a “spit hood” on his head, designed to protect officers from a detainee’s saliva.

He later died of asphyxiation but his story has only now been made public.

His death was two months before the killing of George Floyd.

Mr Floyd died in May after a white policeman knelt on his neck for nearly eight minutes in Minnesota. Global anti-racism protests were held in the wake of his killing.

Tensions have risen again in the US in recent weeks after black man Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back and paralysed during an arrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on 23 August, sparking large protests in the city that have turned violent.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has called for charges against police involved in Mr Blake’s shooting and that of Breonna Taylor, an African-American woman who was killed in her Louisville, Kentucky home during a drug raid in March.

“I think we should let the judicial system work its way,” he told a news conference in Delaware. “I do think at a minimum, they need to be charged, the officers.”

Protesters gathered in the city of Rochester, New York, on Wednesday to condemn Mr Prude’s death. Several people were briefly taken into custody after entering the Public Safety Building, which serves as police headquarters, local media reports say.

US Attorney General William Barr on Wednesday dismissed accusations that black and white Americans were treated differently due to police racism.

In an interview with CNN, he said it was very rare for an unarmed black person to be shot by white officers.

“I think the narrative that the police are in some epidemic of shooting unarmed black men is simply a false narrative,” he said.

How did Daniel Prude die?

Mr Prude’s brother, Joe, called police in Rochester, New York, on 23 March as his sibling was suffering from acute mental health problems.

“I placed a phone call for my brother to get help, not for my brother to get lynched,” he told Wednesday’s news conference.

A warehouse worker from Chicago and father of five, Daniel Prude was visiting his brother at the time of his death.

Police body camera footage obtained by the family through a public records request shows Mr Prude, who had been running naked through the streets in a light snow before police arrived, lying unarmed as officers restrain him on the ground.

The video shows that Mr Prude complied immediately when officers arrived on the scene and ordered him to lie on the ground and put his hands behind his back. He can be heard saying: “Sure thing, sure thing.”

He becomes agitated, at times swearing at the officers who surround him and spitting, but he does not appear to offer any physical resistance, according to the footage.

Mr Prude told officers he was infected with coronavirus, and they placed a “spit hood” over his head. “Spit hoods” are mesh fabric hoods placed over the heads of suspects to prevent spitting or biting.

Critics who oppose their use say they are distressing and humiliating, can cause panic in the detained person, and make it harder to notice if a prisoner is having difficulty breathing.

One officer is seen pressing down with both hands on Mr Prude’s head and saying: “Stop spitting.”

After he stops writhing and goes quiet, one officer notes: “He feels pretty cold.”

Medics try to revive him before he is carried into an ambulance. He was taken off life support a week later on 30 March.

The family’s lawyer said the reason the case was not made public earlier was that it had taken “months” for police footage to be released.

In a statement, New York state’s attorney general called the death a “tragedy” and said an investigation was under way. The officers involved have not been suspended.

According to a post-mortem examination report seen by the Rochester-based Democrat and Chronicle newspaper, Mr Prude’s death was a homicide caused by “complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint”.

The report also listed PCP, a strong hallucinogenic drug, as a complication.

According to the newspaper, Rochester police used pepper spray and pepper balls against protesters on Wednesday outside the Public Safety Building.

Most Dignitaries Reject Invitation To Hanan Buhari’s Wedding

Most Dignitaries Reject Invitation To Hanan Buhari's Wedding

Most dignitaries invited to the wedding of Hanan, one of the daughters of President Muhammadu Buhari, and her husband-to-be, Mohammed Turad, son of an ex-lawmaker from Kaduna State, may not attend the event over fear of COVID-19, Presidency sources have told SaharaReporters.

The marriage is billed to take place on September 4, 2020 and being the first-ever wedding to take place inside Aso Rock Villa, expectations are high.

In preparation for the grand ceremony, First Lady, Aisha Buhari, had sneaked out of Nigeria in August to the United Arab Emirates under the guise of a medical emergency to shop for Hanan’s nuptials, which has
been dubbed ‘The First wedding’.

