SpaceX Launches Four Astronauts To The International Space Station

SpaceX Launches Four Astronauts To The International Space Station

Four astronauts were successfully launched on the SpaceX Crew Dragon “Resilience” to the International Space Station on Sunday, the first of what the US hopes will be many routine missions following a successful test flight in late spring.

Three Americans — Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover and Shannon Walker — and Japan’s Soichi Noguchi blasted off at 7:27 pm (0027 GMT Monday) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, thus ending almost a decade of international reliance on Russia for rides on its Soyuz rockets.

“This is a great day for the United States of America, and a great day for Japan,” said NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine during a post-launch press conference.

Twelve minutes after liftoff, at an altitude of 124 miles (200 kilometers) and a speed of 16,800 miles (27,000 kilometers) per hour, the capsule successfully separated from the second stage of the rocket.

“That was one heck of a ride,” said mission commander Hopkins from orbit.

SpaceX Launches Four Astronauts To The International Space StationSpaceX confirmed that it was on the right orbit to reach the ISS a little more than 27 hours later, at around 11:00 pm Monday night (0400 GMT Tuesday), joining two Russians and one American aboard the station, and stay for six months.

There was a problem with the cabin temperature control system, but it was quickly solved.

“She’s operating just fine,” said SpaceX president Glynne Shotwell during the press conference. But “we’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief, 26 or so hours from now, once we hand the crew over to NASA.”

SpaceX briefly transmitted live images from inside the capsule showing the astronauts in their seats, something neither the Russians nor the Americans had done before.

US President-elect Joe Biden hailed the launch on Twitter as a “testament to the power of science and what we can accomplish by harnessing our innovation, ingenuity, and determination,” while President Donald Trump called it “great.”

Vice President Mike Pence, who attended the launch with his wife Karen, called it a “new era in human space exploration in America.”

The Crew Dragon capsule earlier this week became the first spacecraft to be certified by NASA since the Space Shuttle nearly 40 years ago. Its launch vehicle is a reusable SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

At the end of its missions, the Crew Dragon deploys parachutes and then splashes down in water, just as in the Apollo era.

SpaceX Launches Four Astronauts To The International Space StationSpaceX is scheduled to launch two more crewed flights for NASA in 2021, including one in the spring, and four cargo refueling missions over the next 15 months.

NASA turned to SpaceX and Boeing after shuttering the checkered Space Shuttle program in 2011, which failed in its main objectives of making space travel affordable and safe.

The agency will have spent more than $8 billion on the Commercial Crew program by 2024, with the hope that the private sector can take care of NASA’s needs in “low Earth orbit” so it is freed up to focus on return missions to the Moon and then on to Mars.

SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, leapfrogged its much older rival Boeing, whose program floundered after a failed test of its uncrewed Starliner last year.

– Russians unimpressed –
But SpaceX’s success won’t mean the US will stop hitching rides with Russia altogether, said Bridenstine. The goal is to have an “exchange of seats” between American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts.

He also explained it was necessary in case either program was down for a period of time.

The reality, however, is that space ties between the US and Russia — one of the few bright spots in their bilateral relations — have frayed in recent years.

Russia has said it won’t be a partner in the Artemis program to return to the Moon in 2024, claiming the NASA-led mission is too US-centric.

Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Russia’s space agency, has also repeatedly mocked SpaceX’s technology, telling a state news agency he was unimpressed with the Crew Dragon’s “rather rough” water landing and saying his agency was developing a methane rocket that will be reusable 100 times.

But the fact that a national space agency feels moved to compare itself to a company arguably validates NASA’s public-private strategy.

SpaceX’s emergence has also deprived Roscosmos of a valuable income stream.

The cost of round-trips on Russian rockets had been rising and stood at around $85 million per astronaut, according to estimates last year.

– Biden incoming –
Presidential transitions are always a difficult time for NASA, and the ascension of Joe Biden in January is expected to be no different.

The agency has yet to receive from Congress the tens of billions of dollars needed to finalize the Artemis program.

Bridenstine has announced that he will step down, to let the new president set his own goals for space exploration.

So far, Biden has not commented on the 2024 timeline.

Democratic party documents say they support NASA’s Moon and Mars aspirations, but also emphasize elevating the agency’s Earth sciences division to better understand how climate change is affecting our planet.

Peru’s interim President Manuel Merino resigns following the death of two protesters

Peru's interim President Manuel Merino resigns following the death of two protesters

Peru’s interim president, Manuel Merino has resigned less than a week into his new administration after protests calling for his removal left two dead and dozens injured.

