Transfer Deadline: How Man United Signed 4 Players In 24 Hours

Transfer Deadline: How Man United Signed 4 Players In 24 Hours
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Heading into the final days of the transfer window, it seemed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s desires had been catered for.

After only previously signing Donny van de Beek during the summer transfer window, United completed four signings in the 24 hours that followed their 6-1 mauling at home to Tottenham.

United’s third-place finish last season raised hopes of a big leap forward fuelled by a host of star signings, but Ed Woodward, who takes the lead on United’s transfer deals, failed to land Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish and Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele.

Edinson Cavani was the headline signing at Manchester United on Deadline Day as the club also completed deals for Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri, and Amad Diallo.

United on their website announced that they recruited left-back Alex Telles for a fee of £15.4m, brought in 18-year-old Pellistri, and signed Atlanta winger Amad Diallo, in a deal that could be worth up to £37.2m.

United announced the signing of Facundo Pellistri from Club Atletico Penarol on a five-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year.

The 18-year-old has already featured 37 times for the Uruguayan Primera Division club’s first team.

Reacting, Pellistri said, “To join a club with the history of Manchester United is a dream come true. I have learnt a lot at Penarol and I would like to thank them for everything they have done for me. To have the confidence of the manager is an amazing feeling and I know that working with him will be perfect for my development.

“I am coming into a squad full of great players who I will learn from every day. Everyone knows that Manchester United is a club that gives young players an opportunity and I am ready to work hard every day to earn those chances and prove myself in England.”

Amad Diallo: United, Atalanta Reach Agreement

United followed their deals in the transfer market by announcing they had reached an agreement to sign teenage winger Amad Diallo from Serie A side Atalanta, Sky reports

Manchester United described Diallo as “one of the most exciting young prospects in Italian football”.

The 18-year-old Ivorian right-winger has been on the radar of United scouts since 2016, when he was spotted playing at Under-15 level, and the club have been tracking his progress since.

Diallo scored on his Serie A debut in the first of three first-team appearances last season, after rising through the youth ranks at Atalanta.

He will join United in January, subject to medical, personal terms, and a work permit, with the initial fee reported to be £20 million.

Why I Joined Man United – Cavani

Edinson Cavani
Edinson Cavani

33-year-old Cavani has signed a one-year contract with the option of a further 12 months and is expected to wear the club’s iconic number seven shirt.

Cavani has been without a club since leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of June.

The 33-year-old is PSG’s all-time top scorer, scoring 200 goals in seven seasons at the Parc des Princes.

Cavani could even make his debut against his former club as United open their Champions League campaign away to PSG on October 20.

“Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world, so it is a real honour to be here,” said Cavani. “I’ve worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club.”

Cavani will bring experience to a talented young frontline formed by Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.

However, it is at the other end of the field that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are badly in need of fresh blood after conceding 13 goals in their opening three Premier League games.

Cavani won six Ligue 1 titles during his time with PSG and lifted the Copa America in 2011 with Uruguay.

“I have played in front of some of the most passionate supporters in football during my career and I know that it will be the same in Manchester,” added Cavani. “I cannot wait to experience the Old Trafford atmosphere, when it is safe for the fans to return.”

Why We Signed Telles – Man United

Manchester United responded to their defensive woes by signing Brazil left-back Alex Telles from Porto for a reported initial fee of £13.5 million ($14.8 million) on Monday.

Telles agreed a four-year contract, with the option to extend by a further year, just 24 hours after United were thrashed 6-1 by Tottenham.

The 27-year-old is set to replace Luke Shaw at left-back as United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tries to plug the holes in his leaky defence.

Solskjaer said, “First and foremost, I welcome Alex to United. He is a player we have been tracking for some time and his performances over the past few years are exactly what we are looking for.

“He is a fighter and a winner and will add real determination and competition to the squad.

“Alex has the qualities, both as a player and as a person, that we want here at Manchester United.”

AFP reports that Telles, who won league titles among a number of honours at both Porto and Turkish side Galatasaray, is United’s second major signing since the end of last season after the arrival of Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.

EndSARS: Minister To Investigate Allegations Against SARS

EndSARS: Minister To Investigate Allegations Against SARS

The Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Dingyadi, has pledged to ensure a comprehensive investigation into allegations of infractions against personnel of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police.

The Press Secretary to the Minister, Mr Osaigbovo Ehisienmen, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

Dingyadi said the idea was to secure justice for the victims and reprimand erring officers involved in such violation of citizens’ right and unprofessional conducts.

