Nations League: Spain Draws As Ramos Misses Penalty Twice

Nations League: Spain Draws As Ramos Misses Penalty Twice

Sergio Ramos missed two penalties as Spain needed a late equaliser from Gerard Moreno to draw 1-1 with Switzerland in the Nations League on Saturday.

Ramos was making his 177th appearance for Spain to become the most capped European player in history, pulling clear of Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon, who has 176.

But instead of a celebration in Basel, it was a night to forget for the defender, who saw one spot-kick saved by Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer but backed himself to score a second, only to miss again with a dreadful attempted ‘Panenka’.

Spain coach Luis Enrique defended his captain after the game.

“Sergio’s numbers for penalties are out of this world,” he said. “If there had been a third penalty, he would have taken that one as well.”

Ramos had previously scored 25 penalties in a row and his inaccuracy from the spot cost Spain, who will now have to beat Germany in Sevilla on Tuesday to reach the final four.

“We wanted to win here and the team tried until the end,” said Moreno. “It wasn’t to be but it’s still in our hands to get through, even if we have a difficult game.”

Enrique’s side have only scored three times in their last five matches and they struggled again to break through against a well-organised Switzerland, who led through Remo Freuler and also had Nico Elvedi sent off with 11 minutes left.

Spain’s press was beaten too easily for the first goal as Switzerland counter-attacked at speed.

With Ramos out of position, Breel Embolo raced in behind before pulling a cross back to Freuler, who opened up his left foot and skewed the ball brilliantly into the far corner.

Ferran Torres could have equalised on the stroke of half-time but fired over at the back post before Ramos began his frantic half an hour.

First, he brilliantly blocked Freuler’s shot on the line after Unai Simon made a mess of rushing out and then the Spain captain won the first penalty, his header hitting the arm of Sergio Rodriguez, who had turned his back.

But Ramos was unable to convert, his shot well saved by Sommer, who refused to commit too soon and got down quickly to his right.

Twenty minutes later, Alvaro Morata was fouled by Elvedi and Ramos stepped up to make amends, only to compound his earlier error by missing again, this time with an attempted chip that Sommer easily collected.

Spain finally found an equaliser in the 89th minute as Moreno capitalised on a tiring Swiss defence by converting Sergio Reguilon’s cross. But Switzerland held on for a point.

The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 112 new infections of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

The NCDC made this known via its verified website on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria had so far tested 705,809 people since the first confirmed COVID-19 case was reported on Feb. 27 this year.

The health agency said that with the 112 new infections recorded in 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FC T) the total confirmed cases nationwide have jumped to 64,996.

According to the centre, of the 112 new cases FCT and Oyo State had 27 each, followed by Bayelsa and Rivers with nine infections each and Delta with seven infections.

There has been tension in the Imosa Idasho community in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State after land grabbing hoodlums invaded the area and attacked some residents, hacking one of them to death.

Witnesses said residents locked their houses in fear after the hoodlums started shooting sporadically and later attacked four men with cutlasses.

One of the four, whose name could not yet be ascertained, died.

According to SaharaReporters, tension started in the area on October 30, around 10 pm, but it was not clear yet which portions of land in the community were in contention.

It was gathered that when the police operatives from Akodo division arrived at the scene, they found “a lifeless body and three others injured.”

The police report said, “It is a case of suspected murder. On October 30, at about 10.05 pm, a distress call was received from Imosa Idasho town, Ibeju Lekki, of gunshots in the area. A patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer rushed to the scene and met three men with machete cut injuries. One dead body was later found on the ground with machete cut injuries on his body the following morning.

“The place of the incident was combed by patrol men. One Emmanuel Adaumbe, 28 years old, was arrested in connection with the crime after he was identified by one of the victims. But others were at large.”

The incident report added that the corpse had been deposited at Epe General Hospital for an autopsy, while the injured ones were taken to Akodo General Hospital for treatment.

“Efforts are ongoing to arrest the other hoodlums. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for discreet investigation,” the Police said.

