CNN Receives Fresh Threat Over Investigative Report On Lekki Massacre

CNN Receives Fresh Threat Over Investigative Report On Lekki Massacre

The United Kingdom chapter of the Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group, NDMG, has faulted the investigative report by the Cable News Network, CNN, on the Lekki toll gate shooting.

NDMG threatened a legal action against CNN to curtail the platform’s propaganda in Nigeria if it fails to retract the report.

The group said CNN was desperate to salvage its diminishing image and perceived the End SARS protest in Nigeria as its final shot at redemption.

It insisted that there was no originality in the piece as it followed a pre-existing script aimed at indicting the government and military.

Recall that soldiers were alleged to have shot and killed some End SARS protesters at Lekki toll gate recently.

But, the Nigerian Army denied the report, saying its soldiers acted professionally and did not kill any protester at Lekki toll gate.

Amid the controversy that ensued, CNN had released an investigative report countering the claims of the Nigerian Army.

However, the group’s President, Cosmos Collins advised the American television channel to apologize to Nigeria.

He said: “The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group has taken time to review a purported special report by Cable Network News (CNN) alleging several crimes against the authorities in Nigeria from October 20, 2020, Lekki Toll Gate incident and has come to the inevitable conclusion that the international news network owes Nigeria and its citizens apology.

“Our review confirmed that there was no originality in the report, which is nothing but a stringing together of information that was already available in the public domain in a manner that was aimed at indicting the government and Nigeria’s military forces.

“Understandably, CNN is now under pressure to salvage its image as a credible news source, but it is something it could have tried doing without attempting to further undermine Nigeria.

“We demand that CNN immediately discontinue its demarketing campaign against Nigeria, retract its lies and apologize to our dear country and compatriots failing which we will exploit available legal means to curtail the excesses of this propaganda behemoth.”

Proceedings Grounded As SARS Officers Set To Appear Before Lagos Panel Disappear

Proceedings Grounded As SARS Officers Set To Appear Before Lagos Panel Disappear

Officers of the disbanded Federal Special Armed Robbery Squad are feared to have disappeared, avoiding the inquiry set up by the Lagos government to probe their activities.

Proceedings were adjourned today when lawyers for the Nigeria Police said they could not find the officers, whose activities are under scrutiny

The lawyer then told the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters to step down two cases.

The cases arose from the petitions of Mr Ndukwe Ekekwe vs SARS and Mr Olajide Fowotade vs FSARS.

Ekekwe, a 34-year-old trader petitioned that he became paralysed when he was pushed from a two-storey building by men of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The police counsel, Mr Emmanuel Eze who had been cross-examining Ekekwe had asked for an adjournment because the legal team of the police were unable to get in touch with the officers of the disbanded SARS.

Ekekwe provided the photograph and phone number of Haruna Hamza, the SARS officer who was a member of the team that allegedly pushed him from the building.

“We will apply for a very short adjournment. The reasons are because of the disbandment of SARS and other tactical teams, we have difficulty getting in touch with them.

“We are in the process of getting there and the phone number of the that the petitioner provided here did not go through.

“I apply that the panel tries the number, it did not go through, in the overall interest of justice we apply for this adjournment,” Eze said.

In the Fowotade matter, the petitioner in his testimony on Oct. 31, told the panel that a policeman called ‘Ayo’ of the Ketu Police Station had brutalised him during a traffic dispute.

The petitioner said he lost his front teeth due to the police brutality.

During Friday’s proceedings, the police legal team said it was unable to contact the police officer.

“The petitioner did not mention the surname of Ayo, we could not trace the name to Zone 2 where he claimed to have reported the incident. We could not make headway.

“We need to get the case file of Ayo and his contact. We are constrained to ask for an adjournment because we are without the Ayo or the case file,” Eze said.

Reacting, Fowotade who appeared distressed, challenged the submission of the police counsel.

“There was the DPO Mr Akpan that took me to the hospital and there is Madam Dolapo Badmus that took me to Kayode Aderanti, the AIG’s office.

“How come you do not know the Ayo, don’t you know the station, don’t you know the DPO. How come you don’t know Ayo, is it not the Nigeria Police Force?

“Madam Dolapo Badmus knows everything, how come you do not know Ayo, is he a ghost?,” Fowotade said.

Chairman of the panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi (Rtd) said that police were not making enough effort defending the allegations, though three police officers were mentioned by the petitioner.