SaharaReporters gathered that the declination of invitation to the event by top guests might not be unconnected with the online newspaper’s story revealing the COVID-19 status of President Buhari’s closest aide and Senior Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs, Sarki Abba, on Tuesday.

“Abba tested positive for COVID-19 two weeks ago but his current status as we speak is unknown, whether he has tested negative or not.

“All I know is that there’s conspiracy of silence with regards to his status,” a source told SaharaReporters.

Abba, who has since resumed duties after recovering from the virus, is considered still unsafe to mingle with others inside the Presidential Villa by some persons including the First Lady.

It was gathered that Aisha has vowed not to allow Abba attend the wedding ceremony as a result of this situation.

Aisha is also opposed to the idea of Mamman Daura, a nephew and close confidant of Buhari, attending the event but the President has reportedly insisted on having him be a part of the occasion.

It is, however, not known if Daura is in Nigeria at this time or not after being flown in a private jet to the United Kingdom after exhibiting respiratory difficulties with symptoms similar to Coronavirus in August.

“Aisha Buhari is insisting she must not see Sarki Abba and Mamman Daura at the wedding of her daughter. Though Daura is presently out of the country but incase he comes back to Nigeria before the event, the President said he should be allowed to attend.

“Though Abba has recovered, he resumed yesterday after two weeks in isolation. I still don’t know why the First Lady doesn’t want to see him at the event. The press statement by the Presidency denying that Abba never tested positive was planned to douse tension.

“Apart from the First Lady, most of the guests invited are afraid. You know most of the President’s friends are those above 60 years and they are vulnerable to the virus,” a source said.

The current situation, SaharaRepoters reliably gathered has sent panic across top circles of Nigeria’s elites planning to attend the ceremony inside Aso Rock Villa on Friday.

It was further gathered that invitation to the ceremony is being streamlined and as a result the groom’s family have made separate arrangements to host guests on Saturday.

The bride-to-be, Hanan, is a graduate of Photography from Ravensbourne University in England, who in July 2019 ordered the Department of State Services to arrest a young businessman based in Delta State, Athony Okolie, after he was issued a mobile number by telecommunications company MTN previously used and abandoned by her.

Okolie spent 10 weeks in unlawful detention before he was finally released by the secret police.

Earlier in January, Hanan was again in the news after she attended an event to photograph a Durbar by Rilwanu Adamu, Emir of Bauchi, in one of the jets in the presidential fleet.

The move was condemned by Nigerians but the Presidency defended the action by saying that it was a normal procedure.

German Government Says Russian Opposition Leader Was Poisoned With Nerve Agent

German Government Says Russian Opposition Leader Was Poisoned With Nerve Agent

Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny was poisoned with a chemical nerve agent from the Novichok group, the German government said Wednesday.

Navalny, who fell ill on a flight from the Siberian city of Tomsk to Moscow last month, is being treated at a Berlin hospital.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said toxicological tests on samples taken from Navalny had been carried out at a German military laboratory. He said they provided “unequivocal evidence of a chemical nerve agent” from the Novichok group.

In a statement, Seibert said it was “startling” that “Navalny was the victim of an attack with a chemical nerve agent in Russia.”

“The federal government condemns this attack in the strongest possible terms,” the statement said, adding: “The Russian government is urged to explain itself regarding the incident.”
In a press conference Wednesday German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the test results proved that Navalny had been the victim of a crime.

“Alexey Navalny was the victim of an attack with a chemical nerve agent of the Novichok group,” Merkel said. “This poison can be detected without a doubt in the samples. This means that Alexey Navalny is definitely the victim of a crime. They wanted to silence him and I condemn this in the strongest possible terms, also on behalf of the entire Federal Government.”

Merkel added: “There are very serious questions now which only the Russian government can and must answer. The fate of Alexey Navalny has received a lot of attention worldwide. The world will wait for an answer.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that the Kremlin had not received any information from Germany that Navalny was poisoned with a substance from the Novichok group, according to Russian state news agency TASS.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it was waiting for a German response to a request from the Russian Prosecutor General regarding Navalny’s treatment and diagnosis, TASS reported.