#EndSARS: Manuel Ajisebutu Seeks Global Vigil For Protest’s Victims

#EndSARS: Manuel Ajisebutu Seeks Global Vigil For Protest's Victims
Prince Ayo Manuel Ajisebutu

Saddened by the reported shootings of unarmed young protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos by yet to be identified military men on October 20, 2020, U.S.-based Nigerian musician and peace activist, Prince Ayo Manuel Ajisebutu, has invited the global community to join Nigerians all over the world to observe a candlelight vigil in honour of all lives lost as a result of the well intentioned #EndSARS protest.

Prior to the nationwide protest, Prince Ayo Manuel had sued for peace, having sensed a volatile omen, and urged the citizens to embrace love as the only virtue that can save Nigeria from possible genocide.

Things indeed went awry following the peaceful protest that set out to demand an end to police brutality and general reform in governance in Nigeria with the hashtag #EndSARS.

The social commentator moves that the vigil be held in every city around the world at nightfall on Sunday, November 15, 2020, calling on people of goodwill globally to observe a sit-at-home candlelight vigil, if they cannot join gatherings in their community.

“We should come together as a united human race to honour these brave youths that were asking their government to protect and care for them. Unfortunately the same military that was supposed to protect them reportedly took their lives. Let’s come together and stand with their families, for their pain is our pain. When one of us is hurting we all feel it because we are all connected,” says Prince Ayo Manuel.

The goal, according to him, is to get the global community to spiritually lift up Nigeria and its people, and to reassure all that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

“The candlelight vigil for the untimely death of the protesters also symbolizes light of hope for all Nigerians. It signifies a rebirth of Nigeria: a new nation that will allow its youths to grow and prosper, a new nation that seeks equal rights and justice for all, a new nation that is not run on tribal and religious sentiments. Indeed, the united youths of Nigeria have already displayed in all their actions, that a new nation that unites and cares for its citizens is possible. I urge you all to be part of the change,” he says.

Prince Ajisebutu is the Founder and President of MansMark Records, an entertainment outfit in Los Angeles, California. In 1995 he organized several rallies to save the Nigerian human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni 9 from being killed by General Abacha. He later joined forces with some Nigerians in Oakland and San Francisco area to form Free Nigeria Movement.

Their activities received the support of organizations such as Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and Rainforest Action Network. He was also the producer and presenter of Voice of Free Nigeria, a weekly radio show that urged Nigerians to take charge of their destiny. The radio was used to protest the annulment of the election of June 12, unjust imprisonment of oppositions and other atrocities committed by the junta regime of General Sani Abacha. His history of activism and constant call for love, peace and unity date back to the 80s, and are reflected in his songs, like “Save Nigeria” (1991), “Africans Unite”(1991) and soon to be released “Make a Change.”

A social change agent, entrepreneur, and creator of A.Y.ZERO clothing line, his personal mantras: Behave Royally, Love, Don’t Hate and We are Connected serve as blueprint for all his business ventures, music, and creative endeavors. To this, he says: “I consider my work to be an evolving, expanding vision to create a better world, no matter what I am doing.”

ASUU: Strike Will Make Government Prioritise Education

ASUU: Strike Will Make Government Prioritise Education

The Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, says the ongoing nationwide strike by ASUU will encourage the government to review its strategy on commercialising education and starving public universities of funds.

The union, while justifying the prolonged strike, insisted that it was the only avenue to compel the government to respond to the plight of the citizens, calling on Nigerians, especially parents, to bear with the union as no good thing comes without pain.

The AAU chapter of ASUU, which stated this in a statement titled, ‘The Survival of Public Universities in Nigeria and the Desirability of the Ongoing Nationwide Strike,’ said the government should be adequately confronted for its plan to raise the cost of education beyond the reach of the poor majority of Nigerians.

In the statement signed by the union’s chairperson, Dr Monday Igbafen, it tasked all stakeholders in the education sector, particularly the students and parents, on the need to join the patriotic struggle to defend the adequate funding of education in the country, describing the ongoing strike as a veritable motif to bring about quality education to the country.

Igbafen said, “Nigerians should bear with us. ASUU is fighting the people’s battle. Our union is struggling to ensure that the children of the poor, who cannot afford the prohibitive cost paid in private universities or do not have opportunities to study outside Nigeria, get quality education which is now priced beyond their reach.

“This will only happen when the government adequately funds public universities and addresses the rot and decay in them.”