Eze told the panel that the legal team is encountering challenges tracing the officers.

“Akpan the DPO is retired, Mr Aderanti is retired and he did not mention Ayo’s surname.

“Dolapo Badmus has handled so many matters and it will be difficult to get in touch with the retired officers,” the police counsel said.

Justice Okuwobi noted that it will not augur well for the respondents (police) not to contact the police officers mentioned by the petitioners.

The retired judge said that the panel will no longer entertain adjournments made at the instance of the police.

She adjourned both cases to Dec. 1 for hearing

“If You Are Tired Of Our Faces Vote Us Out” – Senate President Fires At Nigerians

"If You Are Tired Of Our Faces Vote Us Out" - Senate President Fires At Nigerians

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has warned that there could be anarchy if the Senate is scrapped as being clamoured by some Nigerians.

Rather, he challenged those who are not comfortable with the senators in the current 9th Senate to vote them out in 2023 if they don’t like their faces.

Lawan stated this on Friday while declaring open, a retreat for top management staff of the National Assembly and National Assembly Service Commission in Abuja.

He described the Senate as a leveler which ensured that all parts of the country are equally represented unlike the House of Representatives where states with higher populations produce the highest number of lawmakers.

The Senate President also faulted the argument of those clamouring for the scrapping of the Senate because of the perceived jumbo pay being earned by the senators.

He said the annual budget of the National Assembly is less than one per cent of the nation’s 2021 budget.

FG Announces Completion Of First Phase Of Third Mainland Bridge Rehabilitation

fg Announces Completion Of First Phase Of Third Mainland Bridge Rehabilitation

The Federal Government on Thursday announced the completion of the first phase rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge and a planned 18 hours total closure of the bridge.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola during an inspection of the bridge said that the fixing of six expansion joints on the Oworonshoki bound carriageway had been completed.

He commended road users for their patience.

Popoola said that debris would be cleared from the section and construction would move to the Island-bound carriageway, warranting a total closure of the bridge for 18 hours.

He said that the 18 hours closure would begin from midnight on Saturday through Sunday to move construction materials to the new portion and return to the partial closure before Monday morning.

He said by midnight of Sunday, the total closure would be removed and the partial closure would return, which gives priority for huge traffic in and out of the Island.

“The diversions will still be at the same previous points.

” Work is to commence on the Island-bound lane of the bridge with the partial closure of Adekunle to Adeniji Adele Phase B.

“The repair work is to commence between 22nd of November, 2020 and 22nd of February, 2021 for a duration of three months.

“Consequently, Adekunle to Adeniji-Adele part of the bridge on the Island-bound lane measuring 3.5 Kilometres will be partially closed throughout the period of repair works and there will be a diversion of traffic,” he said.

He listed the traffic diversion timings and routes which had not changed from the existing schedule given by the traffic regulatory agencies when the construction started in July.

Popoola explained that rehabilitation works on the first section dragged for an additional one month beyond October due to the slowdown caused by the EndSARS protests and increased rainfall.

“On behalf of the Honorable Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), I thank Lagosians and the motoring public for their cooperation during the last four months that the rehabilitation work has started,” he said.

Mr Paulo Prono, the Executive Director, Borini Prono, contractors on the project, promised that the firm would do its best to complete rehabilitation of the second phase of the Third Mainland Bridge ahead of schedule.

Prono said that the steel for the construction was ready and three expansion joints were also ready.

He said they were on the ground for immediate commencement of installation on the Island-bound carriageway.

“We are used to the job and we would do better,” he said.

The FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, represented by Mr Zango Matthew, Deputy Corps Commander Operations, Lagos, appealed for understanding of road users, promising adequate traffic regulations.

“Our men would always be on the ground 24/7 to ensure the free flow of traffic,” he said.

NAN reports that the Third Mainland Bridge is going through repair.

It was partially shut on July 24 for the repair.

The repair was expected to last for six months.

It was divided into two phases of three months on each carriageway, starting with the Oworonsoki-bound carriageway.

The 11.8km bridge is the longest of the three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland.

The bridge starts from Oworonshoki, which is linked to the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island.

Constructed in 1990, the bridge was adjudged as the longest in Africa until 1996 when the Oct. 6 Bridge in Cairo was completed.