He expressed concern over the incessant report of infractions against personnel of the squad and other Police operational units.

The Minister called on the leadership of the Nigeria Police to strengthen its outfits responsible for monitoring of personnel to ensure professional and improved service delivery.

He said the recent call for scrapping of SARS was a strong feedback mechanism to improve searchlight into SARS activities and reform the unit for better efficiency.

The minister said the incident in Ughelli area of Delta was perpetrated by operatives of a unit different from SARS.

He urged Nigerians to be circumspect in calling for outright disbandment of the squad set up to tackle armed robbery and other violent crimes in Nigeria.

Dingyadi said the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu had announced some measures aimed at curtailing the excesses of SARS personnel.

According to him, the newly inaugurated Servicom Unit of the Ministry of Police Affairs has been mandated to work closely with the Police Public Complaint Unit and relevant department of the Police Service Commission.

He said the idea was to fast-track the resolution of all cases of infractions against police personnel and ensure that erring officers were brought to book to serve as deterrent to others.

Agboola Ajayi: APC, PDP Planning To Import Thugs For Ondo Election

Agboola Ajayi: APC, PDP Planning To Import Thugs For Ondo Election
Ondo Deputy Governor and Zenith Labour Party candidate at the Ondo gubernatorial election, Hon Agboola Ajayi

Agboola Ajayi, the Deputy Governor of Ondo State and candidate of Zenith Labour Party, has called on the Inspector-General of Police and Director-General of the Department of State Services to reorganize the security architecture of the state to curb violence during Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

Ajayi, who made the call in a statement by his media aide, Allen Sowore, on Monday, alleged that candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Eyitayo Jegede, had recruited thugs to unleash attack on members of opposition parties and residents of the state on election day.

The ZLP candidate added that the plan of the two political parties was to bring in armed thugs from neighbouring states like Kogi, Ekiti and Lagos to cause chaos during the election.

The statement reads, “The deputy governor and candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, Agboola Ajayi, has uncovered a clandestine plan by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, and the Peoples Democratic Party to attack innocent citizens of Ondo State before and during October 10 governorship election in the state.

“The callous plan to bring thugs from Lagos through Epe waterway, Ekiti, Kogi and Oyo States is part of an orchestrated plan to unleash terror on perceived opponents during the election in Ondo State.

“The Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress have practically turned Ondo State to a theatre of war as the 2020 governorship election draws nearer through incessant attacks and retaliation, which caused panic and palpable fear in the electorate.

“The deputy governor and candidate of Zenith Labour Party is left with no other option than to call on the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, and Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, and other security agencies to take proactive action with a view to curbing the ugly trend in Ondo State.”

NBA Sets Up Team To Free Abducted Rivers Female Lawyer

NBA Sets Up Team To Free Abducted Rivers Female Lawyer

Some gunmen on Sunday kidnapped a female lawyer, identified as Paulette Ajayi, at Rumuokurusi, in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Ajayi was reportedly trailed to her residence by the hoodlums, who wore military uniform.

They were said to have stopped her before she could enter her compound on Sunday.

A former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, in a tweet, said Ajayi’s mother, a lawyer since 1990, witnessed the abduction of her daughter.

Odinkalu further said the woman pleaded with the gunmen to spare her daughter, but that the assailants punched her on the face, shot into the air and dragged the young lawyer out of the car she had locked herself in before taking her away.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Port Harcourt branch, Prince Nyekwere, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone on Monday.

Nyekwere said the NBA President, Olumide Akpata, had set up a task force within the association to liaise with security agencies to ensure her quick release.

He said, “We have reported the matter to the police and the NBA president has set up a task force of which I am a member, to ensure that she is released,” he stated.

Also, the NBA Publicity Secretary, Dr Rapulu Nduka, said the abduction was done by “at least four men dressed in combat fatigues and dark T-shirts.”

Nduka, in a statement on Monday, titled, ‘NBA sets up task force for the release of Paulette Bisola Ajayi,’ confirmed that a seven-man task force had been set up over the incident.

“The members of the task force are NBA First Vice-President, John Aikpokpo-Martins; NBA Welfare Secretary, Kunle Edun; Port Harcourt NBA Chairman, Prince Nyekwere; Victor Frank-Briggs; Irene Pepple; Anthonia Osademe; and Ngozi Ajayi. The NBA is in contact with the Rivers State Governor, Attorney-General of Rivers, and Rivers State Police Headquarters, on this issue.”