The union also accused some government leaders of gross insensitivity to the sad realities in public universities because their children were not in Nigerian universities.

“This is responsible for the obvious lack of committed interest and concern of the government to the earnest resolution of the issues which led to the ongoing strike,” the statement added.

Bauchi: 18 Farmers Killed, 5 Rescued In Boat Mishap

Tragedy struck in Bauchi State when a canoe transporting 23 farmers in Zango Majiya Village capsized, leading to the death of 18 people.

Although five people were rescued, the driver and one other passenger were said to be unconscious.

Public Relations Officer of the state’s Police Command, Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, who announced their deaths in a statement, said a medical doctor certified the 18 persons dead.

Wakil said five persons including the canoe operator were rescued unconscious while corpses have been recovered and taken to a hospital in Itas for post-mortem examination.

He said, “On November 12, 2020, around 11:00am, one Ali Adamu, village head of Majiya, came to Itas-Gadau Police Station and reported that on the same date, around 10:30am, one Nuhu Kaila of Zango Majiya Village carried about 23 persons in a canoe, from Zango Majiya to the farm.

“On reaching the middle of River Buji, the canoe capsized and as a result, the following persons drowned in the river: Abdulraham Shehu (20), Suwaiba Yusuf (12), Saude Abdulkarim (14), Fatima Maigari (10), Zuwaira Maigari (10), Hari Maigari (nine), Hussaina Maigari (eight), Ummani Abdulkarim (15) and Halima Saminu (15), of Gidan Ganji Village.

Nigerian Army: We Have Not Been Petitioned Over Shootings At Lekki

Nigerian Army: We Have Not Been Petitioned Over Shootings At Lekki

The Nigerian Army has said that they have not received any formal petition over their alleged shooting of unarmed #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Tollgate on October 20 this year.

The counsel for the Nigerian Army, Mr Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), made the assertion on Saturday before the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses ad Other Matters.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Taiwo was called to give evidence on behalf of the Nigerian Army on the events of Oct. 20.

“I must submit today that there is no allegation whatsoever against the Nigerian Army before this panel.

“I urge your lordship to discountenance any proposal that the testimony of the Nigerian Army should not be allowed because of a proposed petition.

“Unfortunately for reasons known to most of us, the Nigerian Army could not give their testimony when they were summoned on the last adjourned date. It is a very respectable organisation.

“The Nigerian Army is here again ready to testify, and they have set up their projector and is ready to discharge the summons.

“I repeat, as at six minutes to 11am today, no petition has been served against the Nigerian Army, if any petition has been served, we will respond,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika(SAN) the counsel representing seven #EndSARS protesters had said that he had been unable to make a formal claim on behalf of his clients before the panel.

Olumide-Fusika said that the panel’s Terms of Reference only covered matters relating to the Nigerian Police and the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and that his complaint is against the Nigerian Army.

He also noted that the panel must be set up by a legal instrument and apart from the tweets from the Lagos State Governor Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu stating that a panel will be established.

“We applied for the copy of the instrument establishing the panel by the governor, but we were refused on the ground that freedom of information Act does not apply to Lagos State.

“We applied here this morning and the secretary said there is no authority that states that it should be granted to us,” Olumide-Fusika said.

He sought the panel’s directive as to whether the Nigerian Army should give evidence during proceedings because according to him, “their presence here today is not mature”.

Meanwhile, the head of the nine-man panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi (Rtd) in a ruling stated that the alleged shootings at Lekki covered the panel’s Terms of Reference.

“The Lekki incident was not covered by the original instrument of the panel and it was amended on Oct. 21 to include the Lekki incident.

“The amended instrument is a public document which should not be shrouded in mystery, I have a copy here with me if Mr Olumide-Fusika pleases,”Okuwobi said.

FG: We’ll Explore Other Options If ASUU Remains Adamant

FG: We’ll Explore Other Options If ASUU Remains Adamant

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has expressed optimism that the prolonged strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities will be resolved by next week when the Federal Government team meets the union leaders again.

He, however, said if the matter was not resolved by then, he would explore the provisions in the labour law and other channels.

Government had previously appealed to the union to call off the strike.