100 civilians, policemen, soldiers died during #EndSARS Protest – Nigeria finally gives official figure

100 civilians, policemen, soldiers died during #EndSARS Protest - Nigeria finally gives official figure

The federal government has finally released official figures of Nigerians killed in the violence that occurred after the End SARS protest went awry.

Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, provided the details on Thursday.

He accused CNN of looking the other way even though civilians and security operatives died during the civil disorder.

“In its jaundiced reporting, CNN was blind to the fact that six soldiers and 37 policemen were killed in unprovoked attacks.”

Mohammed said despite arresting hordes of looters during the violence in Lagos, the Army counselled and treated them humanely before handing them over to the police.

He stressed that the same cannot be said of those that killed security personnel in a barbaric manner.

“Six soldiers and 37 policemen were killed all over the country during the crisis. This is in addition to 196 policemen who were injured; 164 police vehicles that were destroyed and 134 police stations that were razed.”

Mohammed lambasted human rights organizations, adding that they became suspect after “ignoring” the murder of law enforcement officers during the crisis.

He announced that the of unrest “left 57 civilians dead, 269 private/corporate facilities burnt/looted/vandalized, 243 government facilities burnt/vandalized and 81 government warehouses looted, and instead continued to dwell on the bodiless and bloodless ‘massacre’ at Lekki Toll Gate.”

Mohammed said they did not see anything wrong in the public and private properties that were burnt or looted.

The minister noted that all they could see in their “biased view” of the whole situation was a “hoax massacre”.

Femi Gbajabiamila Takes Action As His Security Aide Shoots Newspaper Vendor Dead

Femi Gbajabiamila Takes Action As His Security Aide Shoots Newspaper Vendor Dead

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has described the killing of a newspaper vendor in Abuja by one of the security details as horrible, saying he is distraught by the incident.

Gbajabiamila, in a statement he personally signed and issued in the early hours of Friday, said he did not know that someone was killed in the attempt to protect him until he arrived his destination.

The PUNCH had reported how a security aide to the Speaker shot the vendor in the head.

The incident, which occurred at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, around 3 pm on Thursday, had caused panic in the area.

The victim, identified as Ifeanyi Okereke, was subsequently rushed to the National Hospital by his brother and some police officers, where he reportedly died.

It was learnt that the shooting happened when Okereke and other street vendors selling on the Shehu Shagari Way, Three Arms Zone, flocked around the convoy of the Speaker, who was said to be in the habit of giving out money anytime he passed them.

The Speaker’s statement read, “A horrible incident has taken place. This evening as I left the national assembly, I stopped as usual to exchange pleasantries with the newspaper vendors at the corner. Many of them have known me since I first moved to Abuja and it was a friendly exchange.

“Unfortunately, after the convoy set out in continuation of movement, unidentified men obstructed the convoy which got the attention of security men in the convoy who shot into the air to disperse them.

“Some hours later, after getting to our destination, it was brought to my attention that someone was hit by a stray bullet, contrary to an earlier report by men in the convoy that they applied their security discretion to shoot in the air.

“I have caused a report to be made to the local police station and an investigation has commenced.

“In the meantime; the officer who fired the fatal shot has been suspended from the convoy pending the conclusion of the investigation.”

Gbajabiamila further wrote, “My value for human life and my respect for all people – irrespective of social-economic status – is what endeared me to these vendors and these are the reasons why I stop my convoy quite often to connect with them. For one of them to have been shot by my security detail is horrific and I cannot begin to imagine the grief and loss Ifeanyi’s family must feel on this sad day. No family should have to go through this.

“I am personally distraught about this incident and my deepest sympathies go to the victim, his family, and Abuja vendors.”

Thinking About a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S? Here Are 4 Reasons to Hold Off

Thinking About a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S? Here Are 4 Reasons to Hold Off

Gamers, rejoice! The hotly anticipated next-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony are now available, meaning you can enjoy kicking ass and taking names on your TV in luxurious 4K glory.

But if you’re on the fence about upgrading to the Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5 (or you just can’t find one in stock), you might want to stay there. The trio of new devices are indeed powerful, but plenty of factors—including a disappointing lack of next-gen games—means you may be better off waiting til next year, when the dust settles, deals may be on offer, and more games are ready for you to enjoy.

