#EndSARS: PDP Seeks National Security Emergency

#EndSARS: PDP Seeks National Security Emergency
Uche Secondus

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus has expressed the party’s disappointment with the response of President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime to the #Endsars protests which turned violent over the last few days.

Secondus who spoke at a media briefing at the PDP National Secretariat, in Abuja, on Thursday, said the situation at hand was not one any reasonable Nigerian irrespective of political or religious affiliation should play politics with.

According to him, for nearly two weeks, Nigerian youths have been demonstrating peacefully calling for an end to police brutality as mirrored by a unit of the Nigeria Police force called the Special Anti-Robbery Squad commonly referred to as SARS.

Secondus further said “They (protesters) have been carrying out this constitutional obligation peacefully across the country without any molestation and registering their grievances appropriately to relevant authorities.

“PDP finds the injection of violence into the peaceful protest as unacceptable as it paved the way for the deployment of the military to murder innocent harmless Nigeria youths

“This was callously done on Tuesday night at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos where some group of armed uniformed soldiers of the Nigeria Army opened fire on protesting youths killing and maiming several of them.

“PDP stands shoulder to shoulder with all the victims of this brutal attitude and condemns in the strongest terms. We also urge the protesting youths to ensure that they continue to be peaceful even in the face of provocations.

“We therefore wish to state unequivocally that the President has an honourable option in the face of the glaring incompetence in governance to declare a national emergency in the nation’s security architecture.

“We also request for the immediate setting up of an independent judicial panel to look into the handling of this peaceful protest especially as it relates to the role of security agencies.”

Jailbreaks: NCoS To Publish Names, Pictures Of Fleeing Inmates

Jailbreaks: NCoS To Publish Names, Pictures Of Fleeing Inmates

The Nigerian Correctional Service has said it will publish the names and pictures of over 1,500 inmates who escaped from the custodial facilities in Benin and Oko, Edo State, and in Okitipupa, Ondo State, on Monday and Thursday, respectively.

The NCoS spokesman, DCC, Austin Njoku, said the service was equally mobilising various security and intelligence resources to recapture the fleeing inmates.

While 1,993 inmates broke out of the two custodial centres in Edo State, 58 reportedly escaped from the Ondo correctional facility.

The inmates who included convicts serving time for various crimes and condemned persons on death row were released by suspected hoodlums who took advantage of the #EndSARS protests.

The Edo State custodial centres had come under attack from the suspected hoodlums who freed the inmates and also looted the armoury of a nearby police station carting away five rifles.

The police said 12 suspects were arrested in connection with the incident while the stolen rifles had been recovered.

A similar attack targeted at the Ikoyi correctional on Thursday failed as security operatives quickly mobilised to the facility and foiled the attempted jailbreak.

Giving an update on the incidents on Friday, Njoku urged Nigerians to provide information on the fugitives who he described as dangerous elements.

He stated, “We are mobilising the people and the press for information because to inject the number of such people into the society is a problem. Imagine over 1,000 criminals injected into society?

“We are mobilising the intelligence agencies, the police and the DSS (Department of State Services). We are publishing their names and pictures very soon.”

Njoku added that he did not have the number of inmates already rearrested.

Meanwhile, 25 inmates who escaped from Oko and Sapele Road Correctional Centre when hoodlums broke into the facilities have voluntarily returned to the centres and surrendered themselves to the authorities.

It brings to 207 the number of prisoners who have been recaptured, returned or secured.

One of the inmates, who gave his name as Alex Ose, 40, a taxi driver, said that he had been awaiting trial since 2014 when he was arrested for armed robbery in Benin, Edo State capital.

Ose, who is from Esan, Edo State and a father of four, said he decided to heed the call of the State Governor Godwin Obaseki and surrender himself because he was innocent of the charges against him and was “supremely” sure that he would be vindicated by the court.

He, however, noted that the escape provided him with a perfect opportunity to be home with his wife and children, adding that he ran in the ensuing melee when the protesters stormed the correctional centre and ordered them to escape.

He said, “I am innocent of the allegations against me. I was framed up. I am appealing to Governor Obaseki to look into my case. I had every opportunity to run away but chose to surrender myself because I am not guilty. The governor should please look seriously into my case. I am innocent.”

A source at the Sapele Road Correctional Centre who would not want his name in print said that one of the escaped prisoners was shot on the leg and caught on Wednesday when he was sighted near the correctional centre but took to his heels when he was ordered to surrender himself to the authorities.