In a short televised address on Sunday November 15, Manuel Merino said he’d acted within the law when he was sworn into office as chief of state on Tuesday, despite protesters’ allegations that Congress had staged a parliamentary coup after his predecessor, Martin Vizcarra was removed over bribery allegations, which he denies.

“I want to let the whole country know that I’m resigning,” Merino said, a day after a police crackdown on protesters in Peru left at least two people dead.

“I, like everyone, want what’s best for our country,” he added.

The decision came after a night of unrest in which dozens of protesters took to the streets to protest against Merino following the removal of his predecessor, Martin Vizcarra, who was impeached on Monday, November 9.

During the protest, many were injured from blunt force, tear gas, or projectiles that rights groups say came predominantly from police using excessive force to quell the protests.

The largest march in Lima attracted thousands of people, with police using tear gas fired from helicopters to disperse protesters who were threatening to march towards the Congress building.

Human rights groups reported that 112 people had been hurt and the whereabouts of 41 others were unknown. Health authorities said the dead included Jack Pintado, 22, who was shot 11 times, including in the head, and Jordan Sotelo, 24, who was hit four times in the thorax near his heart.

2021 Budget: FG Rejects Proposal On Revenue Allocation, Review Of Salaries

2021 Budget: FG Rejects Proposal On Revenue Allocation, Review Of Salaries

The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission plans to review the current revenue allocation formula with N830m, while a review of the remuneration packages for political, public and judicial holders will cost N470m.

The Federal Government, however, refused to approve the proposal.

This is made known in a written presentation by the RMAFC to the House of Representatives on its 2020 and 2021 budgets.

The Chairman of RMAFC, Mr Elias Mbam, had on November 4, 2020, appeared before the House Committee on Finance for 2020 budget performance appraisal and defence of 2021 budget proposal, where he decried the high cost of governance in Nigeria.

The RMAFC is proposing for 2021 a budget of N2,223,176,808, consisting personnel cost of N1,654,784,707; overhead cost of N344,762,287; and capital expenditure of N223,629,814.

The capital projects, as approved, include annual nationwide revenue-sharing data verification exercise that would cost N30m; ‘institutionising’ economic diversification at federal and state levels, N40,000,814; and monitoring reconciliation and recovery of revenue exercise, N153,629,000.

Meanwhile, the proposed capital projects, according to Mbam’s presentation, also include a review of revenue allocation formulae at N830m; review of remuneration package for political, public and judicial holders, N470m; and advocacy and sensitisation programme, N235m.

In the presentation, a copy of which our correspondent obtained, the RMAFC said, “The commission has started the process of reviewing the existing revenue allocation formulae. Preliminary works, including literature review, engagement with the major stakeholders and collection of relevant data, have commenced. However, the process has been slowed down due to paucity of funds.

“The review of remuneration package for political, public and judicial office holders has also commenced with literature review and collation of relevant data. However, the exercise is being delayed due to lack of funds.”

On the cost of governance, Mbam said, “The cost of governance in Nigeria is very high and has continued to be on the increase. This is clearly unsustainable as no country can develop with such a high level of recurrent expenditure.

“Some of the reasons responsible for this include duplication of agencies of government with virtually similar functions and responsibilities, corruption, unlimited number of political appointments, wasteful spending; ghost workers’ syndrome, etc.”

The community leader in Ayilamo, Hon Wuam Hilega said the incident occurred at about 5pm on Thursday November 12. He told The Nation that five female students of Tombo Community Secondly School, Ayilamo were sent on errand by their games-master to fetch water from a nearby well, close to the Mobile Police quarters.

However a mobile police inspector, who was with a broom sweeping called one of the girls. Hilega said;

“The girl, Philomena Torhile, was afraid but the police inspector threatened to deal with her if she didn’t respond, so the other girls advised her to go.

“But when Philomena Torhile approached the police inspector, he immediately dragged her into the room, pulled her cloths and raped her.”

The other girls ran back to the school and reported to the principal of Tombo Community Secondary School and other staff, who mobilised to the house of the policeman and broke the door open.

Donald Trump Speaks On Conceding Defeat As He Admits Joe Biden Won The US Election

Donald Trump appeared to finally concede to Joe Biden in a tweet Sunday, but he and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani quickly clarified that he still believes he is the rightful winner and the election was ‘stolen’ by Democrats.

Giuliani told Fox News that President Trump was being ‘sarcastic’ when he finally admitted via Twitter that Biden has won the election more than a week after most major outlets called him the winner.

When Fox’ Maria Bartiromo asked the president’s lawyer Sunday morning if Trump’s tweet was a concession to Biden, Giuliani said, ‘No, far from it.’

What he’s saying is more, I guess, you would call it sarcastic, or a comment on the terrible times in which we live, in which the media has said he won, but by going on to point out that it was illegal,’ Giuliani continued. ‘Obviously, he’s contesting it vigorously in the courts.’