When contacted, a spokesman for the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, but said Bisola’s family had yet to make an official report to the police.

“I can confirm the incident although the family has yet to make any official report to the Divisional Police Officer where the incident took place. But we have heard it and have set machineries in motion to ensure her timely rescue,” he said.

World Teachers’ Day: Abiodun Donates House To Best Teacher In Ogun

World Teachers’ Day: Abiodun Donates House To Best Teacher In Ogun

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, on Monday, announced the donation of a two-bedroom bungalow to Mr Odegbola Ayodele, a Junior Secondary School (JSS) teacher in Abeokuta Grammar School.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the house, located at the state-owned Princes Court, Abeokuta, was given to Ayodele for emerging as the overall best teacher in the state.

Abiodun announced this while addressing executive members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Academic Staff Union Secondary Schools (ASUSS), and the All-Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), in Abeokuta.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting, held at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, was part of activities marking this year’s World Teachers Day.

Aside Ayodele, Mr Adewale Abayomi from Odua Comprehensive High School, Imoru, Ijebu-Ode, who was the best teacher in the senior secondary school category, was given the sum of N2.5 million by the governor.

Abiodun also gave Mrs Mary Adeyemi from St. Paul’s School II, Sagamu, who emerged as the best primary school teacher, the sum of N2 million.

He said that the state government had formally instituted a yearly best teachers’ awards scheme in different categories to appreciate outstanding teachers in the state and those who had distinguished themselves in the course of carrying out their duties.

The governor said to encourage teachers for efficient service delivery, it was imperative to celebrate those who had shown creativity, dedication and hard work in the course of imparting knowledge to younger ones.

“We will continue to celebrate innovation. We will encourage consistency. Our administration will continue to make the welfare of our teachers our priority. Our teachers’ reward will not be in heaven, but here on earth,” he stated.

The governor called on parents to be more involved in caring for their children instead of shifting the responsibility to teachers, as the development process of a child would not be complete without their involvement.

He said that the commemoration of the day remained significant, as it drew attention to the noble role of the teaching profession in nation-building, in line with a standard-setting instrument that addressed the status and situations of teachers around the world.

The governor noted that this year’s Day would identify the challenges being faced by teachers in the practice of their profession, especially at the period of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

He added that the event was to appreciate teachers and also assess their importance as educators of the world so as to improve on their service to humanity.

Abiodun described teachers as partners in building the state, saying that his administration would continue to appreciate them for their individual and collective roles in creating a new learning environment for the children of the state.

“The process for the recruitment of 1,655 graduate-teachers to fill some of the existing vacancies in public secondary schools is at an advanced stage.

“Also approval for career elongation of primary school teachers to Grade Level 15 has been approved, while Principals-General and Headmasters-General from the four geopolitical zones of our dear state have been appointed and sworn into office,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of NUT in the state, Mr Titilope Adebajo, who described teachers as risk-takers and mind moulders, called for the introduction of an education trust fund to enable the government to address many challenges facing the sector.

One of the awardees, Ayodele, told NAN that his emergence as the overall best teacher in the state was due to hard work.

He called on other teachers to be committed and remain steadfast in the discharge of their duties.

Woman Bathes 8 Year-Old Housemaid With Boiling Water For Licking Baby’s Milk

Woman Bathes 8 Year-Old Housemaid With Boiling Water For Licking Baby's Milk

Eight-year-old Chiamaka Oha is battling for her life at the General Hospital, Uga,  Anambra State, after she was allegedly bathed with hot water by her employer, Ogochukwu Anichukwu, for licking her baby’s milk.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, who hails from Ugwueme community in the Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, lived with her employer and the husband at their house at Nanka community, in the Orumba North LGA of Anambra State.

It was alleged that Anichukwu on September 25, 2020, poured hot water on the victim for licking her baby’s milk and shut the door against her to prevent people from seeing the injuries she sustained from the attack.

Our correspondent learnt that a neighbour who visited Anichukwu saw the maid’s condition and reported the matter to a non-governmental organisation, Human Rights Legal Aid Initiative. The NGO was said to have rushed the victim to a medical facility in the area.

PUNCH Metro gathered that another group, Awgu Egbeleli Socio-Cultural Development and Unity Forum, transferred the victim to a general hospital.

A member of the forum, Chidi Okoh, who spoke to our correspondent, said the group learnt about the incident through the social media.