The source disclosed that two out of the 25 inmates who returned were from Oko Medium Correctional Centre along Airport Road, Benin, assuring that they would be returned to Oko when the situation returned to normal.

According to him, the DSS, the police and officials of the NCS will soon commence a massive manhunt for the runaway inmates once Obaseki’s one-week grace for them to return expires.

He said those who escaped from lawful prison custody risked being sentenced for extra seven years if caught while those who willingly surrendered themselves would be shown mercy as promised by the governor.

The NCoS officer said, “We have a way of arresting runaway prisoners. We will swing into action once the protest calms down. The earlier they return on their own, the better for them.

“Those who are rearrested will be retried and sentenced to extra seven years if convicted. So, it is in their own interest to return as the governor has given them an extra one week of grace to return.”

COVID-19: Nigeria Records 48 New Cases, No Death

COVID-19: Nigeria Records 48 New Cases, No Death

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced 48 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

The NCDC, on its verified website on Saturday, noted that COVID-19 related mortalities stands at 1,129 as no new death was recorded in the last 24 hours.

The public health agency said that 95 treated persons were also discharged from various isolation centres across the country.

The NCDC disclosed that the new infections were recorded in five states and the Federal Capital Territory, with Lagos having 18, FCT 13, Kaduna six, Rivers and Ogun five each and Ondo one.

It added that 61,930 cases were confirmed with 57,285 cases discharged and 1,129 deaths recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory as at Saturday.

Meanwhile, NCDC warned Nigerians against complacency in containing the spread of the disease as the pandemic has yet to be defeated even with the low recorded cases recently.

“People are no longer seen wearing mask. People now attend gathering with a few too many guests. People are getting tired of wearing masks and are not keeping physical distance or washing hands.

“We can’t get to zero risk of COVID-19, but we can minimize our risk and ensure we’re not jeopardizing our health or the health of others,” it advised.

Lewandowski Hits Hat-trick For Bayern, Madrid Beats Barcelona At Camp Nou

Lewandowski Hits Hat-trick For Bayern, Madrid Beats Barcelona At Camp Nou
Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski took his Bundesliga tally to 10 goals in five games this season with a hat-trick as Bayern Munich thumped Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 on Saturday.

Lewandowski has scored nine goals in his last three league games and wrapped up his treble within an hour at the Allianz Arena.

Lewandowski sets new Bundesliga goal record as Bayern Munich thrash Eintracht Frankfurt | Goal.com

Defending champions Bayern have scored 22 goals this term — 10 more than league leaders RB Leipzig who stayed top with a 2-1 win over 10-man Hertha Berlin.

Bayern sit one point behind in second place.

In Munich, Leroy Sane marked his return from injury with the fourth goal during a brief cameo, before England Under-17 midfielder Jamal Musiala also came off the bench to net the fifth.

However, Bayern’s victory could come at a price as Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies was in clear distress after going off early with an ankle injury.

Lewandowski underlined his status as one of the world’s best strikers last season by scoring a career-best 55 goals in 47 games, including 34 in the Bundesliga.

The Polish international opened the scoring on 10 minutes when he fired home after a Thomas Mueller pass.

Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp couldn’t do anything to stop Lewandowski’s header from a Joshua Kimmich corner in the 26th minute.

Bayern had a penalty appeal turned down when Douglas Costa’s cross clipped the hand of Frankfurt’s Makoto Hasebe.

Lewandowski wrapped up the victory on the hour mark with a clinical finish from another Costa cross.

After sitting out the last two games, Sane ghosted past a defender and drove a shot into the bottom corner with 18 minutes to play.

Manuel Neuer pulled off a great save to deny Frankfurt striker Bas Dost before Musiala grabbed the final goal as the visitors suffered their first league defeat of the season.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid averted a crisis in the best possible way on Saturday by beating Barcelona 3-1 in the first empty Clasico, landing an early blow in La Liga’s title race.

Barca had the chance to inflict a third consecutive defeat on their rivals and increase the pressure on Zinedine Zidane.

LaLiga Highlights: Barcelona 1-3 Real Madrid (FT)

Instead, Madrid’s win earns them a six-point lead over the Catalans, having played one game more.

Sergio Ramos’ penalty and a late Luka Modric goal finished off Barcelona after Federico Valverde and Ansu Fati had traded early strikes in a frantic game that defied those expecting further evidence of two heavyweights in decline.