Trump tweeted in reference to his Democratic rival Sunday morning: ‘He won because the Election was Rigged.’

Giuliani clarified in his interview on ‘Sunday Morning Futures’ that because Trump went on to criticize the election and call it illegal was a testament to the fact that the ‘win’ is not legitimate.

‘NO VOTE WATCHERS OR OBSERVERS allowed, vote tabulated by a Radical Left privately owned company, Dominion, with a bad reputation & bum equipment that couldn’t even qualify for Texas (which I won by a lot!), the Fake & Silent Media, & more!’ Trump wrote in his tweet Sunday morning.

He also clarified in a tweet sent an hour later that he is still not ‘conceding’ to Biden, despite what his earlier tweet may have suggested.

‘He only won in the eyes of the FAKE NEWS MEDIA,’ he wrote. ‘I concede NOTHING!’

‘We have a long way to go. This was a RIGGED ELECTION!’ the president added.

Giuliani also said that the election will be overturned, as he asserted to Bartiromo that there is vast evidence that the machines used for counting ballots were rigged for Biden and deleted Trump’s votes.

‘Beyond this election, which I believe will get overturned – but, beyond this election, this whole thing has to be investigated as a national security matter,’ Giuliani told the Fox News host.

Giuliani said certain big cities used ‘corrupt machines’ to count the votes.

‘Now, they didn’t do it everywhere, they did it in big cities, where they have corrupt machines that will protect them, meaning in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, in Detroit,’ Giuliani said. ‘They didn’t have to do it in Chicago and New York or Boston. They could have. They have corrupt machines there.’

‘They did it absolutely in Phoenix, Arizona. They did it absolutely in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Republicans were shut out from enough of the count so they could accomplish what Smartmatic wanted to do,’ he said.

Trump’s tweets Sunday, like many he has sent questioning the results since Election Day, were flagged by Twitter. The warning from Twitter reads: ‘This claim about election fraud is disputed.’

Giuliani is spearheading the legal challenges Trump’s campaign has launched in several states questioning the validity of the election.

Last Saturday, Biden declared himself the victor after projections showed him ahead in enough states with enough Electoral College votes to win the presidency.

Since then, Trump has refused to concede and has just upped his attacks on the election process this year, which included expanding mail-in ballot measures in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

‘The media has tried to call the election,’ Giuliani lamented to Bartiromo – one of Trump’s biggest allies in the press. ‘And they don’t have a legal right to call the election.

‘It gets decided by our electors, not by NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, and even FOX. You don’t get the right to call it. I don’t get the right to call it. So he’s contesting it vigorously,’ he continued.

‘As he’s gotten more evidence of the rigging that went on, he’s really outraged. And I am too. It’s way beyond what people think,’ Giuliani revealed.

Biden’s incoming Chief of Staff Ron Klain told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday that it isn’t up to the president to decide if Biden is the winner or not.

‘If the president´s prepared to begin to recognize that reality, that’s positive,’ Klain said, adding, ‘Donald Trump’s Twitter feed doesn’t make Joe Biden president or not president. The American people did that.’

Trump launched a Twitter tirade Sunday morning that continued his attack on the ‘scam’ election as he claimed there are several factors that contributed to Democrats ‘stealing’ the election for Joe Biden, including allowing the ‘sick joke’ of mass mail-in voting.

The president immediately launched a Twitter tirade Sunday morning that continued his attack on the ‘scam’ election as he claimed there are several factors that contributed to Democrats ‘stealing’ the election for Joe Biden, including allowing the ‘sick joke’ of mass mail-in voting.

‘All of the mechanical ‘glitches’ that took place on Election Night were really THEM getting caught trying to steal votes,’ he said of Democrats. ‘They succeeded plenty, however, without getting caught. Mail-in elections are a sick joke!’

Trump’s campaign has launched several legal challenges in a few different battleground states related to the election and how ballots were tabulated.

Specifically, he has filed lawsuits in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia, among others.

The president also lashed out on Sunday against Georgia, which several major media outlets projected for Biden on Friday as final votes were counted.

Republican Representative Doug Collins of Georgia is spearheading the recount efforts there, which Trump’s campaign launched last week even before canvassing in the state was completed.

Trump, however, said the recount ‘means nothing’ because the fraud and ‘cheating’ was so widespread that a recount is unlikely to change the results.

‘Doing a great job in Georgia,’ Trump lauded Sunday morning before launching his attack. ‘Their recount is a scam, means nothing. Must see fraudulent signatures which is prohibited by stupidly signed & unconstitutional consent decree.’