The union had on March 24 2020 embarked on an indefinite strike over the failure of the Federal Government to keep to the 2019 Memorandum of Action between them as well as the lingering disagreement over the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System that ASUU rejected.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Friday, the minister said the government had met six of the union’s nine demands and that they would meet again next week with the hope of ending the prolonged strike.

He stated, “Even if countries go to war, at the end of the day they come to the negotiation table. I’m inviting them (ASUU) next week. We are doing side meetings on our part and we are collating everything. I’m collating responses from the Accountant General of the Federation’s Office and everybody who has something to do with this matter.

When asked if it meant that the lecturers may not return to the classrooms in the next one or two weeks, he said, “I’m not looking at that (long) period. I’m an optimist on this matter. By next week, we will conclude this matter. There are so many options left. We have the labour laws and I have options left to me in the labour laws. I have other channels.”

The minister, who said his children had also been at home as a result of the strike, explained that government had agreed to give the University Transparency Academic Solution, the payment platform proposed by ASUU, a trial. He however said the feedback he got from the National Information Technology Development Agency, the agency mandated to follow-up the trial with ASUU, showed they had just concluded the first phase and that the second phase to assess the functional requirement of UTAS had not been done.

He added, “UTAS has yet to be ready but government will not discourage them. And we have told them there is no need using the same old method of strike to make demands since such had been deployed since 2017.”

On the revitalisation fund, he said government had agreed to release N30bn out of the N40bn demanded by the union as the payment for November 2019 and September 2020, adding that the remaining N10bn would be staggered.

“A committee that looked into the Needs Assessment of universities held a workshop on how funds could be generated came up with the recommendation that other things could be done to raise funds, because revitalisation cannot be done through the budget, especially when the country is running a deficit budget,” Ngige added.

US Election: Biden’s Electoral Votes Now 306 After Georgia Win

US Election: Biden’s Electoral Votes Now 306 After Georgia Win

President-elect Joe Biden has won 306 votes in the state-by-state Electoral College that decides who wins the White House, against 232 for Donald Trump, US media projected on Friday.

Biden solidified his victory over Trump in the US election with a victory in traditionally Republican-leaning Georgia, called in his favor by CNN, ABC and other networks.

Trump — who also had 306 Electoral College votes when he beat Hillary Clinton in 2016 — claimed victory in North Carolina, CNN and NBC projected, putting his final tally this time around at 232.

Biden has been the presumptive winner of the election since victory in Pennsylvania took him over the 270-vote threshold on Saturday.

Georgia, one of five states flipped by Biden after going into Trump’s column last time around, hadn’t been won by a Democrat since Bill Clinton in 1992.

Trump took a comfortable early lead in the state as the largely rural vote was counted but it ended up being the closest race in the nation as the cities of Atlanta and Savannah began tabulating results.

Biden is currently up by some 14,000 votes, and a hand recount is expected to be completed next week. Audits of state-wide elections never bring the kind of reversal that Trump would need to change the result.

In traditionally-Republican North Carolina, a drive to get out Black voters by Democrats was not enough to overcome Trump’s hugely loyal base of white, non-college-educated men and rural voters.

Trump, who has refused to acknowledge defeat, was due later Friday to address the public for the first time since becoming the projected loser six days ago.

It was unclear whether he would take questions or finally address his defeat but Trump has repeatedly referred to his 306-vote victory in 2016 as a “landslide” and a “shellacking.”

Suspended EFCC Boss Invited By CCB Over Alleged Assets Fraud

Suspended EFCC Boss Invited By CCB Over Alleged Assets Fraud
Suspended Acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu

The Code of Conduct Bureau has invited suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, for questioning over alleged corruption involving breach of code of conduct for public offers, a report by Peoples Gazette said.

In a November 2, 2020, letter obtained by the publication, Magu was asked to bring copies of all asset declarations since joining public service.

Copies of appointment letters and records of service from January to May 2020 were amongst the documents Magu was asked to bring, as well as all documents of landed properties both developed and undeveloped.

The invitation came months after Magu was suspended from office on allegations of corruption.

He was accused of buying a home in Dubai worth over N570m and being unable to account for the interest accrued to over N500bn recovered by the EFCC but he denied the allegations.

A panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari and headed by Justice Ayo Salami (retired), has failed to prove its case against Magu, instead resorting to different means in a desperate attempt to nail him.