Seibert said German Chancellor Angela Merkel had discussed Navalny’s case with ministers earlier Wednesday, and that the government would inform the EU, NATO and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons about the results of the investigation.

The German government statement concluded: “We hope for a full recovery of Alexey Navalny.”

Prominent Kremlin critic

Navalny, 44, a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, became ill en route from Siberia to Moscow on August 20.
Dramatic video footage from the plane showed a man groaning in apparent agony.

The flight made an emergency landing in Omsk, and Navalny was transferred to a hospital there, before his wife and supporters pleaded for him to be taken to Germany for treatment.
The anti-corruption blogger was flown to Berlin on August 22 and taken to the city’s Charité Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said Wednesday that Navalny remains in a “serious” condition and that doctors treating him were in close contact with the Kremlin critic’s wife.
“Alexey Navalny is still being treated in an intensive care unit and mechanically ventilated. A longer course of the illness is to be expected,” the statement read. “Long-term consequences of severe poisoning cannot be ruled out.”

The statement added that the critic’s condition was improving and that his symptoms from being poisoned were declining.

Facebook updates terms of service

Facebook updates terms of service

Facebook has updated its Terms of Service to enable the removal of contents or restrict user access to avoid lawsuits or regulatory impacts.

In an announcement on Wednesday, Facebook said the update would come into effect on October 1.

Some users of Facebook’s app have received notifications regarding the change.

“Effective October 1, 2020, section 3.2 of our Terms of Service will be updated to include: ‘We also can remove or restrict access to your content, services or information if we determine that doing so is reasonably necessary to avoid or mitigate adverse legal or regulatory impacts to Facebook’,” the notification read.

This is coming amidst accusations that Facebook is not doing enough to combat hate speech, an issue that prompted an ad boycott in July.

In a press statement on Monday, it said, “Australia is drafting a new regulation that misunderstands the dynamics of the internet and will do damage to the very news organisations the government is trying to protect. Assuming this draft code becomes law, we will reluctantly stop allowing publishers and people in Australia from sharing local and international news on Facebook and Instagram. This is not our first choice – it is our last. But it is the only way to protect against an outcome that defies logic and will hurt, not help, the long-term vibrancy of Australia’s news and media sector.

“We share the Australian Government’s goal of supporting struggling news organisations, particularly local newspapers, and have engaged extensively with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission that has led the effort. But its solution is counterproductive to that goal. The proposed law is unprecedented in its reach and seeks to regulate every aspect of how tech companies do business with news publishers. Most perplexing, it would force Facebook to pay news organisations for content that the publishers voluntarily place on our platforms and at a price that ignores the financial value we bring publishers.

“The ACCC presumes that Facebook benefits most in its relationship with publishers, when in fact the reverse is true. News represents a fraction of what people see in their News Feed and is not a significant source of revenue for us. Still, we recognize that news provides a vitally important role in society and democracy, which is why we offer free tools and training to help media companies reach an audience many times larger than they have previously.

“News organisations in Australia and elsewhere choose to post news on Facebook for this precise reason, and they encourage readers to share news across social platforms to increase readership of their stories. This in turn allows them to sell more subscriptions and advertising. Over the first five months of 2020 we sent 2.3 billion clicks from Facebook’s News Feedback to Australian news websites at no charge – additional traffic worth an estimated $200 million AUD to Australian publishers.”

Allow me heal all COVID-19 Patients – T.B Joshua tells government

Allow me heal all COVID-19 Patients – T.B Joshua tells government
TB Joshua

Prophet T.B Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, has called on the government to gather COVID-19 patients in their different isolation centres for healing.

Joshua said he wants to reach out to those in isolation centres for interactive prayers, while recounting how he had healed many in different countries.

In a Facebook post, Joshua said, “The blessing of Jesus is for those who knock and ask (Matthew 7:7).

“We want to encourage our communities, states, local and international bodies, medical doctors, scientists and the people in charge to organise those who are in isolation and let us arrange how to connect them to us on Emmanuel TV.