Friday projections showed Joe Biden winning Georgia by only 0.3 per cent, amounting to just a bit more than 14,000 votes.

Trump on Monday however resumed his tirade with a new post announcing he won the election.

House Of Reps Summon CBN Governor, NNPC MD Over Unremitted $19.25bn, Others

House Of Reps Summon CBN Governor, NNPC MD Over Unremitted $19.25bn, Others

The House of Representatives has summoned the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mele Kyari; and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, over non-remittance of $19.25bn (approximately N3.24tn) revenue that accrued from sales of crude oil in 2014.

Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, Wole Oke, issued the summons based on audit queries issued by the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation for the period.

The committee had penultimate week accused the NNPC GMD of refusing to respond to an audit query issued against the corporation over alleged illegal withdrawals from the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Limited’s Dividends Account, totalling of $20.3bn.

Kyari, who has yet to appear before the lawmakers on the NLNG matter, had denied the allegation elsewhere.

The OAuGF, in its report for 2014, said from the examination of NNPC mandates to the CBN on Domestic Crude Oil Sales and Reconciliation in the Statement of Technical Committee of Federation Account Allocation Committee meeting held in January 2014, it showed that ‘a total sum of N3,234,577,666,791.35 was not remitted to the Federation Account by NNPC within the period under review.”

The query further read, “Cost estimated for crude and product losses was N55,964,682,158.99, which is about 50 per cent of pipeline management cost of N110,402,541,010.88. Names of contractors, location and amount paid to each for the pipeline maintenance were not sighted for audit verification.

“Over 31 per cent – N826,506,271,231.26 – divided by N2,636,390,514,777.18 multiply by 100 per cent – of the realised crude sales for the year were earmarked as other expenses, apart from direct cost of production stated in NNPC reports for the year 2014. The breakdown of other expenses was not provided for audit.

“From the above analysis, it means that the Federation Account is losing 31 per cent (N826,506,271,231.26) being additional estimated cost from the total amount that should have accrue to Federation Account.”

The auditor-general added, “From the total revenue of N3,234,577,666,791.35 as at 14th January, 2015, payable to the Federation Account by NNPC during the year, the corporation deducted the sum of N826,506,271,231.26, i.e. N660,139,048,061.39, N55,964,682,158.99 and N110,402,541,010.88, for subsidy estimate, crude and product losses and pipeline management cost, respectively, at source thereby resulting to net amount withheld figure of N2,408,041,395,560.33 shown in the above table to the Federation Account.

“All these deductions at source by NNPC were not approved by FAAC.”

The OAuGF, therefore, requested the Accountant General of the Federation to inform the NNPC’s GMD to explain the flagrant withholding of domestic crude oil sales revenue by the corporation.

According to the auditor, there has been no positive response on similar issues raised in 2012.

The accountant-general consequently asked the GMD of NNPC to ‘provide names of the contractors, location, amount paid, to each for the pipeline maintenance for verification and the process being used by PPPRA for the repayment of subsidy to the oil marketers should be used for NNPC instead of the latter deducting the subsidy at source.”

The office also declared that deduction at source by NNPC must stop ‘henceforth as this is a contravention of Section 162(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates that ‘all revenue proceeds should be paid to the Federation Account’.

While the committee reviewed the response of the accountant-general, Oke and members of the panel insisted that the NNPC and CBN bosses should cause appearance in persons, as the accountant-general could not provide sufficient evidence on the audit query of such magnitude.

In a related development, Kyari is also expected to respond to other audit queries, including subsidy payments totalling N248.27bn which were not budgeted for in the 2014 Appropriation Act.

Many Feared Dead As Security Operatives Raid Ajah Slum

Many Feared Dead As Security Operatives Raid Ajah Slum

No fewer than five persons are believed to have been killed after the Police, in collaboration with the military, raided a notorious area of Ajah.

The raided area, popularly known as Bollar, is a notorious area opposite Total Filling Station in the General Paint axis of Ajah. The area is said to be home to some hoodlums who raided Police formations in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protest.

They were accused of looting the Police armoury, stealing guns and even picking up uniforms of Police personnel. These stolen guns were said to be used by these hoodlums to perpetuate crimes and threaten residents of the area, even after the end of #EndSARS protest.

In a bid to escape from security operatives combing the area, some of the hoodlums scaled fences into neighbouring estates. A prominent estate in the area with formidable security presence arrested and handed over few of the hoodlums to the security operatives.

As at the time of filing this report, gunshots are still being heard in the area with many structures set ablaze.

According to a source who pleaded anonymity due to the seriousness of the issues surrounding the operation, even before the #EndSARS protest, the settlement believed to be a conglomerate of hoodlums from all parts of the country, is reputed to be a den of every shady activity.