Here are four reasons to hold off on the big upgrade:

You can play some “next-gen” games already

You may think a new generation of consoles would bring a new stable of exclusive games taking advantage of all that newfound processing power. But some of the most anticipated next-gen launch titles, like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and Godfall are also available on previous-gen consoles or PC, meaning you don’t need to upgrade to play them unless you want the absolute best visual experience possible.

Some of the most anticipated truly exclusive titles for each console, like iconic Xbox Series X/S first-person shooter Halo Infinite and PlayStation 5 adventure game Horizon: Forbidden West, won’t be available until the second half of 2021, giving you more than enough time to delay spending your hard-earned cash.

You need a better TV

If you have a 1080p TV or 1440p monitor, you can enjoy improvements like an increase in frame rates (resulting in a smoother gaming experience) or graphical fidelity that make your games look better than they would on a less capable console. But you have to look really hard to noice the benefits—games like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla look better on a console like the Xbox Series X, but not $400 better. And most games available for these new consoles were really made with the last-gen hardware in mind, so they’re not taking full advantage of the newfound processing power.

But if you have a 4K TV, you’ll enjoy the primary benefit of upgrading to a console like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X right away. If that’s the case, you’ll definitely see sharper graphics compared to older consoles. Some games are even capable of running in 4K at up to 120 frames per second, but that’s not going to happen if your TV can’t match that refresh rate, or if it doesn’t support the proper connectivity standards. To experience true 4K gaming at 120 FPS, you’ll need a TV supporting the latest video standard: HDMI version 2.1.

The same goes for audio quality. Features like Dolby Atmos support only work if you have a supported sound system (the PlayStation 5 currently lacks Dolby Vision or Atmos support, and its 3D Audio tech works with headphones that support the proprietary format, like its own Pulse 3D gaming headset).

You’ll need more room for your games

Since next-gen games are so large in file size, you’ll need a place to put them. While you can still buy physical games on discs to stick in your console, both the $299 Xbox Series S and $399 PlayStation 5 “digital edition” eschew the disc drive, leaving users with only the option to download games to their 1TB drives. Titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War can use up nearly 20% of your console’s internal storage, if not more.

That means you’ll fill up those drives awfully quick—especially on the cheaper Xbox Series S, which only has a paltry 512GB of storage. You can buy a proprietary storage expansion card for the Xbox’s expansion slot, but an extra TB will run you over $200, making you wonder if dropping the extra $100 for a Series X in the first place will pay for itself in terms of storage.

Your Internet company might charge you extra

Some internet service providers have data caps that can be easily reached after downloading a few new games, especially considering that some PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X games clock in at nearly 100GB a piece. You can get around this problem by buying versions of the new consoles with physical disc drives and sticking to buying games IRL, but it’s still worth thinking about.

JUST IN: Abuja court orders immediate arrest of Atiku Abubakar

JUST IN: Abuja court orders immediate arrest of Atiku Abubakar

The Upper Area Court, Kubwa, Abuja, on Thursday, ordered the immediate arrest of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, son of Nigeria’s former Vice-President, for disobeying an October 27, 2020 judgment directing him to hand his three sons to their mother, Maryam Sherif, for custody.

Sherif had commenced the children-custody suit after the divorce between her and her former husband, Abubakar, who bears the same first name and surname with his father, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

The judge, Bashir Danmaisule, delivered judgment in favour of Sherif on October 27, 2020.

But her lawyer, Nasir Saidu, returned the court complaining that Abubakar had failed to comply with the judgment.

Saidu had urged the court to issue a judgment-debtor summons for the defendant to appear in court to explain why he did not obey the court’s order and why he should not be jailed for disobeying the court judgment.

Both Abubakar and his lawyer, Abdullahi Hassan, were absent in court on Thursday, although the court bailiff said the defendant was served with the summons through the Nigeria Customs Service, where he works, on November 3, 2020.

Relying on the claim of the bailiff, Saidu urged the court to issue an arrest warrant against the defendant.

He urged the court to order that Abubakar be arrested and kept in jail pending when he obeys the court judgment.

He recalled that the defendant had consistently and flagrantly disobeyed the order of the court to bring the children at every court sitting in the course of the hearing of the case.

The judge, Danmaisule, in acceding to the judgment-creditor’s lawyer, noted that the judgment-debtor (Abubakar) appeared to have refused to appear in the court despite being served with the hearing notice.

Citing Section 26 of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Area Courts (Repeal and Enactment) Act 2010, issued an order “for the immediate arrest of the judgment-debtor”.