He said, “When we saw a video of the girl on social media, we were moved with compassion, and we sent one of our members, Chief Sunday Nwankwo, who resides in Onitsha, to investigate the incident. When he got there, he was shocked at the inhuman act meted out to the victim by the woman and her husband.

“Chief Nwankwo settled the medical bill at the initial private hospital where the victim was taken to for resuscitation and moved her to the general hospital.

“We learnt that the girl’s offence was that she licked the milk meant for her (Anichukwu’s) baby. She poured hot water on her and locked her inside so that neighbours won’t see her in that state.

“The neighbours confirmed to have seen the girl eating sand on several occasions because of starvation. When we asked the woman why she poured hot water on the victim, she said she was bathing her baby and didn’t know when the hot water poured on her; her husband admitted to beating and inflicting injuries on her.”

The Ekwuloba Zonal Coordinator of Human Rights Legal Aid Initiative, Akaneme Chijioke, who condemned the attack, noted that the victim was in pains when the group rescued her.

He said, “There were sores all over her body. The woman used a hard object to beat her and damaged her fingernails. Her face and mouth are filled with injuries.

“The girl looked frail, hungry, malnourished and traumatised and when we asked the woman what happened, she said she mistakenly poured hot water on her. When we took the child aside to interrogate her, she said the woman was always beating her and that she never licked any milk. She also said she ate sand sometimes to stay alive.  We then went back to the woman to find out why they had not taken the girl to hospital; she said they did not have money.”

Our correspondent learnt that the matter was reported at the Uga Area Command and the couple had been arrested.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, said he was not aware of the matter.

“I Am Very Angry” – VP Osinbajo Blows Hot Over SARS Activities

"I Am Very Angry" - VP Osinbajo Blows Hot Over SARS Activities

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says the reports of harassment of young people by officers of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) of the Nigeria police force makes him “very angry”.

Laolu Akande, media aide to the vice-president, said Osinbajo stated this while speaking with state house correspondents in Abuja on Sunday.

According to Akande, the vice-president said the reports of brutality were “completely unacceptable because these are individuals who are meant to protect Nigerians”.

Osinbajo said President Muhammadu Buhari has also expressed displeasure over the reports of human rights abuses by SARS, and urged Nigerians to expect a reform of the police force.

“The President and I have had discussions on this. He is very concerned about it. He wants to see reform,” Osinbajo was quoted as saying.

“I am very concerned, in fact, very angry about what I see happening to young men and women who are arrested — in some cases maimed or killed by men of the police force.

“The arrest, maiming or killing of young people or anyone at all, is completely wrong. It is unlawful and illegal, and anyone involved in this act ought to be investigated and prosecuted.”

The vice president also said he met with Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, over measures to check SARS operations.

“Today, I had a meeting with the inspector-general of police. We reviewed several of these issues,” he said.

“You are probably aware that the IGP has issued a statement looking at all these issues; in particular, the warning against the use of these tactical units such as SARS for purposes of doing anything other than anti-robbery.

“For example, and I think in his statement, he specifically said that you cannot have a situation where SARS says they are investigating cybercrime by arresting young men and women carrying their laptops and phones. Cybercrime is an electronic crime. I don’t see how you can investigate that by seizing people’s phones in a taxi or in their cars.

“It is very obvious that this is a major concern; a few bad eggs in the police force are causing all of these problems because it is all over the place, in different states. There is a need to take serious action.

“The IG’s statement today is a good first step. He has said clearly that policemen must wear police uniforms. You cannot say that because you belong to a tactical unit, you can dress in your casual clothing and be armed, because people can’t even tell the difference between robbers and the police if you are not properly dressed in police uniform. So, clearly, a reform is in the offing.

“So, I will like to encourage civil society activists, young men and women, who bring this regularly, by the way, to the attention of government and the police. And I think that activism is important because they have been able to bring a lot of these issues to the attention of the police and government, and that is an important part of the process of the reform.”

“Man Shot By SARS Is Not Dead” – Festus Keyamo

"Man Shot By SARS Is Not Dead" - Festus Keyamo

Festus Keyamo, minister of state for labour and employment, says a man allegedly shot by security operatives believed to be of the police’ special anti-robbery squad (SARS) in Delta state is not dead.

There was outrage on Saturday when clips surfaced on Twitter where a witness claimed the young man was gunned down by the operatives who also fled with the victim’s car.

But reacting in a series of tweets on Sunday, Keyamo said he had spoken with the police authorities in the area and also with a family member of the victim who confirmed he’s alive and receiving treatment.