Barcelona might feel hard done by, especially as Ramos’ penalty was awarded after a check by VAR and a hugely exaggerated fall by Madrid’s captain after Clement Lenglet tugged his shirt.

But aside from an impressive spell in the first half, when an inspired Lionel Messi threatened to win the game on his own, Madrid were dominant for longer spells and pulled away when it mattered.

This was Ronald Koeman’s first Clasico as Barcelona coach and some of the pressure Zidane would have felt from a loss is now transferred to the Dutchman, who has overseen only three wins from his first six games in charge.

Barcelona face Juventus on Wednesday in the Champions League, without the suspended Gerard Pique.

Every Barca set-back is now seen through the lens of Messi’s future too. The Argentinian, who failed in his attempt to leave last summer, has still to score from open play this season.

Mundo Deportivo had declared the match “The least Clasico of Clasicos” on its front page on Saturday morning.

The coronavirus pandemic meant the biggest football stadium in Europe was silent for the game that La Liga president Javier Tebas had claimed is “still the biggest football match in the world”.

In the previous week, Real Madrid had lost to Shakhtar Donestsk and newly promoted Cadiz, while Barcelona were beaten by Getafe last weekend

Yet a dip in quality does not have to mean a drop in drama and any doubts about the thrill of this fixture were answered in eight minutes, as both teams had scored.

Madrid made the start they dreamed of when Karim Benzema drifted deep into the right channel and was allowed to turn, with the sprinting Valverde going beyond him.

Valverde pierced the gap before lifting a curved shot past Neto and into the far corner.

Madrid celebrated as if their confidence had been reborn, but within three minutes, Barcelona were level.

Messi, from almost left-back, chipped a ball over the top freeing Jordi Alba who fired into the front post where Fati had nipped ahead of Ramos and turned in.

It was fast and open for the rest of the half, with Messi enjoying a golden spell. He glided past Casemiro and then swerved around Ramos, but onto his right foot, the finish stabbed into Thibaut Courtois at the near post.

Benzema should have scored too. Madrid finished the stronger before half-time but Barca were better after. Fati flashed just wide and Philippe Coutinho missed a free header at the back post.

Their momentum was checked by Lenglet’s error, a tug in the box clear enough that Ramos’ shirt was stretched, even if the fall was comically exaggerated. Referee Juan Martinez checked the monitor. Ramos found the corner.

Barca wanted a penalty themselves when Ramos booted a ball into team-mate Raphael Varane’s arm, but this time there was no whistle.

Ramos and Valverde both could have made it three in the final minutes before substitute Modric did,  finishing beautifully after Neto rushed out.

Tinubu To Sanwo-Olu: I Didn’t Go Nowhere, I’m Still Jagaban

Tinubu To Sanwo-Olu: I Didn’t Go Nowhere, I’m Still Jagaban

All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, has lamented the invasion and wanton looting of public and private assets in the state of late.

Tinubu made this known on Saturday when he paid a visit to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the State House in Marina.

Addressing journalists after the meeting with the governor, Tinubu said he did not travel out of the country as reported by some sections of the media.

He told reporters that the purpose of his meeting with Sanwo-Olu was to ask him if he had ordered soldiers to attack #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate on Tuesday.

The former Lagos governor said he asked Sanwo-Olu “if he didn’t order the attack, who ordered the attack? That’s all I needed from him.”

Tinubu has come under fire in the last few days over the Lekki incident as rampaging hoodlums burnt down investments reportedly linked with him including a television station, a newspaper house as well as assets of the Lekki Concession Company, the managers of the toll gate.

Speaking on Saturday, Tinubu stressed the need for a thorough investigation into Tuesday night attack.

He said, “First, we have to segregate the calendar – those who suffered casualty before the protests from the hands of SARS. You have to separate that from those who suffered casualty due to what happened at the toll gate.

“For those who suffered casualty from SARS, the Commission of Inquiry that is already set up will unearth that and will make their recommendations. I trust the calibre and the character of the people there, they are independent. That is one.

“Those who suffered casualty during the gunshots need to answer some questions too. Even though we want to help, we still must extract information that will help the government to prepare in future and understand how and when to react because the governor, in particular, is a youth.

“As a youth himself, he (Sanwo-Olu) quickly went to Abuja with the 5/5. The government immediately put into action, dissolved the SARS and had to work through other recommended actions, the needs they demanded. Within a few days, he reported back to the public. That is responsive enough.