“In whatever way you support to make this happen, we are a team; we are not doing more than you (1 Corinthians 3:8). In any way you need our service in transmission, we are at your service.

“Together we shall pray for them. Together we shall be set free from this COVID-19. The same anointing that heals one is also able to heal all at the same time.

“As the Scripture says, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and after the mass prayer, they were all healed (Luke 4:40).”

The cleric on his Facebook page, shared numerous testimonies of COVID-19 patients who had recovered through his prayers.

COVID-19: North Korea reportedly orders police to shoot citizens who approach Chinese border

COVID-19: North Korea reportedly orders police to shoot citizens who approach Chinese border

North Korea has ordered authorities to shoot anyone who approaches the Chinese border in an extreme attempt to crack down on the spread of COVID-19, according to a report.

The order will be in effect until the pandemic ends to prevent the virus from entering the region known for smuggling goods into the Hermit Kingdom, Radio Free Asia reported.

“Police in the city of Hoeryong issued an emergency notice from the Ministry of Social Security, saying they would kill anyone within a kilometer (0.6 miles) of the North Korea-China border regardless of their reason for being there,” one resident, who declined to be identified for safety reasons, told the outlet.

The draconian country sent extra ammunition to police patrolling the border so they can carry out the new policy.

“They are even saying that no one will be held responsible for shooting deaths that occur within a kilometer of the border area,” the resident told the outlet.

It’s unclear whether the order extends to regions bordering its rival neighbor, South Korea.

North Korea has reported no confirmed cases of COVID-19, a claim widely doubted by outsiders.

Kim Jong Un said in July that the virus “could be said to have entered” the country and issued a lockdown after a man was reported to have symptoms.

State media released photos last week of the despot — who has been rumored to be in a coma for months — holding a meeting to call for prevention efforts against the coronavirus and a typhoon.

“I Challenge Adeboye To Tell The World What He Saw In Aso Rock” – Nnamdi Kanu Dares RCCG GO

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has made claims about Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s refusal to speak with the press after his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday.

It was reported that pastor Adeboye met with President Buhari behind closed-door on Monday.

And after the meeting, the revered Christian leader shunned the eagerly awaiting State House correspondents as he made his way out of the Presidential Villa.

Although details of the meeting have not been made available to the press till this moment, there are indications it was in connection to the controversial Companies and Allied Matters Act, CAMA, which the President signed into law on August 7, 2020.

But Kanu is claiming that what the Pastor saw in Aso Rock his mouth could not speak.

“The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church Of God Pastor E.A Adeboye declined to speak with state house correspondents after his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday,” he wrote on Facebook.

“Common live interview they cannot do. Deception in the name of Christ.

“I challenge Adeboye to tell the world if he met the old brutal dictator Buhari or somebody that looks like him,” he claimed.

Weather Forecaster Dies After Shocking Facebook Video Of Her Confessing Her “Sins”

Weather Forecaster Dies After Shocking Facebook Video Of Her Confessing Her "Sins"

A Texas weather forecaster has died after confessing her “sins” in a devastating, final social media post, according to reports.

Kelly Plasker, a reporter with news station KCBD, shared a “final confession for the sins I am responsible for” on Facebook Sunday in which she alleged a teacher groomed her for a relationship in high school.

“He was supposed to be somebody looking out for me, but instead of looking out for me he looked at me in ways that men should not look at children,” she wrote.

The same day, the news station confirmed the sudden death of Plasker, who had worked there for three years.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic and sudden loss of KCBD weekend morning forecaster Kelly Plasker,” vice president and general manager Dan Jackson said in a statement.

“Kelly was a dedicated member of the KCBD weather staff, well-liked by viewers, and admired by her co-workers. Our deepest sympathies go out to Kelly’s family in this time of great loss.”

Though her cause of death wasn’t released, the network aired a tribute that urged viewers to “ask for help if you’re struggling or had thoughts of suicide,” People reported.

In her final post on Facebook, Plaskar appeared to allude to mental health struggles.

“I love you my friends. My brain is broken and I cannot take it anymore,” she wrote.