“I just spoke with both the Commissioner of Police, Delta State & the Area Commander in Ughelli where the unfortunate incident involving a young man & the Police took place yesterday. I also spoke with Ochuko, the victim’s brother. I was born, bred and raised in that same town,” the minister tweeted.

“All of them said the victim is alive & receiving treatment. Whilst I totally condemn the extra-judicial killings by SARS & other Police outfits against defenseless citizens and call for comprehensive reforms and overhaul of the system, some facts of this case are as follows:

“(a) The outfit involved in this case is called Operation Delta Safe and not SARS (b) the victim was not shot as confirmed by his brother, but fell out of the Police vehicle when being taken to the station after arrest. The brother said he was pushed; the Police said he jumped.

“This is a picture of the victim in hospital this morning, showing  injuries from the fall (c) the Police stopped to pick him up after the fall, but an angry mob had already gathered and the Police fled and left the victim (d) A Good Samaritan picked him & took him to hospital.”

The minister called on the youth not to resort to violence or destruction of lives and property because he was handling the matter.

He also asked the police authorities to investigate the matter.

There have been calls and protests to #EndSARS following reports of brutality by the police unit.

Oshiomhole gave N1bn to any state we desired to win, says ex-APC vice-chairman

Oshiomhole gave N1bn to any state we desired to win, says ex-APC vice-chairman

Ahmed Wambai, the immediate past national vice-chairman (north-central) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says Adams Oshiomhole, suspended chairman of the party gave N1 billion to any state they desired to win.

Wambai described Oshiomhole as a leader who wanted the best for the party. But he said some APC governors ganged up to frustrate him out of office.

In an interview with The Sun, Wambai said Oshiomhole as chairman did not collect money from governors to run the party, instead he helped the party generate its own income.

“In the history of political parties, Oshiomhole remains the only chairman that governors did not contribute money to the party purse under him. No governor contributed to the running of the party under Oshiomhole. We did that so that the party could be independent,” he said.

“We never go cap in hand to any ministry for contract or patronages for the survival of the party. Oshiomhole was the only person that gave N20 million and N10 million contributions to all the senators and house of representatives candidates during the election.

“He was the only person that gave some governorship candidates of some states we desired to win like Imo, Kwara, Gombe and Zamfara N1 billion each, Benue, about N700 million. We did all these from the purse of the party. In the history of political parties, no one has done that. Ask me the source of the money, it was through the sale of our nomination forms. We deliberately raised the price of governorship nomination form to N22 million to reduce controversy, conflict and unnecessary competition.

“We wanted to stop some unserious persons from picking the form. We even refunded the money of those that lost the primaries. Oshiomhole has never been dictated to by Mr President, the governors or the Ministers. That is the ideal way a party should run as enshrined in the constitution of the party.”

Wambai said some APC governors are against the suspended chairman because of the 2023 election — as some of them are nursing ambition to run for president.

He said it was because of their ambition that they deceived President Muhammadu Buhari about Oshiomhole.

“On several instances, they had wanted the Oshiomhole-led NWC to be dissolved but Mr President refused. But they used everything at their disposal in their desperation to sack us. We have left the party, let them run it, let them produce the president in 2023,” he said.

He added that there would be problems if these same people come against Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the party, rumoured to be planning to contest for president.

Nigeria Is Choking To Death – Pastor Adeboye Warns Buhari Over Continuous Borrowing

Nigeria Is Choking To Death - Pastor Adeboye Warns Buhari Over Continuous Borrowing

Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), on Sunday, said that Nigeria may choke to death over President Muhammadu Buhari government’s continued borrowing.

He lamented that money meant for development was being pocketed by a few people while the masses suffered hunger and starvation.

According to him, the borrowing trend portends grave danger to the future and development of the country.

The General Overseer of RCCG said this during the church’s Special Thanksgiving Service yesterday.

The revered church leader warned that the country may choke to death under the heavy weight of foreign debts.

“There are people who want this nation to choke to death and we read all about it in the newspapers that money meant for the development of this nation is swallowed up even after seeing that the people are hungry,” he said.

“Some of these countries who claim to be our friends want to hug us because they want us to come and borrow money.

“They want us to borrow so much that we would never be able to repay. They keep on saying come and borrow money, we are your friends.

“The Bible makes it clear that the borrower would be the servant of the lender and some of these people who pretend to be our friends manufacture guns and bullets.

“They rejoice when you have problems so that you can come and buy their guns and bullets and use them to kill your own people,” he said.