“But where are we getting the looting, the carnage, the burning, the invasion of police stations, stealing of arms, maiming of the innocent? It is a handshake beyond the elbow.”

Asked about his whereabouts in the past few days, Tinubu said, “I didn’t go nowhere; I’m a Lagosian and I still hold the title of Asiwaju of Lagos and I am still a Jagaban.

“Fake news is all over the place. They say Seyi my son was kidnapped and was chased but look at him. I didn’t pay a penny to bring him here.”

Tuesday night attack at the Lekki toll gate has been condemned by both local and international civil rights organisations and personalities.

Lekki Shooting: Arsenal Sympathizes With Nigerian Fans

Lekki Shooting: Arsenal Sympathizes With Nigerian Fans

Arsenal have sympathised with their fans in Nigeria over the crisis that followed the #EndSARS protests in the country.

The club tweeted on Saturday that it had seen “the footage” and could not imagine the pain.

Though the club did not state exactly which footage, hundreds of protesters were shot by soldiers in the country at the Lekki toll gate on Tuesday.

The footage of the soldiers firing live ammunition at the protesters has since gone viral and attracted condemnations globally.

While Amnesty International claimed that 10 persons allegedly died, an eyewitness, DJ Switch, said about 15 protesters died.

The club tweeted, “To our Nigerian fans. We see you. We hear you. We feel you. We have read our replies.

“We have seen the footage. We cannot imagine the pain. Our thoughts are with everyone in Nigeria. Stay strong. Stay safe.”

The tweet, however, attracted commendations from some Nigerians on Twitter.

@PrinxHD replying to @Arsenal said, “We’re currently healing from the October 20th event, this will go a long way to facilitate that. Please win tomorrow.”

@prettycachy added, “Thank you Arsenal for the moral support. The Nigerian government through the army (shot) innocent Nigerians who were singing the national anthem and waving the Flag of Nigeria at Lekki Toll Plaza on 20/10/20. We will never forget. #EndSARS”

Looting: Ekiti State Raises Alarm On Poisonous Food Items

Looting: Ekiti State Raises Alarm On Poisonous Food Items

Ekiti State Government, raised an alarm on Saturday that huge quantities of poisonous items, mistaken for food yet to be distributed as Covid-19 palliatives, were looted in warehouses in Ado-Ekiti on Friday.

Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Akin Omole, said in a statement in Ado Ekiti that raising the alarm became expedient to forestall any harm that could befall anyone who consumed the items.

Also reportedly looted was the office of the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) in Ado Ekiti.

“Information at our disposal revealed that the Federal Government’s silos, the ADP warehouse and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) stores, all in Ado- Ekiti, were attacked by hoodlums under the guise of seeking Covid-19 palliatives.

“We insist that Ekiti state currently has no Covid-19 palliative warehouse as all the palliatives had been distributed.

“Unfortunately, the items carted away were Single Super Phosphate and NPK fertilisers, which they erroneously thought was “Gaari’’, cassava grains.

“The SEMA store too has only emergency supplies for disaster response.

“Some people even made away with pre-fermented corns preserved for planting. All these items are poisonous and not fit for consumption.

“We, therefore, appeal to our people not to consume these items because they can kill,’’ Omole warned.

In a similar statement, Dr Olabode Adetoyi, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, confirmed the looting, warning that most of the items carted away contained chemically-treated seeds meant for planting.

“They are not suitable for consumption,’’ he declared.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the looters actually defied a heavy downpour in Ado-Ekiti on Friday night to storm the warehouses.

Many travelled long distances either in their private vehicles or in taxis or on motorcycles to get to the warehouses to loot.

Soldiers drafted to the warehouses were late as most of them were almost empty before they arrived. They deployed minimal force in their attempt to send the looters away, but in spite of this, some of them sustained injuries.

Some residents are of the opinion that the looters were encouraged by similar incidents earlier reported in Lagos and Osun states, where looted many bags of rice, beans, spaghetti and other consumables stored in government warehouses.

BREAKING!! Lekki Shootings: Top US Officials Storm Aso Rock

AMIDST national crisis over the shooting of unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos on Tuesday, a delegation from the United States government has arrived in Nigeria.

The team was at Aso Rock on Thursday to discuss with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo behind closed doors.

The team, according to the US Mission in Nigeria “discussed ongoing violence, the importance of allowing citizens to peacefully demonstrate, and accountability and justice for victims.”

The team comprises of US Assistant Secretary, Bureau for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour, Bob Destro; US Assistant Secretary, Bureau for Conflict Stabilisation Operations, Denise Natali; the Counselor of the US Department of State, Thomas Ulrich Brechbuhl; and the Charge d’Affairs, US Embassy, Kathleen FitzGibbon.

A statement from the US Mission in Nigeria said the team raised US’ concerns about ongoing violence in Nigeria, human rights, religious freedom, and trafficking in persons and heard from senior Nigerian government officials how they were addressing those issues.

The statement said: “The Counselor expressed the US condemnation of the use of excessive force by military forces who fired on unarmed demonstrators in Lagos.

He expressed condolences to the victims of these shootings and urged the government of Nigeria to abide by its commitment to hold those responsible accountable under the law.”

Another message from the Mission on Friday afternoon disclosed that the team met with a broad spectrum of Federal Government officials, governors, human rights activists and civil society representatives, religious leaders, conflict mitigators, donor partners, and the police.

“Together, we continue our collaboration on our common goals of improving civilian security, promotion of human rights, and enhancing economic opportunities,” the message said.

Responding, Vice President Osinbajo expressed the hope that such cooperation would create better understanding of the issues.

He assured the visiting US officials that the plan of both the federal and state governments to investigate police brutality and prosecute erring police officers, create new state-based security and human rights committees, as well as provide compensation to victims of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units would be a game-changer in ensuring an end to impunity.

A statement issued by the Vice President’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, on Friday, said Osinbajo informed the delegation that at least 13 states in the country, including Lagos, had since established judicial panels “to seek justice and to compensate those whose rights have been breached.” While responding to the concerns of the US government on instances of impunity in the country, the vice president noted that these efforts were part of the Nigerian government’s commitment to implementing extensive police reforms.

He added that the establishment of judicial panels of inquiry nationwide would further ensure that the police and other security agencies ensure the protection of human rights of citizens.

The statement quoted Osinbajo as saying: “The concerns around impunity are some of the concerns that informed the establishment of judicial panels of inquiry across states.

Each state is now required to establish judicial inquiry that will look into cases of impunity, excessive use of force, extrajudicial killings etc, especially by law enforcement agents. “Aside from two representatives of civil society groups, these judicial panels will have youth representatives and a representative from the National Human Rights Commission, among others. Each state is also required to have what is called the Special Security and Human Rights Committee to ensure that law enforcement and security agencies protect the human rights of citizens.”

“Government is paying attention. The point we are making is that protests are a means to an end, but they cannot be the end. We are very optimistic that what we have put in place would eventually yield the best possible results for us.”

Osinbajo also highlighted what he termed false narratives about Nigeria, including the herder-farmer crisis, especially in North Central states and the politics behind the allegations. According to him, the herder-farmer crisis was exacerbated mainly because of land and resources struggle rather than the misinterpreted Christians-versus-Muslim narrative.

Lekki Shooting: 15 people killed, soldiers took their bodies away, Please I never said 78 People were killed — DJ Switch

The artiste said armed soldiers and police officers shot at her and other peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate on Tuesday night.

Nigerian artiste, DJ Switch, who was present when soldiers shot at peaceful protesters in Lekki, Lagos, on Tuesday, has shared her experience.

The artiste said armed soldiers and police officers shot at her and other peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate on Tuesday night.

She said at least 15 people were killed in the shootings and that she and other survivors took the victims’ bodies to the soldiers who took them away.

“Something I think about in hindsights that I wished we hadn’t done was that we carried dead bodies and dropped them at the feet of the soldiers, when I asked their unit commander why they are killing us.

“I wished we didn’t do that because they ended up throwing the bodies into their vans,” she said in a video she posted on social media.

She also displayed spent bullets she recovered from the scene of the shooting.

The attack on the unarmed protesters occurred hours after the Lagos State Government imposed a curfew in Lagos. The protesters continued their sit-in despite the announcement of the curfew which was to start by 9 p.m. in Tuesday.

The shooting started before 9 p.m. with the celebrity live streaming the protest and the shooting until she could not continue.

DJ Switch’s statement appears the clearest explanation yet from a witness about what happened in Lekki. It also seeks to clarify the claims that there was no shooting because bodies of victims could not be found.

The army has denied shooting at the protesters, despite contrary evidence, and Governor Sanwo-Olu has only admitted that two people died from the shooting.

The governor has promised an investigation while President Muhammadu Buhari has kept mum about the Lekki shooting.

The military reports to the president and the governor has said he never authorised the deployment of the soldiers.

Amnesty International has said that at least 12 people were killed on Tuesday at both Alausa and Lekki toll gate.

The Lekki shooting has been condemned by many Nigerians and members of the International Community including the U.S. government.

Watch the video of DJ Switch narrating her experience here

and read the transcript of her speech below

‘‘Yes there were soldiers but the other part that people are not talking about is that SARS, the police also came some 40, 45 minutes after the soldiers left. We were teargassed, it’s like cotonou pepper mixed with acid. People were running,we would run, we would come back.

The only thing we fought with was our flags. We sat on the floor waving our flags and singing the national anthem that was all we had. They turned off the street lights even if there is no power on a good day on that axis, there is always light on a good day, there was no light, the street lights were off, it was pitch black.

A boy jumped on me and was shouting ‘‘cover her, cover her I didn’t even understand why he did that. They shot that boy on my back. I fell and while the soldiers were running around and trying to pick their shells, the soilers were also picking their shells, these are some of the shells we picked.

The military were there on Nigerian soil, killing Nigerian citizens, the SARS came aiming and shooting live bullets at us. Who takes live bullets to a protest? The leaders I urge to not insult the intelligence of Nigerians and their families.

Something I think about in hindsights that I wished we hadn’t done was that we carried dead bodies and dropped them at the feet of the soldiers, when I asked their unit commander why they are killing us. I wished we didn’t do that because they ended up throwing the bodies into their vans.

Please i never said 78 died, when i was doing the live seven had died, after my phone died, we had 15, I don’t know if they were more than that but we had a lot of people with stray bullet wounds. I condemn the burning of buses,I’m definitely going to come back and be on the streets protesting peacefully. We must continue. If we stop, I fear it must be 60 years before we can. We need accountability that is at the heart of this matter. We must speak, do not give up.

Sanwo-Olu: Enough! Stop Inciting People On Social Media

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has lamented the wanton destruction of private and public assets as hoodlums under the guise of the #EndSARS protests looted and razed important government infrastructure and business premises in the state.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has lamented the wanton destruction of private and public assets as hoodlums under the guise of the #EndSARS protests looted and razed important government infrastructure and business premises in the state.

Sanwo-Olu, who led some members of his cabinets to the vandalised sites across the state, said he won’t allow further destruction in the state.

He also warned those instigating people on social media to desist from such act while preaching peace and assuring residents that the government was on top of the situation.

“Moving forward from the destruction, we have to continue the process of healing ourselves. We need to stop some of our citizens still using the social media to instigate or incite the people.

“It will not be under my watch that we will lose the city that has the largest economy in the entire black nation.

“Enough is enough. I have moved round and I saw that our people want peace. On this, we are committed to bringing lasting peace back to the state,” the governor was quoted as saying in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile.

The statement was titled, ‘Sanwo-Olu Preaches Peace As He Inspects Govt, Private Assets Destroyed In Wednesday Coordinated Attacks’.

Akosile said the governor visited 27 locations across the state where government assets and private properties were destroyed and physically assessed the level of the vandalism.

Sanwo-Olu described the arson attack in Lagos as “coordinated wanton destruction”, saying it would take the state many decades to recover from the devastation.

“My heart bled after I went out today for a first-hand assessment of the destruction of assets of the Government and private properties.

“The level of destruction observed indicated that the violence was more than just a peaceful protest and agitations for police reforms. The proportion of the devastation is a lot. This is not the Lagos that was handed over to me on May 29, 2019,” the statement further quoted the governor.

At least three banks, over 10 police stations, local government secretariats, over 80 BRT buses, shopping malls, shops, court, palace, houses, amongst others were torched by the rampaging hoodlums.

Others burnt down include the Lagos State Public Works Corporation in Ojodu, Nigeria Port Authority Building at Marina, Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre at CMS, Vehicle Inspection Service headquarters in Ojodu and Toll Plazas at Lekki and Ikoyi Link Bridge.

The governor had since instructed the Lagos Waste Management Authority to clean up the city.

Furthermore, Sanwo-Olu said a Panel of Inquiry would commence investigation into Tuesday shootings on Monday.

The panel, the governor said, would start its sitting at the Lagos Court Arbitration Centre international in Lekki.

He urged members of the public to send their petitions and evidence on the Lekki incident to the panel investigation.

“The governor also visited Reddington Lekki Hospital where some of the injured protesters were admitted after the shootings. All admitted persons had been discharged,” the statement concluded.
